Here are a few tips that we hope will help you present yourself as the outstanding person you no
doubt are.
Academic Ability
Academic strength is our first consideration in evaluating any candidate. The single most important
document in your application is your high school report, which tells us a great deal about your academic
drive and performance over time.We look for students who have taken a broad range of challenging
courses in high school and have done well.
No Minimum Scores
Admission officers refer to standardized test scores and school reports together.Officers evaluate
scores within each student's unique context. There are no minimum scores for standardized tests, and
高二英语第2页(共8页)
successful candidates present a range of scores.Strong scores are not a replacement for a weak report,
and weaker scores do not disqualify an applicant. The middle 80%of ACT and SAT scores of first-year
students who signed up fall 2025 were as follows:
ACT Composite:31-36
SAT-Evidence-Based Reading and Writing:680-790
SAT-Math:690-800
Bringing Your Application to Life
The Yale application tries to get at the personal side of the applicant through the use of several
short essays whose range is broad enough to suit most writers. We encourage you to take the writing of
the essays seriously and to write openly and honestly about activities, interests,or experiences that
have been meaningful to you. What is most important is that you write in your own voice. If an essay
doesn't sound like the person who writes it,it cannot serve very well as a personal statement.
21.What document matters most in a student's application?
A.High school report.
B.Standardized test scores.
C.Short application essays.
D.A list of challenging courses.
22.What can we know about standardized test scores?
A.High scores can make up for a weak school report.
B.They are assessed ignoring students'background.
C.Applicants with lower scores fail to be admitted.
D.They are considered with high school reports.
23.What is the key requirement for the short essays?
A.Focusing mainly on academic achievements.
B.Following a fixed structure required by officers.
C.Covering as many interests and activities as possible
D.Displaying the applicants'true self in their own way.

In early 2023,21-year-old college student Taylor MacMahon was trapped in serious anxiety and
depression that even caused physical health problems.Desperate for relief, she visited a doctor. The
result一chronic anxiety一hardly astonished her,but the prescribed(处方的)treatment left her
astonished:"Go to touch grass."The doctor urged her to pause worries, step outside, take off her
shoes, and press her feet firmly into the grass, insisting it would be effective.
Confused yet out of options,MacMahon followed the advice-and felt her anxiety fade almost
instantly."I calmed down right away,"she recalled.When a professor recommended a summer course
titled Nature Immersion and Human Well-Being,she seized the chance.During a week at Colorado
State University's mountain campus, she threw herself into nature:hiking through tracks, swimming in
clear lakes,climbing old trees,and sharing stories around a campfire."That week was life-changing,"
she said."I didn't just learn nature heals-I understood how and why it works, like magic.
MacMahon's experience mirrors a trend in medicine:"nature prescriptions".Dr.Scott Kaiser
regularly prescribes outdoor time to address various physical and mental issues. They explain nature
relieves the whole person, not just symptoms -whether through sensory walks (focusing on sight,
smell,and touch),forest bathing,or gentle morning jogging under sunlight,which boosts Vitamin D
and promotes sleep cycles.
These prescriptions are deeply flexible.Dr.Kaiser once advised whale-watching for a patient who
favors the ocean;for others,it might be watching sunsets from a backyard or sitting on a park bench.
"You don't need to escape to Walden Pond for years,"he stressed."Five minutes under a tree can
lower stress and lift your mood."He recommends 30 to 60 minutes of nature exposure two or three times a
week-no intense exercise required.Just being outdoors, even doing nothing, brings real benefits.

We both recognize that being the target of a joke can be hurtful-after all,who gets through third
grade without feeling hurt by a playful comment on the playground?Yet the very same words,if coming
from a good friend,romantic partner,or family members,can actually build a close relationship.We
tease (our friends and joke with our families in ways no one else can.Being open to such
lighthearted teasing around certain people deepens the depth of interpersonal bonds, making us wonder
what lies behind the cases.
The view we have developed to explain this phenomenon is that potentially harmful jokes can be
not only acceptable but also desirable when they are reasonably regarded as a special kind of playful
speech intended to serve purposes other than communicating facts;when interpreted this way, such
jokes are far less likely to cause the harm they might otherwise bring.
To judge if a joke is permitted to tell,we first consider how cruel it is:sharp, mean jokes are
more likely to hurt than gentle ones. Some jokes are just silly wordplay, while others involve hurtful
stereotypes(成见).
Besides, timing also matters:a joke that is otherwise acceptable may turn out problematic when
told in the wake of a tragedy or disaster.Additionally, some jokes are more allowable in certain
settings,like at a bar,than in others,such as grandma's Thanksgiving table.
We also need to reflect on the joker's identity, social position and real intentions. To account for
all these factors,we have put forward the concept of“joke capital'”一a kind of“moral protection'”
against the potential harm of a joke.A joker can only afford to tell a potentially harmful joke if they
have gained enough joke capital, and joke capital comes from "group membership":Being a member
of a particular group earns one a certain amount of joke capital within that group,as people assume you
have no bad intentions.
28.What do we learn about lighthearted teasing in paragraph 1?
A.It is beneficial to personal ties.
B.It can involve sharp comments.
C.It often hurts people a great deal.
D.It is only accepted among friends.

D.Serving non-factual purposes
30.Who is most likely to have "joke capital"according to the text?
A.A cousin who grew up with you.
B.A neighbor you occasionally meet.
C.A boarder sharing the room for a month.
D.A tourist visiting a place for the first time.
31.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To clarify the concept of joke capital.
B.To explain why some jokes cause no harm.
C.To compare different types of acceptable jokes.
D.To persuade readers to avoid telling hurtful jokes.

Faced with worsening floods and a shortage of housing, the Netherlands is seeing growing interest
in floating homes.
When a heavy storm hit in October,2022,residents of the floating community in Amsterdam had
little doubt that they could ride it out. They tied up their bikes and outdoor benches, checked in with
neighbors to ensure everyone had enough food and water, and stayed indoors safely as their
neighborhood slid up and down its steel foundational post, rising along with the water and coming down
to its original position after the rain stopped."We feel safer in a storm because we are floating,"says
Siti Boelen."I think it's kind of strange that building on water is not a priority worldwide."
A floating house can be constructed on any shoreline and is able to deal with rising seas or floods
by remaining atop the water's surface.Unlike houseboats, which can easily be untied and relocated,
floating homes are fixed to the shore, often resting on steel poles, and are usually connected to the local
waste water system and power supply. They are structurally similar to houses built on land, but instead
of a basement,they have a concrete hull(混擬土船体)that acts as a counterbalance,allowing them
to remain stable in the water.
As sea levels rise and strong storms cause waters to rise, floating neighborhoods offer an
experiment in flood defence that could allow coastal communities to better deal with climate change. In
the land-short but crowded Netherlands, demand for such homes is growing. And,as more people look
to build on the water there, officials are working to update zoning laws to make the construction of
floating homes easier.
"The authorities want to expand the concept of floating because it is multifunctional use of space
for housing, and because the sustainable way is the way forward, says Nienke Renssen,an
Amsterdam city councilor.
32.How did the floating community residents react in the 2022 storm?
A.They were forced to relocate to safe places.
B.They felt calm and confident about survival.
C.They called the government for emergency help.
D.They complained about the design of the floating homes.
33.What makes a floating home different from a houseboat?
A.It can be moved around easily.
B.It is not linked to local living facilities.
C.It has a basement to maintain balance in water.
D.It is secured to the shore with supporting structures.
34.What is authorities'attitude towards floating homes?
A.Disapproving.
B.Doubtful.
C.Supportive.
D.Objective.

The holiday season should be about joy,not financial stress.36 Prices are up,budgets are
tight, and the pressure to give meaningful gifts has not gone away.
Luckily, modern psychology offers some good news.37 Research shows that what matters
most to a recipient is the perceived effort, which is the distinct feeling that you made this just for me.
Thanks to the rise of accessible artificial intelligence, creating something heartfelt has never been easier
or more affordable.
We often struggle to express our deepest feelings. You can use AI to help you find the right words,
whether it is gratitude for a parent, admiration for a teacher,or love for a partner.Research shows that
emotionally expressive writing creates deeper relationship satisfaction and strengthens attachment
bonds.
Take a favorite photo and use an AI image generator to reimagine it as a stylized illustration.38
Personalized images activate the "self-relevance bias".When people see themselves designed
artistically, they feel uniquely seen and valued.
AI video tools can organize old photos into a slideshow with music.A voiceover can turn a folder
of images into a family documentary.39
Create a set of personalized acts of service coupons ()These can be practical, such as tech
help or dog-sitting,or they can be focused on quality time, such as studying together or cooking
dinner.Acts of service rank high for emotional impact because they demonstrate a willingness to invest
time and energy, which often speaks louder than material goods.40
A.This is helpful for people who value help over objects.
B.People often value thoughtful gifts far more than expensive ones.
C.AI can be of great help for gift choosing, especially during the holiday.
D.However, for many, this holiday season arrives with an uncomfortable reality.
E.Reflecting on shared memories strengthens family identity and a sense of belonging.
F.Personalized illustrations made with AI are often similar to mass-produced art in style.
G.You can choose from various styles, such as watercolor, comic book art,or futuristic art.

Shalimar Vidyalaya was a reputed educational institution. They had good students who performed
consistently well during exams and excelled in performing arts.Every year, during the inter-college
tournaments(锦标赛),they were guaranteed winners and often picked up the grand prize for most
individual or team medals. However, the one department they seriously fell behind was sports. In
particular,football.
Shalimar's football team was the campus'unspoken embarrassment. Now the annual football
tournament was only half a semester away, and no one hoped for a good result. When the schedule
came out, everyone sighed-they were matched against Don Bastian, the defending champions who
beat them 4:0 last year.
As the tournament was drawing near, the football coach,Vishnu Prakash, was like a cat on hot
bricks. He worried deeply, couldn't help thinking about the team's poor performance and feared another
loss to Don Bastian. His mind raced with anxious thoughts and he eventually found out a solution.
Given that the current team's level was not up to standard,he decided to recruit (excellent
football players among students again.
By the time all the trials to select new members were completed,Vishnu Prakash had a final set of
players with varying abilities. Some were good technicians with great vision, others could find a great
pass, many could shoot capably and others were good runners or leaders. But none of them were good
at goalkeeping and no one wanted to be a goalkeeper.
He was partly disappointed as he dismissed these players at sunset. When he packed his things
and was ready to leave,he spotted a student,Jimmy, practicing football alone on the other football
pitch(足球场).Curiosity pulled Vishnu towards him.“Hey,there,”he called gently.Jimmy froze
mid-kick,his body tensing for a split second. He turned around, eyes wide with surprise.

W:Welcome to Bright Fit Club.I'm Crystal. We all know that exercise is important, but few of
us know how to exercise properly.I've seen many people make the same workout mistakes. One
mistake people often make is focusing on the same routine, which is not good for building up your
muscles.I'd like to suggest that you change your routine every other month.Besides, you can try
different kinds of workouts, such as swimming, jogging and so on.This can help keep your body in
shape.Another mistake most people make is to workout intensely almost every day.You need to give
your body a break, and give time for the muscles to grow. It's not the harder the better.Instead, two
hard workout days every week is enough. If you really hate to skip a day,you can plan easy exercises
on other days. However, experts'suggestion is that you take one day off completely each week.
