It’s been ten years since Plainfield’s last snow — and ten years since the accident that changed everything. Tonight, snowflakes were falling from the dark sky, driven by a biting wind. I stood frozen, my hands trembling not from cold, but from all that the snow had come to mean.
As a kid snow once meant joy, but for the last decade, I have only felt anxiety and shame, for I have always blamed myself for Mom’s final farewell on that snowy night when I should have taken the car keys from her drunk hands. Standing in front of my childhood home, now occupied by a new family, making their own sweet memories, I found it looked exactly the same, yet it no longer belonged to me. The memory of the accident felt as fresh as an unhealed wound.
Suddenly, a voice broke the silence. It was Betty, my elder sister I hadn’t seen since Mom’s funeral. She told me she came to this spot every year on the anniversary, and I shouted at her for ignoring me for a whole decade, tears rolling down my face. Then Betty held my hand tightly and explained she had avoided me to protect both of us because she couldn’t bear losing me too after Mom had passed away.
Her next words — “Let me come with you to Florida.” — startled me, leaving a silence that seemed to echo in the open air. Just then, the new homeowner gave a glimpse of us, drawn by the voices. Betty pulled me away, laughing the way we used to when we were little. Snow began to fall softly around us, and this time, I noticed how gently it landed, like a whisper.
Maybe what I had always feared wasn’t the snow itself, but facing it alone. Now, as it fell, a special feeling arrived — soft, persistent, melting the winters long held within.
4. Why did the author feel upset in snowy winters?
A. He was too drunk on that snowy night. B. He failed to stop his mom from drunk driving.
C. He couldn’t dance because of a serious wound. D. He was too anxious and shameful to face his mom.
5. Why did Betty ignore the author for a decade?
A. She put the blame on the author. B. She wanted to forget the accident.
C. She didn’t attend her mom’s funeral. D. She was worried about the loss of the author.
6. What does the underlined word “startled” refer to?
A Shocked. B. Reminded. C. Confused. D. Convinced.
7. How did the author feel in the end?
A. Painful. B. Inspired. C. Relieved. D. Fearful.

In an era of intense academic competition, many senior high students and parents consider community service as a “waste of time”, arguing it distracts energy from homework, exams and college applications. Yet this view overlooks its unique value in shaping well-rounded individuals. As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world, and true education includes nurturing a sense of social responsibility.” This highlights that learning extends beyond textbooks, and community service is a vivid platform for such comprehensive learning.
Community service fosters practical skills that classroom learning alone cannot provide. For instance, Beijing high school students organized a second-hand book sale to raise money for rural children which involved in real-world tasks: negotiating book donations from local stores, designing online promotion posters, and managing funds. This developed their problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills — valued in college and careers.
Beyond skill development, community service deepens teenagers’ understanding of the world. A survey made by Youth Research Institute found that 78% of nursing home volunteers gained deeper empathy (共情) for the elderly’s needs. Instead of seeing the elderly as “isolated groups” in news, they listened to their stories, assisted with daily tasks, and witnessed their loneliness. Many even started calling their grandparents more often, understanding the value of companionship.
Far from a distraction, community service enriches academics by offering real-world contexts for classroom knowledge. A history student learning social justice can witness its impact through community work; a math enthusiast can practice budgeting via charity events.
As Mother Teresa put it, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” For senior high students, embracing community service is not a detour (迂回,绕路) from growth, but a wise investment in lifelong development — cultivating compassion, practical skills and a sense of social belonging.
8. Why do some students and parents dislike community service?
A. It’s useless. B. It’s demanding. C. It’s impractical. D. It’s time-consuming.
9. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Students show more care for the elderly. B. Students hate volunteering at nursing homes.
C. Students regard the elderly as isolated groups. D. Students have higher expectations of the elderly.
10. What benefits can students gain from community service?
A. Acquiring a more colorful college life. B. Attaching greater importance to health.
C. Getting real-world situations for academics. D. Having a deeper understanding of finance.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Who will contribute to community service? B. Why should we embrace community service?
C. Where can we engage in community service? D. How can we participate in community service?
D
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) have played a key role in Earth’s climate over the past 250 million years-but not in the way people expect. Recent research has shown that when coral reefs grew the most, ocean temperatures rose significantly. As corals build their hard structures, they release CO2 and reduce the minerals that deep-sea planktons (浮游植物) need for their shells.
Based on the above findings, Tristan Salles from the University of Sydney built a data-driven model which combined plate movement, climate conditions and seabed materials to analyze how coral reefs and planktons influenced each other. They found geological changes often disrupted their balance: shallow continental shelves, ideal for corals, broke the natural balance between them.
As the data revealed, the balance between corals and planktons directly determines CO2 levels and sea temperatures. The smaller the coral reefs are, the more calcium builds up in the oceans — this helps plankton grow and increases the amount of minerals buried in the deep sea, which in turn lowers CO2 levels and cools the ocean. In contrast, the larger the reefs become, the more minerals they consume, leading to sharp rises in sea temperatures.
According to Salles, the system regains its balance at an extremely slow speed, one that is far slower than the speed of human activities. While corals reefs exactly can make a difference to sea temperatures to a certain extent, human-driven global warming poses the greatest threat.
Building on this research, Alexander Skeels from the Australian National University pointed out that the study uncovered a close connection between living things and climate. We usually assume that species evolve in response to climate changes. But increasing researches show that living things can directly influence climate and this forces us to face a truth: humans are not just bystanders (旁观者) to climate change, but active participants of these changes, with our actions leaving lasting impacts for generations to come.
12. What is a common misunderstanding of coral reefs?
A. They can take in CO2. B. They act as producers of CO2.
C. They compete with planktons. D. They contribute to ocean warming.
13. What is the finding of Salles’ research?
A. Continental shelves are ideal places for planktons.
B. Geological changes affect sea temperatures directly.
C. The balance between corals and planktons matters.
D. The smaller coral reefs are, the higher CO2 levels will be.
14. How does the author stress the threat in paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By explaining concepts. D. By providing evidence.
15. What is Alexander Skeels’ suggestion for climate changes?
A. Take active and joint actions. B. Focus on climate change research.
C. Protect coral reefs and planktons. D. Adapt to species evolution naturally.

In the Philippines, plain-looking Maria dreamed big in her small village. Yet life was hard: her parents struggled in the fields from dawn till dusk, but hardly to make ends meet. As a kid, her mornings were filled with housework before school, and opportunities seemed rare.
One rainy afternoon in class, Maria stared at the blackboard, her mind elsewhere. Her teacher’s voice faded as she pictured her father’s aching back and her mother’s worsening cough. “What’s the point of learning these words?” she thought, “when they’re fighting just to survive?” Her notebook lay open and empty. Dreaming now felt not only impossible, but selfish.
Mr. Reyes, her English teacher, noticed Maria absent-minded over weeks. After class one day, he approached her gently. “Maria,” he began, “Is everything alright?” Staring at her worn shoes. “It’s nothing, sir,” she whispered, voice trembling. “You’ve always been one of my brightest,” he said softly. “But lately, your light seems dim.” Tears fell as she finally admitted: “It’s my family — we can hardly afford anything. How dare I dream while they break their backs just to survive? Maybe I should just quit and help them.” The words tumbled out, heavy with hopeless.
Mr. Reyes listened, his expression softening as he patiently encouraged her, “Look at me — don’t let your circumstances define you. You can make it.” He paused, letting his words sink in. “Your mind is a gift — not just to you, but to your whole family.” Later, Mr. Reyes secured a full scholarship (奖学金) for Mara to a university in the city. And for the first time, Maria realized her hope could become real.
In the city, her perseverance drove her to treat every challenge as a stepping stone. And she did exceptionally well at university. Even before graduation, a famous local company offered her a position. Yet, in their regular phone calls, her parents had expressed their hope that she would return to their hometown to build her future.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
As graduation approached, Maria was faced with a tough decision.

It’s been ten years since Plainfield’s last snow — and ten years since the accident that changed everything. Tonight, snowflakes were falling from the dark sky, driven by a biting wind. I stood frozen, my hands trembling not from cold, but from all that the snow had come to mean.
As a kid, snow once meant joy, but for the last decade, I have only felt anxiety and shame, for I have always blamed myself for Mom’s final farewell on that snowy night when I should have taken the car keys from her drunk hands.
A. Shocked. B. Reminded. C. Confused. D. Convinced.
7. How did the author feel in the end?
A. Painful. B. Inspired. C. Relieved. D. Fearful.
B 5. D 6. A 7. C

根据第二段“As a kid, snow once meant joy, but for the last decade, I have only felt anxiety and shame, for I have always blamed myself for Mom’s final farewell on that snowy night when I should have taken the car keys from her drunk hands. (小时候,雪曾象征着欢乐;但过去十年里,我心中只剩焦虑与愧疚 —— 因为我总在责怪自己,在那个雪夜,妈妈最终离我而去的那一刻,我本该从她醉意朦胧的手中夺下车钥匙的)”可知,作者在雪天感到难过是因为没能阻止妈妈酒后驾车。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Then Betty held my hand tightly and explained she had avoided me to protect both of us because she couldn’t bear losing me too after Mom had passed away.(彼时贝蒂紧紧攥住我的手,向我解释道,她之所以一直刻意疏远我,是为了保护我们俩 —— 因为母亲离世后,她实在无法承受再失去我的痛苦)”可知,贝蒂十年不理作者是因为担心失去作者。
根据第四段“Her next words — “Let me come with you to Florida.” — startled me, leaving a silence that seemed to echo in the open air.(她接下来的话 ——“我陪你一起去佛罗里达吧。”—— 让我startled,周遭陷入一片死寂,仿佛连空气里都回荡着这沉默的余韵)”并结合前文贝蒂十年避而不见,此刻突然提出同行的语境可推断,该词意为“使震惊;使吃惊”。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Maybe what I had always feared wasn’t the snow itself, but facing it alone. Now, as it fell, a special feeling arrived — soft, persistent, melting the winters long held within.(也许我一直害怕的从来不是雪本身,而是独自面对它。此刻,雪花飘落,一种特别的感觉涌上心头 —— 温柔、绵长,融化了长久郁结在心底的寒冬)”可知,作者最终内心的郁结被化解,感到释然。故选C项。

D 9. A 10. C 11. B

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) have played a key role in Earth’s climate over the past 250 million years-but not in the way people expect. Recent research has shown that when coral reefs grew the most ocean temperatures rose significantly.
A 13. C 14. B 15. A

文章首段提到“Coral reefs have played a key role in Earth’s climate over the past 250 million years-but not in the way people expect. Recent research has shown that when coral reefs grew the most, ocean temperatures rose significantly. 故选A项。
文章最后一段提到Alexander Skeels的观点:研究揭示了生物和气候的紧密联系,以往人们认为物种随气候进化,而研究发现生物可直接影响气候;并指出这一结论让人们必须面对一个事实 ——“humans are not just bystanders to climate change, but active participants of these changes, with our actions leaving lasting impacts for generations to come(即人类并非气候变化的旁观者,而是积极参与者,且行为会产生深远的代际影响。)” 故选A项。

As graduation approached, Maria was faced with a tough decision. Whether to build a career in the city or return to her village? With this choice weighing on her, memories flooded back. Her family’s struggle, the worn-out shoes, the mornings spent helping before school. Then she recalled Mr. Reyes’ gentle words, “Your mind is a gift to your whole family.” At that moment, her choice became clear. She would return, not just for her family, but for all the children whose dreams like hers needed a chance to grow.
Returning to her village, Maria started doing something special for the children. Driven by her own past, she established a non-profit organization aimed at educating and empowering disadvantaged children. She worked tirelessly, fundraising and creating programs to give them the opportunities she once lacked. Despite numerous challenges, her work steadily flourished through her persistent efforts — children once without hope now dared to dream, equipped with knowledge and confidence. Her story, spreading far and wide, became a shining example of perseverance, proving that no dream is too big when fueled by unwavering dedication.
