B From the “Sultan of Swat” to the “Colossus of Clout,” no baseball player has been given more eye-catching names than Babe Ruth. But there’s one name for the legendary Babe you might not know: cancer (癌症) pioneer. Ruth, born in February 1895, was the widely known king of baseball by his 30th birthday. By 1925, he had won four World Series and established himself as the sport’s most fearsome hitter. But he was also famous as a heavy eater when he wasn’t on the field. On April 7, 1925, on the way to a game, Ruth told teammates he felt unwell and passed out. Later he had operations to remove one part of his intestine (肠道). Less than a decade later, Ruth found himself back at the hospital in an even more terrible situation and was told he had cancer. Later that year, doctors suggested that Ruth take part in a medical test for an experimental drug (药物), which had only been tested on mice. Ruth, who didn’t want to know what drug he was receiving or why, agreed, making him one of the first patients anywhere to receive the special treatment. Even though Ruth only lived another year, the method did lengthen his life, which was regarded a milestone in medicine. By 1998, 40 percent of patients with the same kind of cancer that Ruth developed, had a survival rate of five or more years. Thanks to Ruth and other patients in the study, treatments are much more effective and specific today. “I realized that if anything was learned about that type of treatment, whether good or bad,” Ruth wrote in his book, “it would be of use in the future to the medical profession and maybe to a lot of people with my same trouble.” 24. What do Ruth’s many titles show? A. His professional struggles. B. His personal experience. C. His widespread popularity. D. His medical contributions. 25. What does the author suggest about Ruth’s health problem in 1925? A. It led to his cancer battle. B. It was related to his eating habits. C. It was solved by an operation. D. It resulted from the game stress. 26 What can be inferred about the cancer treatment Ruth got? A. It was widely used on humans. B. It was forced upon him against his will. C. It lengthened his life by over five years. D. It made a difference to later cancer patients. 27. Which of the following can best describe Babe Ruth? A. Selfless and brave. B. Patient and helpful. C. Gifted and determined. D. Hopeful and confident. C Mosquitoes (蚊子) are found almost everywhere in the world, with the exception of Antarctica and Iceland, due to their extreme cold. But that may be changing. This week, three mosquitoes were discovered in Iceland whose frozen, extreme cold winters have long protected it from mosquitoes—marking the country’s first documented finding of these insects in the wild. A single mosquito from a different species was discovered many years ago on an airplane at the country’s Keflavik International Airport. But this is the first record of mosquitoes appearing in the natural environment in Iceland. These three insects are native to a huge part of the Eastern Hemisphere, varying from North Africa to northern Siberia. It appears well adapted to colder climates, mainly because adults can ride out the cold in sheltered places, which allows them to stand long, cold winters when temperatures drop below freezing. It’s unclear how the mosquitoes arrived in Iceland, but guesses include the possibility that it came through shipments. Further observation will be needed in the spring to see whether the species can survive the winter and truly become established in Iceland. Mosquitoes, which tend to thrive (繁盛) in warmth and wetness, are likely to be one of the few real winners as the planet heats up. As climate change advances, bringing more heat, storms and floods, the habitat of these disease-carrying insects is increasing. Rising temperatures also allow mosquitoes to grow faster and live longer. Iceland is no stranger to the effects of climate change and has experienced record-breaking heat. In May, temperatures in parts of the country were more than 18°F higher than usual. This extreme heat was made 40 times more likely by climate change. But there are still a lot of unknowns about how mosquitoes are acting as the world warms and experts advise against directly connecting Iceland’s discovery with global warming. 28. How does the writer develop paragraph 1? A. By proving a fact. B. By giving an example. C. By making a contrast. D. By presenting a discovery. 29. What can be learned about the mosquitoes in Iceland? A. They were found in the wild. B. They were the first in Iceland. C. They were from North Africa. D. They were of different species. 30. After the mosquitoes appeared in Iceland, researchers will next focus on their ________. A. arrival reason B. habitat preference C. survival outcome D. population control 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Mosquitoes’ Journey to Iceland B. Mosquitoes Make History in Iceland C. The Threat of Mosquitoes in Iceland D. Warming Brings Mosquitoes to Iceland D Most adults cannot remember events from early childhood, a phenomenon (现象) known as infantile amnesia. This is true whether you ask a college student or a grandparent, suggesting adults’ lack of infant (婴儿) memories is not just the result of normal forgetting that happens with the passage of time. There are two possible explanations for this. One is that the hippocampus, a brain area important for memory, is too underdeveloped in infants to store long-term memories. Another is that the infant brain can store memories, but we finally cannot reach them. Recent studies in mice show that the hippocampus not only can store memories early in life but may keep them into adulthood. But what about humans? A research team conducted fMRI studies with infants who were wide awake — a method not tried before because it is hard to study babies who move a lot and are hard to stay focused. Since memory formation depends on wakeful experiences, through over 400 tries and a lot of help from families, the team developed new ways to keep infants calm and interested. In one key test, infants were shown photographs of faces, objects and settings one at a time during fMRI scanning. Soon after, their memory was checked by showing each of these known photographs next to a new image of the same kind. When infants looked longer at the earlier seen photograph, researchers labeled (标记) it as remembered; or it was considered forgotten. Results showed greater hippocampal activity when infants saw images they remembered, especially in those over 12 months old. These results suggest that the infant hippocampus can form memories from short experiences. These findings support that early memories are stored but become hard to reach. Important questions remain: How long do these memories stay? Could earlier memories be found again? Answering these could solve a long-standing scientific problem and help understand language learning, developmental disorders, and memory loss. What’s your earliest memory? Earlier ones may stay hidden in your brain. 32. What do the underlined words in paragraph 1 refer to? A. Memory change with age. B. Lack of infant memories. C. Normal forgetting over time. D. Unwillingness to remember events. 33. What is the challenge in using fMRI to study infants’ memory? A. Getting enough family help. B. Applying a brand new technology. C. Understanding memory formation. D. Keeping the attention of wakeful infants. 34. What did the key test find about infants’ memory? A. Memory improves greatly after age two. B. Memories from babyhood can last for years. C. Infants look longer at what they’ve forgotten. D. Infants store memories they later fail to get back. 35. Why are the important questions mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To guide further studies. B. To raise public concerns. C. To doubt research methods. D. To provide possible solutions. Floods can strike quickly and with little warning in many parts of the world. ____36____ Here is a simple guide to keep you and your family safe. 26. What can be inferred about the cancer treatment Ruth got? A. It was widely used on humans. B. It was forced upon him against his will. C. It lengthened his life by over five years. D. It made a difference to later cancer patients. 27. Which of the following can best describe Babe Ruth? A. Selfless and brave. B. Patient and helpful. C. Gifted and determined. D. Hopeful and confident. C 25. B 26. D 27. 文章第一段“From the ‘‘Sultan of Swat’’ to the ‘‘Colossus of Clout,’’ no baseball player has been given more eye-catching names than Babe Ruth.(从“重击苏丹”到“力量巨擘”,没有哪一位棒球运动员能比贝比・鲁斯拥有如此多亮眼的称号。)”及第二段“Ruth, born in February 1895, was the widely known king of baseball by his 30th birthday.(鲁斯出生于1895年2月在30岁时,就已是享誉盛名的棒球之王。)” 文章第三段“But he was also famous as a heavy eater when he wasn’t on the field. On April 7, 1925... he felt unwell and passed out. Later he had operations to remove one part of his intestine.(但赛场之外,他也因暴饮暴食出了名。1925年4月7日,他突感身体不适并晕厥过去,之后接受了手术,切除了部分肠道。)”,作者在讲述1925年鲁斯的健康问题前,先提到他暴饮暴食,通过句式衔接暗示二者存在关联。故选B项。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。文章第五段“Even though Ruth only lived another year, the method did lengthen his life, which was regarded a milestone in medicine. By 1998, 40 percent of patients with the same kind of cancer that Ruth developed, had a survival rate of five or more years.(尽管鲁斯只又活了一年,但这种疗法确实延长了他的生命,这在医学上被视为一个里程碑。到1998年,患有与鲁斯所患同种癌症的患者中,有40%的人存活了五年或更长时间。)”和第六段“Thanks to Ruth and other patients in the study, treatments are much more effective and specific today.(多亏了鲁斯以及参与这项研究的其他患者,如今针对这类癌症的治疗方法变得更加有效、更具针对性。)” 根据第四段“Later that year, doctors suggested that Ruth take part in a medical test for an experimental drug, which had only been tested on mice. Ruth, who didn’t want to know what drug he was receiving or why, agreed, making him one of the first patients anywhere to receive the special treatment.(那年晚些时候,医生建议鲁斯参与一款实验性药物的临床试验,这款药物彼时仅在小鼠身上做过测试。鲁斯并未追问自己将接受何种药物治疗,也未探究背后缘由,便欣然同意了,这也让他成为全球首批接受该特殊疗法的患者之一。)”可知,鲁斯首批进行人体试验,他是勇敢的;根据最后一段“it would be of use in the future to the medical profession and maybe to a lot of people with my same trouble.(这对未来医疗行业会有所帮助,或许对很多跟我有同样困扰的人也会有用。)” 故选A。 C Mosquitoes (蚊子) are found almost everywhere in the world, with the exception of Antarctica and Iceland, due to their extreme cold. Warming Brings Mosquitoes to Iceland 【答案】28. D 29. A 30. C 31. B 33. D 34. D 35. 根据第一段中的“Most adults cannot remember events from early childhood, a phenomenon known as infantile amnesia. This is true whether you ask a college student or a grandparent, suggesting adults’ lack of infant memories is not just the result of normal forgetting that happens with the passage of time.(大多数成年人记不起童年早期的事情,这种现象被称为infantile amnesia。无论你问大学生还是祖父母,情况都是如此,这表明成年人对婴儿时期记忆的缺失并非仅仅是随着时间推移而产生的正常遗忘的结果)”可知,划线词组infantile amnesia指的是“成年人记不起婴儿时期的事情”,即成年人对婴儿时期记忆的缺失。故选B项。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“A research team conducted fMRI studies with infants who were wide awake — a method not tried before because it is hard to study babies who move a lot and are hard to stay focused.(一个研究小组对完全清醒的婴儿进行了功能磁共振成像研究——这种方法以前从未尝试过,因为研究好动且难以集中注意力的婴儿并不容易)”可知,使用功能磁共振成像研究婴儿记忆的难点在于让清醒的婴儿保持注意力。 根据第四段中的“Results showed greater hippocampal activity when infants saw images they remembered, especially in those over 12 months old. These results suggest that the infant hippocampus can form memories from short experiences.(结果显示,当婴儿看到自己记得的图像时,海马体的活动会更活跃,尤其是12个月以上的婴儿。这些结果表明,婴儿的海马体能够从短暂的经历中形成记忆)”以及第五段中的“These findings support that early memories are stored but become hard to reach.(这些发现证实,早期的记忆被储存了起来,但却难以被提取)”可知,这项关键测试发现婴儿会储存下那些后来无法提取的记忆。故选D项。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Important questions remain: How long do these memories stay? Could earlier memories be found again? Answering these could solve a long-standing scientific problem and help understand language learning, developmental disorders, and memory loss.(仍有一些重要的问题有待解答:这些记忆能留存多久?早期的记忆能否被重新找回?解答这些问题可以解决一个长期存在的科学难题,并有助于理解语言学习、发育障碍和记忆丧失等问题)”可推知,作者在最后一段提出这些重要问题,是为了为后续的相关研究指明方向,引导进一步的探索。故选A项。 Floods can strike quickly and with little warning in many parts of the world. ____36____ Here is a simple guide to keep you and your family safe.
