As writers in western cultures, fall is a difficult season for ___11___ to describe.
On the one hand, it is the ___12___ of the summer. When you ___13___ in the morning, there’s mist (薄雾) and it’s cooler. You know that winter is coming. On the other hand, fall has its good side. There are so many ___15___ in nature at this time of year: the red and brown colors that the leaves change to, and the way they fall from the trees. French writer Albert Camus ___16___ thought fall was a second spring: “Fall is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
Another ___17___ of fall is wisdom (智慧). The coming of the season is just like a person becoming mature (成熟的). At this time, it’s thought that people have ___18___ a thing or two about life.
Of course there are many other subjects about fall. For example, it’s the beginning of a new term of the school year. ___19___ fall can be a writing topic (话题) for children and young people. Ask a cook from Guangdong about “wok hei” (锅气), and you might hear it described as “that smoky taste”. Steph Li, the owner of Savory Kitchen, gives a better way to describe it. She says it is a great taste. This special taste comes from how restaurants use oil. It also comes from the nice brown color of the food when it’s cooked perfectly. My father always enjoyed wok hei the most. To him, the way restaurants cook is what makes food good.
Real wok hei only comes out when food is cooked with strong heat, which is hard to do on most home stoves (厨灶). Having cooked in the kitchen for fifteen years, I’ve spent a long time perfecting this great taste. Last year, I finally made it.
The secret is not just using a hot stove. Using the right pans is also very important. Steph Li says carbon steel (碳钢) pans work best. She shares two easy ways for home cooks: First, pour soy sauce (酱油) around the side of the pan to make a special burnt soy sauce taste; second, use a kitchen torch (喷火枪) to slowly go over the food a few times, a method called “torch hei (火烧)”.
When I cook with my black iron pan and add the burnt soy sauce, the whole kitchen is filled with a wonderful smell. The food gets that beautiful dark brown color just like in restaurants. At these happy moments, I remember my father’s love for wok hei. It feels like I can hear him opening my kitchen door and saying those words I always wanted to hear, “I like the food here.” This special and distinctive taste makes all my hard work worth it.
24. How does Steph Li describe wok hei in Paragraph 1?
A. A simple smoky taste. B. A nice taste with good color. C. A perfect way for cooking. D. A special need for cooking oil.
25. How many years of experience does the writer have as a cook?
A. 5. B. 10. C. 15. D. 20.
26. What does the underlined word “distinctive” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Normal to find. B. Difficult to notice. C. Easy to recognize. D. Expensive to buy.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Making Wok Hei at Home. B. Carbon Steel’s Special Taste. C. Memories of a Cook’s Father. D. Tips from a Restaurant Owner.

One day in the hot summer, I noticed an old woman walking slowly with a walker when I was driving home. She carried two heavy bags that seemed to pull her down. Slowing down, I opened the window and called out, “Need a ride?” She nodded and smiled with thanks. “Bless you, child,” she said and got in.
“I’m Ida,” she said. “I work at the supermarket but missed my bus today.”
“Don’t worry—I’ll get you there,” I replied.
I drove through streets I’d never seen before. The buildings grew older as we went. Finally, she pointed ahead. “That’s my home.”
When we stopped, I saw some young men standing near the door. One with long hair and a hoodie (连帽卫衣) was looking at me with a strange smile that made me uncomfortable. I parked the car and helped Ida out. She thanked me again, then turned to the young men, asking them to carry her bags. Once she walked inside, I quickly drove away.
Soon I heard a motorcycle (摩托车) behind me. To my surprise, it was the young man who just looked at me and smiled! He was waving for me to stop. I felt scared, so I reached for my wallet to take my cell phone out—I had to call 911. But my wallet wasn’t there! My heart sank (下沉). “Ida stole my wallet! So much for acts of kindness!”
Suddenly, I noticed another wallet on the seat, but it wasn’t mine. Then I saw the man right outside my window, waving my wallet! I couldn’t believe my eyes. He rode up, holding out my wallet. “My grandma took yours by mistake,” he explained. “She’s very sorry and hopes you’re not angry.” He was still smiling. This time, his smile didn’t appear threatening (有威胁的), simply kind and warm.
Sometimes, we judge a person’s character wrongly because they don’t fit what we think is right. They may not drive a nice car, live in the “good” part of town, or dress fashionably, but who can say they are not as good as or better than us?
28. How might Ida usually go home after work?
A. She walks home. B. She rides a bike home. C. She takes a taxi home. D. She takes a bus home.
29. What can we infer from the text?
A. Ida knew the writer would help her. B. The author often gave strangers a ride.
C. The young man was friendly and helpful. D. The young man wanted to scare the writer.
30. According to the story, what kind of person is the writer?
A. Brave and quick to act. B. Careless and easy to forget. C. Helpful and willing to learn. D. Unfriendly and hard to please.
31. Each picture below shows a scene (场景) from the story. Which picture is unnecessary?
A. B. C. D.

Writing a good article in 20 minutes during tests is hard work that needs both quick thinking and new ideas. While AI seems to help with such tasks, new research shows this help may bring problems to how we think.
Researchers studied students’ brain activity during writing. Some students used AI helpers while others wrote alone. The results showed that students using AI had much lower brain activity. This activity was in the parts of the brain connected to creative thinking and solving problems.
It’s not clear whether using AI will change our thinking for a long time. The study included just a few students and only focused on writing, so we need more research to understand what these findings really mean.
People have always worried about new tools. Long ago, people often felt worried about new inventions. For example, some smart people long ago thought writing would make memory worse, and others believed calculators (计算器) could be bad for learning math. Still, people kept these skills while using the new tools.
What makes AI special is that it can finish thinking tasks. However, many users find that once they begin depending on AI for their thinking, they can hardly break this habit. “I depend on AI so heavily that I’ve lost confidence in solving problems on my own,” one user shared.
Although AI is still new, our brains remain the best tool we have for many tasks. People will need to decide if the help from AI is worth the risk of making our thinking skills worse.
32. What does the new research find according to the passage?
A. AI users are more creative. B. AI changes our thinking abilities for a long time.
C. Not all the students used AI. D. AI may harm the way we think.
33. What is the purpose of the calculator example in Paragraph 4?
A. It shows AI is a new invention. B. It proves that tools are bad for learning skills.
C. It explains that tool worries are common. D. It compares AI with traditional tools.
34. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A. AI works faster than human brains. B. AI can help users build good habits.
C. AI can do the thinking for us. D. AI users have lower brain activity.
35. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce the functions of AI in writing. B. To warn against using AI heavily.
C. To show the power of human brains. D. To share the experience of an AI user.

Dear classmates,
Last week, we started the “Community Helpers” activity. You talked to people who do important jobs around us. What did you learn about their jobs? How did you feel after talking to them? Please share your stories.
8:23 p.m.5 July
I talked with Ms. Chen, a street cleaner. In the past, I thought her job was easy and not important. But I was wrong. She taught me how to sort (分类) rubbish. She said one used battery can pollute the water and soil. Her job is not only about cleaning. More importantly, it plays an important role in helping keep our neighborhood healthy. Now I see her job in a new way.
9:17 p.m.5 July
I met Officer Li, a policeman in our community. His job is not only to catch bad people, but also to help others. For example, he visits old people who live by themselves or helps neighbors in need. He said, “A good community needs people to trust and help each other.” Now I understand his uniform is not about power, but about love and help.
I visited Mr. Wang in the school library. Today, many people use computers and phones to read. So I thought his job was not very useful. But after talking to him, I realized a librarian’s role is more about guiding reading. I even saw him help students pick good books, plan fun reading games for kids, and teach the elderly to use the library online. He said, “I help people learn new things and connect with others here.”
41. Did Steve think the street cleaner’s job was important before?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
42. Who does Officer Li often visit?

The pursuit (追求) of happiness is a basic part of human life. Most of us believe that when life goes well, we should naturally feel happy. However, the truth is that many people who live comfortably still tend to (倾向) feel dissatisfied.
This common problem mainly comes from our habit of thinking too much. When we overthink, we begin to keep making our expectations for happiness higher and compare our real life with perfect imaginary standards. We stop valuing what we already have and focus only on what’s missing. This habit actually destroys (破坏) our happy moments. It’s like looking at a tiny spot on a clean shirt and letting that small flaw (瑕疵) make us forget how nice the shirt really is.
Let me give you another example. Imagine your friends plan a wonderful birthday party for you. Instead of simply enjoying it, you might start checking if everything meets your expectations. This is where our thinking makes the difference. You could choose to enjoy the moment and have fun with your friends. Or you might think, “This would be perfect only if all my friends were here.” Such thoughts will only bring disappointment (失望). But does this mean we should stop trying to be happy? Certainly not. What we need to do is learning to notice the beauty in imperfect things, for true happiness never comes without flaws.
Most importantly, we should stop thinking that life is just preparation for future happiness. If we enjoy each moment, we can get real happiness.
The pursuit of happiness is human nature but many people feel dissatisfied even though ___54___, mainly because overthinking makes them ___55___ and compare reality with perfect standards. Therefore, we should ___56___, for true happiness is never without flaws. We should also enjoy every moment to gain true joy, instead of ___57___.
IX.

A. Brave and quick to act. B. Careless and easy to forget. C. Helpful and willing to learn. D. Unfriendly and hard to please.

【答案】32. D 33. C 34. C 35. B

Most importantly we should stop thinking that life is just preparation for future happiness. If we enjoy each moment, we can get real happiness.
The pursuit of happiness is human nature, but many people feel dissatisfied even though ___54___, mainly because overthinking makes them ___55___ and compare reality with perfect standards.
