Try New Fruit. The Weirder, the Better.
As a kid, I often had nosebleeds. My parents blamed all the fruits I ate that gave me “excessive heat” — especially the lychees, my favorite. It didn’t stop me from wolfing them down ____1____ the dozen, however. After we settled in a suburb of Quebec City, lychees became harder to find, and thus an infrequent treat.
____2____ I’ve grown older, my obsession with exotic fruit has intensified — the weirder, the better. ____3____ natural or genetically modified, beautiful or misshapen, every new fruit expands my understanding of the world and enriches my experience within it. Just when I think I have encountered every natural smell, a fruit named lulo appears at my favorite store. Part pineapple juice and part rhubarb-flavored gummy, it’s a scent so rare that I’d rather believe it was picked from a food scientist’s imagination ____4____ accept that it just happens to grow in some people’s backyards.
There’s a line in a Jack Gilbert poem that has inhabited a corner in my brain since I was a teenager. “What lasted is what the soul ate; the way a child knows the world is by putting it part by part into his mouth.” I think of the line ____5____ I prepare to eat a new fruit. Each tasting is a chance to be reunited with my inner child, to be left wide-eyed as I get to know it, part by part. For me, the experience is no less expansive than seeing the ocean for the first time. You catch yourself ____6____(wonder) what else this world has been hiding and what beauty it’s capable of. ____7____ tasked with naming these fruits appear to be equally under a spell, producing simple yet charming names like ice cream bean and dragon fruit.
Most fruits I try only a couple of times, but there’s one to ____8____ I keep returning: the soursop (刺果番荔枝). At ripeness, it tastes like a wonderful combination of banana, strawberry and papaya. ____9____(wait) just one more day, though, and it starts to brown, emitting a smell that registers more like feet than fruit.
This rapid decaying actually comforts me. An approaching expiration date is only encouragement ____10____(taste) these joys as they come. We, too, will soon wake up and find our bodies softened and bruised. Will we have let our sweetest days go to waste?
【答案】1. by 2. As
3. Whether 4. than
5. when 6. wondering

Should you go for a ride-hailing upgrade, or pay extra for legroom on a long flight? For many, such minor choices cause more anxiety than they deserve. A new financial guideline promises ____21____.
It is called the “0. 01% rule.” If the price of a purchase amounts to 0.01% or less of your net worth, you should stop being distressed and buy it. Someone with assets (资产)worth $500, 000, for instance, can spend $50 without ____22____. The principle was coined by Nick Maggiulli, a writer and investment manager, and outlined in his recent book The Wealth Ladder. Since then, it has migrated into personal-finance podcasts and online forums, where it has attracted admirers and ____23____ alike.
Personal finance is no stranger to numeric rules. The 50/30/20 rule advises households to devote half their budget to needs, 30% to wants, and the rest to savings. The 4% rule offers retirees a supposedly safe annual drawdown (动用资金)from their nest egg. Mr. Maggiulli's contribution is different. It is not a ____24____ plan but a yardstick for moments of hesitation — a quick test to distinguish trivial sums from ____25____ ones.
The idea was sparked by a(n) ____26____ source. A line from Jay-Z asked: “What's 50 grand to a fellow like me?” Mr. Maggiulli calculated that at the time it represented roughly 0. 01% of the rapper's fortune. The figure, he realized, ____27____ even for non-billionaires. It mirrors the assumption that assets will compound at just under 4% a year, or 0.01% a day. ____28____ that share of wealth does not eat away at capital.
Like any rule of thumb, the rule has limits. Apply it too liberally and “____29____ yourself” purchases can accumulate into something rather less trivial. Mr. Maggiulli advises restraint: once or twice a week, not daily. Used sensibly, it can justify ____30____ luxuries without opening the door to extravagance (铺张浪费).
Financial planners see the main value of the rule not for the impecunious — who know all too well what they cannot ____31____ — but for the well-off. Neela Hummel, head of Abacus Wealth Partners, notes that clients with eight-figure investments often waste hours chasing a $200 refund. Wealth rarely erases ____32____; habits formed decades earlier stay.
The ____33____ are obvious. Optimistic valuations of one’s home can push up the benchmark. Successive applications can justify ever-pricier upgrades. And focusing on minor expenses may ____34____ you from larger questions about saving, investing and retirement. The rule is no replacement for sound financial planning.
Even so, its popularity reveals something important. In a world full of money advice, many people do not need another formula for building wealth. What they desire is a way to ____35____ spending it. In this respect, Mr. Maggiulli’s rule offers something rare: a rational excuse for your choice.

When experts ponder the future of automobiles, they tend to focus on driverless cars and flying cars. At this year’s technology show in Las Vegas, Hyundai has introduced a third vision for how vehicles might traverse the world around them — one that does not rely solely on wheels.
Hyundai’s latest concept car, called “Elevate,” is designed to walk as easily as it rolls. With wheels at the end of long robotic legs, the machine would allow “users to drive, walk or even climb over the most dangerous terrain,” according to the company.
The company — which labels the machine a UMV, or “ultimate mobility vehicle” — said the concept was inspired by the need for “resilient transportation” in disaster zones. John Suh, Hyundai vice president, stated: “When a tsunami or earthquake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris (废墟碎片) field. They have to go the rest of the way by foot. Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete.” Suh added the vehicle’s usefulness would not be limited to emergency situations. For people with disabilities without access to an ADA ramp, an autonomous version could walk to a front door and position itself so a wheelchair could “roll right in.”
How realistic is the Elevate concept? David Bailey, a professor at Aston Business School, told the BBC that although concept cars may not make it to the factory floor, they can help generate valuable new ideas. “For most of us, it’s going to be wheels and roads, but in extreme situations there may be scope for this sort of thing,” Bailey said. “There may well be applications in terms of emergency services — but there are very big technological challenges to make this sort of thing.”
Hyundai said the vehicle is designed to use “both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits (步法),” giving it the ability to travel in any direction. The legs fold up into a “stowed drive-mode” to save power. Those legs would be able to climb over a five-foot wall and step across a five-foot gap. When the surface is relatively flat, the vehicle turns to conventional wheels, but when the terrain grows craggy, the legs extend, taking synchronized (同步的) steps forward.
36. What is the primary purpose of Hyundai’s Elevate concept according to the passage?
A. To replace all traditional wheeled vehicles in daily use.
B. To provide a solution for mobility in extreme and challenging environments.
C. To compete directly with driverless and flying car technologies.
D. To primarily serve as a luxury vehicle for adventurous consumers.
37. According to John Suh, what makes Elevate particularly innovative compared to traditional rescue vehicles?
A. Its potential to provide last-mile access where conventional vehicles fail.
B. Its capacity to navigate through completely destroyed terrain without obstacles.
C. Its ability to carry more first responders to disaster sites.
D. Its feature of being fully autonomous without human operators.
38. Which of the following best describes Professor Bailey’s attitude towards the Elevate concept?
A. Confident in its immediate mass production for commercial use.
B. Dismissive of its practical value in saving people in dangerous situations.
C. Optimistic about its potential yet aware of the difficulties.
D. Concerned mainly about its cost-effectiveness for everyday use.
39. What does the description of “mammalian and reptilian walking gaits” primarily suggest about the vehicle’s design?
A. It prioritizes biological accuracy over mechanical efficiency.
B. It focuses on imitating animal movements for aesthetic appeal.
C. It requires animal-like flexibility in difficult terrains.
D. It incorporates diverse mobility patterns for enhanced adaptability.
【答案】36 B 37. A 38. C 39. D

Cornell Note-Taking Method: A Simplified Guide
The Cornell Note-Taking Method, created by Professor Walter Pauk in the 1950s, is a structured way to organize notes and enhance learning. It divides a page into three main sections: a cue column on the left, a note-taking area on the right, and a summary section at the bottom.
How to Use It:
Title Header: Write the topic at the top of the page. Include the date or objective for reference.
Cue Column: Use this narrow left section for key terms, questions, or main ideas. Think of it as a glossary to help you quickly find important points later.
Note-Taking Area: Record detailed notes here during lectures or reading. Focus on important facts and references.
Summary Section: At the bottom, summarize the main ideas in one or two sentences. This reinforces your understanding and makes review easier.
Tips for Effective Use:
Self-Quiz Questions: Write simple questions in the cue column to test yourself later.
Summarize Even if Incomplete: Reflect on key points in your own words, even if your notes aren't perfect.
Color Coding: Use colors to highlight key terms, definitions, and examples. This makes your notes clearer and more engaging.
Next Steps: Add actions you need to take in the summary to keep learning proactive.
Versatile Uses:
Meetings and Interviews: Record key points in the note-taking area, highlight themes in the cue column, and summarize takeaways.
Brainstorming: Jot down ideas in the main section, categorize them in the cue column, and identify top ideas in the summary.
Project Planning: Note goals and milestones in the main area, deadlines in the cue column, and create an action plan in the summary.
The Cornell Note-Taking Method represents a robust and versatile framework for organizing information across diverse learning and professional contexts. By promoting active engagement, critical thinking, and structured review, it enhances the efficiency of knowledge acquisition and retention. Whether employed by students in lecture halls or professionals in meetings, the Cornell Method remains a valuable tool for those seeking to optimize their note-taking practices.
40. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the history of the Cornell Note-Taking Method.
B. To explain how to effectively use the Cornell Note-Taking Method.
C. To compare different note-taking methods for various learning styles.
D. To describe the benefits of using visual aids in note-taking.
41. What is the advantage of adding a "next steps" section in the summary of Cornell notes?
A. It helps to quickly identify the main ideas of the material.
B. It allows for a more organized and visually appealing set of notes.

推理判断题。根据“How to Use It”中康奈尔笔记法的结构“Note-Taking Area: Record detailed notes here during lectures or reading. Focus on important facts and references. (在笔记区记录讲座或阅读中的详细内容,重点关注重要事实和参考信息)”可知,会议中的关键点和任务应记录在笔记区,而提示栏用于分类或主题标注,总结栏用于提炼核心目标,因此,记录会议要点和任务最符合笔记区的功能。故选B项。
The Philosophical Puzzle of Personal Identity (自我同一性)
One of the most enduring questions in Western philosophy — “What makes a person the same individual over time?” — cuts to the core of how we understand ourselves, our relationships, and our sense of continuity. This question defines the debate over personal identity, a concept that has challenged thinkers for millennia, from ancient Greek philosophers to modern analytic theorists.
At its heart, the problem arises from a simple observation: human beings are constantly changing. Our bodies replace cells every few years; our memories fade or shift; our beliefs, values, and even personalities evolve with experience. Yet we intuitively feel that we are the “same person” who celebrated a childhood birthday, made a difficult decision last year, or will plan for retirement decades from now. What, if anything, preserves this sense of unity across change?
A foundational theory comes from John Locke, an 18th century philosopher who rejected the idea that personal identity is tied to the body (a view known as animalism) or the soul (a religious or metaphysical claim). Instead, Locke argued that identity lies in psychological continuity — specifically, the chain of memories that connects our past selves to our present ones. For Locke, if you can consciously recall an experience from your past (e.g., your first day of school), you are the same person who had that experience. This theory aligns with our everyday intuition: when we say “I was a different person back then,” we often mean our memories, preferences, or self-awareness have shifted, not that we are an entirely new individual.
Yet Locke’s view faces compelling objections. Consider the “transplant paradox”: if your memories were copied into two separate bodies, both would claim to be “you” and both would have equal psychological continuity with your past self. But two people cannot be the same individual — so Locke’s theory struggles to explain this scenario. Enter Derek Parfit (德里克·帕菲特), a 20th century philosopher who argued that personal identity is not a “deep, further fact” about us, but rather a matter of degree of psychological connectedness. For Parfit, what matters is not whether we are “exactly the same” over time, but whether there is a strong enough link between our past, present, and future selves (e.g., overlapping memories, consistent desires, or causal connections between our actions and their consequences). In the transplant case, neither copy is “you,” but both bear a relation to you that matters morally and practically — just as your future self, though changed, is still someone you have reason to care about.
This debate has profound real-world implications. It shapes how we think about moral responsibility (Can a person be held accountable for a crime they committed decades ago, if their beliefs and character have completely transformed?), medical ethics (Is a patient with severe dementia still the same person who signed a living will?), and even our own sense of purpose (If our selves are constantly evolving, what gives our lives continuity?).
Ultimately, the puzzle of personal identity may not have a single “correct” answer. What it offers instead is a framework for reflecting on what makes us us — not as fixed, unchanging entities, but as dynamic beings shaped by our memories, relationships, and the choices that connect our past to our future.
43. What does the first two paragraphs tell us about the debate over personal identity?
A. It is closely linked to how humans perceive themselves and their continued existence.
B. It has only become a dominant topic of discussion among modern philosophers.
C. It centers on why people’s memories, beliefs, and personalities will change with time.
D. It arises from disagreements between ancient Greek philosophers and modern theorists.
44. Which of the following statements would John Locke most likely agree with?
A. A person’s personal identity is fundamentally determined by their physical body.
B. If one can’t remember a past experience, he isn’t the same person who had it.
C. The soul is the essential factor that preserves a person’s personal identity.
D. Personal identity remains unchanged even if a person’s beliefs and values evolve.
45. Which scenario best illustrates Derek Parfit’s “overlapping memories” in Paragraph 4?
A A lady still remembers her first day of high school clearly but forgets her recent birthday.
B. Identical twins share the memory of a unique childhood event they both experienced.
C. A man now recalls yesterday’s chat where they laughed about a trip two months ago.
D. A student claims to remember an examination, in strikingly vivid details, he never took.
46. What does the passage mainly want to convey?
A To introduce John Locke’s and Derek Parfit’s theories about personal identity.
B. To explain the reasons why the puzzle of personal identity has existed for millennia.
C. To show the real-world implications of the considerable debate on personal identity.
D. To present the philosophical puzzle of personal identity and its value for reflection.
【答案】43. A 44. B 45. C 46. D
根据第一段“One of the most enduring questions in Western philosophy — “What makes a person the same individual over time?” — cuts to the core of how we understand ourselves, our relationships, and our sense of continuity. This question defines the debate over personal identity, a concept that has challenged thinkers for millennia, from ancient Greek philosophers to modern analytic theorists. (西方哲学中最经久不衰的问题之一——“是什么使一个人随着时间的推移而保持不变?”——直击我们如何理解自己、我们的关系和我们的连续性的核心。这个问题定义了关于个人同一性的争论,这个概念已经挑战了几千年来的思想家,从古希腊哲学家到现代分析理论家。)”以及第二段“At its heart, the problem arises from a simple observation: human beings are constantly changing. 故选A项。
【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“For Locke, if you can consciously recall an experience from your past (e.g., your first day of school), you are the same person who had that experience. This theory aligns with our everyday intuition: when we say “I was a different person back then,” we often mean our memories, preferences, or self-awareness have shifted, not that we are an entirely new individual.
根据第四段中“For Parfit, what matters is not whether we are “exactly the same” over time, but whether there is a strong enough link between our past, present, and future selves (e.g., overlapping memories, consistent desires, or causal connections between our actions and their consequences). In the transplant case, neither copy is “you,” but both bear a relation to you that matters morally and practically — just as your future self, though changed, is still someone you have reason to care about.

Ⅲ. Summary Writing(10分)
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage. Use your own words as far as possible.
The Rise of Gig Economy
The rise of the gig economy — short-term, freelance (自由职业), or contract work — has transformed traditional employment. A survey reveals that 60% of freelancers report greater job satisfaction than full-time office workers, but research also suggests this shift has mixed effects on worker satisfaction.
Autonomy and flexibility stand as the clearest advantage. Workers can set their own schedules, choose projects that interest them, and even work from anywhere. Many find this freedom liberating compared to traditional 9-to-5 jobs.
Gig work enables skill diversification — workers can take on varied projects across industries, expanding their expertise beyond a single job role. This exposure often leads to faster career growth and higher earning potential in the long term.
Yet beneath this surface of independence lie significant drawbacks. Financial security often escapes most gig workers, who typically don’t receive health coverage, retirement plans or paid leave. During economic downturns, gig workers are especially vulnerable, as seen during the pandemic when many lost income overnight.
The psychological strain often goes unnoticed. Working alone without colleagues can lead to feelings of isolation, while the constant pressure to secure new projects creates persistent stress. Many freelancers describe their experience a “feast-or-famine” cycle.
Interestingly, studies show that hybrid models — combining gig work with part-time traditional jobs — lead to the highest satisfaction. This approach provides stability while retaining flexibility. A junior developer working remotely for a fintech startup develops custom ChatGPT plugins for e-commerce clients via Toptal. The steady startup salary covers living expenses, while high-margin freelance projects fund his AI upskilling courses.
Policy makers and companies are now exploring innovative ways to improve gig workers’ conditions.
Some propose portable benefits, where workers carry insurance and retirement plans across jobs. Others suggest minimum wage guarantees for platform-based gigs.
As the gig economy continues expanding, its ultimate impact will depend on how society addresses these structural challenges. For individual workers, success increasingly means navigating the delicate balance between cherished freedom and essential security — a balancing act that may redefine work for generations to come.

【答案】The gig economy, referring to freelance and short-term work, has both merits and demerits. It offers flexibility and skill diversification but poses risks like financial insecurity and stress. Hybrid models combining gig and traditional work can provide stability, while policy reforms like portable benefits and minimum payment enhance security. Balancing freedom and security is key to reshaping future employment. (59)

Dear teachers and classmates,
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you for listening!
【答案】Dear teachers and classmates,
Good morning. I’m Li Ming. It’s my honor to deliver a speech on the theme: “Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it.”
In my view, this sentence reveals the true essence of life. We can’t control all unexpected things happening to us — they are the 10%. But what really determines our life quality is our attitude and response, which account for the 90%. A positive reaction can turn difficulties into opportunities, while a negative one may make small setbacks insurmountable barriers.
Last semester, I failed my monthly English exam. I was really frustrated and wanted to give up. But then I realized complaining was useless. I analyzed my mistakes carefully, asked teachers for help, and spent extra time practicing listening and writing. Gradually, my English scores improved.
Life is full of ups and downs. Let’s keep a positive attitude and embrace life bravely.
Thank you for listening!

Firstly, it uses a survey: 350 employees answer 57 questions about their company. Secondly, Fortune looks at important ___11___ of companies: for example, pay, benefits, and communication between workers and management. Finally, the magazine ___12___ the results to find its Top 100.
Wegmans Food Markets, which ranks No. 1 on the list, has a motto (座右铭), ‘Employees first, customers second’, and it is also one of the 50 largest private companies in the US, with annual sales of $3.6 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Apparently, being good to your employees is no ___13___ to making money.
How much of Wegmans’ success is due to the company’s policies? ‘Up to a point, the success is because of the freedom they give us,’ says one employee. ‘On the other hand, no company gets rich just by not being ___14___ to its employees. Wegmans has great marketing strategies and it’s ___15___ within the community. I’ve been here for 15 years. Looking back, I’d say that the company’s ___16___ for customers, such as the Shoppers’ Club electronic discount programme in the 1990s, have been just as important as the benefits to staff. ’
But the employee benefits are ___17___. Fundamentally, Wegmans believes in ___18___ development. As well as scholarships, the company gives its employees business opportunities. For years, one employee made delicious cookies for her colleagues. ___19___, she started selling the cookies in Wegmans. ‘I just asked the manager,’ she says. ‘While looking back, I think should have asked earlier. I could have made more money!’
The staff’s freedom to make decisions is another thing you won’t ____20____ everywhere. Essentially, Wegmans wants its workers to do almost anything to please the customers. Believe it or not, an employee once cooked a Thanksgiving turkey in the store for a customer because the woman’s turkey, bought in Wegmans, was too big for her oven.
Ⅱ. Reading Comprehension (45分)
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that bestfits the context.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one thatfits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
When experts ponder the future of automobiles they tend to focus on driverless cars and flying cars.
Summary Section: At the bottom summarize the main ideas in one or two sentences.
C. It transforms notes into actionable tools for further learning.
D It reduces the mental load when testing yourself with self-quiz questions.
42. Imagine you are the student council president organizing a charity event at your high school. How would you apply the Cornell Method to capture the most important information during the planning meeting?
A. Write the event schedule in the cue column.
B. Note key points and tasks in the note-taking area.
C. Summarize the main goals in the summary section.
D. List potential sponsors in the summary section.
A foundational theory comes from John Locke an 18th century philosopher who rejected the idea that personal identity is tied to the body (a view known as animalism) or the soul (a religious or metaphysical claim).
A. A lady still remembers her first day of high school clearly but forgets her recent birthday.
B. Identical twins share the memory of a unique childhood event they both experienced.
C. A man now recalls yesterday’s chat where they laughed about a trip two months ago.
D. A student claims to remember an examination, in strikingly vivid details, he never took.
46. What does the passage mainly want to convey?
A. To introduce John Locke’s and Derek Parfit’s theories about personal identity.
B. To explain the reasons why the puzzle of personal identity has existed for millennia.
C. To show the real-world implications of the considerable debate on personal identity.
D. To present the philosophical puzzle of personal identity and its value for reflection.

From Selling Books to Selling Life
From the largest female bookstore in Europe to the first detective novel store in Europe, from independent bookstores to large chain ones, Charing Cross Road is the most famous bookstore street in London. 84 Charing Cross Road, published in 1970, tells the story of the New York woman writer Helene Hanff and the London bookseller Frank Percy Doel. ____47____ Charing Cross Road has thus become a cultural landmark in London, attracting many literary enthusiasts and tourists with its unique literary charm.
However, today’s situation is no longer the same. With the closing of a number of chain bookstores, some independent bookstores have begun to think about how to continue the British literary tradition with dignity. ____48____
Judging from the current business model, those who can survive are completing the transition from selling books to selling life. As the largest independent bookstore in the United Kingdom, Waterstone is currently undergoing design changes by LDS, a British architectural firm. Architect Alex said they focused on improving customer experience and planned to build multiple spaces. “We will have some small rooms full of books, like private study rooms, in which one can discuss his works with the author.” The focus of the future physical bookstore is on creating an atmosphere. ____49____ Booksellers and authors generally believe that bookstores must develop in the direction of a cultural complex so that people come here for a lot of activities, attending concerts, watching movies, or participating in discussions.
Some writers say that physical bookstores can expand their business beyond selling books and provide cultural services to customers. Others believe that bookstores can adopt a membership system. ____50____ Corresponding membership activities are conducted for children and students, and visiting bookstores should become part of the daily lives of more people as a cultural leisure method.
A. Ever since, adaptations brought the book to new audiences and were incredibly popular, though they received mixed critical reviews.
B. In addition to discounts, members are given the opportunity to attend lectures, literary gatherings and meetings with authors.
C. Recently, British book agents, writers, bookshop operators and other groups gathered here to explore the survival model of the future bookstore.
D. After translations into several languages, broadcasting, stage plays, and movies continue to interpret this friendship based on books.
E. The literary lifestyle of the British, which is deep rooted in its national character, is bound to survive the crisis of existence.
F. Therefore, bars and cafes are an essential part of the bookstore to improve the comprehensive experience for visitors.
