Do you want to see magic? A bottle can “eat” an egg! Let’s try this fun experiment (实验).
Materials
• a peeled, hard-boiled egg • matches (火柴) • some small pieces of paper
• a glass bottle with a mouth smaller than the egg
Steps
Put some pieces of paper inside the bottle.
Light three matches together.
Put the burning matches into the bottle.
Quickly put the egg on the mouth of the bottle.
Happening
The egg begins to slowly move into the bottle.
Reasons
1. The burning matches’ flame (火焰) heats the air inside the bottle. The air expands (膨胀) and some gets out of the bottle.
2. Then, after the egg is put on the bottle’s mouth, the burning paper inside uses up the oxygen (氧气) and finally goes out.
3. After that, the air inside cools down and contracts (收缩). This creates a lower air pressure inside the bottle. Therefore, the higher air pressure outside pushes the egg into the bottle.
21. How many steps are there in this experiment?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
22. What finally makes the bottle “eat” the egg?
A. The burning paper outside the bottle.
B. The burning matches outside the bottle.
C. The different temperatures inside and outside the bottle.
D. The different air pressure inside and outside the bottle.
23. In which part of a magazine can you read this passage?
A. Food. B. History. C. Science. D. Art.
B
Many people in China’s southeastern coastal (沿海的) areas make a living by fishing. The sea has always been both a place to make a living and a place of danger for them. Day in and day out, they sail on the dangerous sea, facing strong winds and big waves, hoping to return safely with a big catch every time they set out. Thus, they pray (祈祷) to Mazu, a kind sea goddess (女神), for protection.
Mazu, known as the Goddess of the Sea in China and Southeast Asia, is believed to guard fishermen. Her story dates back to 960 A.D., when a baby girl named Lin Mo was born in a small fishing village on Meizhou Island, Fujian. Unlike others, she didn’t cry at birth, so she got the name “Mo”.
Lin Mo was special from a young age. She was a smart girl who enjoyed reading books about the stars and the sea. And she spent a lot of time watching the sky and the sea. By doing this, she learned to understand the sea very well and could know when storms came, helping fishermen stay safe. People called her “the weather girl” and “the fishermen’s helper”. It is said that she died saving fishermen in a terrible storm. To thank her, people built a temple and worshipped her as a goddess.
Even today, people in Meizhou Island and other places still celebrate Mazu’s birthday with various activities.
24. Where was Lin Mo born?
A. In Fujian. B. In Beijing. C. In Guangdong. D. In Hong Kong.
25. What does the underlined word “others” refer to?
A. Other islands. B. Other villages. C. Other fishermen. D. Other babies.
26. Why did people call Lin Mo “the weather girl”?
A. Because she loved reading books on rainy days.
B. Because she could tell when storms would come.
C. Because she helped fishermen repair their boats.
D. Because she was born on a sunny and warm day.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Life of Fishermen. B. Ways to Pray for Safe Trips.
C. The Sea Goddess Mazu. D. Celebrations of Mazu’s Birthday.

It all started after daddy waltzed off (扬长而去) and left us. Since then, mom, my little brother Toby and I had been living in our car. I pretended (假装) like nothing was wrong every morning, not caring about the mustard stain on my shirt and the fact that I’d washed my hair in a gas station bathroom.
Life at school wasn’t any easier, either. When Mr. White asked me to read my volcano (火山) report, everyone laughed—I’d made up all the facts because I had no Internet or library access. Then mom lost her cleaning job. It felt like every door around us was closing. That’s when I saw a sign that said: REWARD (报酬) $500.
“Five hundred dollars! Who in the world would pay five hundred dollars for that little old dog?” I thought to myself. So I asked mom that night, “Would five hundred dollars be enough money to get us a place to live?” “I suppose so.” Mom sighed. Thinking about that $500 reward, an idea came to me. If people would pay so much to get their dog back, I could do this. I’d “steal” a dog from a rich family. Then I’d wait for them to put up a reward sign. After that, I’d “find” the dog and get the reward
With the plan in my mind, I opened my notebook and wrote down the rules: give the dog food, water, and shelter; treat it well. I told myself I wasn’t really stealing—just “borrowing” a dog from someone rich enough not to miss it. And the money would get my family a real home.
However, the next day, as I searched the neighborhood for the right dog, a tiny voice in my head kept whispering (低语), softer than the wind but impossible to ignore (忽视): “Georgina, don’t do this. This wasn’t the way.”
—Adapted from Barbara O’Connor How to Steal a Dog
28. What is the right order of Georgina’s experience?
a. Her mom lost her job.
b. Her father left the family.
c. She made up the volcano report.
d. She made a plan to steal a dog.
A b-c-a-d. B. b-a-d-c. C. c-a-b-d. D. c-d-a-b.
29. What does the sentence “It felt like every door around us was closing.” in paragraph 2 suggest?
A. Georgina and her family failed to get out of the car because of the closed door.
B. Georgina and her family tried to ask others for help but they were all refused.
C. Georgina and her family decided to move to a much better neighborhood soon.
D. Georgina and her family were facing great difficulties in life and felt helpless.
30. How does Georgina’s feeling of hope change according to the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
31. In paragraph 5, what does the tiny voice in Georgina’s head show?
A. The difficulty to tell her classmates about her family’s situation.
B. The hard choice between the right values and her family’s need.
C. The possibility for little Toby to keep her whole plan as a secret.
D. The strong wish to leave school to help her mom make money.

①Behind every success lies a simple truth: people who often celebrate small wins achieve more. It’s not about holding big parties for every little good thing. It’s about having a winner’s way of thinking. Notice, praise and value these small victories, and use them to keep moving forward.
②Small wins hold the power to make a difference. When we realize every tiny bit of progress we make and value it, it will boost our motivation and bring us joy. As we see ourselves getting closer to our goals step by step, our brain will send a positive signal (信号) : “This is working!” It will keep pushing us to move forward without stopping. In fact, our choice to value or ignore small wins will bring about completely different results in our life.
③When we choose to value small wins and take the time to celebrate each one, we start a positive cycle (循环). A basketball player who raises his fist (拳头) after a successful shot isn’t just showing his excitement. At this moment, his brain thinks, “I did it!” He feels happy about winning. The good feeling stays with him, and next time he will be ready to try harder and fight for the ball. A student who rewards (奖励) himself with a cup of hot drink after finishing a study task is doing the same thing. Over time, our minds form a pattern (模式): ▲ .
④However, if we ignore small wins and stop celebrating them, we will break this positive cycle and focus on failures instead. This often leads to giving up. For example, if a person who wants to get fit only cares about losing 10 kilograms in a month, and never celebrates small things like exercising for 30 minutes, he will easily feel discouraged and even want to quit the fitness plan.
⑤So how can we make use of the power of small wins in daily life? First, break big goals into small tasks. Instead of planning to write a whole book, try to write 300 words a day and celebrate when you finish. Second, keep a notebook to record all your small wins. Third, reward yourself with something small, like a short walk or a piece of your favorite snack.
⑥Celebrate every small win, and you will make success a habit.
32. Which sentence uses “boost” with the same meaning and use as the underlined word?
boost /buːst/ v. ①使增长 ②偷窃 (非正式) n. ①帮助,激励 ②增长,提高
A. Your kind words are such a great boost to my self-confidence.
B. The new theme park will bring a boost to the local business.
C. The thief was caught boosting a phone from the department store.
D. This activity will greatly boost our interest in English learning.
33. Which of the following can be put in the ▲ ?
A. small rewards→small wins→small tasks
B. small wins→positive feelings→more efforts
C. big goals→unavoidable mistakes→bad feelings
D. more efforts→growing confidence→great success
34. What is the relationship between Paragraph② and Paragraph③?
A. Paragraph③ uses positive examples to explain the idea in Paragraph②.
B. Paragraph③ shows the bad results of following the idea in Paragraph②.
C. Paragraph③ tells us how to carry out the idea in Paragraph② as rules.
D. Paragraph③ talks about a new idea that has nothing to do with Paragraph②.
35. Which of the following shows the student uses the “small wins” idea?
A. Ben decides to finish his math workbook just in one day without having any rest.
B. Sam still feels sad about his bad test grades though he has done better than before.
C. Emily makes a 3-step plan for her project and rests for 10 minutes after each step.
D. Cindy asks her mom to buy her a big gift if she can finish her homework on time.

When was the last time you went for a walk? Was it a slow walk after dinner, or a quick walk on a busy morning? It’s known that walking is good for us, but how good? Research has shown that walking is a great form of exercise. In fact, how often you walk matters more than how long you walk each time. Walking is perfect for keeping physical health and keeping weight under control. It’s also a tested way of improving your mood and reducing stress. But now scientists have discovered some new advantages, especially for the brain. So, how does walking help the brain? We can get answers from how the three people describe their walking habits.
“I go for a walk alone every weekend, with my favorite music in my earphones. I always walk the same way every time, but each season brings something different. In autumn, I pick up the golden leaves. In spring, I smell the beautiful flowers. Such a chance to get closer to nature helps my brain work better like making me remember things more easily.”
—John Nichols (32 years old)
“I live in the city and I often walk home instead of taking the subway. There’s a shorter path nearby, but I always choose the longer one for the beautiful views along the way. Though I feel a little bit tired and people don’t understand me, I have to say that I feel my mind clearer after walking, especially when I’m busy with work.”
—Declan Smith (26 years old)
“London is a great place to walk. I usually walk from my home to where I work right through Regent’s Park, with its tall and wonderful trees. Along the way, I really enjoy sharing my daily happiness and troubles with some of my friends while walking together. Walking like this makes me think more clearly and I hardly forget important things now.”

Many teenagers can hardly stay away from their phones, especially on weekends. They spend hours watching videos, checking messages and looking through social media. Although this seems relaxing, too much screen time actually brings them heavy stress.
Ben, a 15-year-old teenager, felt very tired after a hard week of study. He tried to relax by using his phone, but soon he found himself spending six to seven hours a day on short videos, social media and games. After he got sick one day, a doctor suggested that he should put down his phone. Following the advice, Ben slowly began to feel better again.
Actually, what the doctor advised is called a digital detox (电子去毒). That means taking a planned break from screens. Too much screen time keeps the mind from resting. Teenagers take in too much information online and keep comparing themselves with others’ “perfect” lives. At the same time, long hours spent on screens stop the body from relaxing. This non-stop activity makes stress build up quickly.
However, some teenagers still think spending time on screens is the best way to relax. But studies by Harvard Medical School show a different result. It found that those who used screens for longer time produced less melatonin (褪黑素), the chemical that helps the body fall asleep. As a result, they rested worse.
Therefore, experts suggest that after a busy week of study, teenagers need to relax and regain energy. They are supposed to put down screens, focus on real-life activities and get enough sleep so that they can truly rest and feel ready for a new week.
Today, too much screen time may make teenagers stressed. To solve this problem, ______50______. That means taking planned breaks from screens. Too much screen time keeps both their ______51______ busy and stops them from truly resting. Some teenagers disagree but studies show that the less melatonin the body produces, ______52______. So, teenagers can truly relax by ______53______, focusing on real life activities and getting enough sleep.

Have you ever faced difficult choices in your daily life? I once experienced a really difficult one.
Xiao Ming and I are good friends. We play together and help each other. When we say “We are good friends, right?”, both of us feel warm. But one day in class, I was surprised to see him playing with his mobile phone.
Phones are not allowed in class. I thought over and over. “Should I report him?” I hesitated a lot worrying about our friendship. But I realized school rules matter, and it was my duty. Finally, I made a decision.
After class, I talked to Xiao Ming gently. He understood and promised not to do that again. I learned that being a monitor means balancing friendship and responsibility. The right choice helps both friends and the class.
