On October 11,2025,over 1,600 athletes took part in swimming in the 2025 Ironman World
Championship Triathlon(铁人三项).After their long swim, they biked for over 100 miles. Then
they ran a marathon.Natalie Grabow,80,set a new record as the oldest woman ever to finish the
race.
Natalie Grabow may act young,but she's also an 80-year-old grandmother.Still that didn't
stop her from running the race or finishing it.In fact,Ms.Grabow has completed the Ironman 11
times in total. That's pretty impressive for a woman who couldn't swim until she was 59.
Ms.Grabow has long been athletic. But when she was growing up,girls were more likely to
be seen as cheerleaders than as athletes. When her kids were young, she began playing tennis. She
took up running when she went back to work as a software developer.
After a while, some of her running friends began to take part in triathlons. They believed that
doing different activities lowered their chances of getting injured while exercising.Ms.Grabow
was also interested, but she had never learned how to swim. She decided she would have to learn.
It took time. She wasn't good at it at first, but she improved.
In 2002,she took part in a half-Ironman for the first time.In her early sixties, she was good
enough to make it to the Ironman World Championship. The only thing different this year was that
she ran the course as an 80-year-old.There was no one else in her age group.
Ms.Grabow ran the same course as everyone else-in the same heat, and up the same hills.

Carved into a desert cliff along the ancient Silk Road, the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang stand as
a silent library of Chinese art and faith.Their story lasts over a thousand years, holding treasures
of architecture, sculpture, murals, and countless scriptures. This unbelievable legacy began with a
single sight.
In 366 AD,a traveling monk named Le Zun saw a breathtaking sight in the morning:a
thousand golden Buddhas (shining on the cliff face.Inspired,he started carving the first cave.
Soon,monks,wealthy businessmen,and emperors funded more caves,filling them with art.For
centuries,Mogao was a lively spiritual center.
But when the Silk Road was less used,Dunhuang came out of people's memory. The caves
were largely abandoned, forgotten by the world, though locals still sometimes worshipped (
there.Centuries later,in the early 1900s,a Taoist monk named Wang Yuanlu became the caves'
lonely guardian.Seeing their ruined situation,he began a respectful restoration.
One day in 1900,while cleaning sand,he made a historic find behind a cracked wall-a
hidden space,later called Cave #17 or the"Library Cave."Inside,piled from floor to ceiling,were
over 50,000 ancient documents ()paintings,and textiles, perfectly protected in the dry air.
Scholars believed the cave was sealed in the 11th century.
A number of theories have been proposed as the reason for closing the cave. One theory was
that the cave had become a waste storeroom for precious, damaged and used documents and holy
equipment and then was closed perhaps when the place came under threat.Others suggested that
the monks hurriedly hid the documents in advance of an attack by enemies.
Wang's discovery uncovered a lost world, making Mogao Caves one of the greatest cultural
treasures and a monument to human devotion across time.
28.What inspired the carving of the caves?
A.Active trade along the Silk Road.
B.Great Buddha images on the cliff.
C.Worship of Buddhas from locals.

A wildfire is an uncontrolled fire that happens in forests, grasslands,or other wild areas. While
it often seems to be dangerous, fire is a natural part of the world. Some plants even need the heat
from fires to open their seeds and grow. However, when wildfires burn too large, too hot,or too
close to human living places, they become main disasters.
Wildfires need three elements to start, known as the“fire triangle'':fuel(然料),like dry trees,
grass,and bushes,oxygen,and a heat source.The heat source can be natural,such as a lightning
strike,or human-caused activities,like a campfire left unwatched,broken power lines,or even a
cigarette.Dry,hot, and windy weather creates perfect conditions for fires to spread rapidly.
These fires destroy large areas of forests and wildlife habitats, bringing terrible damage to
nature and human beings. The fires release very large amounts of terrible smoke, causing poor
air quality and serious health risks. What's more, wildfires cause widespread economic loss by
destroying homes, buildings and people's belongings and important systems like roads, bridges
and power lines, while also directly threatening human lives and communities. The long-term
ecological recovery can take years.
Prevention is the most effective tool. This includes creating firebreaks by purposely clearing
possible fuel-like dry grass, bushes, and dead wood-from a certain long and narrow piece
of land to stop the fire's spread.Other measures include conducting controlled burns and most
importantly, public education.People should be extremely careful with any outdoor fire during dry
seasons.Living with wildfire means respecting its power and learning to take care of nature and
ourselves.
32.What does the“fire triangle”refer to?
A.Heat sources of wildfires.
B.Necessary factors of wildfires.
C.Damages caused by wildfires.
D.Conditions for wildfire spread.
33.What can be inferred about wildfires?
A.Their threats to humans are mostly indirect.
B.They are mainly caused by human activities.
C.Their advantages for plants beat disadvantages
D.They have lasting effects on the ecological system.
高一英语质量监测卷·第5页(共8页)
34.How can a firebreak be created?
A.Removing fuel from a certain area
B.Dealing with any outdoor fire carefully.
C.Raising public awareness of prevention.
D.Cutting the number of human-caused burns.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Wildfires:Causes and Effects
B.Prevention:The Solution to Wildfires
C.Disasters:A Natural Part of the World
D.Wildfires:Nature's Force and Human Reaction

I attended a high school in the countryside.Our headteacher,Ms.Li,was strict but kind.She
noticed everything, but her smile could also make us feel safe. One Friday afternoon, during the
self-study course,Ms.Li said she had to leave for a short meeting. She told us we must keep silent
until she returned."True learning begins with self-discipline (),she added seriously before
closing the door.
However,as soon as her footsteps faded, whispers (started. From the row by the window,
Robert whispered to his desk mate about a new online game, while two rows ahead,Alice secretly
passed a bag of candies to her friend. At first,I focused on my math homework, determined to
ignore them. But when my classmate Levi turned around and asked me about a chemistry problem,
I forgot the rule.I whispered back and showed him my notebook.
Suddenly,the door opened.Ms.Li stood there,looking around the room.Silence fell
immediately, and the air felt tense. Some students quickly sat up straight, while others nervously
hid the things in their hands. We could even hear students shouting outside in PE class.Ms.Li
walked to the teacher's desk and said calmly,"Those who spoke when I left, please stand up."
A strong feeling of guilt washed over me with my heart beating fast.I looked at Levi,
who had frozen in his seat.Other students also kept their heads down.I knew I faced a choice:
remain safely hidden or admit my mistake with honesty.I remembered my parents always told me
to be honest.Even though I had made a mistake,I needed to set an example for the class.I took a
deep breath, pushed my chair back and stood up
