Food—its finding, collecting, saving and cooking—has always been a “THING” in my family.
We had a food bank called the “Cold Room” when I was a child. My dad built it with great care, just like everything else he did. It was a small room, with a big fridge, usually filled with a side of beef, a whole pig, chicken, and different treats.
But the best was the homemade vegetable boxes for the long winter. My dad stored them in a material that we later found out was bad for our health. I often wonder how much of the bad dust I breathed in while digging for the last carrot or potato in the spring.
August was the busiest time of the year when the garden produced the most food. As the eldest child, I hated August because I always had to pick and prepare everything. There was always something to clean or peel. And they always had boxes of fruits brought to me to fill our food bottles. Seeds for carrots, tomatoes and lettuce were kept by me, year to year.
Later, I realized that this whole “food obsession” was because my dad had known childhood hunger. His family was very poor. Children were sent to the market to beg for food. My dad decided that his own family would never face the hunger he once had. So he liked to store food his whole life.
A few summers ago, a visitor asked me, “Do you always have that much food in your fridge?” I was surprised but answered, “Yes, always.” Now, it’s August again. My fridge is full of fresh local produce. I’ll be thinking of these fruits and vegetables during the cold winter months.
The apple hasn’t fallen far from the family tree. My habit of storing food was similar to my father’s. In fact, it has probably grown into a few roots.
31. What does the “Cold Room” stand for in the writer’s memory?
A. A sign of the busiest season. B. A symbol of careful planning.
C. A turning point of childhood fun. D. A place of family togetherness.
32. What problem did the homemade vegetable boxes have?
A. They were too small to store vegetables.
B. They let in too much cold air in the winters.
C. The vegetables inside them had gone bad by spring.
D. The material made into them turned out to be dangerous.
33. What does the underlined word “obsession” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Love. B. Memory. C. Safety. D. Service.
34. Which saying has the same meaning as the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Easy come, easy go.
C. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. D. Like father, like son.
35. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Tradition Born From Hunger B. Food Stored by Family
C. Lesson Learned in “Cold Room” D. Fridge Filled With Memories
C
Is there a way to quickly recall information just before taking an exam? Walking backward might help. Scientists from a university in the UK said this activity can help improve short-term memory.
In research, researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video. After watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. One group was told to walk 10 meters forward. The second group walked 10 meters backward. The third group stood in one place. All three groups were then asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video. The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers correct on average (平均) than the other two groups.
This suggests that the link between time and space is important for how our minds form memories. “Time is really expressed through space,” One researcher told the Daily Mail. When you walk backward, you see things from a different angle (角度). This difference helps people bring things to mind that happened in the past.
Walking backward could also be helpful for those who often have pain in their knees, according to another team of researchers. They found backward walking keeps our spine (脊柱) strong, which helps to reduce pain in the lower back. Besides, walking backward is also good for the rest of our body. It burns more calories than forward walking, according to New Scientist. This might be why many people like walking backward. Yet, to walk backward safely is an art to be learned.
36. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The reason for memory improvement.
B. The purpose of doing a research.
C. A scientific finding about walking backward.
D. A common problem before exams.
37. According to paragraph 2, what did the volunteers do first?
A. They watched a video. B. They were divided into groups.
C. They answered 20 questions. D. They walked 10 meters forward.
38. How does walking backward help people?
A. It can help people see things more clearly.
B. It may help solve health problems completely.
C. It may be the best exercise for improving memory.
D. It can reduce people’s pain in knees and the lower back.
39. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards backward walking?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uncertain. D. Worried.
40. What will the writer probably discuss in the next paragraph?
A. Bad influence of walking backward.
B. Advice on walking backward safely.
C. More ways to improve short-term memory.
D. History of backward walking studies.

A. A sign of the busiest season. B. A symbol of careful planning.

A. They were too small to store vegetables.
B. They let in too much cold air in the winters.
C. The vegetables inside them had gone bad by spring.

33. What does the underlined word “obsession” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Love. B. Memory. C. Safety. D. Service.

A. They watched a video. B. They were divided into groups.
C. They answered 20 questions. D. They walked 10 meters forward.
