Dear fellow students,
I'm happy to share my volunteer work here.
Last Sunday, I volunteered at Children's Hospital. When I got there, the kids were a bit shy. I started by reading them interesting books. Then, I told them some funny stories. Their faces lit up with smiles. Volunteer work is truly meaningful. Seeing the kids happy makes me feel warm in my heart. It not only brings joy to others but also makes me cherish what I have.
I'm looking forward to more volunteer activities.
Yours,
Li Hua

It’s not easy to advertise a thing everyone knows in a new way. But Pippi’s Place Pet Rescue, a volunteer organization (志愿组织) from America, makes it. It was named after a black cat, Pippi. She was a street cat and then found a loving family. But at two years old, Pippi was hit by a car and died. Pippi’s Place Pet Rescue then came into being. The organization runs not for money, but for helping more street cats find a home. How does it do this?
Well, it shows their cats as if they were cars. On its website, people can learn about the cats’ age, color and other information. Kayla Delcoure, a member of the organization, had this idea when her family was thinking about buying a car. This is really helpful. Lots of people become interested in these cats. Some people give money to help these cats live better. A man from Canada came to take an old cat home from the organization.
People give these cats a home, and the cats help make people happy, too. A little girl gets a cat from the organization. She sleeps with it every night. This makes her feel safe and warm. The children ran deeper into the tunnel. Before long, they found a boy. He was lying on the ground.

五、任务型阅读(10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
The Ross family is a busy one. The parents, Margy and Scott, both work for big companies and usually spend lots of time traveling for their jobs. Their daughter, Katie, is busy with schoolwork.
Needless to say, great family time is hard to come by. So, vacations are very important. They can help the family grow together.
When Scott didn’t have vacation in 2004, Margy planned a mother-daughter trip that included physical labor (劳动) along with a cultural experience. By searching for international volunteering (志愿服务) chances on the Internet, she found Global Volunteers.
Together, Margy and Katie took part in a building project for a high school in Costa Rica. They really loved being part of the tiny local community and part of a team with like-minded people from different countries. Six months later for their Christmas trip, they went back, taking Scott this time.
Since then, the Ross family have made seven trips to this community on their two-week family vacation each year. As Margy says, “It’s almost like summer camp for the family.”
For Scott, this kind of volunteer work is different because it provides chances to give back and brings personal satisfaction.
“You can really see the fruits of your labor—school dining room and community center,” he says. “And one of the advantages is keeping in touch with a certain community; it’s great to see the community become a better place.”
There was an especially unforgettable experience for the family one year when they visited their local volunteer leader Roberto, who was badly ill.
“Katie and I visited Roberto every day for fifteen minutes. On the last night of our trip, Roberto told us he was thankful because he was making his community such a better place and he could do something great with Global Volunteers,” recalls Margy.
Thinking about the experiences, Scott suggests that families do volunteering together on vacations for many reasons. “There are no expensive hotels,” he says, “but it’s a great way to model some great behaviors (行为) for your kids. I never expected this impacted (影响) Katie. She’s now taking two language classes in high school and hoping to learn about international development in college.”

I'm happy to share my volunteer work here.
Last Sunday, I volunteered at Children's Hospital. When I got there, the kids were a bit shy. I started by reading them interesting books. Then, I told them some funny stories. I'm looking forward to more volunteer activities.

Some people give money to help these cats live better. A man from Canada came to take an old cat home from the organization.
People give these cats a home, and the cats help make people happy, too. A little girl gets a cat from the organization. She sleeps with it every night. This makes her feel safe and warm.
1.What did Margy plan in 2004?
2.Where did Margy and Katie take part in the building project?

It’s not easy to advertise a thing everyone knows in a new way. But Pippi’s Place Pet Rescue, a volunteer organization (志愿组织) from America, makes it. It was named after a black cat, Pippi. She was a street cat and then found a loving family. But at two years old, Pippi was hit by a car and died. Pippi’s Place Pet Rescue then came into being.
