People there couldn’t grow food and they lost their homes because of the floods. Seeing so many homeless people, Shun, the leader of the tribe (部落), decided to kill the dragons for them and then he left home. Shun had two wives. They were called the “Madames Xiang”. They waited for their husband day and night. Years later, there was still no news of Shun, so they decided to look for him. When they finally came to Mount Jiuyi, they got to know that Shun died after he killed the dragons. They were so sad that they cried for nine days in front of Shun’s tomb (坟墓). Whenever a panda is born or falls ill, the whole world seems to take notice. Why? Yes, they are incredibly cute. But the bigger reason is that there are so few of them left. In the 1980s, their population dropped to just about 1,110 worldwide. But here is some good news: the number of giant pandas is growing. Today, there are about 2,000 pandas living in the wild in China. How has China achieved this? Let’s take a look. Eating Well Although pandas sometimes eat small animals or fish, bamboo is their favorite food. And they are big eaters! An adult panda needs 10 to 38 kilograms of bamboo every day. China set up its first panda reserve (保护区) more than 50 years ago. Now there are many more reserves. People plant plenty of bamboo there to make sure pandas have enough fresh food. Gentle Care Baby pandas are only about 15 cm long-about the size of a pencil! They are born blind and open their eyes only six to eight weeks after birth. Therefore, researchers carefully look after them in special centers. When the pandas are big and strong enough, researchers release (释放) them into the wild. But they try not to disturb (打扰) the lives of wild pandas. Sometimes, when getting close to wild pandas, researchers even wear panda costumes (扮演服). Going Global China has also welcomed international organizations to help study and protect pandas. The most famous visit was from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 1979. Since the WWF’s logo (标志) is a panda, this has helped make pandas famous around the world. China also sends pandas to other countries as special “ambassadors (大使).” The fees that foreign zoos pay also support panda conservation (保护) work in China. 8. About how many giant pandas were living in the wild in China in the 1980s? A. About 2,000. B. About 1,110. C. About 1,979. D. About 1,980. 9. What is the main food of giant pandas? A. Small animals. B. Fish. C. Bamboo. D. Fruits and leaves. 10. Why do researchers sometimes wear panda costumes when getting close to wild pandas? A. To make the pandas laugh. B. To keep themselves warm. C. To avoid disturbing the pandas’ natural life. D. To attract more tourists. 11. What is the main purpose of this article? A. To explain why pandas are cute. B. To describe how China feeds pandas. C. To encourage people to visit panda reserves. D. To introduce efforts China has made to protect and increase the panda population. D This is the story of an old fisherman named Santiago. He is old, thin, and wrinkled, but his eyes are still bright and cheerful, like the color of the sea. However, he has gone eighty-four days without catching a single fish. People say he is unlucky. Even the young boy, Manolin, who used to fish with him, has been sent to work on another boat by his parents. Still, the boy loves the old man. He visits him every day, brings him food, and helps him carry his fishing gear. Despite his long run of bad luck, Santiago remains hopeful. Every morning, he wakes up before sunrise and goes out to sea alone. He thinks of the sea as a woman, sometimes kind and sometimes cruel. On the eighty-fifth day, he sails his small boat far out into the deep ocean. His luck changes. He hooks a large marlin (马林鱼), a fish longer than his boat! This begins a long and exhausting (令人筋疲力尽的) fight. For two days and two nights, the huge fish pulls the boat. The old man is tired, hungry, and his hands are cut and hurt, but he never gives up. He respects the fish’s strength and courage. Finally, he succeeds in harpooning (用鱼叉刺) the great marlin and ties it to the side of his boat. His victory is short-lived. On the journey home, sharks smell the blood of the dead marlin. The first to attack is a big Mako shark (灰鳍鲨). It is a perfect killing machine with sharp teeth. The old man fights bravely with his harpoon, then a knife, then a club (棍棒). He kills several sharks, but they keep coming. By the time he reaches the shore, the sharks have eaten almost all of the marlin. Only its giant skeleton (骨架) remains. The other fishermen are amazed by the size of the skeleton. The old man is exhausted and sad, but he is not defeated. He has proven his strength and spirit. The boy, seeing the old man safe, cries and promises to fish with him again. The story ends with the old man dreaming of the lions he saw on the beaches of Africa when he was young—a symbol of his enduring strength and dignity (尊严). 12. At the beginning, how long had Santiago gone without catching a fish? A. Forty-four days. B. Fifty-eight days. C. Eighty-four days. D. Eighty-five days. 13. Why does the author mention that Santiago dreams of lions at the end? A. To show Santiago still wishes to travel to Africa. B. To symbolize the strength and dignity that Santiago still has inside. C. To suggest that Santiago is becoming confused (困惑) in his old age. D. To explain why he became a fisherman. 14. Which is the correct order of these events? ① Sharks attack the marlin. ② Santiago hooks (用鱼钩钓) a large marlin. ③ Santiago returns with only the marlin’s skeleton. ④ Santiago harpoons the marlin. A. ②-④-①-③ B. ④-②-①-③ C. ①-②-④-③ D. ②-①-④-③ 15. What is the main lesson or theme of this story? A. Fishing is a very dangerous job. B. It is important to have a young helper. C. Minor Cold usually comes on January 5th or 6th. During this time, cold north winds blow, and white frost (白霜) is often seen on the ground and roofs. In the north, thin ice may form on rivers and lakes. In southern China, the air is damp (潮湿的) and the cold feels like it goes right into your bones. People eat warm and nourishing (有营养的) foods.
