Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked.
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch like a seat. Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind roared (咆哮) around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed pretty worried. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind-or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words. Martha left the room quickly.
When Martha left her alone, Mary decided to explore the house. She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house she heard it again. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

How did the Maya count in ancient times? How many bags of corn did they have? How many did they sell? Did all the crops arrive at the city market? To answer these important daily questions, they used some numbers like this:
The Maya were good at math. They counted in groups of 20, not 10. They wrote numbers in 6 columns (纵行) going up. The bottom row was the “1s” column, the next row up was 20s, then 400s, and so on. For numbers, they used a dot (●) for 1, a line () for 5, and a shell shape to show zero. Numbers 1 to 19 were written with lines and dots. Can you read the number in the following picture? It’s the number 1209 (three 400s+ no 20s+ nine 1s).
The Maya also kept three different calendars. In the first calendar, there were 18 months of 20 days each, and a short month of 5 days in a year. The short month wasn’t believed to be lucky, a time when spirits walked. The second calendar repeated every 260 days. This was used to plan religious (宗教) activities. When talking about events that happened long ago, they used a calendar called “the long count.” This had a span (跨度) of about 5,136 years. In 2012, a “Great Cycle” of its “Long Count” came to an end, so some people believed that the world would end on December 21, 2012. Of course, it didn’t come true.
Each city and village had a calendar keeper who told people when to celebrate holidays and when to expect rain or plant crops. But farmers could also tell the time of the year from the sun and stars.
28. The Maya created their way of counting mainly to ________.
A. celebrate holidays B. plan religious activities
C. keep different calendars D. solve everyday problems
29. According to Maya math, the number in Picture ________ is equal to 414.
A. B. C. D.
30. In the first-calendar, there were ________ days in a year.
A. 365 B. 260 C. 5,136 D. 360
31. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. The use of Maya numbers and calendars nowadays.
B. The development of numbers and calendars in Maya.
C. The introduction of the Maya numbers and calendars.
D. The difference between numbers in Maya and other places.
32. Where can we probably read the text?
A. In a book of travel tips. B. In a guidebook on calendar making.
C. In a math textbook. D. In a magazine about Maya cultures.

①Teenagers often find pimples pop up on their faces. These unwelcome trouble-makers seem to appear out of nowhere, especially before important events, like taking class photos or speaking on stage. Why are teenagers likely to have acne?
②One of the main reasons is the big change in their hormone levels (荷尔蒙水平). A study in 2024 by Professor Yao Xu’s team in “Cell Host & Microbe” showed that the change in hormone levels makes sebaceous glands (皮脂腺) produce too much oil. Some bacteria (细菌) use the extra oil to multiply, causing skin problems. And then acne appears.
③Bad habits are also a cause of acne. One of these habits is staying up late, which will harm skin metabolism (新陈代谢). An experiment found teens who go to bed late for a week had more oil and 30% more acne.
④What’s more, eating too much high-sugar and high-fat food is another bad habit. For example, a boy eating fried chicken over five times a week has a 40% higher risk of acne than those who eat healthily.
⑤Pimples bring a lot of problems to teens’ minds and social life. They may feel less confident as they care about their looks. In class, some of them can’t listen to the teachers carefully. These teenagers might be shy and afraid to talk in public.
⑥Here is some advice for students with acne problems.
⑦First, take care of your skin. Use gentle cleansers in the morning and at night.
⑧Next, sleep 7 to 8 hours every night. Eat more fruit, vegetables and grains. Eat less junk food to control oil.
⑨Finally, don’t worry too much. Pimples are normal for teens. Be happy and do some sports like running, rope skipping and so on. You can surely “live in peace” with acne.
33. In the passage, the underlined word “multiply” most likely means ________.
A. to increase greatly in number B. to change the size of it
C. to mix together with other things D. to become more difficult
34. How does the writer support the idea that bad habits cause acne?
A. By showing a study in 2024. B. By comparing different things.
C. By telling an interesting story. D. By giving different examples.
35. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. B.
C. D.
36. What’s the writing purpose (目的) of this passage?
A. To introduce some good skin cleansers.
B. To encourage teenagers to be confident.
C. To help teenagers know more about pimples.
D. To introduce some important studies on pimples

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends, “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is an acquaintance (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears (恐惧), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong. They will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose (故意地) to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest and best friends. We should value (重视) all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

例文:
Hello everyone,
Chinese New Year is coming. It’s time to say goodbye to the old year and hello to a new one.
Last year, the most important thing I did was volunteering at our community library. It taught me the joy of helping others. For 2026, my New Year’s resolutions are to read twenty books, improve my English speaking skills, and exercise three times a week.
To keep these resolutions, I will make a weekly reading plan, practice English with friends every day, and join a morning running group. I believe small, daily efforts will lead to success.
Thank you.
