B If you want to learn about YouTubers or animators (动画师), 7-year-old Gwen is the perfect guide. “When I grow up, I want to be a YouTuber that does animation and also some gaming,” Gwen shares excitedly. “It plays a big part in my life. It gets me in the mood to laugh.” Gwen lives in Maine with her mom Rebekah, her dad Zach, and her brother Erik. Her days are filled with creativity — drawing, painting, and dreaming of the stories she wants to bring to life. But behind her bright smile and big dreams, Gwen is also facing a challenge. Due to a health condition, Gwen needs a diet rich in fresh produce, high fiber, and protein. But those foods can be expensive, especially as her family works to get back on their feet. After facing her own health challenges, Rebekah recently started a full-time job. Zach is working part-time while completing his medical residency. Even with their hard work, money is tight — especially when it comes to healthy food. That’s where the local summer meals program makes a big difference. Gwen and her brother get free, nutritious meals at a nearby library, helping their family stretch their budget while ensuring the kids stay healthy. “They always have sunflower seeds,” Gwen says excitedly. “I love it whenever I can have food that is just good for all of us.” Each summer meal includes a balanced mix of a sandwich, fruit, vegetables, and milk — exactly what Gwen needs for her health. But the meals aren’t just about nutrition — they’re also a chance for Gwen to play with friends, do activities, and be a kid. “I feel like when I draw, I can do anything. It comes to life,” she says with a smile. Through summer meals, Gwen has the fuel to dream big — and a community that makes sure she never has to worry about going without. 4. C With their pure white and bright yellow feathers, cockatoos, the clever parrots about the size of crows, are known for breaking into trash cans in Sydney. Now, scientists have uncovered an even more remarkable skill of them. A group of cockatoos has learned how to operate human drinking fountains (饮水器). They perform a complex set of twists and holds to get water into their mouths. The researchers report in Biology Letters that this behavior, not seen in any other bird, has been so successful that it seems to be spreading among the cockatoo population in western Sydney. This likely represents a local “cultural tradition”. Barbara Klump, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Vienna, has studied Sydney’s cockatoos for years. While doing fieldwork in the western part of the city, she noticed several of these birds sitting on a fence, waiting for their turn to check out a nearby water fountain. To get water, people twist and hold the handle of the fountain, which makes water come out. When Klump got closer, she was astonished to find that the cockatoos seemed to be doing the same thing. To find out more, Klump and her team went back to the area, which is near a big cockatoo resting place. The team set up two cameras near one of the fountains. Over more than a month, the cameras recorded nearly 14 hours of cockatoos around the device. The team identified 525 different attempts at drinking. Each cockatoo had a slightly different way of doing it. But the basic method was similar: They put one or two feet on the fountain’s twist-handle. Then they used their body weight to turn the handle and prevent it from going back. When the parrots drank water from the drinking fountains, their sharp beaks (喙) often left bite marks on the fountain’s rubber top. Barbara Klump says, “These actions show how skillful the cockatoos are with their feet and big beaks. This sets them apart from other smart birds. They’re very creative and good at solving problems, so they can figure out a way to do things eventually.” 8. What do the underlined words “cultural tradition” in paragraph 2 probably refer to? A. A skill trained by humans. B. A born ability of cockatoos. C. A common habit that disappeared. D. A behavior learned and spread. 9. What about cockatoos made Klump surprised? A. Their human-like behavior. B. Their intense competition. C. Their possible damage to the fountains. D. Their special requirement for clean water. 10. Which statement would Klump most likely agree with? A. The size of cockatoos’ beaks is a barrier to their flexibility. B. Cockatoos’ frequent visits have greatly troubled the locals. C. Drinking fountains are set up to provide a shelter for cockatoos. D. Cockatoos’ skilled use of their body contributes to their creativity. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Cockatoos’ Different Ways of Finding Water. B. Cockatoos Learn to Operate Drinking Fountains. C. Protection of Drinking Fountains from Cockatoos. D. Sydney’s Clever Cockatoos Attack Drinking Fountains. D Swiss scientists have created a new plastic-like material that’s flexible, biodegradable (可生物降解), and even fit for human consumption. The material, which was created by a team from Empa in Switzerland, managed to balance biodegradability with toughness and has several different functions. The creation of the material is an achievement that is far from easy in materials science. Researchers turned mycelium (菌丝体)from a kind of mushroom into a liquid mixture. They didn’t kill the mycelium or damage its natural biological functions. The final material is called LFD (living fiber dispersions). It can be made into many shapes, and it uses all the useful things from mushrooms. By growing a special kind of mushroom, researchers made two important molecules (分子)grow better: polysaccharide schizophyllan and hydrophobin. These two molecules are what give LFD its great features. One possible use of the material is as a thin film. The researchers suggest it could possibly be used in bags that naturally break down, or in super-thin biodegradable batteries. LFD also works well as an emulsifier (乳化剂), which enables two other materials to mix together when they otherwise wouldn’t. Emulsifiers are important in food and daily products, found in everything from ice cream to soap. Because it’s still alive, the mycelium keeps producing more of its key molecules. This is probably the only type of emulsifier that becomes more stable as time passes. And because it comes from the eatable mushroom, this LFD is completely non-poisonous too — you can even eat it without any problems. When it comes to foods and makeup, that’s another big plus for the material. The researchers are hoping to find more and more practical uses for LFD over time. This new material joins a long list of inventions that take inspiration from nature. It’s clear proof that the natural world around us is the best laboratory we could ever have. 12. What is the main achievement of Empa researchers? A. Creating a very special material. B. Speeding up the breakdown of plastic. C. Designing an environment-friendly battery. D. Finding out a previously unknown mushroom. 13. What role do polysaccharide schizophyllan and hydrophobin play? A. They prevent mushrooms from growing. B. They stop LFD’s natural breakdown. C. They offer LFD key functional features. D. They make LFD unsafe for humans. 14. What makes the LFD emulsifier unique according to the study? A. It requires no energy supply. B. It can remove poisons in foods. C. It works only in warm conditions. D. Its stability increases over time. 15. What can be learned from the last paragraph? A. LFD has gained wide applications. B. Nature has inspired many great designs. C. Mushrooms grow better in natural settings. D. Field research is better than that in laboratories. Do you want to be a teacher? What is it like to work in the classroom? Here is a typical day of my work in an Auckland primary-school classroom. I try to get to work between 7:00 and 7:30. After lunch, they go to lunch break, and at 12:30, they come back in for ELA, which is like social studies. At 14:45, there’s dismissal (解散)and we’ll wait with the students until their parents pick them up. ____20____ So, some days after school, I’d be in a long meeting discussing topics like instructional leadership, culture, or climate. Meetings are over around 16:15, and I will leave school, at the latest, 17:00. A. I really encourage cooperation. B. Sometimes we’ll just do sports at home. C. Finally, Mia grabbed my hand and wrote “Emma” next to the other names. That week, I spent every evening drafting and practicing my speech. I wrote about starting an after-school homework help group, a monthly book club to share favorite stories, and “suggestion box” so that no one’s ideas were overlooked. I practiced in front of my mirror, my cat, and even my mom, who clapped every time I finished. But on the election day, my courage disappeared. Lina, the outgoing drama club leader, went before me — her speech was funny, loud, and met with cheers so loud that they shook the classroom walls. When Mrs. Smith called my name, I held the speech paper tightly till my fingers whitened. My legs shook as I walked to the front, and all eyes burned into me. I saw some classmates whisper, and Lina sat there smiling confidently, as if she already knew I’d mess up. I opened my mouth, but my throat felt as tight as a fist. “I...I can’t,” I mumbled (嘟哝), and then ran out of the classroom, leaving my wrinkled speech paper on the desk. I hid under the old oak tree in the school garden — the same spot where Mia and I ate lunch every day. Tears clouded my vision. I’d always been shy — too scared to raise my hand in class, too nervous to order food alone. Mia had said this was my chance to step out of my shell, but I’d failed. Just then, I heard footsteps. It was Mia, holding my speech paper. “You didn’t fail,” she said softly. “You just stopped early.” The bell rang, and she pulled me up, “Bravery is going anyway despite being scared.” At that time, I knew what I should do. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To my surprise, the classroom erupted in cheers when I finished the speech. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 江西省九江六校协作体高二期末检测 英语 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? My grandma suddenly fell ill this morning and was sent to hospital. My parents are busy with work, so I have to take care of her and help with daily chores like preparing meals. To make up for this unexpected change, how about we reschedule the visit for next Saturday? I’ll check the museum’s latest exhibition information in advance and book the tickets online to save time. If next Saturday isn’t convenient for you, feel free to tell me your available time, and I’ll adjust my schedule accordingly. I apologize again for the inconvenience caused by this sudden incident. Looking forward to your reply and our upcoming visit to the museum. At that time, I knew what I should do. We walked back to the classroom, my heart beating fast. Pushing the door open, all noise stopped — everyone turned to me. The teacher smiled, “Take your time, Emma.” Mia gave me a thumbs-up. I walked to the front, avoiding the whisperers and Lina’s eyes. Staring at my notes, I took a deep breath and began. My voice was low at first, but as I shared my ideas — homework help and book clubs — it grew louder. I forgot my shyness, speaking as if under the oak tree with Mia. To my surprise, the classroom erupted in cheers when I finished the speech. They were even louder than for Lina. Mia hugged me; even Lina nodded with a smile. After the votes were counted, Mrs. Smith announced excitedly, “Emma wins.” I sat in disbelief, rooted to my seat. That night, I wrote: Bravery isn’t being perfect. It’s trying even when your legs shake and voice cracks. Thanks to Mia, I felt truly brave.
