A Letter to My Foreign Friend About Chinese Solar Terms
Dear Tom,
How are you? I’m writing to tell you about a special part of Chinese culture—the 24 Solar Terms (节气). It shows how Chinese people are in harmony with nature.
The 24 Solar Terms were made by the farmers in Ancient China over 2,000 years ago. They cut the year into 24 parts by looking at the sun’s place. Each term has its own meaning. For example, “Grain Buds” means wheat and rice begin to have grains. “Autumn Equinox” is the day when day and night are the same length.
These terms are still useful today. Farmers use them to plan their work in the fields. They put seeds in the ground around “Spring Equinox” and gather food before “Winter Solstice”. Many people also use the terms to stay healthy. In summer, people eat more fruits and vegetables during “Minor Heat” to feel cool. In winter, they eat hot pot on “Major Cold” to feel warm.
I think the 24 Solar Terms are wonderful. They show how smart people were long ago in China. Do you want to know more about other Chinese traditions? Write back soon.
Yours,
Wang Hua
49. Why do farmers use the 24 Solar Terms?
A. To keep healthy. B. To plan farming work.
C. To celebrate festivals. D. To travel around.
50. The underlined phrase “in harmony with” means ________.
A. 远离 B. 依赖 C. 和谐相处 D. 控制
51. What is the main idea of the letter?
A. Introduce the 24 Solar Terms to Tom. B. Invite Tom to visit China.
C. Talk about Chinese festivals. D. Share farming experiences.

California had bad wildfires in Southern California in January 2025. Strong winds and dry conditions caused the fires. They spread fast and changed quickly, putting many communities in danger. To protect people and their homes, Governor Gavin Newsom said that over 7,500 firefighters and emergency workers were sent to fight the fires.
The state government did a lot to help with the problem. Governor Newso made a special rule to support communities affected (影响) by the fires that are still happening. He also said the state was in a state of emergency to make rescue (营救) work faster. The government got help from the federal government to support the work of dealing with the fires, including support for fighting three big fires: the Hurst, Eaton, and Palisades fires.
California used all the resources they had for the fight. Local fire departments, state offices, and federal teams worked closely together. Other states also gave help: Oregon sent 75 fire engines, Washington sent 45, and smaller numbers were sent from New Mexico, Utah, and Idaho. This brought hundreds more firefighters. Before the strong winds came, the state’s emergency office had already put 65 fire engines, 7 helicopters, and over 105 special workers in dangerous places. CAL FIRE, the state’s forest fire department, sent over 4,700 workers, 31 helicopters, and more than 1,000 fire engines. Four shelters were opened to give safe places to live and basic things for about 500 people.
“We are trying our best to protect our communities,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. For more information on staying safe during emergencies, people could visit the official web page: ready.ca.gov.

Red-crowned cranes are one of the rarest birds in the world. They mainly live in wetlands in China and other Asian countries. However, their habitats (栖息地) are getting smaller because of human activities like farming on wetland land and building houses. ____56____ Luckily, new technology is helping to protect these beautiful birds.
Scientists in Jiangsu Province have put small GPS trackers on 20 red-crowned cranes. ____57____ They are light and won’t hurt the cranes. They can record the birds’ flying routes, resting places, and feeding areas. The information is sent to computers, allowing scientists to learn more about the cranes’ living habits. ____58____ For example, they found that the cranes travel over 1,000 kilometers every year to spend winter in warmer places.
Another technology used is drone monitoring. Drones can fly high over wetlands and take clear photos of the cranes without disturbing them or making them scared. This helps scientists count the number of cranes and check if they are healthy. ____59____ Local governments have also built more nature reserves to provide safe habitats for the cranes to live in.
Thanks to these efforts, the number of red-crowned cranes in China has increased from 1,000 to 1,600 in the past 10 years. ____60____ “Technology is a powerful tool for wildlife protection,” said a scientist. “We will keep on using it to save more endangered animals like red crowned cranes.”

The sun was shining. Mia, her brother Leo and their parents went to Coral Cove Beach. Mia wanted to run to the water. But Dad said, “Wait. Let’s read the rules first.” He showed them the colorful flags by the lifeguard tower. “The red and yellow flags show the safe place to swim. Stay in this place.” Leo said yes. He put on sunscreen quickly.
They made sandcastles. Then they played in the water. Mia was happy. But Leo said, “The water is pulling (拖拽) me!” Dad ran to him. Leo was in a rip current. The water there looked darker and moved fast. “Swim along the beach, not toward it,” Dad said. Leo did that. Soon, he was safe.
A lifeguard named Zoe came. She said, “Rip currents happen here. Stay calm and you can swim out.” She also told them about big waves (波浪) that come fast. The rocks are wet and you can fall. “Always swim with someone. Look after your friends and family,” she said.
They played in the safe place. They rested in the shade. They looked at the water. When the sun set, Mia smiled. “The beach is fun. But we must be safe,” she said. Everyone agreed. If you are careful, a day at the beach can be fun and safe.

We gathered on the playground and stayed there for 10 minutes. The drill helped us learn how to protect ourselves in an earthquake.
Yours,
Wang Hua

California had bad wildfires in Southern California in January 2025. Strong winds and dry conditions caused the fires. They spread fast and changed quickly, putting many communities in danger. To protect people and their homes, Governor Gavin Newsom said that over 7,500 firefighters and emergency workers were sent to fight the fires.
The state government did a lot to help with the problem. Governor Newso made a special rule to support communities affected (影响) by the fires that are still happening. The government got help from the federal government to support the work of dealing with the fires, including support for fighting three big fires: the Hurst, Eaton, and Palisades fires.
California used all the resources they had for the fight. Local fire departments, state offices, and federal teams worked closely together.

【60题详解】
根据前文“Thanks to these efforts, the number of red-crowned cranes in China has increased from 1,000 to 1,600 in the past 10 years.”可知,多亏了这些努力,丹顶鹤的数量在过去10年从1000只增加到1600只。空处需要总结说明数量增长与这些保护行为的关系。选项E“数量的增长表明保护工作确实有效。”符合语境。故选E。

The sun was shining. Mia, her brother Leo and their parents went to Coral Cove Beach. Mia wanted to run to the water. But Dad said, “Wait.
