①I teach English in Russia. For some reason I really don’t like that class “Talk about your family”. The students say, “There are five people in my family. My mother, my father...” It sounds like that all families are the same.
②Our families are one and only. All have their stories, jokes, nicknames and so on. They’re the place where our personalities were made.
③We know our families so well that we even think they’re boring. Not a bit of it. Families are the most special things. If you dig (挖) enough into your own, you will get everything you want for a great book.
④My mother started making our family tree years ago, not expecting to get far. However, reading the old records (记录) and visiting libraries, she got back 300 years. She found some old stories. What happened to the big family farm? Where did the family fortune (财富) go in the 1870s?
⑤I’m the traveler in my family, and I love travelling. I always think I got it from a great-grandfather. My two favorite family heirlooms (传家宝) are a photo of him on a horse and a postcard from China. If you look at your family, you open a window on the past.
⑥When my mother, still putting the family tree together, asked me for a few names from my Russian wife’s family, my wife got on the phone to check a name or two. But she was still talking an hour later. So you can see that start some people talking about their family stories and they might never stop.
⑦To go back to that English class, let’s look at some interesting ways to talk about families. English is rich in idioms (习语) to talk about family life. The black sheep of the family is someone who brings family trouble. If you’re true to your family, you can say “blood (血) is thicker than water”. “Who wears the trousers in your family?” means “Who’s the head of your family?”. And stories behind them are what I want to hear.

( ) 3.Jerry’s mother decides almost everything in the family, so ________ .
A.she is the black sheep of the family B.her blood is thicker than water
C.she wears the trousers in the family D.she is the breadwinner of the family
( ) 4.If we put the passage into four parts, which one is the best?
A.①②/③/④⑤⑥/⑦ B.①/②③/④⑤/⑥⑦ C.①/②③/④⑤⑥/⑦ D.①②③/④⑤/⑥/⑦
C
People read books less often these days. With the invention of the TV, computer games, the Internet and mobile phones, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular activity. However, I believe that books are an important part of our lives.
Books offer a great wealth of learning and are at a cheaper price than taking a course (课程). Books can make people cleverer, because heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people are.
Everything requires (要求) reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the notes on a medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone may not understand them and become very sick. Even something as simple as walking or driving through the city could become very dangerous without enough reading. Sometimes you must be able to understand what is written and explain the meaning.
Some people don’t like reading books. They say that reading is a waste of time and we can do better things with our time. Even if we don’t read books, we still read every day. And reading books can strengthen our abilities (能力). Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our free time.
With a book, you can travel anywhere you want, do anything you want, and talk to anyone you want. Reading is very important in our lives, no matter how old you are. So I think people should read books.

四、七选五(共5小题;每题2分,满分10分)
Many people say that their memory (记忆力) is bad, especially as they get older. So how can we improve our memory? Here are some tips for you.
1
We all remember the things we are interested in, and always forget the ones that bore us. This explains the reason why schoolboys remember football results easily but struggle (挣扎) with dates from their history lessons!
Repeat things in groups.
2 The following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But look at them in “groups” repeatedly, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1931 8483.
3
To remember long lists, try inventing a story which includes all the things you want to remember. In the test, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this way. When they were tested later, they could remember about 90% of them. 4
Take physical exercise.
Physical exercise is also important for your memory, because it increases your heart rate (心率), and that makes your memory work better. 5 As we know, too much pressure is very bad for the memory.
A.Exercise also lowers pressure.
B.Have a positive interest in what you want to remember.
C.Take an interest.
D.Grouping numbers may help you to remember things for a short time.
E.The test result was really amazing!
F.Doing exercise is good for our health.
G.Invent a story.

On November 16, 2024, Nigel Richards once again won a world Scrabble championship (冠军). That may not seem 1 (surprise), but this Scrabble contest was in Spanish—a language Mr Richards doesn't even speak. Many people believe he is the 2 (good) Scrabble player ever.
Mr Richards didn't begin playing Scrabble 3 he was 28. His mother says she taught him to play Scrabble because she thought she would be able to beat him. She said that he was never very good at 4 (spell) and didn't do well in his English classes.
But his other skills quickly allowed him to become 5 Scrabble champ. He doesn't need to know the meaning of the words, just what words are allowed and 6 to spell them.
Even so, it's hard work. These dictionaries have hundreds of 7 (thousand) of words. Mr Richards started memorizing (记忆) Spanish words about a year ago. Mr Richards's hard work paid off. In the tournament in Granada, he was the 8 (win) of 23 games out of the 24 games he played. He defeated Benjamin Olaizola of Argentina (who does speak Spanish). Despite his 9 (succeed), Mr Richards is rather shy. He doesn't talk to reporters, and he doesn't talk about his Scrabble playing methods. He lets his results speak for 10 (them).

In today's world, technology is changing our lives in many ways. One of the coolest new technologies is DeepSeek. DeepSeek is an AI-related service. It can answer various questions, just like having a helper. It's also a super-useful tool that can help middle school students a lot.
DeepSeek is an AI-powered learning helper. It can do many amazing things. For example, when you are reading an English storybook and come across a new word like "mysterious", you can type it into DeepSeek. It will not only tell you the meaning of the word, which is "神秘的" in Chinese, but also show you how to use it in sentences. What's more, DeepSeek can also answer your questions according to your different questioning methods.
If you are not good at grammar, DeepSeek is also your good friend. Maybe you can't tell the difference between "used to do" and "be used to doing". Just ask DeepSeek! "He is used to playing football after school." means it has become his habit to play football after school now.

It will find spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes, and even give you some advice on how to make your writing better. It might suggest adding more interesting details or changing some boring words.
However, we should remember not to depend on DeepSeek too much. It's just a tool to help us. We still need to think by ourselves and try to solve problems on our own.
