“I’ve never picked the jobs I’ve done in my life,” says Mark Sadler, who spent 20 years working at the London underground. But when he retired, he became a lifeguard.
Three years ago, Sadler was giving blood when he felt chest pain. He says, “The doctor asked: ‘Do you drink?’ Yeah, probably too much. ‘Do you smoke?’ Yes. They could see by my size that I ate too much.” Then Sadler stopped smoking and drinking.
“I’ve always had to earn as much as I can to provide for my family,” Sadler says. At the underground, he looked after the engineering fleet He worked 10-to 12-hour days, and often returned to visit the tunnels at night. “If I got the call at 1, I’d be on the go at1: 15.”
He regards his wife and two daughters as “always the most important thing in my life”, but while he worked, “they were wrapped in clingfilm (保鲜膜)”. He means he could see them, but they were in a separate world. That’s why Sadler made his daughters, by then adults, an offer. “I told them: ‘If you have a child, I will become a full-time grandparent.’” For the past couple of years, he has combined caring for his granddaughter with lifeguarding very well. Being a grandparent, he says, has shown “how much I missed” as a father.
Now he is part of a community. “In my old job, I used to say to everyone: ‘Every day you’re learning.’ I feel that even more now that I’ve got to 60. I’m doing something that I chose. I can balance my job with my wife and family. It is everything I want.”
4. What made Sadler change his lifestyle?
A. A health problem. B. Pursuit of an ideal job.
C. An accident at the underground. D. Financial pressures from his family.

7. How does Sadler feel about his career shift?
A. Regretful. B. Nervous. C. Relieved. D. Satisfied.

Dolphins and parrots are known to address each other by imitating the sounds they hear other members of their species make, but only humans are known to address each other using names they make up. However, this might not be the case. Wild elephants respond to individual names in the same way as humans, according to new research published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.
Intending to find out whether elephants might be using made-up names, too, Michael Pardo, a behavioral ecologist at Colorado State University, and his colleagues first identified 469 calls or “rumbles” made by wild African elephants living in Amboseli National Park and Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves in Kenya. Each of the vocalizations (发声) had a known caller and a known receiver, and an algorithm (算法) was used to predict which of these sounds were potential names and which elephant they were likely to describe.
Next, the researchers played recordings of these “names” to different elephants and found that elephants responded more enthusiastically to their own name than they did to the names of others. When they heard their names, they approached the speaker more quickly and responded more vocally. The findings suggest that elephants have specific vocalizations or names for each other, and that they can recognize these names, even when they occur out of context.
Name-calling was more common when animals were communicating over long distances, the authors found, and also when adults were talking to their babies. The young were less likely than adults to use names, suggesting that the ability to design and use names is a skill that takes years to learn.
Elephants are intelligent creatures that live in complex social groups. They use sound, sight, scent and touch to communicate with each other, and their calls are known to communicate a rich stream of information, including details about age, sex, emotion and behavioral intention.
The ability to design and link a sound with the identity of another animal suggests that elephants have a previously unappreciated depth of cognitive ability—they may be capable of abstract thought.
8 Why are humans mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To bring up the topic.
B. To tell readers the ability of humans.
C. To provide the background information.
D. To prove humans are distinct from some animals.
9. What can be inferred from the elephants’ response to these “names”?
A. Elephants are active and enthusiastic animals.
B. Elephants react differently when being called.
C. Elephants are good at making up their own names.
D. Elephants can recognize others’ calling their names.
10. What does the author suggest in paragraph 4?
A. Young elephants dislike using names.
B. Long distance makes it a must to use name-calling.
C. Elephants’ ability to use names can improve as they grow.
D. People tend to call their children’s names when talking to them.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Research showing elephants may have abstract thought ability.
B. Research showing wild elephants can use and recognize made-up names.
C. Research showing African elephants live in highly complex social groups.
D. Research showing dolphins and parrots imitate species’ sounds to communicate.
With the development of modern technology, drones are being applied to various fields. Drone light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the U. S. East or West Coasts, you’ve probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires—more than you might think.
That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires. And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, or the American national day, nears.
In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t. And since light shows are required to keep the ground below the show clear, there’s no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.
Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough. That’s a nuisance for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise.
But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they’re thought to be more eco-friendly. Apart from starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals and is considered a pollutant. Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially hundreds of shows before they even require maintenance. That’s a huge benefit to the environment—and to the companies paying to put on these performances.
At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they’re cooler. That’s not to say that fireworks aren’t cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with the ability to synchronize(同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.
Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.
12. What are the reasons why some cities give up fireworks?
A. They are too expensive. B. They are not cool any more.
C. They speed up climate change. D. They may pose fire risks.
13. What method does the author use to demonstrate the advantages of drones in paragraph 3?
A. By referring to data from previous studies.
B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By giving a definition.
14. What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Reward. B. Attraction. C. Annoyance. D. Instance.
15. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A. The similarities shared by drones and fireworks.
B. The potential challenges drones will face.
C. The importance of drones in promoting economy.
D. The strong competition from companies in different industries.

You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

8. Why are humans mentioned in paragraph 1?
A 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第一段“Dolphins and parrots are known to address each other by imitating the sounds they hear other members of their species make, but only humans are known to address each other using names they make up. However, this might not be the case. Wild elephants respond to individual names in the same way as humans, according to new research published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.( 海豚和鹦鹉能够通过模仿它们所听到的同类发出的声音来相互交流,但只有人类才会用自己创造的名字来称呼彼此。然而,实际情况或许并非如此。根据发表在《自然生态与进化》杂志上的最新研究,野生大象对个体名字的反应方式与人类相同。)”可知,第一段先指出“海豚和鹦鹉会模仿同类声音交流,但只有人类会用自创的名字称呼彼此”,随后用 However 转折,引出新研究发现“野生大象也会像人类一样对特定名字做出反应”。由此可知,第一段提到了人类是为了引入主题。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Next, the researchers played recordings of these “names” to different elephants and found that elephants responded more enthusiastically to their own name than they did to the names of others. When they heard their names, they approached the speaker more quickly and responded more vocally.( 随后,研究人员播放了这些“名字”的录音给不同的大象听,结果发现大象对它们自己的名字的反应比对其他大象的名字的反应更为热情。当听到自己的名字时,它们会更快地靠近说话者,并且会更响亮地回应。)”可知,从大象对这些“名字”的反应中可以得出它们能够识别他人叫它们的名字。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The young were less likely than adults to use names, suggesting that the ability to design and use names is a skill that takes years to learn.( 幼崽使用名字的可能性低于成年动物,这表明设计和使用名字的能力是一项需要多年学习才能掌握的技能。)”
根据文章大意以及第一段中“However, this might not be the case. Wild elephants respond to individual names in the same way as humans, according to new research published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.( 然而,实际情况或许并非如此。根据发表在《自然生态与进化》杂志上的最新研究,野生大象对个体名字的反应方式与人类相同。)”可知,全文围绕一项新研究展开,核心内容是:研究人员通过识别大象的叫声、播放录音实验,发现野生大象拥有特定的“名字”,能够识别并对自己的名字做出积极回应,且使用名字的能力随年龄增长而提升。由此可知,这篇文章主要讲的是研究表明野生大象能够使用并识别虚构的名字。故选B项。
D 13. C 14. C 15. B

根据第一段中“And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires — more than you might think.(烟花,正如你从它的名字可以猜到的那样,会引起火灾——比你想象的要多)”和第二段中“That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires.(这就是去年加州一些城镇放弃烟花转向无人机的原因。澳大利亚的悉尼以其大规模的烟花表演而闻名,由于野火的风险,正在考虑也这样做)”可知,一些城镇放弃烟花是因为它们会带来火灾风险。故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段内容,尤其是“In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t.(除了降低火灾风险外,无人机灯光秀还为幕后人员提供了一个更安全的替代方案。去年,烟花造成10000多人受伤,因为它们可能会在地面上意外爆炸。无人机则不会)”可知,本段通过对比烟花和无人机灯光秀在安全性方面的差异,来说明无人机灯光秀的优势。由此推知,作者是通过对比的方式来展开第三段的。故选C项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough.(另一方面,如果你站得足够近,烟花可能会震破你的耳膜)”以及后文“for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise(对于一些有动物、小孩或对噪音敏感的人来说)”可知,烟花的噪音对于一些人来说是令人烦恼的。
根据最后一段“Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.(然而,现在就急于得出无人机将在不久的将来完全取代烟花的结论还为时过早)”可知,作者认为现在还不能得出无人机将完全取代烟花的结论,由此推知,接下来作者可能会继续谈论无人机面临的挑战。

Should We Use AI When Doing Homework
Recently there has been a dramatic increase in the use of AI to help with homework. Although AI can bring benefits, I think the disadvantages for students are greater.
To begin with, relying too much on AI can lead to laziness and prevent students from developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Another important factor to consider is the fact that using AI tools for homework might promote dishonesty, as students may present AI-generated content as their own work. A final point to consider is that if one depends too much on AI, they may lack confidence in their own abilities.
To sum up, one cannot deny the fact that constant use of AI for homework has its disadvantages, so when you think about using AI, you should consider these many factors.
Should We Use AI When Doing Homework
Is using AI for homework good or bad? There are certainly many disadvantages, but in my opinion, the advantages are much greater.
The first advantage of using AI for homework is its efficiency. Al can quickly gather the needed information, which allows students to analyze the data rather than spending hours searching online. Another advantage is that students can better understand the learning difficulties with the help of AI. For example, with AI breaking down the steps of a solution, students will find it easier to grasp the problem. Finally, AI can provide instant feedback to language-related homework. A few seconds are needed for AI to identify and correct the grammar mistakes in a long article.
In summary, AI can be a useful tool for homework when used as an aid for learning.

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are!

Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.
