Hi Alan,
Guess what? I’m writing to you from Sicily, Italy! Right now, my family and I are in Taormina. It’s a quite beautiful town between the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna.
On our first day, we went to Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano (火山). We took a cable car up to 2,500 metres. As we went higher, the sights changed, from green hills to black volcanic rocks. After the cable car ride, a local friend led us on a hiking tour. Walking on the volcanic rocks was so cool!
On the second day, we visited the Ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina. It stands on a rocky hillside above the Ionian Sea. I was surprised at how big the theatre was: the seating area is 109 metres wide and it can hold 5,000 people! The theatre was first built in the 3rd century BC. It wasn’t just for plays. It was also for important meetings and ceremonies (仪式). But different from other ancient theatres in ruins (废墟) now, this theatre is still used for big shows. It’s amazing that people have enjoyed shows here for thousands of years!
After visiting the Greek Theatre, we toured around Taormina. Everywhere we went, we could see the blue sea shining below. The town’s streets went up the hillside, with colourful buildings, small shops selling local things and nice cafés with outdoor seats. Every corner felt like a postcard!
Later this evening, we’re taking a train to Siracusa, an old town where the classic movie Maléna was filmed! I’ve heard it has ancient wonders and pretty streets—just like Taormina.
This trip has been so fantastic. I wish you could be here to see it all with me!
Love,
Lucas

Why do you need study skills? Because they will make it easy for you to learn and do well in class, especially as you move up to middle school and high school.
Pay attention in class. Do you have difficulty paying attention in class? Are you sitting next to a loud person? Is it hard to see the blackboard? Tell your teachers or parents about any problem that is stopping you from paying attention and taking good notes.
Take good notes. Not sure how to take notes? Start by writing down facts that your teacher mentions or writes on the blackboard in class. Try your best to use good handwriting so that you can read your notes later. It’s also a good idea to keep your notes.
Plan before tests. It’s not wise of you to wait until Thursday night to study for Friday’s test. It also makes it hard to do your best. You’ll feel sorry for putting off things often. One of the best ways is to plan ahead.
Get a good night’s sleep. So the test is tomorrow and you’ve followed your study plan, but suddenly you can’t remember anything. Don’t worry. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you’ve given it. Try to get a good night’s sleep and you’ll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning.

Wang Zizhong, a 78-year-old farmer from Ciyu Village in Shandong, has spent 42 years greening mountains and protecting forests with his 55-year-old son Wang Tao. Their hard work shows the green development idea is deeply rooted in people’s hearts.
In 1983, Wang saw the dry, lifeless hills near his village. Serious soil and water loss made villagers’ lives hard, so he left his job as a village teacher to plant trees there. He moved his family into a mountain stone cave to work. They dug holes for seedlings (树苗) and carried water uphill for miles, as there were no roads. Each bucket of water could only feed a few trees, so they made countless trips every day. They lived simply on the mountain for over a month each season.
In 1997, Wang’s wife died of a heart attack on the mountain. Heartbroken but strong, he kept working alone. The family planted over 200,000 trees, turning brown hills into forests. Wang guarded the forests and planted more trees.
As Wang grew older, he passed the duty to his son, Wang Tao. Growing up alongside his father, Wang Tao gladly took the job. Today, he walks the same paths, caring for the forests and realizing his father’s dream.

五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
阅读短文,简略回答问题。
Now, life has changed a lot. It may be difficult to predict (预测) the future, but many people believe that we will live on Mars (火星) by the year 2100. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. Well, what problems will we need to solve before we prepare to go to Mars?
First of all, transport should be much better. At present, humans need to spend a few months going to Mars by spaceship. However, by 2100, spaceships can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get there!
Moreover, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food, water and air that we need. However, there is no answer for all the problems now.
There is also a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars attracts us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space there. We will have to wear special shoes to make ourselves heavier.
In some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today. Food will not be the same— meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable.
56.When will we probably live on Mars?
57.So far, how long does it take us from the earth to Mars by spaceship?
58.Why should we develop plants that can be grown on Mars?
59.What will we have to wear to keep ourselves heavier?
60.Do you think living on Mars would be better or worse than life on Earth now? Why?
【答案】56.By the year 2100. 57.A few months. 58.Because these plants will produce the food, water and air that we need. 59.Special shoes. 60.I think living on Mars would be worse than life on Earth now because food will not be the same and space travel will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable.(答案不唯一,合理即可)

Also, space travel will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable.” I think living on Mars would be worse than life on Earth now because food will not be the same and space travel will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable.(答案不唯一,合理即可)

Hi Alan,
