The two men spent their days talking. Every day, the old man sat up in his bed, looked out of the window, and described to the young man the beauty of the outside world. The young man always looked forward to this hour. He listened to his friend’s descriptions (描述) of busy streets, colorful flowers, bright lights of beautiful shops…then, closed his eyes and began to imagine. He expected to see the outside world someday.
One day, the old man passed away (过世). The young man felt sad and he asked to move his bed closer to the window. He thought about the wonderful stories the old man told him. Then he decided to see the outside world for himself.
To his surprise, outside the window, he saw nothing but the hospital wall in front of him. So he called the nurse, asking her if this was the same window his friend used to look out of. If you go outdoors with wet hair on a really cold day, your hair might freeze. Scientists in Norway found an interesting fact— unlike human hair, polar bear fur doesn’t freeze, even after they swim in icy waters, so they began to study what stopped it from freezing.
At first, scientists thought the structure (结构) of the fur might be special. But when they looked under a microscope, they found nothing unusual about the fur itself. With deeper study, they turned their attention to the grease (油脂) on the fur. They washed the grease out of the fur, wet the fur, and tried freezing the fur. Without the grease, the fur froze quickly. Then scientists realized that something in the grease kept the fur from freezing. So they continued to study what it was. After that, they found their fur had a lot of wax ester (蜡酯), which stopped ice from sticking to the fur. This is what finally explained the polar bear’s secret.
Does that mean human hair doesn’t freeze if it’s greasy? To find out the answer, one of the scientists did not wash his hair for a week. The result was disappointing. Although it became greasy, the hair froze as easily as clean hair. That’s because human hair has much squalene (角鲨烯) which makes ice stick to it easily. However, the grease on polar bear fur does not have squalene.
Many of the de-icing products (除冰产品) we use today can be bad for the earth. Luckily, this study makes it possible to develop new de-icing products, which are greener and safer for our ecosystem. That’s the real value of this science.
25. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refers to?
A. The icy water. B. Polar bear fur. C. The cold day. D. Human hair.
26. What helps stop polar bears fur from freezing?
A. The structure of their fur. B. The wax ester on their fur.
C. The weight of their fur. D. The squalene on their fur.
27. The test on human hair shows that ________.
A. clean hair freezes more easily
B. greasy hair freezes more slowly
C. grease stops hair from freezing
D. squalene helps ice stick to hair
28. This study mainly helps us to ________.
A. develop better de-icing products
B. make new hair-washing products
C. find new ways to clean animal fur
D. protect animals living in icy waters
29. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To compare human hair with animal fur.
B. To introduce some ways to do a research.
C. To encourage people to protect polar bears.
D. To explain why polar bear fur doesn’t freeze.

Have you ever thought about what makes Harry Potter characters so special? A fun way to understand them is through the MBTI personality test. It uses four letters to describe how people think and act. “E” is for people who like being with others, while “I” is for those who enjoy quiet time. “S” and “N” are about how you see the world, “T” and “F” are about making decisions (决定), and “J” and “P” are about planning. Let’s see which type these characters are.
Harry Potter—The Brave Adventurer(冒险家) (ISFP)
Harry is often called an ISFP, or the “Adventurer.” He doesn’t always plan ahead. Sometimes he acts quickly to protect his loved ones, even if it’s dangerous. Harry doesn’t talk much about his feelings, but you can see his kindness and bravery (勇气) through his actions.
Ron Weasley—The Loyal (忠诚的) Friend (ENFP)
Ron is always there for his friends. He has the ability to act as a good leader when the team faces a challenge. He often acts first and thinks later. He says what he feels and helps others see things in a new way. He brings humor and energy to the group, which is different from Hermione’s logical (有逻辑的) nature and Harry’s serious personality.
Hermione Granger—The Clever Thinker (INTP)
Hermione is the smartest student in her year. Her personality type is INTP. She loves to learn and always looks for answers. When she makes decisions, she thinks twice. She uses logic to solve problems. She might not have many friends, but she is a very loyal friend to Harry and Ron.
These three characters are so different, yet they make a great team.

Hi, everyone! It’s my pleasure to be here and share my favourite memory from 2025 with you. My favourite memory is about the day I volunteered at a community library. I helped organize books and read stories to children. The kids listened to the stories carefully and asked me lovely questions actively. I also sorted out the messy books on the shelf and put them in order with the librarian. Seeing their happy smiles made me feel warm and useful. This experience taught me the joy of helping others. It also encouraged me to do more for our community in the future. I will always treasure this special memory.
As we step into the new year, I wish all of you wonderful moments! Happy new year!
