China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced the Fifth National List of Representative Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, adding 185 items to the list, including the skills of making Luosifen.
Luosifen, or River Snails Rice Noodles,is a dish known for its special smell in the southern Chinese city of Liuzhou. Those who try it say they can never forget the magical taste. Combining the traditional food of the Han people with that of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups, Luosifen is sour, spicy, salty, hot and even smelly after being boiled.
Originating in Liuzhou in the 1970s, Luosifen served as an inexpensive street snack that people outside of the city knew little about. In 2012, Luosifen appeared in a hit Chinese food TV program, A Bite of China. After that it became a household name. And two years later, China had the first company to sell packaged Luosifen.
The development of the Internet, especially the boom of e-commerce and online eating show, has brought this Chinese local food passion to a new level. Luosifen often shows up in videos by food bloggers and eating show hosts. Some videos of how to make Luosifen have even gained millions of views on the website abroad.
The development of the Internet allowed Luosifen to be well received. According to data from some e-commerce platforms, the turnover of Luosifen this whole year was 15 times more than that of last year’s, with the number of buyers growing 9 times year on year. The largest group of buyers was the post-90s generation.

Like many people, I’m always trying to balance tough work deadlines, cleaning the house, and the endless messages on my phone. Last month, I felt really tired all the time. When I went for a regular (常规的) health check, I found out my blood pressure was getting too high. The doctor suggested that I take a few days off to go on a vacation.
Modern life is often busy, which makes many people feel stressed (有压力的). Studies show that stress is a common problem around the world. The World Health Organization says it affects millions of people everywhere.
Planning a trip can be a good way to relax and feel better. Dr. Jane Smith, a psychologist from Cornell University, says, “You don’t need to travel far or stay away for long. What’s important is to step away from your routine (日常事务) and take a break. Visiting new places and trying new things can make you happy and excited.”
Dr. Smith and her team carried out a study involving over 400 participants (参与者) who took short vacations. They assessed the participants’ energy levels both before and after their trips through detailed questionnaires (调查表). The results showed that 94% of the participants reported feeling more energetic after their vacations. This suggests that taking time off, even for short periods, can greatly improve one’s focus and creativity upon returning to work.
“Taking a trip is important, no matter how busy life gets. It’s good for your mind and body,” Dr. Smith says.
