As April 18 marks the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day, we’ve selected four archaeological (考古的) sites in China that deserve exploration.
Zhoukoudian, Beijing
Zhoukoudian, a UNESCO heritage site located 50 km from downtown Beijing, has been a significant site. At various parts of the site, scientists have unearthed the remains of early human “Peking Man” that date back more than 500,000 years, as well as of “Shandingdong Man”, who lived 30,000 years ago.
Sanxingdui Ruins site, Sichuan province
As one of the greatest archeological finds of the 20th century, the Sanxingdui Ruins are believed to be the remains of the Shu Kingdom, dating back at least 4,800 years and lasting over 2,000 years.
The ruins are located in Guanghan city in Southwest China’s Sichuan province, covering 12 square kilometers.
The Yinxu Ruins, Henan province
The Yinxu Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Anyang city, Henan province, was an ancient capital of the Shang Dynasty (16th century BC-11th century BC).
Spreading across over 30 square kilometers, the site features the greatest number of oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文) discovered so far in the world.
The Daming Palace, Shaanxi province
Famous for its super-large scale and magnificent buildings, Daming Palace was the main royal palace in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) where Tang emperors lived and dealt with state affairs.
Covering 3.2 square kilometers, it fully demonstrates the majestic style of grand architecture during the Tang empire.

Sometimes a book comes along that isn’t just “interesting” or “well done”— it’s a book where it seems like the author looked into your brain and wrote a book specifically for you. A book like that for me was released this week. It’s called 100 Things We’ve Lost to the Internet, written by editor Pamela Paul.
Paul lists 100 things we used to do that the Internet has either changed or taken over completely: writing letters, print newspapers, the joys of being bored, and not having all the knowledge in the world in your pocket.
As I’m a longtime accumulator of random knowledge, certain entries on the list—Being the Only One, Figuring Out Who That Actor is—hit me where live; remembering detailed facts is no longer nearly as impressive when everyone has the capability to find the answer in seconds.
On and on the list goes, with every minor shift adding to the pile. What this book does so well is illustrate the growth of that pile; while any individual item might be no big deal, the collected set is significant. It’s a list of ways in which the world now is different from the world then.
Obviously, Paul isn’t saying that everything back then was better. Time marches on, after all. and it’s tough to argue against the many benefits that the Internet has brought into our lives. But that isn’t really the point. It’s not about whether it used to be better. It’s that it used to be different.
100 Things We’ve Lost to the Internet is a fun read for those of us who share some of Paul’s memories and experiences. We remember what it was like and we like to remember. The landscape has shifted, and no doubt it will shift again as technology’s advancement continues apace. This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.
16. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To review and recommend a good read.
B. To comment on the effect of the Internet.
C. To argue for the viewpoint of a new book.
D. To urge the readers to value what they have.
17. Which might be entries on Paul’s list?
A. Maps and Eye Contact.
B. E-pay and Compact Disks.
C. Postcards and Homeschooling
D. Bad Photos and Washing Machines.
18. What does the underlined phrase “hit me where l live” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Prove what I’m good at.
B. Introduce how I grew up.
C. Describe the place I live in.
D. Speak out what is on my mind.
19. What conclusion has the author drawn after reading Paul’s book?
A. Things in the past are better.
B. There’re no gains without pains.
C. The internet is a double-edged sword.
D. Technology is constantly changing the world.
C
We often imagine conservation unfolding in wild, remote landscapes, not in the middle of bustling cities. But look a little closer and a different story emerges. On rooftops, in alleyways and through the tiniest cracks in the pavement, biodiversity is finding its way back in the heart of metropolis.
Nathalie Pettorelli of the Zoological Society of London argues that cities are ecosystems in their own right. “If you accept the city is an ecosystem,” she says, “the question then becomes: How do you make this ecosystem more biodiverse?”
Obviously, connectivity is one answer. In the UK, initiatives such as Hedgehog (刺猬) Street encourage neighbours to link their gardens through small fence holes to allow free movement. Utrecht in the Netherlands has sewn together more than 120km of wildflower strips, providing continuous habitat for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. A bee highway in Oslo, Norway, weaves through rooftops, parks and balconies to offer pollinators safe passage around the urban maze.
Wildlife bridges are another powerful tool for connecting habitats. The Netherlands is well known for pioneering “ecoduets” — green overpasses that allow animals such as deer, boar and badgers to safely cross busy highways. California is currently completing the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, which will span an expansive 10 lanes of traffic and reconnect a fragmented mountain lion population that was cut off by the freeway.
Even the most ordinary city surfaces can be recruited. Nature-positive architecture is the growing trend: rooftops that store rainwater and shelter swifts, walls covered with plants that cool streets and feed insects, etc. By turning hard surface into micro-habitats, it not only minimises impact on the environment but actively restore and enhances biodiversity, providing shelter, food and connectivity for wildlife.
Emma Marris, author of Rambunctious Garden: Saving Nature in a Post-Wild World, is delighted to see that some of the best urban nature is accidental and wildlife is making a comeback where it has the space to do so. “Such as spontaneous plants colonising flood zones, birds nesting in signboards... ” she says.
Whether you’re planting native plants on a shed roof or just leaving a patch of garden untidy, there’s space for everyone in the future wild city. Nature doesn’t need perfection — it just needs opportunity.
20. What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To point out a problem. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To present a phenomenon. D. To question the previous view.
21. Which initiative serves as a way to create connectivity for insects m urban areas?
A. Wildflower strips in Utrecht. B. Hedgehog Street in the UK.
C. Ecoducts in the Netherlands. D. The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing.
22. Which type of urban nature may Emma Marris appreciate?
A. Clean green spaces for chosen species.
B. Planned wildlife bridges across habitats.
C. Natural wildlife return in available spaces.
D. Designed native flowerbeds for pollinators.
23. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Every city garden must be kept clean to attract diverse wildlife.
B. Nature-positive architecture is a promising but impractical approach.
C. Urban biodiversity can be boosted through creative human-intervention.
D. Conservation efforts should focus on remote wilderness rather than cities.
D
“If I could talk to the animals, just imagine it, chatting to a chimp (黑猩猩) in its language,” sang the actor Rex Harrison in the 1967 movie Doctor Dolittle. “Imagine talking to a tiger, chatting to a lion. What a great achievement that would be!” Talking to animals may have seemed like a dream in the 1960s, but it may soon become possible thanks to AI (人工智能).
The sounds that animals make to communicate with each other have rules that other members of their species understand, but these rules are hard for humans to identify. However, AI is very good at finding rules if it is given enough data. And because AI can sort through millions of sounds to find such rules, many scientists believe AI may soon help us understand what animals are saying.
Scientists have a project called CETI. They use AI to study the sounds of sperm whale (抹香鲸). They already know that these whales use clicks to identify each other, and that groups of whales even have their own special sounds. The CETI researchers have trained a machine language program on a database of whale sounds, and they are now trying to match the sounds the AI has identified with whale behavior. They believe they will be able to translate the language of sperm whales as soon as 2026.
Some people believe that understanding the language of animals will change how we see our relationship with the natural world, and may encourage greater protection efforts. But in the meantime, it seems some animals might already want to talk to us! Some whales have been recorded blowing large bubble (气泡) rings in water during meeting with humans. And a study of these meetings suggests that the whales may be trying to use the bubbles to communicate with us!
24. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By telling a historic story. B. By providing research results.
C. By explaining animal languages. D. By using a movie song.
25. Why is AI helpful for people to understand animal sounds?
A. It can create new animal languages. B. It can find rules from many sounds.
C. It can directly translate animal languages. D. It can copy the sounds made by animals.
26. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Whales mainly use bubbles to communicate.
B. People can surely live in harmony with animals.
C. Understanding animal languages may protect nature.
D. More projects will be carried out to study animal sounds.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. AI May Soon Help Us Talk to Animals
B. How Whales Communicate with Humans
C. How We Protect Animals Through Technology
D. CETI Has Uncovered the Mystery of Whale Sounds
第二节 阅读填空 (5*2.5, 满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Can a machine ever hold a full human mind? Humans are capable of making decisions by themselves without input from others, and they can learn from experience. ____28____ The question is whether machines can ever really think in all these aspects.
The idea of a computer that is all-powerful and can think and make decisions for itself terrifies many people. In some films, AI even decides that all humans must be killed. ____29____ Others are comforted by the thought that maybe with AI, robots can be made to replace loved ones who have died. Both dreams imagine robots already owning real sorrow, joy, or conscience — feelings no existing machine actually has.
____30____ The computer only wins with clear rules and huge data. It learns from our clicks and commands. Yet today’s AI already beats humans in many areas. AI is already being used with great success in Internet search engines and as a personal assistant in our smartphones. ____31____ Researchers are also testing AI in driverless cars that sense surroundings and choose the best route. All these achievements are only possible when AI stays connected to hard facts and vast data. Until that all-thinking machine arrives, today’s AI stays a narrow, data-tied helper.
Do you think that research can one day link memory, language, feeling, and open self-modelling into one united, self-centred machine? If so, is there really a difference between AI and a human? Before all these unknowns are solved, the difference stays clear: ____32____
A. AI’s sharp, adaptive mind quietly makes life smoother.
B. It is also used to diagnose problems and suggest solutions.
C. It reads X-rays quickly, but cannot understand a patient’s worry.
D. Many people are also concerned that AI will be used to replace humans.
E. The creation of an all-powerful computer capable of human thought is still in progress.
F. Humans dream first, then build; machines only mirror whatever is placed in front of them.
G. In addition, humans are able to create things from their own inspiration for their own pleasure.

Wild Animal Protection Month Activities Held in Our School
November is Wild Animal Protection Month, and our school held a series of themed activities across three campuses in 2025 to raise students’ awareness. Various activities were organized, such as informative lectures by wildlife experts, poster design competitions with protection themes, and documentary watching sessions about endangered animals.
These activities were a great success. Students actively participated in all events, sharing their ideas on animal protection and making practical promises. They said they had gained more knowledge and would take action to protect wild animals and their habitats, making the activities truly meaningful.
