三、阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,计40分)
(一)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出一个最佳答案。
A.
There are many interesting places in the world. Taos is one of them. But do you know what it is famous for? Taos is a small town in New Mexico, the US. Many people come here for a visit every year. They do not come to see the beautiful scenes (景色) or eat delicious food. They come to listen to a kind of sound: the Taos Hum.
The word “hum” means a low sound that never stops. It sounds really strange. Firstly, the Taos Hum that people hear is quite different. Some say it sounds like a little bee flying around you. Others think it sounds like a car moving in a faraway place. Secondly, nobody knows where the sound comes from. Joe Mullins, a scientist from the University of New Mexico, is one of the first people to do research on the hum. He put some instruments in places where people could hear the hum, but those instruments couldn’t “hear” any hum! Others who wanted to find the hum failed, too.
Many people try to explain that strange sound. Someone says it is a kind of noise made by insects. Someone believes it must come from some secret projects. Someone says there is an underground UFO base! But no one is sure which is right.
It might be interesting for visitors to listen to the hum, but it is not for people who live in the town. They have to hear the sound all the time. That is really a hard life.
21.Why do many people come to Taos for a visit every year?
A.To enjoy the beautiful scenes. B.To eat the delicious food.
C.To listen to the Taos Hum. D.To do some research.
22.Which question can best help readers know the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Why is the sound so strange? B.When can people hear the strange sound?
C.What’s the secret behind the sound? D.How does the sound influence people?
23.What do we know about the sound?
A.Only a few people can hear the sound.
B.Most people believe the sound comes from insects.
C.The sound never stops.
D.Joe Mullins has got the sound by using instruments.

Hello, everyone! Here comes this month’s Campus Brain Game. We’re going to talk about what you would like to invent. Let your imagination run wild and post your thoughts below.
—Andrew, Student Union President
Students have a lot of homework. They often go to bed late and wake up early for school. I’d like to invent a machine to help you get ready in the morning without waking you up. It would carefully pick you up, take you to the bathroom, and brush your teeth. It would get you dressed and set you down at the dining room table. Then, it would gently wake you for breakfast. You’d be ready for school on time while still getting a good night’s sleep!
—Michelle, from Grade 8
I’d invent a time machine that could take us to any day in history. We would finally be able to answer questions like “What killed all the dinosaurs?” Just think how different life would be if every question about history could be answered. We would know almost everything. And we could visit the past or the future to see how humanity has changed. Imagine visiting your ancestors! Imagine going to the future to tell people about life in the past! Just think about all that fun!
—Troy, from Grade 8
24.This article is probably taken from a ________.
A.school website B.contest invitation
C.school newspaper D.science fiction novel
25.What can we infer about Michelle’s invention?
A.It is designed to help students with homework.
B.It aims to solve students’ lack of sleep problem.
C.It can completely replace morning routines.
D.It is already being used in some schools.
26.Troy’s invention would allow people to ________.
①bring the dinosaurs back to life
②talk to people living in the future
③easily find answers to any question
④travel back to the time of the dinosaurs
A.①② B.③④ C.①③ D.②④

Around the world, governments are trying to get rid of plastic straws and bags. More and more businesses are using paper products instead of plastic ones. A lot of people think paper is better than plastic, but paper is also bad for the environment.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, can reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation.
Secondly, the production of paper items requires more energy and water. About 10 per cent more energy and four times as much water are used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say we can use recycled paper to save energy and water. It seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a brand-new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.
Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.
Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.
The most environmentally friendly solution is to avoid single-use items altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. By increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!
27.The underlined word “deforestation” in Paragraph 2 probably means “the act of ________”.
A.planting trees B.climbing trees C.protecting trees D.cutting down trees
28.Why does the author mention “recycled paper” in Paragraph 3?
A.To show it’s the best solution for environmental problems.
B.To prove that paper products are better than plastic ones.
C.To explain why paper production is harmful.
D.To argue against the idea that recycled paper can save energy and water.
29.What can be inferred about businesses that change to paper products?
A.They save money in the long run.
B.They care more about the environment than profits.
C.They may face higher costs.
D.They will attract more environmentally conscious customers.
30.Which of the following can best express the author’s attitude towards paper and plastic products?
A.Paper products are much better than plastic ones for the environment.
B.Plastic products are more harmful to the environment than paper ones.
C.Neither paper nor plastic products are good choices for the environment.
D.Both paper and plastic products are environmentally friendly in daily use.
D
Do you know that construction (建筑) is one of the biggest users of energy and one of the biggest polluters? According to AI Magazine, construction is responsible for using 38% of the world’s energy. The building part alone takes up almost 55% of final energy use and 33% of greenhouse gases. It’s also known that steel produces a lot of material waste in building construction.
Because of this big challenge, the future of sustainable (可持续的) construction may lie with AI. AI is able to study building efficiency (效率) performance by grouping data to find the best chances for sustainable material usage. With a tool like AI, the future of sustainable construction could progress much faster than in the past. Besides, AI helps architects (建筑师) work with new tools and sustainable materials to create better buildings and cities of the future. For example, construction 3D printing guided by AI can offer better choices for building materials to save money, and map out how construction materials could be recycled.
In a professional article, AI is praised as a tool for sustainable construction. “In recent years, AI has become a promising tool for construction. AI can examine a large number of data sets on weather conditions and help to make full use of building systems for energy efficiency, water protection and other goals.”
AI can be used to speed up the future of sustainable construction to set standards for the industry and make construction more efficient and affordable. Like any other computer, AI is a tool that is good at studying data sets, but for the moment it still requires smart and ethical (有道德的) human beings to lead its work. All of that has to be done with respect for humans, so it’s really up to us to make it work.

【答案】
例文
Dear Sam,
How’s it going? I'm about to graduate from junior high school. In the past three years, I’ve changed a lot—I’m more independent and outgoing now, and I’ve fallen in love with English. My English teacher helps me a lot, so I want to thank her most. The biggest problem for me is managing time well. For the future, I’ll work harder on my studies and try my best to enter a good senior high school. I’ll also learn to plan my time better.
Yours,
Li Hua
