The Chinese pingfeng (folding screen) is an ancient invention and traditional Chinese furniture (家具). Its earliest common use dates from the Han Dynasty. The term “pingfeng” means protection from wind at the very beginning.
As time passes, it has been made into different sizes with colorful paintings. On the pingfeng usually appears a dragon. It’s a symbol of nobility (贵族) and power. The peacock, a beautiful bird, can be seen on the pingfeng, too. It’s a symbol of everlasting (永恒的) life. Beautiful flowers, which mean wealth and good luck, are also chosen as a popular design of the pingfeng. All the designs carry people’s beautiful wishes.
Behind the pingfeng lies an interesting story. In the past, the unmarried daughter of a rich family was not supposed to see or be seen by men except her father, brothers or very close male cousins. When an admirer paid a visit, however, she might take a secret look at him from the pingfeng behind which she would be completely hidden. Her father would discuss poems with the young man and ask him to create one. If the daughter and her father were satisfied with the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to take him as a husband.
Today the pingfeng is back in fashion for its beauty and its practical (实际的) use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall or divider, it can be the perfect match for modern sofas and walls, which adds style to them.
3. What was the pingfeng used for at the very beginning?

B. The beautiful story behind the pingfeng.
C. The general introduction to the pingfeng.

Have you ever been to a history museum? What can you see there? To see artifacts, we had to rush to museums in different places in the past. But there is no need to do so now. We can see them easily online.
The year 2025 marks the first anniversary (周年纪念日) of the birth of the Shanhai App, a new digital (数字的) platform (平台). It has been popular since it was introduced in Changsha in August 2024. This app brings together lots of artifacts from around the world into one digital platform. It helps to overcome the weakness of traditional museums, where artifacts are only shown in one place.
Nowadays, people are very interested in museums and cultural treasures. The Shanhai App deals with the problems between museums, areas and countries. It creates an open digital space where everyone can see, share and enjoy artifacts and cultural treasures.
Xu Jie, from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, says if the platform works well, it will be good for both people in China and those around the world to understand China’s cultural treasures better. Hou Ningbin, from the Shanxi History Museum, thinks the most important thing about the Shanhai App is that it lets more people help create works about museums. The app connects museum experts with people who are interested in museum culture. This makes it easier for people to understand China’s rich cultural heritage (遗产).
In the future, the Shanhai App plans to digitize many more artifacts from museums across China. This will create a data (数据) system for cultural treasures. The data can be used for research, education and even many other fields.
7. What does the underlined word “artifacts” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. 美术作品 B. 历史文物 C. 人工智能

A. The data can be widely used in many fields.

第一节
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
One day I was stuck on the final problem on my math homework. After about an hour, I came up with a solution, but it was so complicated (复杂的) that I feared getting a big “F”.
The next day, I handed in my homework and sat through the whole morning with butterflies in my stomach. Finally the math class came. The teacher handed back our homework, and that made me nervous: But after I opened mine, my worry turned into happiness and pride. Besides the red check mark were a handwritten “Great idea!” and a sticker that read “Genius (天才)!” I put the sticker on the first page of my notebook. It is still there today. It’s a reminder of how one teacher’s kindness and creativity turned the fear of making mistakes into the courage to keep thinking.
Soon, this creative grading style led to a wave of enthusiasm (热情) in our class. My classmate Jack turned difficult math problems into a catchy poem, earning him the title of “poet of science”. Another student designed a “timeline” for a math problem and earned a “logician (逻辑学家)” sticker. For wrong answers, our teacher would draw a thinking face with words like “A good try! Let’s rethink this together.” and there was never any punishment.
These warm words and cute stickers really light up our passion for learning. They not only make homework fun but also make us feel seen, brave, and proud to try new things. Thank you, my dear teacher, for making math learning such a wonderful journey!
