He Weijing,a young guide in a southern Chinese city, has noticed a big change recently:More foreign visitors
are flooding in.Fluent in three languages, she works as both a storyteller and cultural sharer, showing travelers

famous landmarks and shares black-and-white old photos to tell the story of the city's rapid development from
farmland to a skyline of tall buildings.A favorite stop is a park where parents look for partners for their children,
causing interesting talks about family and daily life in China.

Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July
5,2023,online issue of Neurology."Our study found that gum (disease and tooth loss were linked to brain
shrinkage(菱缩)in the hippocampus(海马体),which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer's disease(阿尔兹海
默病),”said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi,,Ph.D.of Tohoku University in Sendai,Japan.
The study involved 172 people without memory problems.Their average age was 67.Participants had dental
exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure the volume of
their hippocampus at the beginning of the study. This was measured again four years later. For each participant,
researchers counted the number of teeth and checked for amount of gum disease.
Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left
hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of
brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age,
researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less
tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging.By contrast, for people with severe gum disease the increase in
brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging.
"These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the
teeth,"Yamaguchi said. The findings suggest that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular
dental visits is crucial, and that teeth with severe gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with
appropriate false ones."
Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. The limitation of the study is that it
was conducted in one region of Japan,so the results may not be applied to other locations.
28.What is Yamaguchi's study mainly about?
A.The connection between the teeth and the brain.B.The symptoms of brain shrinkage.
C.Ways to take good care of one's teeth.
D.Causes of gum disease
29.How did researchers reach the conclusion?
A.By referring to previous studies.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By conducting a survey among dentists.D.By proving experts'theory in experiments.
30.What do the research findings indicate?
A.Keeping teeth healthy is of great importance
B.Gum disease is increasing among people.
C.Removing natural teeth is bad for dental health.
D.Doing a routine dental checkup can avoid gum disease.
31.What is expected of the future studies according to Yamaguchi?
A.Exploring treatments for gum disease.
B.Involving people from other places in the research.
C.Seeking new methods to improve brain health.
D.Applying the research to relieve Alzheimer's disease.

A volcanic eruption created a new but possibly changeable island in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. An
underwater volcano next to the Kingdom of Tonga erupted in early September, causing lava (to rise to the
surface. The steam (and water out of it then formed into a new land mass, measuring at over eight acres.
The Home Reef seamount is the place where the volcano erupted on September 10th,2022.NASA's Earth
Observatory noted that it took about eleven hours for the land mass to rise out of the water. The agency published
an image that has spread on social media that shows the size of the new unnamed island.
4
Over the weekend, the Tonga Geological Services stated the island was about 8.6 acres and measured about 50
feet above sea level. While volcanio activities continued to plague the Home Reef, only a couple of neighboring the
Tonga islands were at low risk."All sailors are, however, advised to sail beyond 4 kilometers:away from Home
Reef until further notice,"officials with the Tonga Geological Services noted in a statement.
Underwater volcanic eruptions near Tonga that led to new islands, although uncommon, have happened a few
times over the last two centuries, including in 1852,1857,1984 and 2006.However,NASA's Earth Observatory
showed that many.of these volcanic islands existed only for a few months or years.
"Islands created by undersea volcanoes often last only for a short time, though very few sometimes last for
years.Home Reef has had four recorded periods of eruptions, including events in 1852 and 1857,"the agency noted.
"An island created by a.12-day eruption from nearby Late'iki volcano in 2020 was washed away after two months,
while an earlier island created in 1995 by the same volcano remained for 25 years."
32.What's the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.How an unnamed island formed.
B.How the lava rose to the surface.
C.Why an unnamed island disappeared.
D.Why an underwater volcano erupted.
33.What does the underlined word "plague"mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Change.
B.Improve.

34.Which of the following best describes the islands created by undersea volcanoes?

hang out with them.
On a sunny Saturday,my father had to attend an important meeting in the town in the afternoon and I begged

Toby's house at 5:00 p.m.,and then we will go home together.Have a nice day!"Excitedly jumping into his car,I
dreamt of my happy time in the town with Toby.About 30 minutes later,we arrived at the town and I waved

Tom's bookstore,"not realizing that he had learned about the truth from Toby's parents.
I was ready to be scolded (in the face when he caught me lying. To my surprise, however,he said calmly,
