Strandhotel B Every morning at 6 a.m., even on weekends, Kamaljeet Singh, 57, is up and out of the house. He starts by spending three hours assisting in giving out food to nearly two dozen drop-off locations across Delhi, then checks on the numerous facilities run by the volunteer organization he leads with his brother, Premjit. The organization was founded in 1989 by their father, Trilokchan Singh, a social worker who practised selfless service. In the 1980s, he began arranging volunteers to help clean temples. Gradually, Trilokchan and his helpers began supporting migrant workers from rural areas. It started with a free breakfast, and eventually the group was also providing basic first aid for minor work injuries. Throughout this time, Trilokchan would begin his days as early as 4 a.m., then go to his paid job at 9 a.m., and end each day by volunteering in the evenings. After his death, Kamaljeet and Premjit, inspired by their father’s lifetime of service, took over. “We are continuing his work of helping the poorest of the poor,” says Premjit, 61, a retired army officer. “Our aim is that no one goes hungry and uncared for in Delhi.” Veerji Ka Dera now feeds about 2,500 people a day, in addition to providing basic medical care to as many as 500 people. The group operates several rented farms — growing crops like wheat and rice — an old-age home and medical and dental clinics. It even operates an animal shelter housing hundreds of rescued cows. All this is made possible by about 250 families who volunteer their time to cook, drive, nurse, farm and clean. Kamaljeet and his wife balance their volunteer work with managing their own company, and they get support from their family. In 2023, the group received a national award for its work. Despite the size and scope of the organization, the brothers claim it brings them no stress. Premjit says spending time with his brother and the volunteers — especially young people — is deeply rewarding. 4. What does Kamaljeet Singh usually do first after getting up every morning? A. He checks the facilities run by his organization. B. He visits the farms to check the crops being grown. C. He manages rented farms together with his brother. D. He gives a hand with sending meals to various spots. 5. What can be inferred about Trilokchan Singh from the text? A. Committed and selfless. B. Wealthy but greedy. C. Hardworking but demanding. D. Ambitious and aggressive. 6. Which of the following best describes the brothers’ attitude toward their work? A. They regard it as a burden that causes stress. B. They view it as a way to gain fame and wealth. C. They treat it as a temporary task for young people. D. They see it as a worthwhile mission that brings joy. 7. What is the best title for the passage? A. A Family Business in Security Industry B. How a Group Achieved a National Honour C. A Tradition of Selfless Service Passed Down D. The Development of Farming in Rural India C Researchers in the U.S. have turned thrown-away grapevine canes (葡萄藤枝条) into a plastic-like material. Led by Srinivas Janaswamy, an associate professor at South Dakota State University, the team developed a method to turn this ignored agricultural byproduct into environmentally friendly packaging. They believe their innovation could set the stage for a biodegradable (可生物降解的) alternative (替代品) to single-use plastics, particularly plastic bags which are among the biggest contributors to global plastic waste. Cellulose (纤维素),the most common organic substance found mainly in plant cell walls, is naturally strong. Janaswamy, whose research focuses on developing a plastic-like bag that can break down naturally in the environment, has explored ways to use this organic material from plants such as avocado peels, banana peels, switchgrass, and spent coffee grounds. Anne Fennell, a distinguished professor at the university, suggested using grapevine canes, which are available in large amounts each year after harvest. “The pruned (修剪下来的) canes are either cut up, turned into fertilizer, or burned in some areas,” Fennell stated. To make better use of them, the two scientists agreed to repurpose them into value-added films. Compared to other materials previously used, winter prunings contain high levels of cellulose and a low water content, making them a perfect material to work with. After harvesting canes from the university’s research vineyard, the scientists dried and ground (研磨) them before extracting the cellulosic material, which was then mixed with liquid and cast onto glass plates to form the films. Testing showed that the films were even stronger than traditional plastic bags. Furthermore, they broke down completely within 17 days in soil degradation trials. Janaswamy concluded that these films demonstrate outstanding potential for food packaging applications. By extracting cellulose from agricultural products, people can create value-added products. Janaswamy believed the results bring his team closer to developing a biodegradable plastic-like bag. 8. What is the main purpose of the research? A. To study plant cell walls. B. To increase grape production. C. To reduce agricultural waste. D. To create green plastic alternatives. 9. Why are winter-pruned grapevine canes suitable for making films? A. They are easy to burn. B. They are soft and shapeable. C. They are available in large amounts. D. They are rich in cellulose and low in water. 10. What did the soil tests show about the grapevine-based films? A. They resisted water and heat. B. They biodegraded within weeks. C. They were stronger than plastics. D. They lost strength when buried. 11. What does the last paragraph mainly suggest about the research? A. Its real-world potential. B. Its step-by-step process. C. Its application challenges. D. Its environmental impact. D What if the lamp-posts in your neighbourhood could recognise your car and your face? This may not sound surprising in a world where CCTV and automatic number-plate recognition are already common. What about if that lamp-post could power itself through its own solar panels, and find another use for any extra power generated? This is what Conflow Power Group (CPG) claims for its iLamps. They may use AI to recognise faces, study the way people walk and even detect “suspicious” (可疑的) or aggressive behaviour. The company says iLamps could eventually help find missing people or fight crime, with the proviso (前提) that this would only be developed in partnership “with the relevant authority”. Some “smart” lamp-posts have been installed in a hospital car park in Warwickshire. Local residents were willing to chat. Karl, 52, said, “The town centre is already full of cameras, and it’s fine. You don’t mind them being there unless you’re up to no good.” Facial recognition is tolerable for a right-thinking citizen. Experts are sceptical (怀疑的) about some of these claims. Prof Rabih Bashroush of the University of East London says the idea of using the lamp-posts as AI data centres is unrealistic. “The technology doesn’t work because there is not enough power, and the economics won’t work.” Solar power to run the iLamps off-grid (离网的) might work in Nigeria, but in Britain the amount generated by the lamp-posts is “negligible”, he said. He also describes some of the claims about facial recognition as “just hype (炒作)”. If you want to see facial recognition go wrong, you just have to look at the retail sector, where it’s widely in use to prevent shoplifting. “We’ve seen misidentification by the police,” said Jasleen Chaggar, an expert on privacy and surveillance (监视). How much do people care if you’re not allowed in a shop and you don’t know why? This raises an important question: How much surveillance should people accept in everyday life? The biggest concern, then, may not be the lamppost itself. It is the growing ability of technology to watch, identify and judge people in public spaces. 12. Which of the following functions does CPG claim its iLamps can perform? A. Detecting unusual behaviour in public places. B. Predicting crimes before they happen. C. Supplying power to nearby buildings. D. Tracking people throughout the town. 13. What does the underlined word “negligible” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Very small and unimportant. B. Powerful and enough. C. Steady and lasting. D. Limited and sufficient. 14. Which of the following statements is true according to the text? A. The iLamps have been widely used all over Britain. B. Karl thinks cameras are unacceptable for citizens. C. CPG may cooperate with official departments. D. Facial recognition never makes mistakes in retail stores. 15. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The iLamps can work well with solar power in Britain. B. People hold different opinions on AI lamp-posts. C. Facial recognition technology has caused many problems D. Experts prove AI lamp-posts are completely useless. In the 1960s and 1970s, the greatest fear was that the human race could be wiped out by nuclear missiles with just a push of a button. Today, however, environmental problems have become the biggest risk to life on Earth. Scientists are looking for ways to reduce this risk, such as using renewable energy instead of coal and oil. ____16____. What is our Plan B for Earth if the terrible scenes in films like The Day After Tomorrow come true? ____17____. The most possible choice is Mars, which is relatively close to Earth and has a less hostile environment than other planets. Children had learned to read in its cozy corners, surrounded by piles of picture books. Old friends had met there for coffee and conversation, losing themselves among the shelves on rainy afternoons. The owner, Michelle, had poured her heart into the store since 2017, working alongside three part-time employees who felt more like family. Then came the news. The old building where the bookstore had stood for decades was scheduled for demolition (拆迁) to make way for a new development. Michelle had to move — but the only available space nearby was a smaller storefront just a block away. The thought of packing, transporting, and reorganizing over 9,100 books was paralyzing Each book, after all, held a memory: the worn copy of a childhood favorite, the signed edition a customer had treasured for years. Hiring a moving company would cost thousands, money she simply didn’t have. For weeks, Michelle lay awake at night, wondering if she should just close the doors forever. She shared her despair with a few regular customers — a retired teacher who came in every Tuesday, a young mother whose daughter had learned to read there. ”I don’t know how I’ll ever move all these books,” she sighed (叹气), her voice breaking. They nodded sympathetically but couldn’t think of easy answers. Still, word began to spread through the town. People talked in the grocery store, at the school pickup line, over morning coffee. The moving day came. Michelle stood outside the old store, staring at the endless shelves, her heart a knot of fear and hopelessness. She had no idea how she would get a single book to the new location, let alone nine thousand. She half-expected to spend the day alone, boxing and crying. Then she heard footsteps — first a few, then dozens, then a crowd. When she turned around, her breath caught in her throat. Paragraph 1: A human chain of nearly 300 residents lined up from the old bookstore to the new one. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: When the last book found its place on the new shelf, Michelle stepped forward, holding back tears. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2026-2027学年度上学期高二年级联考考试 英语试题 考试时间 120 分钟 总分 150 分(含听力) 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话,选出最佳选项。 1. The Development of Farming in Rural India 【答案】4. D 5. A 6. D 7. 8. D 9. D 10. A 13. A 14. C 15. 根据第二段“They may use Al to recognise faces, study the way people walk and even detect ‘suspicious’ (可疑的) or aggressive behaviour. 根据第四段““The technology doesn’t work because there is not enough power, and the economics won’t work.” Solar power to run the iLamps off-grid (离网的) might work in Nigeria, but in Britain the amount generated by the lamp-posts is “negligible”(这项技术行不通,因为电力不足,经济上也不可行。 根据第二段“The company says iLamps could eventually help find missing people or fight crime, with the proviso (前提) that this would only be developed in partnership “with the relevant authority”.(该公司表示,iLamps最终可以帮助寻找失踪人员或打击犯罪,前提是这项研发只能和相关主管部门合作开展。)” In the 1960s and 1970s, the greatest fear was that the human race could be wiped out by nuclear missiles with just a push of a button. Recently we have had a heated discussion about whether parents should accompany us in studying at school. Opinions vary. Most think it beneficial. With parents accompanying us, we can enjoy a healthier diet and have our goals set and tasks urged, which keeps us energetic and focused. However, about 40% disagree. Constant company may lead to dependence and prevent us from developing good learning habits. Worse still, only when staying alone can we learn self-control. In my view, I support the former idea because parents can encourage us to overcome difficulties and help us form good study habits. 词汇积累 精力充沛的:energetic → vigorous 目标:goal→ objective 导致:lead to → result in 克服:overcome → conquer 2. However, about 40% disagree. Constant company may lead to dependence and prevent us from developing good learning habits. However, about 40% disagree, who think constant company may lead to dependence and prevent us from developing good learning habits. 1】Recently we have had a heated discussion about whether parents should accompany us studying at school. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 A human chain of nearly 300 residents lined up from the old bookstore to the new one. Book after book traveled hand to hand along the sidewalk. Michelle recognized the retired teacher who came in every Tuesday, passing picture books with a gentle smile. “I read this in high school,” a teenager said, holding up a worn novel. “This one is signed by the author,” an elderly woman added. Laughter and memories flowed like the books themselves. In less than two hours, all 9,100 books had reached their new home. Michelle’s three employees stood at the door, tears streaming down their faces. When the last book found its place on the new shelf, Michelle stepped forward, holding back tears. “I almost closed this store,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I thought I would be boxing these books alone. But you turned my darkest day into something I will never forget.” A young mother stepped forward. “This store belongs to all of us,” she said. One by one, hands went up — offers to volunteer, to help, to keep the story going. That day, the community didn’t just move 9,100 books. They carried their own story into a new home. 词汇激活 行为类 ①认出:recognize/identify ②举起:hold up/brandish ③走上前:step forward/advance 情绪类 ①欢笑:laughter/mirth ②泪水顺着他们的脸颊流下: tears streaming down their faces/tears pouring down their cheeks 【点睛】【高分句型1】Michelle recognized the retired teacher who came in every Tuesday, passing picture books with a gentle smile.
