Generations are typically defined as groups of people within a specific time period who share common social experiences. Below is the list of the most notable generational groups.
Baby boomers
Baby boomers are individuals born between 1946 and 1964, during a period known as the “baby boom”, which saw a significant increase in birth rates following World War Ⅱ. The cohort (一批人) is generally expected to have a longer lifespan compared to earlier generations. They benefited from a stable post-war economy, allowing them to accumulate wealth and secure leadership roles across multiple sectors.
Generation X
Generation X refers to those who were born between 1965 and 1980. Gen Xers were often called the Latchkey Generation because many came home from school to empty houses, needing a key to let themselves in. This was due to rising divorce rates, increased maternal (母亲的) workforce participation, and limited childcare options. As parents, they were the first to adopt“helicopter parenting”, being more involved in their children’s lives.
Generation Y
Born between 1981 and 1996, Gen Yers are also known as millennials. The cohort embraced the world with optimism. They were all about taking care of themselves and making the world a better place. In terms of parenting, millennials, who were “helicoptered over” in their youth, allow their children to explore and create without constant structure or supervision.
Generation Z
Gen Zers, born between 1997 and 2009, grew up in a time where information and technology played a central role in their lives. However, some of them saw it almost as an escape, rather than just a source of entertainment and relaxation. This generation has learned that the economy can face sudden crisis, leading them to adopt more conservative (保守的) approaches both economically and socially.
1. Why is Generation X called the Latchkey Generation?
A. Gen Xers resisted attending school. B. Gen Xers acquired enormous wealth.
C. Gen Xers were often left on their own. D. Gen Xers were in charge of house keys.
2. What do millennials feature?
A. They closely manage their kids’ life. B. They appeared increasingly positive.
C. They prepare well for economic crisis. D. They use a freer way to raise their kids.
3. Which generation group are especially cautious of their finance?
A. Baby boomers. B. Generation X. C. Generation Y. D. Generation Z.

根据文章第三段“Gen Xers were often called the Latchkey Generation because many came home from school to empty houses, needing a key to let themselves in.(X一代人也被称作挂钥匙一代,因为许多孩子放学回家后,面对的是空无一人的房子,需要自己拿钥匙开门。)”
根据文章第四段“In terms of parenting, millennials, who were “helicoptered over” in their youth, allow their children to explore and create without constant structure or supervision.(在育儿理念上,年少时被父母直升机式呵护长大的千禧一代,会给予孩子更多探索和创造的空间,不会用条条框框的约束和时刻的监督束缚孩子。)”
根据文章第五段“This generation has learned that the economy can face sudden crisis, leading them to adopt more conservative (保守的) approaches both economically and socially(这一代人亲历了经济领域的突发危机,也因此在经济和社会生活中,形成了更为保守的处事方式。)”

We initiated the bus trips when I was around seven years old. Back then we lived at our grandparents’ house in Oceanside, California. Our financial situation became increasingly tight after my father, who had dedicated over two decades to serving in the Air Force, honorably retired and subsequently encountered challenges in securing a stable position in the civilian workforce. We were also struggling to find an affordable place to call our own.
It would have been easy to give in to frustration. But mom had other ideas and I only appreciated the full extent of her wisdom many years later.
Once or twice a week, she would lead my brother and me to the bus stop, and from there we would “see the world”. The public transportation system was extensive, and with one ticket we could ride all day. My mom studied the routes carefully and guided us to a variety of destinations.
Among our favorites was the mall in Carlsbad. At its center stood a glass clock tower with gears (齿轮) that rolled plastic balls along rails, bouncing them onto drums and ramps, then lifting them up again to repeat the cycle. The sight always drew a small crowd, mostly children. On other days, we took the bus to Strand Beach, where we watched ships in the distance and heard helicopters and aircraft soaring overhead toward the naval (海军的) base at Camp Pendleton.
Every trip we took felt like a grand expedition (出行), and I was grateful to my mom for making that difficult period so enjoyable. Eventually, my father found a steady job, and we moved into a home in the countryside.
My mom did more than made us forget our troubles. She instilled in us enthusiasm for keeping our eyes open and appreciating the world that was ours without having to really pay anything. Most importantly, she showed us that regardless of where we were, and what we were going through, there was something we could smile about somewhere.
4. What difficulty did the family face?
A. The father lost his job in the Air Force. B. They had no fixed place of residence.
C. They lived far away from the city. D. They lacked financial stability.
5. What did the mother do when facing the difficulty?
A. She led her kids to seek joy. B. She contacted her husband frequently.
C. She found a new home in the countryside. D. She explored job opportunities in Carlsbad.
6. What does the author most appreciate about his mom now?
A. Her knowledge of public transportation. B. Her skill in planning detailed travel routes.
C. Her wisdom in shaping their outlook on life. D. Her patience during their struggling bus trips.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Mother’s Wisdom: Reminding Kids Of Their Dreams
B. Kids’ Bus Trips: A Mother’s Wisely planned Distraction
C. From Air Force To Civilian Life: A Family’s Struggle
D. California’s Public Transport: A Child’s Perspective
D 5. A 6. C 7. B

C
Understanding a simple-looking sentence like “I read this article yesterday” actually requires complex computation (计算): a subject (“I”) performed an action (“read”) on an object (“article”) at a specific time (“yesterday”). But the human brain routinely does this work nearly instantly based on grammatical rules, says linguist Andrea E. Martin. His team has now found that the brain accommodates grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence.
For a recent study in PLOS Biology, the researchers observed variations in Dutch-speaking participants’ brain waves while they listened to a Dutch audio book. To visualize these changes, the scientists used a metric (衡量标准) quantifying how many new “predictions” the brain makes of words that could come next. This framework was then tested against three different parsing (句法分析的) strategies that illustrate how the brain builds information over time.
Previous English-based studies concluded in favor of a model where listeners “wait and see” how each phrase ends before interpreting it. But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strongly toward a predictive model; participants tended to finish each phrase in their head before it was complete. A third model, in which listeners wait for all phrases before interpreting any part, is seldom used in either language.
In Dutch, verbs sometimes come near the end of a sentence, explains study author Cas W. Coopmans. For instance, “because I ate a cookie with chocolate” in Dutch would be “because I a cookie with chocolate ate”. Listeners would have to wait long for the verb, so predictive processing becomes more natural. Neither strategy is “better or worse”, Coopmans adds. It is simply suited to the properties of each language.
The findings support the need for more diversity in linguistic models, says Jixing Li, a linguist at City University of Hong Kong. If studies are done only in English speakers, crucial differences will be missed. Diversifying research, Martin says, will help capture how the brain understands the structured meaning and social utility of language.
8. What does Martin’s team discover about the brain?
A. It interprets words randomly. B. It adapts to grammar rules.
C. It favors grammatical changes. D. It ignores sentence structures.
9. What model do Dutch speakers prefer?
A. Waiting for full phrases. B. Predicting phrase endings.
C. Ignoring verb positions. D. Following English strategies.
10. Why is predictive processing natural for Dutch?
A. Its verbs occasionally appear late. B. It has simpler grammatical rules.
C. It uses common vocabulary. D. Its sentences are generally longer.
11. What do the findings stress?
A. English is the best study language. B. Dutch is much harder to process.
C. People ignore social language use. D. Linguistic models need diversity.
B 9. B 10. A 11. D

根据第一段“His team has now found that the brain accommodates grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence.(他的团队如今发现,大脑会通过调整处理每个句子的方式来适应不同语言间的语法差异)”可知,大脑会适应不同的语法规则。
根据第三段“But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strongly toward a predictive model; participants tended to finish each phrase in their head before it was complete.(但马丁研究中的荷兰语使用者明显倾向于预测性模式;参与者往往会在每个短语结束前就在脑中补全它)”可知,荷兰语使用者偏爱预测短语结尾的模式。
根据第四段“In Dutch, verbs sometimes come near the end of a sentence, explains study author Cas W. Coopmans. For instance, “because I ate a cookie with chocolate” in Dutch would be “because I a cookie with chocolate ate”. Listeners would have to wait long for the verb, so predictive processing becomes more natural. (研究作者Cas W. Coopmans解释说,在荷兰语中,动词有时会出现在句末附近。例如,荷兰语中的“因为我吃了一块巧克力饼干”就是“因为我一块有巧克力的饼干吃掉了”。听者需要等很久才能听到动词,因此预测性处理就变得更为自然)”可知,荷兰语中动词偶尔出现在句末是预测性处理更自然的原因。故选A项。
根据最后一段“The findings support the need for more diversity in linguistic models, (该研究结果表明,语言模型需要更多的多样性)”可知,研究发现强调了语言模型需要多样性。故选D项。

Breaking a big goal into smaller parts might seem like a simple trick. In fact, it is a strategy that can be applied widely — to exercising regularly, saving money, or building a new skill. But is there real scientific evidence for its effectiveness? To figure it out, our team carried out a large-scale field experiment with thousands of participants in everyday settings.
For our study, we partnered with Crisis Text Line (CTL), a nonprofit providing free text counseling CTL volunteers are expected to complete 200 hours of service each year, which is quite demanding compared with the national average. We wondered whether setting smaller subgoals (子目标) would encourage greater participation.
In our study, over 9,000 volunteers received e-mails presenting the yearly target in different ways for three months. Some were told simply to aim for 200 hours with no detailed goal breakdown, while others were encouraged to meet either four hours per week or eight hours every two weeks. Then we tracked how much time each group of trained counselors actually spent volunteering during the study.
The results showed that people with smaller subgoals volunteered 7 percent to 8 percent more than those given only the big goal. This may sound like a modest increase, but when scaled across CTL’s thousands of volunteers, our intervention translated to thousands of additional counseling hours every month at essentially zero cost to the organization. We also found that the more flexible “eight hours every two weeks” condition led to more lasting benefits, as declines in volunteering were slower than in the stricter “four hours every week” condition.
Our study dovetails with the research by behavioral scientists Hal Hershfield and Shlomo Benartzi. Their work shows that people are four times more likely to sign up for a savings program when the required deposit (存款) is described as $5 a day rather than $150 a month. Taken together, this recent research suggests that whether goals require taking a single action or big goals need sticking with for a long time, subgoals may help.
12. What did the field experiment focus on?
A. The cost of volunteering. B. The effect of flexible schedule.
C. The method of attaining ambitious goals. D. The effectiveness of subgoals.
13. How was the field experiment conducted?
A. By interviewing volunteers about their preferences.
B. By instructing participants in breaking down goals.
C. By comparing different goal-setting approaches.
D. By providing counselors with novel techniques.
14. What does the underlined phrase “dovetails with” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Corresponds with. B. Subscribes to. C. Conflicts with. D. Goes to.
15. What does the study suggest about the breakdown of goals?
A. It requires weekly devotion. B. It encourages lasting effort.
C. It ensures stricter discipline. D. It makes big goal more clear.
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据文章第一段“Breaking a big goal into smaller parts might seem like a simple trick. In fact, it is a strategy that can be applied widely — to exercising regularly, saving money, or building a new skill. But is there real scientific evidence for its effectiveness? To figure it out, our team carried out a large-scale field experiment with thousands of participants in everyday settings.(把大目标拆解成一个个小目标,看似只是个简单的小技巧,实则是一种能广泛应用的策略——无论是规律锻炼、存钱,还是培养新技能。但这一方法的有效性是否有切实的科学依据?为了找到答案,我们的团队在日常场景中开展了一项有数千名参与者的大规模实地实验。)”可知,its指代将大目标拆解为小目标的策略,研究团队开展实地实验正是为了验证该策略的有效性,即实验聚焦于子目标的有效性。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“In our study, over 9,000 volunteers received e- mails presenting the yearly target in different ways for three months. Some were told simply to aim for 200 hours with no detailed goal breakdown, while others were encouraged to meet either four hours per week or eight hours every two weeks. Then we tracked how much time each group of trained counselors actually spent volunteering during the study.(研究期间,我们在三个月内通过邮件向9000多名志愿者传达了年度服务目标,且采用了不同的表述方式。
根据划线词组所在语境“Our study dovetails with the research by behavioral scientists Hal Hershfield and Shlomo Benartzi. Their work shows that people are four times more likely to sign up for a savings program when the required deposit (存款) is described as $5 a day rather than $150 a month. 相符、契合”,与选项A“Corresponds with(与……一致)”一致。故选A。
根据文章第四段“We also found that the more flexible “eight hours every two weeks” condition led to more lasting benefits, as declines in volunteering were slower than in the stricter “four hours every week” condition.(我们还发现,更灵活的双周8小时目标设定方式,能带来更持久的效果 —— 相较于要求更严格的周均4小时组,该组志愿者的服务时长下滑速度更慢。)”以及最后一段“Taken together, this recent research suggests that whether goals require taking a single action or big goals need sticking with for a long time, subgoals may help.(综合来看,这些近期的研究均表明:无论目标是需要采取一次性行动的短期任务,还是需要长期坚持的大目标,设定小目标或许都能起到积极的助推作用。)”
It’s easy to lose our critical thinking around the holidays.____16____. Here are four common scams (诈财骗局) worth watching out for.
Watch out for fake retail (零售) ads on social media
____17____. They sell fake branded products and use stolen logos to appear authentic. The store might disappear shortly after you’ve placed your order. If you’ re trading with a new vendor (供应商) put its name in a search engine, and type the words “scam” and “complaint” after it, using other shoppers’ experiences with the company to guide your own.
Be careful about fake gift cards
If you’re looking to buy a gift card for someone, know that it is possible for scammers to get the gift card number and PIN before you buy it in the store.____18____. We recommend buying gift cards that are close to the front of the store. There might be more eyes watching them. We also suggest purchasing electronic gift cards instead of physical cards.
____19____
It’s more common to receive unexpected packages around the holidays, and scammers will use that to their advantage. They’ll send out fake messages saying they’ re from a shipping company and that there’s a problem with your account. If so, reach out separately to the company’s customer service line and confirm that a package is indeed coming your way.
Don’t fall for fake travel deals
Travel prices can get expensive around the holidays, leading some to search online for better deals. Be cautious about suspiciously cheap fares and new travel websites. There are lots of reports about car rental scams. People think they’ re getting a great deal, but they need to prepay. Then they reach their location and there’s no car. Check any new travel website.____20____.
A. Be cautious of fake accounts
B. Never share personal information
C. Be on guard against fake delivery texts
D. Scammers open stores online for a limited period of time
E. If you add money onto it, they are able to instantly withdraw it
F. So there are a lot more opportunities for scammers to steal from us
G. If possible, stick to vendors you have a preexisting relationship with
F 17. D 18. E 19. C 20. G

After seeing a sci-fi film, which tells the story of a young boy boarding an express train on Christmas Eve to visit Santa Claus at the North Pole, 4-year-old John had been asking about going on a train. Then his mother Elaine booked them a ride on one of those Polar
Express-themed trains on Christmas Eve. She hoped he would be innocent enough to enjoy the whole experience.
When they boarded the train, he kept asking questions about how fast they would go, how far they would travel, whether they were really going to the North Pole, how long it would take to get there, and whether time would slow down like in the film.
As they rolled along in the train, John asked again, “When are we going to go fast?” Elaine knew what he meant. He often talked about how fast the train moved in that film, and Elaine imagined that he pictured them doing the same. He wanted to fly through time, feel the wind on his face, and see the world rush by and change from mountains to snow to frozen water and ice caps like the character in the film.
“This is as fast as it goes,” Elaine said. He frowned, and she added, “It’s because there are so many small kids here who would be scared to go faster.” He eyed other kids around. “They’ll be okay,” he promised.
Then, a conductor came down the aisle (过道), and John flagged him down.“Can this train go faster like in the film?” he asked.“Like fifty miles an hour, or maybe five hundred?”
The conductor, with a knowing smile, said, “I’m going to see what we can do. I’ll go ask the engineer.” John smiled, content with himself. The conductor knew it was impossible to speed up as the boy liked, but they wouldn’t destroy the little boy’s fancy. They decided to stage another edition of the experience. Then, he walked away, offering Elaine a private smile.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
After waiting for minutes, John found the train slowed down and even stopped instead of going faster.

When John saw the “repairman” waiting outside the train, his jaw dropped.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After waiting for minutes, John found the train slowed down and even stopped instead of going faster. His eyes widened in confusion and disappointment. “Why is it stopping?” he cried out. Elaine tried to comfort him, saying it might be some technical issue. Just then, the conductor rushed back, looking a bit worried. “I’m sorry, little guy,” he said. “The engine seems to have a problem. But don’t worry, we’ve called a repairman. He’ll be here soon to fix it and then we can go even faster.” John nodded reluctantly, still looking a bit sad.
When John saw the “repairman” waiting outside the train, his jaw dropped. The “repairman” was dressed exactly like Santa Claus! He climbed aboard with a big smile and a bag full of tools. “Ho-ho-ho! Don’t worry, young man,” Santa said. “I’ll get this train running in no time, and we’ll be zipping along faster than you can imagine.” As he “fixed” the train, he told John stories about the North Pole. Soon, the train started moving again, and this time, the speed increased. John’s face lit up with joy, believing that Santa had made his wish come true.

This generation has learned that the economy can face sudden crisis, leading them to adopt more conservative (保守) approaches both economically and socially.
B
We initiated the bus trips when I was around seven years old. Back then, we lived at our grandparents’ house in Oceanside, California.

In Dutch verbs sometimes come near the end of a sentence, explains study author Cas W.
A It interprets words randomly.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
After waiting for minutes, John found the train slowed down and even stopped instead of going faster.
