Classical Chinese gardens are purposely designed so that no matter where you stand, you can never see the whole thing at once. The mystery and the discovery have helped the classical gardens of China, especially those in Suzhou, remain popular attractions after all these years.
Put simply, the aim of a classical Chinese garden is to deepen one’s admiration of nature. Besides just relaxing in nature, the classical Chinese gardens have another purpose—to inspire artistic expression like poetry, literature or painting. Nearly all Chinese gardens feature the things in the list below.
Water
Water is a necessary thing that no Chinese garden can go without. The water in a garden typically symbolizes a lake or even the ocean. Water can even symbolize communication, movement and dreams.
Rocks
Large rocks typically symbolize mountains. Many of the rocks in the Suzhou gardens come from Lake Tai, having been shaped by the flow of water over thousands of years. Smaller rocks are often on show in the fancy halls at a garden’s entrance. This shows the appreciation the garden owners had of these rocks.
Plants
You can’t have a garden without plants. Different plants and flowers are used for either symbolic or aesthetic (美学的) purpose—or both. Bamboo, for example, represents strength. Flowers, meanwhile, add color to a garden, with each carrying a symbolic meaning of its own.
Gates & Windows
Gates of different shapes divide different parts of a garden. The most common type of gate, the moon gate, is simply a circle. Windows are placed throughout the garden to allow the passage of light. You can also catch a glimpse of interesting trees or rocks on the other side from the window.
Pavilions (亭)
In Chinese gardens, pavilions are usually placed in some of the best viewing places. Sometimes a pavilion is placed where one can see the reflection (倒影) of the moon at night, or in the best place to listen to the sound of rain on the leaves above. In the past, pavilions were also used as places for garden owners to reflect, paint and write poems.
29. What does the underlined word “those” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Plants. B. Paintings. C. Classical gardens. D. Mystery and discovery.
30. What’s the purpose of this text?
A. To list some plants and flowers. B. To introduce classical Chinese gardens.
C. To explain the history of classical gardens. D. To compare different classical gardens in China.
31. Which of the following best explains “glimpse” underlined in paragraph 6?
A. Look. B. Visit. C. Guess. D. Feeling.
32. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Nature Speaks for Itself B. Chinese Gardens and Western Gardens
C. Getting Lost in Classical Chinese Gardens D. Finding Ways to Modern Arts and Buildings
C
In many cases, you may find yourself or somebody faking (假笑) a smile in photos. Why can one easily discover a fake smile and why does it seem so difficult to give a real smile in photos?
Scientists have found that a real smile is featured by two main muscle (肌肉) movements. When we smile, we lift our mouth upwards and cause the skin around our eyes to gather into folds. These muscle movements are usually absent in the case of a forced smile, especially when the smile is small. Our brains are highly skilled at telling the differences in muscle movements. That’s why though trying to fake a real smile can be hard, discovering it on someone else is a piece of cake.
One of the most common reasons why you look unnatural in photos is an increased awareness (意识) of your appearance. The worry about posture, hair, and makeup can add to the stress, killing the chances of a real smile. A smile looks best when it comes naturally. Warm and welcoming smiles come along with warm and welcoming body language, but when you’re in front of the camera, trying too hard to perform can make your body language appear stiff (僵硬的) and far from welcoming.
Besides, facial expressions are not always understood in the same way. A smile can mean differently in different cultures. For example, a wide smile that seems welcoming to some may appear fake and dishonest. This may also influence how people feel about your smile in photos.
However, we shouldn’t let this trouble us too much. So, if you want to smile naturally before the camera, perhaps the simplest trick is to give your brain a real reason to feel happy.
Maybe recall a joyful moment or just think back to a funny story you read… that should work!
33. How does the writer begin the article?
A. By asking questions. B. By giving examples. C. By listing numbers. D. By telling stories.
34. What is a real smile connected with?
A. Personal characters. B. Educational backgrounds.
C. Muscle movements. D. Professional achievements.
35. What is a reason for people’s unnatural smiles?
A. They fail to hide their feelings. B. They are tired of taking photos.
C. They care too much about their looks. D. They are weak in performing tricks.
36. What may help you give a real smile according to the writer?
A. Recalling a strange story. B. Practicing smiles in the mirror.
C. Improving your expression abilities. D. Thinking of a humorous moment.

Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Men had found gold in the Yukon, and these men wanted big, strong dogs to work in the cold and snow of the north.
Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara valley. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was chief dog; he was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons, and walking around with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.
But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.
Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.
When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.
That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood.
“How much are they paying you for this?” he asked.
“I only get fifty dollars.”
“And the man who stole him—how much did he get?” asked the barman.
“A hundred. He wouldn’t take less.”
“That makes a hundred and fifty. It’s a good price for a dog like him. Here help me to get him into this.”
They took off Buck’s rope and pushed him into a wooden box. He spent the night in the box in the back room of the bar. His neck still ached with pain from the rope, and he could not understand what it all meant. What did they want with him, these strange men? And where was Mr Miller?
The next day Buck was carried in the box to the railway station and put on a train to the north.
—Taken from The Call of the Wild

As many pet owners know, pets can make a person’s day bright and even provide comfort in difficult times. Now a survey has shown that owning pets is good for our mental (心理的) health. More than 2,000 American adults took part in the survey. Of these adults, 72% said they had pets. Dogs were the most common type of animal, followed by cats.
Among pet owners, 84% said their pets had mostly good influence on their mental health. About 64% said their pets provided love and support, while 62% said their pets provided a calming presence and lowered stress and anxiety. Dog and cat owners were especially likely to say their pets were good for their mental health.
“We see the powerful relationship between people and their animals,” said Rena Carlson, president of the AVMA. “From offering presence and love to lowering stress and worries, pets can give us comfort and support.”
A recent study by researchers in Australia got the same result. It found that having a dog led children to be more active because they walked and played with their pets. Girls who had a dog exercised 52 more minutes per day than those who didn’t.
However, pets can also cause worries to owners, especially when it comes to the animals’ health. More than half of pet owners were worried about their pets having health problems, growing older, or passing away. Many people also tried their best to arrange pet care when they travelled.
64. What animals were the second most common type of pets?
________________________________________
65. Why were children with a dog more active?
________________________________________
66. What else is good for our mental health besides (除了) owning pets? Why?

例文
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m writing to recommend Li Hua for this year’s Excellent League Member.
Li Hua is a 15-year-old student from Class 1, Grade 9. He has a talent for painting and is hard-working and friendly. He often helps classmates with their studies. In his free time, he enjoys traveling. He once visited Beijing and was deeply impressed by the Great Wall.
His personal idol is Yuan Longping, a rice scientist. Li Hua dreams of becoming an environmental scientist. He hopes to protect our planet, just like Yuan helped feed people. With his kindness and determination, I believe he fully deserves this honor.
