Blumberg, a senior lecturer in the math department at University of Houston Downtown, sold her mother’s place in favor of something smaller. While packing up, she found her late mother’s three knit sweaters in various stages of construction. She knew exactly who they were intended for: the first, a blue and white garment, was for her mother; the second, all purple, was for Blumberg; and the third was for Blumberg’s daughter.
She brought them to a local knitting store to be finished. The employees there, in turn, put her in contact with another shop, where a worker asked her, “Have you ever heard of Loose Ends?” Blumberg hadn’t. She would learn Loose Ends is a nonprofit organization that matches people who have unfinished work from loved ones, who have either passed away or become disabled, with crafters in their area who can finish quilting, knitting and other projects, all at no charge. It has 30,000 volunteer “finishers” who have taken over about 3,500 projects since its launch.
Blumberg contacted Loose Ends, and they linked her up with a nearby finisher, Anna, to take over her mother’s work. “All I could do when I met Anna was give her a big hug,” Blumberg said, tearing up. “It’s unbelievable how special this project is. Otherwise, I would have spent a fortune to get this done.”
Anna spent months on the sweaters, and said she’s happy to have a part in what she saw as a beautiful story that could bind generations. The project reminded her of her own family: her grandmother was a knitter as well, until arthritis made it hard to complete those delicate knitting movements. “It’s making sure people have these physical objects that you can hug when you’re missing a person. That’s a big deal,” said she.
41. How were her mother’s knit sweaters when Blumberg found them?
A. Uncleaned. B. Unfinished.
C. Undecorated. D. Uncoloured.
42. What do we know about Loose Ends?
A. It comforts those who lost loved ones.
B. It repairs valued personal possessions.
C. It matches crafters with those in need.
D. It makes individually tailored sweaters.
43. What can be inferred from what Blumberg said?
A. She regretted asking volunteers for help.
B. She expected to learn more from Anna.
C. She disliked the organization’s project.
D. She’s grateful for Anna’s generous help.
44. What does the underlined word “bind” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Separate B. Connect C. Break D. Replace
45. Which one can be the best title for the text?
A. A Tight-Knit Community B. The Knitting Skills
C. An Enthusiastic Volunteer D. The Knit Sweaters

It might surprise you to learn that dogs are playing an increasingly important role as conservationists. For centuries, they have been known as man’s best friends. Now, their unique abilities are being made use of to help protect some of the world’s most threatened species.
Quick and loyal, dogs possess many qualities that make them ideal for fieldwork, but it’s their extraordinary sense of smell that makes them invaluable for conservation work. With around 220 million olfactory receptors (嗅觉受体) compared to just 5 million in humans, dogs can detect scents (气味) and analyze them with astonishing accuracy, devoting 40 times more of their brain to scent analysis than we do. This ability allows them to find targets that are invisible to human eyes or hidden deep in nature.
Thanks to this incredible ability, some dogs are now being trained to save at-risk animals by sniffing (嗅) out their droppings. At the University of Washington’s Conservation Canines facility,20 specially trained dogs have successfully tracked killer whale droppings, which only float briefly on the ocean’s surface. Analyzing these samples enables scientists to monitor the health of killer whale populations, which are under significant stress from food shortages, pollution, and boat traffic. Without the dogs’ help, collecting these samples would be extremely difficult and time-consuming.
Beyond tracking animal droppings, conservation dogs are also trained for live animal detection, further showcasing their abilities. They can locate rare species in their natural habitats, even when the animals are hiding or have a low population density. Additionally, they are now used to tackle the non-native species that threaten the survival of the local wildlife. Dogs also take on other important roles. For example, at Kenya’s Mombasa port, dogs sniff out illegal wildlife products such as rhino horns and ivory. Across Africa, they work on the frontlines against illegal hunting, serving as a powerful security force enhancer that helps reduce poaching activities.
While dogs may not be the ultimate solution to every conservation challenge, their incomparable abilities make them invaluable companions in the fight to protect our planet’s biodiversity. As scientists continue to train and work with these amazing animals, their contribution to conservation will only grow.
46. Why does the author mention the numbers of olfactory receptors in Paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the superiority of dogs’ sense of smell.
B. To show that humans have a poor sense of smell.
C. To explain why dogs are loyal to humans.
D. To compare the brain structure of dogs and humans.
47. How do dogs help protect killer whales indirectly?
A. By fighting against illegal hunting of killer whales.
B. By tracking their droppings for scientists to analyze.
C. By driving away boats that disturb killer whales.
D. By finding food sources for killer whales.
48. What is the function of the example in Paragraph 4?
A. To prove that dogs can detect live rare species. B. To show that non-native species are a great threat.
C. To illustrate another role of conservation dogs. D. To explain how dogs work in different countries.
49. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Conservation work is becoming more and more important.
B. Dogs are man’s best friends in daily life.
C. Scientists are training dogs to do various jobs.
D. Dogs are making great contributions to conservation.
50. What can we infer about the author’s view on dogs’ role in conservation?
A. Dogs are the most important part of conservation work.
B. Dogs’ contribution to conservation is limited.
C. Dogs can solve all conservation challenges.
D. Dogs’ abilities in conservation are irreplaceable.

Maybe you’ve dreamed of rising quickly like a bird since childhood; or you’ve recently started revisiting a particular place or time while asleep. If so, you are not alone. It seems like the same dreams keep following us.
Recurring (反复发生) dreams are a common phenomenon. Sometimes they’ re nearly identical each time they occur, but they may also have recurring themes, locations or characters set against different backgrounds. This change sets them apart from nightmares (梦魇) caused by PTSD, a psychological condition in which people relive specific memories from their waking life with far less variation while asleep.
Recent studies have justified the long-held idea that recurring dreams are often — but not always — bad ones. The reasons why we might have a greater tendency for negative dreams are not fully understood, but Michael Schredl,a researcher from Germany, says dreams typically overstate something in our waking life — even a small feeling or minor situation we feel powerless to change. “In the dream, it becomes a much bigger emotion, although the connection isn’t always straightforward,” he explains.
Psychology and neuroscience offer additional clues. For example, we are subject to what’s known as negativity prejudice: a tendency to focus more upon unpleasant thoughts, emotions or social interactions than on positive ones. This behavior is rooted in our subconscious (潜意识) need to resolve negative situations that threaten our survival. Negativity bias may be worsened in sleep because our dreaming brain. holds back the areas associated with logic and activates parts associated with emotion.
Nirit Soffer-Dudek, a consciousness researcher at Ben-Gurion University in Israel, recommends developing good “sleep hygiene (卫生)”. By setting a consistent sleep schedule, limiting screen use and avoiding caffeine or alcohol before bed, “you’re less likely to fall asleep while still in a heightened emotional state,” she says. “The best advice I can give is to try to guarantee strong boundaries between your waking time and sleep to avoid bringing anxiety into your dreams.”
51. How do recurring dreams differ from PTSD-related nightmares?
A. Recurring dreams have more variation.
B. Recurring dreams are less vivid.
C. PTSD-related nightmares have more themes.
D. PTSD-related nightmares are less frequent.
52. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The significance of subconscious behavior.
B. The limitation of emotional activation.
C. The possible reason for negative dreams.
D. The solution to worsened sleep.
53. What does Nirit suggest people do?
A. Stop the use of electronic devices.
B Extend waking-and-sleeping boundaries.
C. Keep a regular sleep routine.
D. Consume some alcohol before bed.
54. Which of the following statements about negativity prejudice is true?
A. It only appears when people are asleep.
B. It is a positive tendency in human psychology.
C. It is related to people’s subconscious need for survival.
D. It makes people focus more on positive social interactions.
55. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To describe the different types of recurring dreams.
B. To explain why recurring dreams are often negative and how to deal with it.
C. To prove that PTSD is the main cause of recurring nightmares.
D. To introduce the latest research on the relationship between sleep and dreams.

Tara grew up in a remote mountain region of Idaho, where her family led an unconventional lifestyle, avoiding modern society. Formal education was disapproved of in her family — her parents believed that school would corrupt (破坏) her natural instincts. Tara spent her childhood working alongside her parents: helping her father in his scrapyard (废料场) to collect and sort metal. Books were rare in their home, and Tara’s learning was limited to what her parents chose to teach her, mostly practical skills for survival.
As Tara grew older, she accidentally found some old textbooks left by hikers and began to read them secretly. Her curiosity about the outside world and formal education deepened. At the age of 16, she decided to change her life and pursue formal learning,a decision that created tension within her family.
College life was not easy. With no formal schooling background, she had to make up for years of missed education. It was a journey filled with obstacles and moments of self-doubt. The idea of sitting in a college classroom, surrounded by students who talked about things she had never heard of, seemed almost impossible at first. Yet, she persevered, driven by a strong desire to understand the world and grow as a person.
Entering college, Tara faced not only academic challenges but deep-seated fears from her upbringing. But Tara was lucky to find teachers who recognized her potential. They guided her patiently, helped her make up for her knowledge gaps, and encouraged her to believe in herself. She started to see herself as more than her past — she was a capable learner who could achieve great things. Over time, Tara’s endurance paid off.
Looking back, Tara realized her journey was not just about gaining knowledge — it was about facing challenges bravely, breaking free from limitations, and having the courage to redefine who she really was.

【答案】41. B 42. C 43. D 44. B 45. A

For example we are subject to what’s known as negativity prejudice: a tendency to focus more upon unpleasant thoughts, emotions or social interactions than on positive ones.
B. Extend waking-and-sleeping boundaries.

阅读表达
