After a difficult academic year, we all deserve a wonderful summer holiday, a time for relaxation and celebration. Of course, a big part of any celebration involves food. Many of my holidays, birthdays, days out and good memories are defined by the amazing food that was involved. The sunny weather and long days bring with it a whole selection of meals, recipes and snacks to be enjoyed.
The first thing that summer calls for is a barbecue. Although I don’t have a barbecue at home, a portable barbecue will do the trick and this means that you can enjoy a slightly charred burger wherever you are. Picnics are also a must for summer and I often find they are the most fun when treated like a potluck, with each person bringing along their personal favourites. Cocktail sausages and mini scotch eggs are always my guilty pleasures. As someone from the Suffolk coast, fish and chips are essential. It truly feels like summer when I sit on the beach with chips wrapped in paper on my lap. The coast is the best place to get a seafood treat with fish being caught fresh daily. Besides, you can finish your day with a walk along the beach. Finally, we can’t forget the drinks. Pimms in the sun, well balanced by lemonade and summer fruits, is always delicious. And I find that nothing reminds me more of post-exam celebrations than a pint in a beer garden.
The thing about summer food is that it often becomes food associated with summer memories. Picnics, barbecues, and fish and chips on the beach are more than just delicious meals — they are a way to socialise and have fun with friends and family. Part of the fun comes from lazing in the sun afterwards, swimming in the sea, and playing heartily, which is why our food memories are so powerful.
4. According to the author, what makes a picnic most enjoyable?
A. Gathering with friends. B. Sharing delicious foods.
C. Enjoying seafood treats. D. Introducing different recipes.
5. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “portable” in paragraph 2?
A. Multifunctional. B. Automatic.
C. Easy to carry. D. Simple to operate.
6. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Foods: the trick for a celebration
B. My celebration of summer holidays
C. My summer memories on the beach
D. A taste of sun: foods for my summer
7. In which part of a newspaper can you most probably read the text?
A. Travel and holiday. B. Cuisine and life.
C. Sports and fitness. D. Education and schooling.

Increasing your productivity is how ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool from OpenAI, attracts its users. However, despite hopes that the technology will improve efficiency at work, not everyone is on board.
According to a report by the World Economic Forum published in April, 59 percent of men aged 18 to 65 around the world use generative AI at least once a week, compared to 51 percent of women. The gender gap is even wider among younger people: 71 percent of men aged 18 to 24 use generative AI weekly, compared with 59 percent of women.
Why are women less open to AI than men? According to AI expert Jodie Cook, this gap reflects the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). “STEM fields have traditionally been led by males. The current pattern in the use of AI tools appears to mirror this difference.” Cook told the BBC.
Outside this larger social context, certain patterns in female thinking might also play a role. In a survey of 486 students, divided by academic performance, researchers found that high-performing female students were more likely to use ChatGPT only when it had been allowed by their professor. “It’s the ‘good girl’ thing. It’s this idea that I have to go through this pain, I have to do it on my own, and I shouldn’t cheat or take shortcuts,” Siri Isaksson, a researcher of the study, explained to The Economist.
Women’s reluctance may also come from fears about how others view their abilities. British psychologist Lee Chambers suggests that the fear of being seen as less capable could add to this way of thinking. “There could be this feeling that if people know that you, as a woman, use AI, it’s suggesting that you might not be as qualified as you are,” he explained.
For some experts, women’s reluctance to use AI is troubling, as it could lead to technology being designed more for men by the time AI becomes a fully accepted part of society. Others, however, are less alarmed. Danielle Li, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, points out that AI may right now act more as a “digital toy”, and high-achieving women may simply be better at avoiding distraction.
8. Why does the author list these numbers in Paragraph 2?
A. To show women are less open to AI.
B. To explain women are naturally interested in technology.
C. To prove different learning methods between men and women.
D. To introduce men are more creative with the aid of AI tools.
9. What’s the attitude of high-performing female students toward ChatGPT?
A. They distrust it greatly. B. They consider it a waste of time.
C. They prefer using it with permission. D. They believe it may develop laziness.
10. What’s reason for women reluctant to use AI, according to Lee Chambers?
A. They find AI annoying.
B. They lack confidence in their tech skills.
C. They fear being seen as overly ambitious.
D. They worry about being regarded less capable.
11. What’s the attitude of the author towards women’s reluctance to use AI?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Concerned.
D
I sometimes feel I’m in a daily struggle not to become a shallower version of myself. The driver of shallowization is technology, the way it reduces attention span, fills the day with unnecessary distractions (分散注意). So I’m trying to take countermeasures. I flee to the arts.
I’m looking for those experiences we all have as kids: becoming so enveloped by an adventure story that you refuse to put it down to go to dinner; getting so entirely swept up in some piece of music that you feel primeval (原始的) passions thumping within you; encountering a painting so beautiful it feels like you’ve walked right into its alternative world.
The normal thing to say about such experiences is that you’ve lost yourself in a book or a song — lost track of space and time. But it is more accurate to say that a piece of art has quieted the self-conscious ego voice that is normally chattering away within. A piece of art has served as a gateway to a deeper realm of the mind. It has opened up that hidden, semiconscious kingdom within us from which emotions emerge, where our moral sentiments (情绪) are found.
The arts work on us at that deep level, the level that really matters. You give me somebody who disagrees with me on every issue, but who has a good heart — who has the ability to show sympathy with others, participate in their woes, longing and dreams — well, I want to stay with that person all day. You give me a person who agrees with me on every particular, but who has a cold, resentful heart — well, I want nothing to do with him or her.
Artists generally don’t set out to improve other people; they just want to create a perfect expression of their experience. But their art has the potential to humanize the beholder.
12. Why does the author turn to the arts?
A. To escape from daily chaos. B. To imitate the lifestyles of artists.
C. To avoid shallowization from technology. D. To seek inner peace through dialogues.
13. According to the text, how does art affect our inner world?
A. By enabling us to keep sustainable focus.
B. By expanding keen insights into the world.
C. By enhancing information processing ability.
D. By allowing access to deep levels of the mind.
14. What is the value of engaging with the arts according to paragraph 4?
A. Developing genuine passions for art. B. Acquiring the ability to understand others.
C. Learning the art appreciation techniques. D. Strengthening social links between people.
15. What will be talked about after the last paragraph?
A. The strategies for promoting ourselves. B. The perspectives on conveying true beauty.
C. The approaches to humanizing artworks. D. The principles of maintaining motivations.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
If you’ve found yourself thinking, “Why don’t I feel anything?” — you’re not alone. Emotional numbness (麻木) is a common experience. It often comes across as going through the motions of life without truly connecting to it.___16___.
This sense of disconnection is the mind’s way of protecting itself. Emotional numbness can develop as a response to overwhelm, burnout, or unprocessed emotions.___17___. It doesn’t always appear as sadness but can show up as emotional flatness or internal emptiness. In others,it can accompany anxiety, where the body stays in an extended state of hyperarousal (反应过度), leading to shutdown or withdrawal.
___18___. This is especially true when someone is focused on “getting through” rather than feeling. Over time, avoiding difficult emotions can become automatic, making it harder to reconnect with the full range of emotional experience.
Sometimes, people notice emotional changes while adjusting to new medications. Certain treatments may temporarily dampen emotional intensity as they work to restore balance.___19___. In fact, for many people, it plays a vital role in improving the quality of life. If you ever feel emotionally flat or distant while on medication, it’s worth having a conversation with your provider to find the right balance for your mind and body.
The important thing to remember is that emotional numbness is not a flaw. It’s a signal — your body and brain telling you they need rest, reflection, or support.___20___, and it begins with small steps: slowing down, tuning into your body, giving yourself permission to feel, and allowing space for both joy and pain.
A. For some, it may be part of depression
B. This doesn’t mean medication is harmful
C. Reconnecting with your emotions is possible
D. These are daily routines that can be easily achieved
E. You might not feel fully engaged though you’re present
F. Emotional numbness can also occur during survival mode
G. In certain cases, emotions can get in the way of self-protection

I had booked the flights in somewhat of a hurry with just a carry-on bag, thinking 7 kgs was enough for a 3-day trip to Taupo. I thought I’d given myself enough time to get to the airport, however, as often was the case, I was running late and had to pack my bag with little time left. Confused about what to carry, I stuffed all the clothes in my little bag, taking no notice of the weight.
Thirty minutes before the flight, I was waiting at my terminal (航站楼) in the airport and couldn’t stop smiling. I was too excited to go on a much-needed trip. A little while later, I heard an announcement “Passengers flying to Taupo on Flight NZ5091 are requested to weigh your cabin luggage and collect your tag”. I stood in the line waiting for my turn, clueless about how much my bag would weigh, deep inside hoping not over the weight limit.
When it was my turn, I placed my bag on the weighing scale and whoaaaa!! It was 9.4 kgs. I asked the flight attendant if I could buy $20 extra luggage allowance (行李费) as shown on the app but I was too late for it. Instead, I was asked to pay an additional fee of $65. I either had to pay or leave something away to bring it down to 7 kgs. I asked the attendant whether they would give my stuff back to me if I returned 3 days later and surprisingly I was told I wouldn’t get it back.
To me, a bad luggage experience had the power to completely sour a trip. With no other alternatives, I decided to give up some of my stuff. Unsettled, annoyed, disappointed! As I started removing the items, I saw a lady approaching me. It looked like she had heard the whole thing. She sat down next to me. “Are you OK? I should be able to help you.” She said.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I looked up, surprised, and saw her pointing at her bag.

On the other hand, voice assistant helps us control lights, play music, and check weather with simple voice commands, making life easier. However, everything has two sides. Some people are concerned that AI will replace the jobs of humans, which leads to unemployment. Moreover, relying too much on AI makes us become lazier and weakens our problem-solving abilities.
In my view, AI is just a tool. Its value depends on how we use it. I firmly believe that AI will lead us to a better future. Let’s embrace AI and make good use of it.
