British scientist Jane Goodall, known for her pioneering studies of chimpanzees (黑猩猩), passed away on Oct 1, 2025 at the age of 91.
Born in England in 1934, Goodall had a natural love for wild animals. In July 1960, aged 26, Goodall travelled to Tanzania and entered the little-known world of wild chimpanzees. Over the next 60 years, Goodall’s research changed how people understand human relationships with chimpanzees and introduced a new way to study wildlife.
Goodall’s research was pioneering because she lived closely with wild chimpanzee groups to learn about their social lives. She gave names to each chimp and formed close relationships with them, learning how similar they were to us. She saw that chimpanzees have complex (复杂的) social lives and different personalities, such as being shy or outgoing.
Two of Goodall’s most important findings came in 1960. That year, she saw a group of chimpanzees eating red meat, challenging the old idea that chimps only ate plants. She also saw something even more surprising—a male chimpanzee making and using tools. This finding changed the long-held idea that humans are the only animals that use tools. Since then, scientists have found facts of tool use in many parts of the animal world.
Besides her research, Goodall travelled the world to speak about the dangers chimpanzees are facing and the environmental challenges the Earth is facing, encouraging people to take action for all living things and the planet we share. “The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves,” she said.
29. What is Jane Goodall best known for?
A. Discovering a new type of chimpanzee. B. Studying chimpanzees for many years.
C. Being the first female zoologist in the world. D. Calling on people to take care of wildlife.
30. What does the underlined “those” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Wild animals. B. Environments. C. Humans. D. Scientists.

They say there are two types of people in the world—cat people and dog people. Take a look at the many posts written by dog and cat lovers on social media. Both groups try to prove why they are right. And both groups have good reasons.
Dog lovers say that “man’s best friend” is loyal (忠诚的), active and sweet. Cats, on the other hand, are usually described as elegant and proud “masters”, while their owners are more like their “servants (奴仆)”.
But this is about more than just what kind of pet someone likes better. It can also tell you more about them as a person.
A study from Carroll University in the United States shows that people choose pets depending on their own personality. For example, cats are seen as animals that like to be alone and don’t care much about what others say or do. “If you’re like that, you value that in an animal. It’s a better match for you,” said Denise Guastello, one of the psychologists who led the study.
Guastello’s study found that there are other personality differences between dog lovers and cat lovers. Dog lovers are usually more outgoing and lively, while cat lovers are quieter, more open-minded and sensitive.
This can be partly explained by the living habits and environments that pet owners and their pets have. Think about it: dog owners go outside to walk their dogs almost every day, but if you’re quiet and shy, you’ll probably stay at home with your cat.

C. Chimpanzees’ simple social lives. D. Chimpanzees’ ability of making and using tools.

It was very dark outside. I heated the food in the kitchen again, but my dad still didn’t come back from the forest. He worked as a forest ranger (护林员). In the morning, he told me he would go to check the new small trees and that I didn’t need to wait for him for dinner. But now, the wind was blowing hard and making a loud noise, like an animal. I stood at the door and called him, but he didn’t answer.
“I can’t wait any longer,” I thought. I took a flashlight from the corner and went out, my feet moving slowly and my eyes looking all around. The light showed me the way, but the shadows of the trees looked scary, like claws. I held the flashlight more tightly. I was worried that Dad might be lost or in trouble, so I walked into the forest slowly, each small sound making me stop for a second.
The wind blew harder, and the leaves made noise I was scared and kept looking back, but I saw nothing. The flashlight was dying. Just then, I heard someone shout, “Xiaoyu? Is that you?”
It was Dad! I shouted, “Dad! I’m here!” I saw the light move, and then I saw his orange ranger clothes. I ran to him and jumped into his arms. I could smell the pine on him, and I almost cried. “Son, why are you here?” Dad asked. Dad’s hands were cold, but he hugged (拥抱) me hard. “My phone stopped working. I was on my way home.” I put my face against his coat. Listening to his heartbeat, I felt safe again.
