Pixar’s movie, Turning Red, is about puberty (青春期) . We often think about puberty and the hard things it brings. Our bodies and feelings change in ways that can feel out of our control. Turning Red shows the importance of being true to oneself during this time.
The film tells the story of Mei Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese student. She’s got confidence and enjoys playing with her friends. However, she often hides her true self in front of her protective and strict mother. This all changes when Mei reaches puberty. She starts uncontrollably turning into a big red panda whenever she gets excited. With the help of her friends, Mei learns to be her confident, true self and accept the red panda inside, her.
The story is based on the childhood experiences of Domee Shi, the movie director. Those behind Turning Red reminded Asian viewers of their childhood. At the same time, they also wanted to avoid harmful stereotypes (刻板印象) . For example, the filmmakers at first were concerned that a straight-A student could make the stereotype about Asian people deeper. However, they reflected on their own experiences. Growing up, they felt pressured to be A-students. They also had to deal with changes in their bodies and relationships. In the end, they decided to keep that in the story.
“We always deal with the writing of these characters from their goals,” says Shi. At the same time, Shi points out that Mei is attracted by this new world, her friends, and everything that the red panda represents. This sudden change in her appearance represents the mess of growing up and all the feelings inside of us that we’re taught at a young age to put away.
Instead of quieting the “red panda” and keeping it inside, Shi wanted teens to accept their “red panda”. Shi wanted teens not to be ashamed of their feelings. People of all ages can understand Turning Red. “While we may not be becoming the best version (版本) of ourselves, it’s our truer version.” she said. “It’s not about being the b you can be,” she explained. “It’s about being the best you as much as you can.”
4. What is Turning Red mainly about?
A. A special friendship. B. A mother’s reflection.
C. A teenager’s growth. D. A girl’s problem.
5. What can we know about the “red panda” in the passage?
A. It is a big and rude animal. B. It is Mei’s favourite animal.
C. It is not allowed to appear. D. It means a teenager’s true-life experiences.
6. Which may be Domee Shi’s idea about Turning Red according to the last paragraph?
A. Be brave to express oneself. B. Accept yourself as who you are.
C. Be open to others’ bad opinions. D. Deal with changes more calmly.
7. What is the passage?
A. A movie review. B. A news report.
C. A growth diary. D. A personal story.

In a world that often stresses physical appearance, it’s important not to concern ourselves with external (外部的) beauty or ugliness. True beauty and strength lie within.
Our focus on outward looks can lead to self-doubt and insecurity. For example, many people feel sad when they don’t match the perfect images (形象) presented in the media. They might fight for an unachievable standard (标准) of beauty, frequently comparing themselves to others. However, this often leaves us empty and dissatisfied. Inner strength, on the other hand, enables us to face life’s challenges with courage and resilience (恢复力) . It gives us the ability to bear hardships and come out of failures. A person like Malala Yousafzai, who fought for girls’ education despite facing great danger, shows that a strong and beautiful heart is more important than appearance.
A person with a strong and beautiful heart is kind, empathetic (有同理心的) , and generous. They focus on building meaningful relationships and having a positive influence on the world around them. They don’t let the opinions of others about their appearance affect them. Instead, they draw confidence from their values and character. Consider the volunteers in local charities. They give their time and love selflessly, not worried by their outward looks but rather the warmth they can bring. Even in daily life, simple acts like helping an elderly cross the street or comforting a sad friend show the beauty within.
Rather than spending a large amount of time and energy on perfecting our looks, we should focus on self-improvement and self-reflection. We can read, learn new skills, and take part in activities that nourish (滋养) our souls. By doing so, we will discover a beauty that is far more lasting and satisfying than any external charm. Let’s remember that it’s our inner selves that truly matter and have the power to change not only our lives but also the lives of those we touch.
8. Why does the author mention Malala Yousafzai in Paragraph 2?
A. As an example of inner beauty. B. As evidence of volunteer work.
C. To show the power of changing one’s life. D. To tell the importance of girls’ education.
9. What attitude does the writer have towards volunteers?
A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned. C. Admirable. D. Worried.
10. What does the writer agree with about beauty?
A. External beauty is more important than inner beauty.
B. External charm is as lasting and satisfying as inner beauty.
C. Self-improvement and self-reflection are not true beauty.
D. Activities nourishing our souls and changing others’ lives can be true beauty.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. True Beauty: The strength Hard to Achieve. B. From Within: The True Beauty of a Person.
C. Self-improvement: The Way to Nourish Our Soul. D. Difficult to Judge: The True Meaning of Inner Beauty.

“Happy New Year, everyone!” Jimmy’s dad put a plate of hot pancakes down on the center of the table. “It’s the first day of the year. What’s your resolution (决心要做的事) for the next twelve months?” Jimmy’s sister, Julia, spoke first. “I want to get an A in math. I’m going to practice my flashcards every day.” Julia poured syrup (糖浆) on her pancakes and began to eat.
“What about you, Jimmy? What’s your big goal for the year? ”
Jimmy thought about it. He had never made a New Year’s resolution before. “Does a resolution have to be about school? ” he asked. Dad smiled “No, Jimmy. A resolution can be about anything you want. It’s just a promise you make to yourself to try to do something in the future. ” Hearing that, Jimmy sat and thought. He was already good at math. He wasn't sure he wanted to make a promise about doing extra homework. He would like to be better at baseball and hit a home run in the summer. It would be hard, though, to practice baseball in the winter when there was snow on the ground.
“I'll have to think about it, ” Jimmy said. Then he went back to his room. He did his best thinking on his bed, but he had to step over all of his toy trucks and a few dirty socks to get there. He also had to move his comic books and stuffed animals off of his bed before he could sit down.
Jimmy looked around his room. It was pretty messy. He would have to clean it up before he could have friends over on Sunday. It usually took all day Saturday to clean up. That meant Jimmy couldn't play until he was finished.
“That’s it! ” Jimmy cried. “I’ll clean my room every Friday right after school. Dad will be happy, and I will be able to play all weekend. ” Jimmy smiled. He was happy that he found a resolution that would make his New Year much better than the past year.
Paragraph one:
The following Friday arrived, and Jimmy remembered his resolution.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph two:
From then on Jimmy never forgot the resolution, resulting in changes and benefits even beyond cleaning.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The following Friday arrived, and Jimmy remembered his resolution. As soon as he got home from school, he put his backpack down and started cleaning his room. He picked up his toys, organized his comic books, and even folded his clothes. It was hard work, but he felt proud when he finished. His dad noticed the clean room and smiled, “Great job, Jimmy!” That evening, Jimmy felt relaxed knowing he had the whole weekend free to play.
From then on Jimmy never forgot the resolution, resulting in changes and benefits even beyond cleaning. He found that keeping his room tidy helped him stay organized with his homework and school projects. His friends also started complimenting his neat room when they visited. Jimmy realized that small, consistent efforts could make a big difference. By sticking to his resolution, he not only improved his habits but also gained more time and energy for the things he loved.

C

” he asked. Dad smiled, “No, Jimmy.

Paragraph two:
From then on Jimmy never forgot the resolution, resulting in changes and benefits even beyond cleaning.
