THE MOMENT was completely unexpected. It came in 2013, when Jane Goodall was 79, and was helping return a chimpanzee (黑猩猩) called Wounda to the wild. They had not met before. As Wounda stepped nervously from her cage, she suddenly jumped into Jane’s arms to embrace (拥抱) and kiss her. Ms Goodall never forgot the warmth of that embrace.
It might have been a thank-you from all chimpanzees. She had spent her whole life with them. In 1957, she went to Tanzania and started studying chimpanzees in the Gombe Stream National Park.
Her most important sighting, though, came when she noticed David, a chimpanzee, sitting by an ant hill. In his hand was a grass stem, which he stuck into the nest to bring out ants to eat. Another time he used a small branch from which he had pulled off the leaves. In short, he was preparing and using tools. Her greatest discovery broke the long-held idea that only humans could do this, shaking the field of human studies. She named chimpanzees like David instead of giving them numbers, as she saw them as individuals with unique personalities, joys, and fears.
However, chimpanzees soon faced great dangers. Their numbers were greatly reduced due to the bush-meat trade, and their habitats were destroyed. This pained Goodall deeply, and she turned from a scientist into an activist. She didn’t just speak out; she worked closely with local communities, teaching villagers to grow crops without cutting down forests and setting up safe zones for chimps to move freely.
In 1991, she set up Roots & Shoots, a programme that encouraged school children to do small things to help animals, neighbours or the land. In 2002, she became a UN messenger of peace, but she saw herself more as a messenger of hope.
Her life proved that passion and care could bridge the gap between humans and nature, inspiring people worldwide to protect our shared world.
4. Why does the writer mention the embrace in paragraph 1?
A To celebrate Wounda’s returning to the wild.
B. To explain chimpanzees’ friendliness towards humans.
C. To honor Goodall’s lifelong contribution to chimpanzees.
D. To show the connection between Goodall and chimpanzees.
5. Why is Jane Goodall’s discovery about chimpanzees important?
A. It proves chimpanzees are as intelligent as humans.
B It challenges the view that only man can make tools.
C. It shows chimpanzees are different from other animals.
D. It provides new evidence that chimpanzees have feelings.
6. What turned Jane Goodall into an activist?
A. Invitations from local communities.
B. The survival threat to chimpanzees.
C. Her desire to speak out before the public.
D. Her wish to promote the value of her study.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Breaking Discovery: Chimpanzees’ Use of Tools
B. Jane Goodall: A Lifelong Fighter for Chimpanzees
C. The Unexpected Embrace: A Change in Jane’s Life
D. From Scientist to Activist: Jane’s Fight for Animals

Tsunamis are huge waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. They can travel as fast as a jet plane (644 km/h) across the ocean, but you can hardly see them in deep water. This made it hard for scientists to warn people in time, until NASA created a disaster alert system called Guardian.
In July 2025, a strong earthquake hit near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Minutes later, alarms rang across the Pacific, and millions were ordered to leave their homes. What made this event historic was Guardian’s response: Using artificial intelligence and satellite signals, it detected (测出) the tsunami just 20 minutes after the quake, warning Hawaii 30-40 minutes before waves arrived. Though the 1.7-meter waves caused only minor flooding, the system proved its value.
How does Guardian work? When a tsunami moves large amounts of water up and down, it disturbs the air high above Earth. This air layer, called the ionosphere (电离层), has tiny charged particles (微粒). The disturbance changes the number of these particles, which slows down signals from navigation satellites. By measuring the slowdown, Guardian spots tsunamis in near real time.
Guardian is better than old tools. It not only gives more complete and faster information, but also helps detect volcanoes and nuclear tests. But it’s not perfect. If a tsunami starts close to a coast, Guardian can’t warn people fast enough. For communities near the center of quake, the ionosphere’s 10-to-30-minute response (反应) time is too slow. But for distant areas, like those hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 228,000 people, Guardian could save countless lives.
As Europe develops its own similar system and Guardian gets upgraded to predict wave size and landfall time, the future of tsunami warning looks brighter. This breakthrough reminds us that innovation often comes from thinking beyond old tools, turning changes of satellite signals into a lifeline for coastal people.
8. Why was the 2025 tsunami special?
A. It spread throughout the Pacific Ocean.
B. Many people had to leave their homes.
C. It was caused by a powerful earthquake.
D. Early warnings were sent before it arrived.
9. How does Guardian detect tsunamis?
A. By making use of traditional ocean tools.
B. By counting the number of charged particles.
C. By observing the size of waves in deep water.
D. By measuring the slowdown of satellite signals.
10. In what situation can Guardian be more effective to save lives?
A. When a tsunami spreads fast.
B When a tsunami is huge enough.
C. When a tsunami hits the distant areas.
D. When a tsunami starts all of a sudden.
11. What will Guardian probably do in the future?
A. It will be equipped with new satellites.
B. It will be replaced by new warning systems.
C. It will be improved to carry out more tasks.
D. It will prevent tsunamis from getting serious.
D
Exams are nerve-racking. The silence of the hall; the ticking of the clock, it is not surprising that anxious test-takers often perform worse than others. Yet recent research in Psychological Science by Maria Theobald at the Leibniz Institute and her workmates suggests that it is not the pressure of the exam hall which causes the problem. It is the pressure of revision.
Dr Theobald supposed that if anxiety limited students’ ability to apply known information, highly anxious students would perform worse in real exams than in mocks (模拟考试) or online practice.
She therefore worked with 309 German medical students who were preparing for their final state exam. This test includes 230 questions divided into three five-hour periods over three days.
During the 100 days before the actual papers, all her volunteers used a digital-learning platform which presented them with old exam questions and recorded their performance. They also took a mock exam 40 days ahead. To assess their levels of anxiety, the research team asked the volunteers to rate their anxiety on a five-point scale in the run up to the real exam and on the day of that exam.
Unexpectedly, anxiety on the test day did not predict exam performance at all. What did predict it was the level of knowledge a student displayed in the mock exam and the earlier digital-learning activities. Those who performed well in these also did well in the real exam, regardless of how anxious they were on the day, because the greater a student’s anxiety in the days before the exam, the lower his or her knowledge-gain was during that period, leaving that student with less material to reproduce during the exam itself.
This is a positive discovery, for it suggests a change of approach to revision by the anxious test-takers might help improve their results. To reduce the anxiety, Dr Theobald proposes a two-fold strategy for students as they review. First, they can raise their belief in their own abilities by reminding themselves of just how much they know. Second, they can diminish the significance of the test by reminding themselves that, while it is important, it is not a life or death situation. It really isn’t.
12. What is the key finding of Dr Theobald’s research?
A. Anxious students hate taking exams.
B. Real exam pressure causes poor scores.
C. Pressure of revision affects exam results.
D. Mocks are more difficult than real exams.
13. What did the volunteers do in the research?
A. They answered old exam questions online.
B. They had a mock 100 days before the exam.
C. They used a digital platform to reduce anxiety.
D. They took a five-hour exam every three days.
14. What does the underlined word “diminish” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Weaken. B. Stress. C. Ignore. D. Prove.
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Taking an exam has a lifelong influence on students.
B. Practicing exam-taking skills in revision is important.
C. Building confidence can make a difference in an exam.
D. Developing a good memory can reduce students’ anxiety.

Chinese English has a long history and keeps developing with time. As early as the 17th century, English came to China with British businessmen. In the 18th century, Guangzhou became the birthplace of “Canton English”, which later developed into pidgin English. ____16____
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, English localization took two paths: one was unstandardized Chinglish, and the other was Chinese English—standard expressions for unique Chinese things. The Internet age has brought new types of Chinese English.
____17____ First, they are simple in form, like “gelibility” (meaning “reliable”) and “emo” (a mood of sadness). Second, they sound catchy, such as “no zuo no die” (if you don’t seek trouble, trouble won’t find you). Third, they have rich meanings, like “people mountain people sea” (describing a big crowd). These features make new Chinese English a useful tool in cross-cultural communication.
Chinese English has changed from being criticized to gaining international recognition. ____18____ Words like “Paper Tiger” and “Loong” (the Chinese dragon) have enriched the English vocabulary. Meanwhile, Chinese English helps spread Chinese culture in areas like diplomacy, society, food, and literature, boosting China’s international voice.
____19____ On one hand, we should view Chinese English with tolerance and reason. It shows the vitality of language mixing. On the other hand, in international occasions, we need to use standard and accurate English to build China’s discourse system and show a good national image.
Language learning and teaching should also keep up with this change. ____20____ Instead of just correcting “mistakes”, it’s more important to help students understand the cultural meanings behind the language and pass on cross-cultural feelings.
A. Chinese English has many attractive features.
B. In fact, some have even entered global English.
C. Therefore, we need a balanced view of Chinese English.
D. This process of development reflects cultural exchanges.
E. It’s not just about language rules but cultural communication.
F. It mixed English words with Chinese grammar and pronunciation.
G. Thus, more foreigners are interested in Chinese culture through it.

Internet Makes Travel Easier
The Internet has greatly simplified my travel experiences. Last summer, I planned a trip to Xi’an entirely online. Using apps, I booked train tickets, reserved a hotel near the Bell Tower, and even bought entrance tickets to the Terracotta Warriors Museum in advance. What’s more, real-time navigation helped me avoid traffic jams, and online reviews guided me to authentic local restaurants.
However, to make the most of digital tools, I’d like to offer two suggestions. First, always double-check information from official sources, as some websites may provide outdated details. Second, don’t rely solely on your phone — download offline maps and keep emergency contacts saved in case of poor network.
Thanks to the Internet, traveling is not only easier but also more enjoyable!
