Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office, I’d watch as he put his personal items away; his watch, wallet, comb and car keys They would always occupy the same spot on the table every time.
Dad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say, “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”
I was more than happy to do it. At age five, this kind of task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, and then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. 1 started to get mad. Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why did he take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Now 28, I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me went on.
Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. On that evening, I helped him carry his bags into his study as usual. When I turned to leave, he asked me to clean his comb. I looked at him for a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink.
It was the same comb. After cleaning it, I passed it back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad had aged. He had wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiled, yet his smile was still as heartwarming as before.
24.From the first three paragraphs, we can learn___________.

Stress is common in modern society. When you decide to do something about your stress levels it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to turn your whole life upside down — quit your job, file for divorce, move to another country. Among all the stress management strategies out there we are forgetting one essential treatment — taking time for rest.
For a long time, psychology was based on a clear division between body and mind. Psychologists focused almost only on what went on between our ears. The body was the responsibility of medical doctors and gym instructors. Recently, however, there has been a growing realization within psychology circles that the body and mind are closely connected with each other, far more than anyone ever imagined. You suffer more from stress when you are feeling run down or are suffering from a flu. If you have a bad night’s sleep, everything is more stressful the next day.
While you are more likely to suffer from stress when you are feeling poorly, you can alleviate it by looking after your body. Rest is actually good for both body and mind. We all need at least a little time to think, to reflect on life and even just to be bored. Your free time is meant for relaxation and recovery, and that is impossible when you have too much to do.
We need to relearn the art of rest, especially in these busy times. Getting enough rest is not just something we should do when we are exhausted. It is only when we take a good rest that we will be able to take a stand against stress. I like to imagine that in a few years from now it will be entirely acceptable to say, “Given how hard I worked last week on our project, this week I am going to take a day off.”
28.Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A.Only modern people feel stressed.
B.Psychologists don’t have to focus on the body.
C.Quitting your job is the best way to reduce stress.
D.Body and mind are strongly interacted with each other.
29.What does the underlined word “alleviate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Develop. B.Increase. C.Relieve. D.Maintain.
30.What can we know about rest?
A.Rest contributes to mental relief. B. Rest will surely make people bored.
C.The idea of rest is well accepted now. D.Rest is needed only when people are tired.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Physical Health Affects the Mind B. Rest is the Secret to Stress Relief
C.Brain Processes Psychological Pain D.Good Life Starts with Stress Management
D
How long does it take for a reader to get a book after placing an order in a library of over 8 million? The answer from a new library in suburban Beijing is less than 15 minutes.
Located in the eastern district of Tongzhou, Beijing Library has become a popular destination since it opened. It received over 80, 000 visits during the three-day New Year holiday. Book lovers are attracted not only by the library’s architectural design, but also by its large collection of books and smart services.
Covering some 75,000 square meters, Beijing Library houses over 8 million books. The towering stacks (书库) on the library’s basement floor contribute to its massive capacity. They are part of the largest single automated storage and retrieval (检索) system for books in China.

A digital guide at the library’s entrance also offers on-demand interactions with visitors. Readers who want to avoid travel to the library can use the online borrowing service, which will deliver the book to their doorstep. The library’s online borrowing service is open to readers not only in Beijing but also in neighboring areas.

8-year-old Evan was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs. Carter opening her shop again.
Several days ago, when Evan was passing by her store, he saw a closed sign on the store’s door. When the shop remained closed for not just two days, Evan was worried he’d never be able to get his “dream job”.
85-year-old Mrs. Carter was a woman selling flowers for a living and Evan had befriended her when he helped her cross the street one day.
Now seeing her again, Evan ran up to her and greeted her. “Can I help you today, Evan? Do you want flowers?” Mrs. Carter asked. Evan smiled, “I’m looking for a job! Can you please hire me?”
“A job?” the elderly lady laughed, thinking Evan was too little for that. But Evan proudly replied he knew many things, like making sandwiches and helping his mom get grocery bags from the car. Mrs. Carter laughed and asked Evan how much money she would have to pay him if she hired him.
Evan shook his head. “All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for that bouquet. Can you hire me?” Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded.
Then for a whole week, Evan would come to Mrs. Carter’s store in the evenings and help her, and having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter’s boredom while she was working. Some customers thought Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter’s business became better.
A week later, on Evan’s last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. While making a huge bouquet for Evan’s mother, Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $200. When handing him the bouquet, she said, “Will you come to see me someday, Evan? I’d be delighted to have you here.”
“I will!” Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs. Carter.

W:They are really nice. There is a lot of space and each house has got three bedrooms and a separate shower room.
M:OK,I see.
W:And there is a garden at the back.John, will you put down your book?Aren't you interested?
M:Not especially.
W:But why?I thought you wanted to move.
M:You are the one who wants to move.
W:But you said the last time your brother stayed,it is impossible to live without an extra bedroom.
M:I didn’t say that.I like this flat.I can walk to work.
W:You could still walk to work if we move.
M:It is farther away, and it is far more noisy near the sports center.
W:But it is not exactly quiet living on this main road.It is simply that we need more space. John, will you at least come and have a look at the new houses?
M:Very well, then, but do not expect to change my mind.
W:OK.We will just look.

Hello, everyone!I'd like to tell you about this wonderful acting club I joined recently. The best thing about it is the teacher,Alice Fisher, who plays a policewoman in a play at Town Theater
now.But you probably know her better as the farmer,in the series Green Valley that was on last year
She's worked as a professional theater actress for about ten years. As well as having three years' experience of appearing in serious drama, she's spent seven years working in comedies,so she has lots of different talents.
The classes are always fun and have two sections. In the first part, rather than practicing anything to do with movement of the body,we focus instead on how to control the voice as an actor. In the second part,we practice our performance skills.
At the moment,we're practicing for a play,The Passenger, which will be on at Town Theater soon. We've got our last practice for the new play on July 13th,with audiences able to come and see it from July 20th for one week.
