It does, however, have its own problem. Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing(摆动) and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass. Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says, According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour. However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step. As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might need to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper techniques, she says. It takes some practice. 4. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes? A. They must run long distances. B. They have to follow special rules. C. They are qualified for the marathon. D. They are good at swinging their legs. 5. What advantage does race walking have over running? A It’s less likely to cause knee injuries. B. It’s less challenging physically. C. It’s more effective in body building. D. It’s more popular at the Olympics. 6. What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking? A. Hiring an experienced coach. B. Having a medical checkup. C. Getting experts’ opinions. D. Doing regular exercises. 7. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking? A. Skeptical. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Disapproval. C If you want to succeed in life, you need to express the proper body language, with or without having to say anything else. You will certainly notice a whole new reaction from people if you use the power of body language. Relax your shoulders, keep your hands at your sides (never inside your pockets) and breathe slowly. Have a warm, welcoming facial expression as if you look forward to communicating. Depending on the situation, you may smile when appropriate. Face the other person or your audience and keep eye contact as much as possible throughout the talk. Nodding and tilting(倾斜) your head closer can show that you are listening. Do not fold your arms, look down at the floor or put your hands in your pockets. These can show that you are uninterested. If you have any comments, you can show them in negative but respectful ways like raising your eyebrows. A lot of your body language can show how confident, interested, bored, angry or nervous you are. Keeping your head up throughout the entire conversation can show that you are very much into the conversation at hand. You may feel free to use a few hand gestures to emphasize(强调) a point. If you’re enumerating things, it’s better to use each of your fingers as you mention each item to help your audience keep track. Pacing will help you create more ground if you have a larger crowd to communicate with. It will also show confidence on your part as you think of more things to say. Be very careful when touching the other person since you are crossing the boundaries of body language through actual contact. Remember that in body language, it is your body that does the talking for you. 8. According to the text, if you find a listener raising his eyebrows, he may ________. A. try to show his anger B. want to give his own opinion C. not understand what you say D. want to prove his confidence 9. The underlined word “enumerating” in Paragraph 6 may mean “________”. A. considering B. judging C. numbering D. discussing 10. What’s the author’s suggestion if you have a larger crowd to communicate with? A. To walk at a slow pace. B. To shake hands with every person. C. To look down at the floor. D. To fold your arms. 11. What is the most suitable title for the text? A. The Power of Body Language B. The Attraction of Body Language C. The Origin of Body Language D. The Understanding of Body Language D The debate over whether organic farming can feed the planet is no longer academic. According to the UN, food output must rise 50% by 2050, yet agriculture already emits 24% of global greenhouse gases. How to grow more while polluting less is the question. Organic farming, which bans most synthetic chemicals, is often portrayed as the green solution. A nine-year study by the Rodale Institute found that advanced organic plots increased soil carbon by 21% and used 45% less energy per tonne of grain than conventional fields. Healthier soil also traps water, cutting irrigation demand by 15% during drought years. “What we are seeing is a more resilient system,” says lead researcher Dr. Jennifer Newton. The main drawback is yield. Meta-analysis published in Nature shows organic fields produce on average 19% fewer tonnes of wheat or maize per hectare. Closing this gap is now the target of dozens of breeding programmes. New high-yield organic varieties have already narrowed the deficit to 8% in Swiss trials, but seeds cost 30% more. Waste offers another lever. The FAO estimates that 32% of all food produced is lost or thrown away. If consumer waste in rich countries were cut by just half, the calories saved would equal the entire organic shortfall projected for 2050. “We don’t need to choose between organic and conventional — we need to integrate both and stop wasting,” argues Newton. Such integration is emerging. In the Netherlands, “hybrid” farms plant organic cover crops to build soil, then apply carefully dosed mineral fertiliser at key growth stages. Early results show yields match fully conventional fields while carbon emissions fall 28%. The model is not perfect, but it suggests the future of farming may be neither purely organic nor purely chemical, but a pragmatic blend — provided consumers are willing to pay 5-7% more at the checkout. 12. What does the author imply is the central goal of organic farming in the passage? A. To achieve immediate maximum grain output at any cost. B. To build a resilient agricultural system that enhances ecological balance and soil health. C. To eliminate all mineral fertilizers worldwide by 2030. D. To convert forest land into high-yield organic fields. 13. What can be inferred if rich countries halved their consumer food waste, according to the FAO data cited? A. Organic farming would become obsolete overnight. B. The calories saved could offset the projected organic yield shortfall for 2050. C. Global agricultural emissions would drop to zero. D. Mineral fertilizer prices would fall by 30%. 14. Which hybrid practice is being tested in Dutch farms? A. Planting organic cover crops plus targeted mineral fertilizer. B. Using only recycled water for irrigation. C. Growing genetically modified crops without chemicals. D. Eliminating all mechanised harvesting. 15. Which best describes the author’s tone toward the future of farming? A. Hopeful and practical. B. entirely negative. C. Overly romantic. D. Indifferent and neutral. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。其中有两项为多余选项。 The world has a water problem which is simple to understand but not to solve The amount of water in the world is limited. But the price — five dollars — was far beyond Reuben Earle’s ability. However, he opened the door and went inside. Standing proud and straight, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?” “I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “I will raise the five dollars and not tell anybody,” Reuben said to himself Hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in sacks (麻布袋) from a local factory. Sometimes the sacks were thrown away, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory and he could get five cents a piece. That day he found two sacks and sold to the man in charge of packing nails. The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran home. Near his house stood the ancient barn (谷仓) Reuben found a soda tin can (罐头) and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the top of the barn and hid the tin can. All summer long, despite housework at home, Reuben kept on working for his secret task. Although he was cold, tired and hungry, the thought of jewel box in the shop window made him keep going on. Mother’s Day had come! He uncovered the tin can, poured the coins out and began to count. He needed 20 cents more. He had to find four more sacks and sell them before the day ended. Towards evening, Reuben arrived at the factory. The sack buyer was about to close and leave. “Sir! Please don’t close up yet.” The man turned and saw Reuben, dirty and sweating. “Come back tomorrow, boy.” “Please, Sir I have to sell the sacks now — please.” 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: The man heard a slight shake in Reuben’s voice and could tell he was going to cry. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Then he put the parcel (包裹) in Reuben’s hands. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 外海中学2025-2026高二第一学期期中考试 英语试卷 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 A 【1~3题答案】 【答案】1.
