The 18-year-old from Nepal achieved his goal on 9th October 2024 by climbing the 8,027-metre Mount Shishapangma in Tibet. Nima is a Sherpa. Our once lively house became quiet and lonely. I missed and worried about him so much that I started sending him messages on the phone, mainly to say hello or to give him a word of warning. One of my messages said, “So you told me you lost your wallet. If you are always careless, one day you’ll wake up and find yourself lost.” I did get Eric’s messages, but most of them were about money. I was a bit angry. They were not different from the notes he used to leave on the whiteboard when he was at home. “I bought a new pair of shoes. They cost me $90. Please help!” “Money is running short because I’ve bought some books for my research paper. Help me, please!” Recently, however, Eric begins to send me all kinds of articles. Some are funny, some are touching and some make me think. He knows I haven’t got many things to do in my free time. He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times. I read the articles slowly, like a careful student, with mixed feelings as well—my kid, who followed me around not long ago, has now become my teacher! So I write back, “I’ve read all those articles. I’ll take them as a loving son’s hopes towards his mother. He must be thinking that his mother is still young enough to accept new things. That makes me feel proud. We parents can’t learn quickly and change in both body and mind. Thank you, my son.” In this way we share ideas, with a gentle and beautiful language we seldom use. Every time I read those messages, I feel warm. 1.Why did the writer keep sending messages to Eric? A.To ask Eric to return home soon. B.Because Eric needed her advice every day. C.Because she felt lonely and worried about him. D.To tell Eric how quiet the house had become. 2.What did the son often write about in the past according to the underlined sentence? A.The study. B.The hobby. C.The future. D.Money. 3.Why does Eric send his mother all kinds of articles? ① To ask his mother for some more money. ② To give his mother some things to do. ③ To help his mother keep up with the times. ④ To help his mother understand the young better. A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.①③④ 4.How does the writer’s feeling change? A.Proud → angry → worried. B.Proud → worried → angry. C.Angry → worried → proud. D.Worried → angry → proud. 5.Which part of a magazine may the article come from? A.Life. B.Health. C.Sports. He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times.” A。 These days, many students are facing some common problems. Some students feel that their parents don’t allow them to use mobile phones or play computer games. They often argue with their parents about this. Also, some students find it hard to get on with their classmates. They may have fights or misunderstandings, and then they can’t continue their friendship. In my opinion, these problems can be solved. First, you should communicate more with your parents. Tell them your feelings and why you need some free time to relax. Your parents will understand you better. Second, if you have problems with your classmates, try to talk to them calmly. Listen to their opinions and explain yours. Don’t be angry easily. Everyone should learn to respect others. You may want to get love and care from a good friendship. Well, you shouldn’t have to go far to find them. ②Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. You give love and care to your friends and family. Then give them to yourself too. Becky Goddard-Hill, the writer of Create Your Own Confidence, says it means speaking to yourself with kindness. It also means taking really good care of your body and mind. ③Studies show that self-love is good for your schoolwork, health and friendships. Self-love makes you believe in yourself. But when you face challenges, you will be confident. ④Start by being kind instead of being angry. When you make a mistake, don’t get angry with yourself. You can tell yourself, “Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. It’s OK. Why did I make this mistake? I need to find it out and avoid it next time.” Remember that no one is perfect. His father is a famous climber, and his uncles were the first brothers to both climb all of the 8,000ers. But even so, Nima didn’t start climbing seriously until he was 16 years old. He climbed his first 8,000er, Mount Manaslu, in August of 2022. In 2024, Nima climbed Mount Qomolangma, the world’s tallest mountain. Nima chose to leave Mount Shishapangma as his last 8,000er. He had planned to climb it in 2023. But an avalanche (雪崩) killed four people, including his friend and teacher, Tenjen Lama Sherpa. I believe if students follow these suggestions, they can get along with their parents and classmates, and have a happier school life. 1.What does the writer think students should do first when having problems with parents? A.Leave home. B.Argue with them. C.Talk with friends. D.Communicate more. 2.The underlined word “calmly” means ________ in Chinese. It makes you feel that you deserve (值得) good things, such as kind friends and fun experiences. It doesn’t mean you’ll be happy all the time. Becky also suggests writing down your strengths. “Looking at the list often will help bring out the best in you,” says Becky. 1.Which of the following might the writer of the passage agree with? A.Good friends are hard to find. B.We should give ourselves love and care. C.New friends are usually better than old ones.
