独具创意的北京中学文创社团
In early November, 13-year-old Lin Jiawen, a student at Beijing Academy, bought a rabbit card holder (支架). The product is from the school’s Cultural Creativity Club. “I love this design (设计) because it has our school values (价值) on it,” said Lin.
The Cultural Creativity Club is one of the most popular clubs at the school. It started after a school trip to Henan earlier this year. “The rich culture inspired (激发) us to create products (产品). We wanted to mix old traditions (传统) with new ideas in those works,” said Peng Shaohang. The 14-year-old started the club with other students.
The school rabbits gave them the idea for the rabbit card holders. The students really like these animals. The holders also show the school values: Benevolence (仁), Wisdom (智), Courage (勇) and Happiness (乐). Each rabbit shows one of these values. For example, the kind rabbit plants trees to help the environment. The happy rabbit plays a guitar to bring joy.
The club is selling products both online and in stores. Money from sales goes to people who need it. “Through creativity (创新), we’re making a difference in our school and community (社区),” said Kan Zhixing, a 14-year-old student in the club.

There is a magic bank account (银行账户). Every day, you put $86,400 into the account. However, the account doesn’t keep the money forever. You’ll lose all the money if you don’t spend it that day. So you’d better spend it all and make each dollar count!
All of us have a bank like this. It’s called time. Every morning, you have 86,400 seconds to spend. But at the end of the day, those seconds are lost. Your “balance” doesn’t carry over to the next day. You can’t use more time than you are given. Each day, your “account” starts fresh.
That’s why you have to make every day count. Do something fun. Do something difficult. Do something that surprises you. Do something kind. The important thing is to realize how important and precious (宝贵的) your time is. One day, you’ll reach the end of your life and you won’t have any time left to spend at all. Helping the blind
A US boy wins a contest by making an electronic braille reader
美国男孩发明价格低廉的电子盲文阅读器
In October, 14-year-old Yash Mehta from the US won first place in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. He made an electronic braille reader (电子盲文阅读器).
Mehta had the idea when he visited his grandfather in India. His grandfather helps run (经营) a school for the blind (盲人). Mehta found that none of the students there had an electronic braille reader. Then he learned that most readers cost (花费) around $3,000 (about 21,900 yuan).
So, Mehta decided (决定) to make a model that cost less than $50. After many tests, he made a small reader. It only costs $35, with 86 percent accuracy (准确率).
It’s important to have cheaper braille readers for blind students. “[Bringing down] the cost of braille readers is [very important] to make education (教育) more [possible] for everyone,” Mehta said.
For Mehta, cutting the cost of the reader is not enough. He is now working with schools to make the reader easier to use. He hopes to give 1,000 free readers to blind people in poorer countries each year.

A food critic shares what makes her job fun
美食评论家:不仅是“吃吃吃”这么简单!
I love eating great foods at restaurants. I want to know how a food critic (美食评论家) works. -----Liu Junze, 14
I’m a food critic from Shanghai. I put my food reviews (评价) on WeChat and Xiaohongshu. -----Liu Xiaoyi, 36
Q: What do you love about being a food critic?
A: I enjoy talking to and making friends with food lovers. We often talk about good food at amazing restaurants. I go to many places in China, such as Yunnan, Guizhou and Fujian to taste the local (当地的) food. Each time I go to a new place, I go to local food lovers for great restaurants.
Q: What do you do when you eat at a restaurant?
A: I take notes every time I eat out. I write down my feelings about each dish, and how different parts of the dish come together. I don’t want to just talk about simple information you can find online. Instead, I want to talk more deeply about the food, such as its history and what I think about the food.
Q: What do you talk about in your reviews?
A: I look at what makes a dish special in different ways. For example, how it looks, the ingredients (配料), how fresh the food is and the balance (平衡) of flavors (口味). I also talk about a restaurant’s service (服务) and environment (环境).
Q: What makes a good food critic?
A: A good food critic should eat at restaurants a lot. For example, after trying mapo tofu cooked by 30 different chefs (主厨), I now have standards (标准) to judge (评判) the dish. It’s also important to read books and food reviews by other critics to grow your understanding of food. Being good at talking to people helps as well. When you enjoy a great dish, you can talk to the chefs to learn about how it was cooked.

“Thank you for your email. I have left to [go after] my dream of knitting (织) sweaters for penguins (企鹅) in Antarctica (南极洲) ... I will be out of office ... until my penguin friends are happy.” A UK teacher answered her student with this email. It became very popular online these days.
Knitting sweaters for penguins is a real activity. The Penguin Foundation (基金会) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia started it to save (拯救) penguins. There was a bad oil spill (石油泄漏) near Phillip Island in the 1990s. This hurt the baby penguins and made their numbers go down.
So, the foundation asked people to help make sweaters for the penguins. These sweaters keep the penguins warm and stop them from eating the oil.
In 2001, another oil spill happened. This time, the sweaters helped to save 96 percent of the penguins.
DETAILS OF THE SWEATER
To make sure the penguins are wearing good clothes, the foundation has given some guide for knitters in detail. For example, the finished sweater should be no more than 18 cm long, the width across the body no more than 12 cm and the width of the bottom opening no more than 11 cm.

Time to clean your tech
Our everyday tech can get very very dirty小心!电子产品上好多细菌
Computers, phones, headphones (耳机)... We use many tech devices (科技设备) every day. Sometimes, we put them on the dining table or on our beds. But that is a bad idea because they can be very dirty.
Scientists in the US did a study. They tested 38 tech devices and found headphones to be the dirtiest. Some had over 3,000 bacteria (细菌) groups on them. That makes them seven times dirtier than a normal toilet (马桶) seat. It has around 425 groups.
Phones are cleaner. They have about 187 bacteria groups on them. But we touch phones a lot, so we can easily catch bad bacteria from them. These bacteria can make our eyes, ears and skin sick. Some people may even get pneumonia (肺炎) because of them.
We should clean our tech devices often after we use them. It is also important to keep them away from the dining table and wash our hands before eating.

Different kinds of club activities help students stay active and busy
多彩种植活动,丰富校园生活
This semester (学期), students at Gaoxin Junior Middle School of Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School can join their favorite club activity classes. There are 55 different clubs, such as sports and music, for them to choose from. They go to their classes every Thursday from 4:40 pm to 6:05 pm.
Students really like the soil and hydroponics club (水土栽培社团). In each class, students first learn how to tell plants from one another and how to plant them in the right place. Then, they have 10 minutes to look closely at real plants. At last, they can plant their plants in the school garden! They need to find the best way to plant different plants. For example, strawberries grow well in water and apples love soil (土).
“It’s interesting but also difficult,” said 13-year-old Wang Yijie, “In hydroponics (水栽培), different plants need to stay in water with different PH levels (酸碱值). So, I need to make the water right for each plant by adding acid (酸) in different amounts (量). This helped me learn a lot.”
Sun Ningjia, 12, Gaoxin Junior Middle School of Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School, Guangdong

Fishers brave the cold for big catches 查干湖冬捕:凿冰捕鱼正当时
It is the coldest time of the year. At 4:00 am, fishers in Jilin are already crossing an ice lake. They bring tools (工具) like nets (网) and hooks (钩子) to go fishing in the lake.
At the end of every year, from mid December to mid January, people start ice fishing in Chagan Lake, Jilin. The lake is one of China’s biggest freshwater (淡水的) lakes. And there are 68 kinds of fish in it. Bighead carps (胖头鱼) are the most famous among them.
The fishers can get hundreds of tons (吨) of fish in one catch. The largest one in the first catch is the “star” fish of the year. And it can be sold for a high price.
Winter in Northeast China is long and cold. The fishers there have to break the ice to make a living. They have done this for about 1,000 years. With the year 2025 around the corner, let’s wish the fishers a good harvest (丰收)!
How to catch fish on the ice
Step 1 Find the fish
The leader (领队) of the fishers finds the best fishing place. Fishers need to lie (躺) down, letting their ears touch the ice to hear the fish carefully.
Step 2 Cut holes
Fishers cut hundreds of holes (洞) in the ice, making a circle. They must be careful not to fall into the lake while doing this.
Step 3 Set the net
Then, they place a big net under the ice. The net goes along the holes and rounds up (围起来) the fish.
Step 4 Pull in the net
After 7 to 8 hours of hard work, they pull the net out of the water through a big hole. There are a lot of fat fish inside it.

Speaking on your own
Babies can make their own sentences at 2.5 years old儿童什么时候摆脱牙牙学语?
When we were little babies, we often copied how our parents’ talked. But later on, we started putting words together in our own ways. When did this change happen?
Scientists at the University of Chicago in the US did a study. For 90 minutes every four months, they recorded (记录) 64 English-speaking kids talking with their parents. At about 2.5 years old, the kids started using both “a” and “the” before the same noun (名词). For example, they could say “the dog” after hearing “a dog”. This shows the kids already learned a rule of English, and could say new things all by themselves.
But the scientists could not record all the time. So they could not know everything the kids heard or said. To get a better result, they made a special computer. The computer “listened” to about 30 months of recordings. It copied how the kids made progress. In the end, it put together words the same way as the kids did.
Early Talking stages
Children usually speak their first words around their first birthday. Before that, they go through three stages (阶段) of talking.
1-6 months
Babies make simple sounds like “ooh” and “aah”.
4 to 10 months old
Babies can make more different sounds like “pa” and “ba”, and longer ones like "a-ga", "a-da" and “ba-ba-ba-ba-ba”.
9 to 12 months old
Babies can make very long strings (串) of sound, a little like real talking. But these sounds usually do not mean anything.
1. According to the study, when do children start putting words together in their own ways?
_______________________________________________________________________
2. What does the underlined “this” refer to in Paragraph 2?
_______________________________________________________________________
3. Why did the scientists make a special computer?

5. What did the scientists find about the computer in the end?

D Drinking’ like an animal
It’s not just humans who enjoy a “drink” 原来很多动物也会“喝酒”!
It sounds impossible, but many wild animals “drink” alcohol (酒精).
Animals like monkeys and fruit flies eat fermented (发酵的) fruits and nectar (花蜜). These have a type of alcohol called ethanol (乙醇). Scientists now think this happens more often than we thought.
Ethanol has been around for about 100 million years. Today, most fermented fruits have one percent to two percent alcohol. Some even have up to 10 percent.
Many animals have genes (基因) to break down ethanol. Some are better at it because they often eat fermented fruit and nectar. But for other animals, it could be dangerous (危险的) because it can make them drunk. Some birds might crash (撞) into trees or buildings while flying.
However, there are also good things about ethanol. It gives animals energy (能量).

Notre-Dame Cathedral soon to reopen
The famous Paris building will open better than ever after a terrible fire in 2019
巴黎圣母院马上要重开,火灾元凶找到了吗?
On the evening of April 15, 2019, people around the world watched as the Notre-Dame Cathedral (巴黎圣母院) caught fire. Five years after the fire, the cathedral will reopen on Dec 8.
In the last five years, people have tried to find out how the fire started but couldn’t. Some think that the fire started because of an electrical (与电有关的) problem or a thrown-away cigarette (烟). But experts say there is no reason to think someone started the fire on purpose (故意).
Workers are fixing the cathedral to make it look like it did before. The stained (彩色的) glass windows have got back their colors. To keep the cathedral safe, workers put in pipes (管道). These pipes can let out water if there is another fire.
Once the cathedral reopens, it may welcome 14 to 15 million visitors yearly, said AFP.
