Inside the hall, the door was shut and the key was on the glass stand. Poor Alice was only about one foot tall after taking some drink. She found a cake on the floor, went up and ate it all quickly.
“How strange! How tall I am now!” Alice said. She looked down at her feet—they seemed so far away. In fact, she was over nine feet tall now, which meant she still couldn’t get through the door. She sat down and cried hard until a big pool of tears formed around her.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps nearby. It was the Rabbit coming back, holding a fan in his hand. Alice really needed help, so when he came close, she called out, “Excuse me, sir…” The Rabbit jumped in surprise, dropped the fan and ran away.
Alice picked up the fan and as the hall was hot, she fanned herself. “Dear, dear! How strange all things are today! I do wish to get out of the hall! ________ ” she said.
Then she noticed herself in the glass—she was now no more than two feet tall and still shrinking very fast. That was the fan! She realized this and dropped the fan at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon.
Alice was in a sad fear at the quick change. “Things are getting worse,” the poor girl said. “I was never so small as this. How can I get out?” As she said, she lost her footsteps and was up to her chin (下巴) in salt water—her own tears.
Just then, Alice saw a mouse swimming toward her.
“Maybe talking to this mouse will help? Everything is so strange here. I think it might be able to talk. At least it can’t hurt to try.” So she swam over to it.

Keju, the earliest Gaokao, began in the Sui dynasty, developed in the Tang and Song Dynasty, and ended in the Qing Dynasty. It played an important role in choosing excellent people to work for the country—even a poor farmer’s son could change his life through Keju.
The Keju exams were mainly about classical literature, like the works of Confucius. In early years, poetry was a must-test part; students had to write poems with strict rhyme rules. Later, more attention was paid to essay writing, where they needed to discuss how to govern the country.
Held once every three years, the exam had 4 levels: the County Exam, the Provincial Exam, the Metropolitan Exam, and the Palace Exam. Students had to pass the lowest level first to take part in the higher ones. Each exam lasted 1 to 3 days. Imagine sitting in a small, closed room called an “exam cell” for days-no talking, no leaving, just writing! Most students had to walk to the capital with books and food in small wooden boxes, taking months to get there. On exam day, guards checked their clothes and bags carefully to stop cheating-they even searched for hidden notes, just like today’s Gaokao checks.
Different titles were given to those who passed different levels of the exam. Xiucai for the county level, Juren for the provincial, Gongshi for the metropolitan, and Jinshi for the palace exam. The top three Jinshi were called Zhuangyuan, Bangyan, and Tanhua. The emperor would give all Jinshi jobs, like working in the government. So competition was fierce-sometimes only 1 out of 100 students passed the highest level The Keju helped ancient China choose excellent people. Though it ended over a century ago, it still shows how important fair exams are for a country.
28. When did Keju finally end in China?
A. In the Sui Dynasty. B. In the Qing Dynasty.
C. In the Song Dynasty. D. In the Tang Dynasty.
29. Which of the following was a must-test part in the early Keju exams?
A. Drawing pictures of Confucius. B. Writing poems with strict rhyme rules.
C. Writing essays about the country. D. Discussing how to govern the country.
30. How often was the Keju held?
A. Once a year B. Once every two years
C. Once every three years D. Once every four years
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Life of Ancient Chinese Students
B. A Fair Exam That Changed Lives
C. The Ways to Become a Zhuangyuan in Keju
D. Poetry Rules in Ancient China

It’s fun to visit the monkeys at the zoo and watch them play and climb. We laugh at how cute they are and talk about how much they seem like us. But in some cities, monkeys and people live together—and it isn’t fun at all.
In New Delhi, India, thousands of small monkeys live in the city. They steal food from street stores, break into people’s houses and make a mess. Sometimes they even bite (咬) people, stop the electricity and break Internet services. Every year the city gets bigger and more forests are cut down. The monkeys have no wild places to live in anymore. Now they are used to living in the city. This is a big problem!
The government has tried many ways to keep monkeys away. Workers catch monkeys and take them to wild areas far from the city. To stop the monkeys from coming back for food, trucks bring food to them there. But those wild areas are not big enough for all the monkeys. Recently, the city also tried using paper tigers and recorded sounds to scare them away. However, the monkeys quickly learn these are not real.
The problem won’t be solved easily. Most people like monkeys and don’t want to hurt them, but they don’t want monkeys in their homes, either. The monkeys probably feel the same way about us. No matter what way we try, one thing is clear: if we don’t protect wild animals’ homes, they may have to live in ours.
32. Which is a problem caused by monkeys in New Delhi?
A. Making the zoo a mess. B. Breaking into people’s homes.
C. Stealing food from trucks. D. Causing harm to other animals.
33. Why is it difficult to keep monkeys away in the city?
①Because monkeys refuse to eat provided food.
②Because monkey catchers cannot catch them all.
③Because the wild areas cannot hold so many monkeys.
④Because paper tigers and recorded sounds don’t always work.
A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ③④ D. ②③
34. Which of the following is TRUE about Paragraph 4?
A. People don’t care about the monkeys living around them.
B. The government has found the best way to control monkeys.
C. Monkeys are happy to share their living space with humans.
D. Protecting monkeys’ natural homes may stop them from living in cities.
35. Where would you most probably find this passage?
A. In a storybook. B. On a zoo website.
C. In a wildlife magazine. D. In a guidebook.

From a young age, we were taught that if we wanted to be successful, we had to study hard and get good grades at school. But in fact, the success isn’t just about school grades. Why is it like this?
In some parents’ eyes, school grades are the most important thing for their kids. But in truth, there are many other important things besides school lessons. For example, how to be a happy person, how to keep healthy, and how to get on well with others. This means that school alone is not enough if you want to live a great life.
Doing well at school is a great start for life, but it isn’t the only way to succeed. Many skills and hobbies outside of textbooks also play a big role in our growth. Being good at sports can make us strong and teach us the spirit of teamwork. Having a talent for music can help us relax and express our feelings better. Even skills like planting vegetables or fixing small things can make our life more colorful and useful. These abilities don’t show up on our test papers, but they can help us solve many problems in daily life and make us more confident.
Life is really a long lesson-so you can’t judge a person’s success by just one part of it. If you have already finished school, keep learning. What you learned at school will never be enough for a happy life. If you are still studying, whether you are good or bad at school, don’t take your grades too seriously as long as you have tried your best. Keep learning to make your abilities better and better. That’s the way to live a happy and successful life.

Life as a student can be full of pressure. You might feel stressed about exams, schoolwork or friendships. This stress can make you feel worried. Learning how to deal with this feeling is an important skill for everyone.
Lisa, a 13-year-old student, used to feel very nervous before every test. But now, when she feels worried, she closes her eyes, breathes in slowly for four seconds, holds her breath for four seconds, and then breathes out slowly for six seconds.
What Lisa does is called mindfulness (正念). You can pay attention to the present moment (当下) instead of worrying about the past or future. This way, you can face challenges with a calm heart. By paying attention to your breathing or the sounds around you, you can calm the busy thoughts in your head.
Some people might think this is a waste of time. However, a university study shows that students who feel nervous before exams usually can’t get good grades. But when these students practice mindfulness for ten minutes every day, they do better. Why? Because they are not so worried about their exams anymore. Instead, they just try their best.
So, how can you practice it? You can start by finding a quiet place to sit comfortably and focus on your breath. You can also listen to soft music or take a walk outside. Remember, it’s all about giving your busy brain a short, relaxing break.
Stressful school life can make you worried. To deal with the feeling, you can ____50____. It helps you focus on the present moment so that you can ____51____ in front of challenges.

C. The Ways to Become a Zhuangyuan in Keju

A. Making the zoo a mess. B. Breaking into people’s homes.
C. Stealing food from trucks. D. Causing harm to other animals.

A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ③④ D. ②③
