Today marks World Wetlands Day, a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role wetlands play in sustaining life on Earth. This year’s theme, “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” highlights the urgent need to safeguard and restore these endangered ecosystems.
Inspired by the late Prof. Wangari Maathai, an influential Kenyan environmental activist, the 11-year-old Alice Wanjiru takes the lead in conservation. As a National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) ambassador, Alice is calling on her peers to take action. Her innovative campaign, “Grow One Tree on Your Birthday,” is turning birthday celebrations into conservation opportunities. “We usually celebrate our birthdays with cakes and gifts,” she explains. “But what if we also planted a tree? It’s a simple way to give back to the Earth and secure a better future.”
Up to now, Alice’s program has already planted over 20,000 trees. “The late Prof. Wangari’s footsteps are like a compass for me,” she says with a smile. “ With the story of the hummingbird, she taught us that even the smallest efforts can make a big difference. In the face of a raging forest fire, the little hummingbird (蜂鸟) did not despair but took action by carrying drops of water in its beak to put out the fire and save the forest. Just like the hummingbird, I’m doing what I can to protect our environment.”
Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. They provide clean water, support biodiversity, store carbon, and protect communities from floods and storms. Yet, according to the statistics, over 35% of the world’s wetlands have been lost in the last 50 years.
Alice believes that change starts with individual action. “We all have a role to play,” she says. “Whether it’s planting a tree, cleaning up a wetland, or educating others about conservation, every action counts.” Alice’s story serves as a powerful reminder that environmental conservation is not just the responsibility of scientists and policymakers — it is a mission for everyone. With young leaders like her, there is hope that, like the hummingbird, these small but tireless efforts will help put an end to the fire threatening our planet.
24. What motivated Alice to start her environmental journey?
A. The pressure from peers. B. The request from the NEMA.
C. The philosophy of Prof. Maathai. D. The attention to wetland loss data.
25. How did the story of the hummingbird inspire Alice?

C
If you don’t exercise for the sake of exercising, doing five or six vigorous activities every day instead, each lasting 10 seconds or so, can make a big difference. A study in the US has found that people who did a total of just over 1 minute of vigorous activity each day were much less likely to die of any cause in the following six years than those who did none.
Only around 15 percent of adults exercise regularly, says Emmanuel Stamatakis at the University of Sydney. So he and his colleagues have been exploring the health benefits of the incidental exercise people get in daily life, such as walking up a steep hill or carrying heavy loads. They did this by getting people who are already taking part in large health studies to wear monitors for one week to assess their normal activity levels, and then looking at their risk of dying in the following years.
In 2023, the researchers reported results from tens of thousands of people taking part in the UK Biobank study. They found that those who did around 4.4 minutes of vigorous activities a day were 38 per cent less likely to die from any cause in the following seven or eight years than those people who did none.
Now, the researchers have reported the results from 3300 people taking part in the NHANES study in the US, who were generally less fit than those in the Biobank study. In this group, just 1.1 minutes of vigorous activity a day was needed to lower the risk of dying of any cause in the following six years by 38 percent.
This means 1.1 minutes in the US group produced the same relative improvement as 4.4 minutes in the UK group, but it doesn’t mean they reached the same level of health. The US group generally had a lower level of fitness to start with, so their overall risk of dying of any cause was still higher.
“The authors suggest, and I agree, that this may reflect a more inactive, higher-risk population deriving greater benefit from small amounts of vigorous activity,” says Carlos Celis-Morales at the University of Glasgow in the UK.
28.What did the US study find about vigorous activity?
A. About 1 minute daily exercise lowers death risk.
B. Short intense activity replaces regular exercise.
C. Most adults exercise over 1 minute daily.
D. Vigorous activity needs over an hour.
29. How did researchers measure activity?
A. By conducting weekly phone interviews.
B. By checking hospital health records.
C. By using monitors to track daily movement.
D. By using food and exercise questionnaires.
30.What can we infer about the US group (vs UK group)?
A. They were more physically active.
B. They needed less exercise for benefits.
C. They had lower overall death risk.
D. They improved health more quickly.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A. Popularity of vigorous exercise.
B. Two studies’ exercise duration findings.
C. Sharp decline in global adult fitness.
D. Benefits of short vigorous incidental activity.
D
SMART is a goal-setting framework that helps you define clear, achievable objectives. Although it’s often used to measure employee performance in the workplace, it can be a useful tool for managing your finances.
An acronym, SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Whether you want to save for retirement, plan a vacation, or pay off debt, the SMART framework can help you stay focused and make steady progress toward your financial goals.
The SMART framework can help you reach any big financial goal by turning it into a series of clear, manageable steps.
Say you want to save $1 million for retirement over the next 25 years. That’s a tall order, considering the average 35- to 44-year-old had just $46,000 saved in a dedicated retirement account in 2022, according to the Federal Reserve. But even if you’re starting from scratch, breaking that goal into smaller pieces can make it feel more achievable.
For example, let’s say you’re paid twice a month and contribute $125 each pay period to an employer-sponsored 401(k) plan or an individual retirement account (IRA). If you assume an 8% annual return, the $250 you set aside each month would grow to about $230,000 in 25 years—well short of your $1 million target.
To improve your chances, you could set a goal to gradually increase your contributions. By raising the amount by $12.50 each paycheck for the next six months, you’d eventually be contributing $400 a month—an approach that’s specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
Still, you may fall short of your $1 million goal. But depending on where you are in your career, you can revisit and revise your contribution amount as your earnings grow. Adjusting your SMART goals over time allows you to stay focused on your long-term target and incorporate what’s changed in your life and finances.
32.What does the underlined word ‘acronym’ probably mean?
A. A word from shortening a long phrase.
B. A word from first letters of a word group.
C. A tool for setting clear financial goals.
D. A list of financial principles.
33.What can we infer from $125 per paycheck?
A. It may not meet long-term retirement targets.
B. It’s higher than 35-44s’ average savings rate.
C. It’s a common amount for an IRA account.
D. It can partly ensure retirement security.
34.How does the author explain SMART ’s value in finance?
A. Compare with other goal-setting methods.
B. List brief mentions of its five principles.
C. Use a retirement case to show its use.
D. Give examples of common financial problems.
35.What advice does the author give on SMART financial goals?
A. Adjust when earnings or life change.
B. Stay fixed to focus on long-term targets.
C. Revise only when income grows greatly.
D. Set beyond current financial ability.
An adult African elephant consumes a great amount of food and water daily. Their appetites keep them moving thousands of miles across Africa each year. But illegal hunting, fenced farmland, and roads can disturb their regular migration patterns.
Despite these challenges, elephants have different reasons for traveling. Females live with their children, and they quickly eat up the food supply around them. 36 Male elephants live alone, which means they don’t eat as much. Instead, they migrate to find their mates during their mating cycle.
Migrating is no easy task and the number-one problem for elephants is illegal hunting. For instance, the lead female of the herd (象群) keeps ancient migration routes in her head and usually has the biggest teeth. 37 But once the female lead dies from illegal hunting, the herd may wander aimlessly or even starve to death.
Furthermore, migration paths are often cut off due to human activities. Farmers often build fences to protect crops, which block migration paths. 38 Elephants know it is dangerous to cross unprotected roads outside the national park boundaries. Studies show many elephants walk far out of their way to avoid unprotected roads while some won’t cross at all.
39 This dangerous situation can lead to competition for food and water. The habitat can become overpopulated, threatening other animals that live there.
Even though African elephants are the largest land animal, they are hard for scientists to follow. Scientists, wildlife organizations, and governments cooperate to map routes that elephants use most.
40
As a conservationist puts it, “If you are able to conserve an elephant, you’ll also conserve many other species that are too small to be noticed.”
A.So, they move in search of food.
B.Roads also trouble elephant migration.
C.Crops are often destroyed by elephants.
D.That way, they can create safe paths for them.
E.When the females move, the males also follow.
F.This makes them a major target for illegal hunters.
G.As a result, elephants may get trapped or separated.

Born into a poor family in 1930, he graduated from college in 1953. Since then, 61 (find) ways to grow more rice became his life goal. He saw the great need to increase food production because hunger was once 62 serious problem in the countryside.
Yuan lived a simple life and cared little about fame. He believes that a person with too much money has more rather than fewer troubles. Therefore, he donated much of his money 63 young scientists to support their research.

A Blue-Dress Day
“Why are you wearing your red dress? Wednesday is the blue-dress day.” asked Sherry, one of my friends in my sixth-grade class.
It never occurred to me that anyone would notice I had only two school dresses: a red dress and a blue one. The red dress was my favorite. To conceal my embarrassment, I made up an excuse, but her question stuck with me. There was no judgment in Sherry’s question, just curiosity.
After school, I climbed up a big oak tree and looked at my simple white house, and thought about my friends’ bigger, fancier homes. For the first time in my life, though, I felt poor.
Every time my friends came to visit, Mama would bake a chocolate cake and play board games with us around the kitchen table. Each time a new book by my favorite writer came out, she would save enough money to buy it. Until the day when Sherry asked about my red dress, I had never compared my clothes, my little white house, or my life to anyone else’s.
That evening, helping Mama cook, I finally worked up the courage and asked, “Mama, are we poor?” She smiled, not upset. Much to my surprise, she patiently explained that while we didn’t have extra money, we had everything we needed: a warm home, enough food, and clothes to wear.
Noticing my frustrated look, Mama handed me a brown paper bag. Inside was the latest in my favorite series with a quote on the cover “Happiness resides not in possessions, and not in gold; happiness dwells in the soul.” Mama looked at me gently, her eyes encouraging me to share my troubles.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Feeling nervous but encouraged, I told Mama what had happened in school.

C篇
A 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据第一段最后一句“A study in the US has found that people who did a total of just over 1 minute of vigorous activity each day were much less likely to die of any cause in the following six years than those who did none.”(美国的一项研究发现,每天总共进行仅1分多钟高强度活动的人,在未来六年内因任何原因死亡的可能性比那些不进行任何活动的人要小得多。) 故选A。
根据第三段第二句“They did this by getting people who are already taking part in large health studies to wear monitors for one week to assess their normal activity levels...”(他们通过让那些已经参与大型健康研究的人佩戴一周的监测器来评估他们正常的活动水平……)
根据第六段“This means 1.1 minutes in the US group produced the same relative improvement as 4.4 minutes in the UK group, but it doesn’t mean they reached the same level of health. The US group generally had a lower level of fitness to start with...”(这意味着美国组1.1分钟的活动产生了与英国组4.4分钟活动相同的相对改善,但这并不意味着他们达到了相同的健康水平。 以及第七段专家的话“...this may reflect a more inactive, higher-risk population deriving greater benefit from small amounts of vigorous activity”(……
B 33. A 34. C 35. A
根据第二段第一句“An acronym, SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.”
根据第五段“If you assume an 8% annual return, the $250 you set aside each month would grow to about $230,000 in 25 years—well short of your $1 million target.”(如果你假设年回报率为8%,那么你每月存下的250美元在25年后将增长到约23万美元——远低于你100万美元的目标。) 故选A。
根据最后一段最后一句“Adjusting your SMART goals over time allows you to stay focused on your long-term target and incorporate what’s changed in your life and finances.”(随着时间的推移调整你的SMART目标,可以让你专注于长期目标,并纳入你生活和财务状况中发生的变化。) 故选A。
A 37. F 38. B 39. G 40. D
上文提到“Females live with their children, and they quickly eat up the food supply around them”(雌象和幼象生活在一起,它们很快会耗尽周围的食物资源),此处需要一个承接“食物耗尽”结果的句子。 故选A。
上文提到“the lead female of the herd keeps ancient migration routes in her head and usually has the biggest teeth”(领头雌象掌握迁徙路线且象牙最大),下文说“But once the female lead dies from illegal hunting...”(但一旦领头象被非法猎杀……),可见此处需解释领头象为何成为猎杀目标。选项F“This makes them a major target for illegal hunters”(这使它们成为非法猎人的主要目标)中,“This”指代上文“象牙最大”的特点,与下文的非法猎杀直接因果关联。故选F。
上文提到“Farmers often build fences...which block migration paths”(农民建围栏阻断路径),下文提到“Elephants know it is dangerous to cross unprotected roads...”(大象知道穿过无保护道路危险),可见此处需从“围栏”过渡到“道路”。
上文描述道路阻碍迁徙,大象绕路或不敢过,下文说“This dangerous situation can lead to competition for food and water”(这种危险的情况导致食物水源竞争),可见此处需总结迁徙受阻的直接后果。选项G“As a result, elephants may get trapped or separated”(结果,大象可能被困或隔离)中,“As a result”呼应前文阻碍,且“被困或隔离”自然引出下文的资源竞争问题。

Version 1:
Dear David,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re facing increased academic pressure and consider quitting the debate club. It’s completely understandable for a Senior 2 student to feel this way.
In my opinion, it might be a good idea to focus on your studies. First of all, it is a crucial time to lay a solid foundation for your future. I recommend that you step down from your role temporarily. This way, you can concentrate on your schoolwork without extra stress. You can still participate in debate activities occasionally when you have time.
Please keep it in mind that taking a break doesn’t mean giving up entirely. I believe this decision will help you make progress academically while keeping your passion for debate alive.
Version 2: 折中
Dear David,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling to balance your role as debate club president with the academic pressure of Senior 2. It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed during such a busy time.
I recommend that you take a step back and rethink your priorities. Firstly, as your studies require more attention now, it is advisable to reduce your responsibilities in the club. Moreover, it is a wise choice to turn to other club members for help and share the workload. This way, you can focus on your academic goals while still staying connected to the club.
I hope you find my suggestions helpful. I’m sure you’ll find a balance that works best for you.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
Version 3:
Dear David,
I totally understand the pressure you’re experiencing as a Senior 2 student, but I advise you not to quit the debate club.
Firstly, it is a valuable experience to be a leader, which sharpens your interpersonal skills and improve your productivity at work. Instead of leaving, it would be better to seek help from club members and share the burden. Not only can it ease your anxiety but also improve your ability to strike a balance between studies and hobbies. Given its long-term benefits, I strongly recommend that you stick with it and find a balance.
With proper time management and a strong will, I’m confident that you’re capable of handling both your studies and the club.
Best regards,
Li Hua
(I know how you feel)、建议(I'd recommend.../Why not consider...?) (I'm sure.../Wish you all the best!)
Feeling nervous but encouraged, I told Mama what happened in school. With my head hung low, I poured out how I feared that we were poor, tears welling up. Mama listened quietly, her hand gently patting my back. When I finished, my voice trembling, she wiped the tears from my cheeks tenderly. “My dear, richness isn’t about what you have in your closet, but what you have in your heart.” Her words felt like a ray of sunshine, melting my uneasiness away. I nodded, and slowly, my shame faded, replaced by a strange, new warmth.
On Wednesday, seeing the neatly ironed blue dress, I made up my mind. When I arrived at school wearing the red dress, Sherry came over and asked the same question. This time, I smiled confidently. “Red is my favorite,” I said. “It’s like the joy Mama gives me.” She nodded in agreement, saying red was her favorite too. We exchanged a look and burst into laughter—the invisible ice between us had melted. Looking at her blue dress, I realized I was rich in what truly mattered: I had a mother who filled our home with laughter and love.
Feeling nervous but encouraged, I told Mama what happened in school.
On Wednesday, seeing the neatly ironed blue dress, I made up my mind.
Para 1: ① 抄袭原文大量语句(扣 10-12 分);
② 没有描写与妈妈的对话倾诉(扣 3-4 分);
③ 没有体现“nervous”或“encouraged”任何一种情绪(扣 2-3 分);
Para 2: ① 抄袭原文(扣 10-12 分);
② 没有明确写出“我”的决定和行动(即最终穿了什么)(扣 3-4 分);
③ 没有续写再次遇到Sherry的场景(扣 3-4 分);
④ “我”的回应方式与第一次没有变化(仍是逃避或撒谎)(扣 2-3 分);
