The common belief was that to copy an enzyme’s function, one had to perfectly copy its difficult, folded 3D structure. A recent breakthrough from a team led by Professor Ting Xu at the University of California, Berkeley, has made this a big step forward. Instead of perfectly copying a protein’s exact structure, the researchers focused on designing Random Heteropolymers (RHPs). These are a variety of things made from a mix of different chemical building blocks. The key design rule they discovered was that the polymer’s (多聚物) soft carbon “backbone” could bend to create the right micro-environment for a chemical reaction, even without a perfect shape. In simple terms, it’s like creating a functional workbench not by building a fixed tool box,but by having a self-adapting table that can arrange its tools as needed. Guided by computer analysis of over 1,300 natural metal-containing enzymes, the team programmed their RHPs by including key functional monomers (the tools) and strictly controlling the chemical character of the parts containing them. The result was amazing. These polymers formed pseudo-active sites that could successfully speed difficult reactions, such as the oxidation (氧化) of a molecule. In some ways, they even perform better than their natural counterparts. This discovery opens a new path for functional material design. The researchers expect that this basic knowledge could lead to new plastics designed to break down safely in the environment,or materials able to clean up pollutants from waterways. It represents a change from trying to perfectly imitate nature’s blueprint to learning its basic design means, enabling us to create materials that meet our own technological and environmental needs. 4. Why do scientists try to build artificial copies of enzymes? A. To copy their functions. B. To change their structures. C. To prepare them for sale. D. To make them easier to see. 5. What is the main difference between the new and traditional ways to build artificial enzymes? A. The new way needs a fixed tool box to conduct. B. The new way places functional ability over perfect structural copying. C. The new way focuses on making the artificial enzyme more affordable. D. The new way avoids using any chemical building blocks found in nature. 6. What does the underlined word “counterparts” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Competitors. B. Designers. C. Equals. D. Survivors. 7. What can we learn about the probable effect of this research according to the text? A. It will soon replace natural enzymes. B. It has had practical applications already. C. It is changing the way we treat diseases. D. It may lead to environmentally friendly materials. A 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第一段“The common belief was that to copy an enzyme’s function, one had to perfectly copy its difficult, folded 3D structure.(普遍认为,要复制酶的功能,就必须完美复制其复杂的折叠三维结构。)” 故选A。 根据第二段“Instead of perfectly copying a protein’s exact structure, the researchers focused on designing Random Heteropolymers (RHPs).(研究人员没有完美地复制蛋白质的确切结构,而是专注于设计随机异聚物(RHPs))”和第三段“In some ways, they even perform better than their natural counterparts.(在某些方面,它们甚至比天然的同类酶表现得更好。)” 根据上文“These polymers formed pseudo-active sites that could successfully speed difficult reactions, such as the oxidation (氧化) of a molecule.(这些聚合物形成了“伪活性位点”,能够成功加速一些困难的反应,例如某一分子的氧化反应。)”和“In some ways, they even perform better than their natural counterparts.(在某些方面,它们甚至比天然的______ 表现得更好。)” 由此可知, equals(对应物、同类事物)最符合题意。 根据最后一段“The researchers expect that this basic knowledge could lead to new plastics designed to break down safely in the environment, or materials able to clean up pollutants from waterways.(研究人员预计,这些基础知识可能会导致设计出能在环境中安全分解的新型塑料,或者能够清理水道污染物的材料。)” D。 ①Water is important. Have you ever wondered where all the water on the earth came from? Is the earth the only planet with water? ②To answer these questions, we must understand what water is made up of. Water is made up of tiny building blocks called atoms (原子). When atoms join together, they make molecules (分子). The molecule that makes up water is called H2O. ③To find out where water came from, we have to go back to the beginning of the universe. Hydrogen (氢), one of the things that make up water, has been around since nearly the start of the universe. Oxygen (氧), the other thing in water, came later. Inside the first stars, it was so hot that hydrogen began to turn into something else, including oxygen, and made new things. When these stars blew up, they spread these new things, including water molecules, throughout the universe. Some of these water molecules ended up in our solar system and became part of our planet over time. ④There were also water molecules inside the earth as it was forming. However, scientists are unsure if this explains all the water we see on the earth today. There are a few ideas. ⑤One idea is that water from deep inside the earth slowly made its way to the surface (表层) over time. ⑥Another idea is that water came to the earth when things from other parts of space hit it, like asteroids and comets ⑦Other planets, like Neptune and Uranus, also have water, but what makes the earth different is that it has proper temperatures. If we were too close to the sun, it would be too hot on the earth and the water would turn into gas. If we were too far away, the water would freeze into ice at very low temperatures. Our planet’s temperatures are just right, and that’s why we have water in all its different forms. Lucky us! 8. Which of the following shows the relationship between “atom”, “molecule” and “water”? (A = atom, M = molecule, W = water) A. B. C. D. 9. Why does the writer mention “Lucky us!” at the end of the passage? A. To summarize the main facts about water on Earth. B. To criticize people for not caring about water. C. To give a new piece of information about water in space. D. To show the writer’s happy feeling about Earth’s special place. 10. Where may the water we see today come from according to the text? ①From asteroids and comets. ②From inside the earth. ③From Neptune and Mars. ④From the first stars. A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①③④ 11. Which of the following shows the structure of this text? A. B. C. D. 【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第二段中“Water is made up of tiny building blocks called atoms (原子). When atoms join together, they make molecules (分子). The molecule that makes up water is called H2O.(水是由被称为原子的微小构件组成的。当原子结合在一起时,它们就形成了分子。构成水的分子被称为H2O)”可知,原子组成分子,分子构成水。故选A项。 根据最后一段中“If we were too close to the sun, it would be too hot on the earth and the water would turn into gas. If we were too far away, the water would freeze into ice at very low temperatures. Our planet’s temperatures are just right, and that’s why we have water in all its different forms. Lucky us! 根据第三段中“When these stars blew up, they spread these new things, including water molecules, throughout the universe. Some of these water molecules ended up in our solar system and became part of our planet over time. (当这些恒星爆发时,它们将这些包括水分子的新物质散播到了整个宇宙。随着时间的推移,其中一些水分子进入了我们的太阳系,并成为了地球的一部分)”可知,水可能来自第一批恒星;根据第五段中“One idea is that water from deep inside the earth slowly made its way to the surface (表层) over time.(一种观点是,随着时间的推移,来自地球深处的水慢慢地到达了地表)”可知,水可能来自地球内部;根据第六段中“Another idea is that water came to the earth when things from other parts of space hit it, like asteroids and comets (小行星和彗星). For humans, flashing a smile is an easy way to avoid misunderstandings. And, according to a new study, bottlenose dolphins may use a similar method while playing with each other. The study found that dolphins make an open-mouthed expression comparable to a “smile” during their play. To conduct the research, a group of scientists from Italy and France observed 11 dolphins at Zoomarine Rome and another 11 at Planet e Sauvage in western France playing with each other, their human trainers, and on their own. The researchers found that the dolphins “smiled” almost always when they were in their playmate’s field of view, and their playmate gave a “smile” in response (回应) about one third of the time. This suggests it is a form of communication, with researchers hypothesizing (推测) that by “smiling” at each other, the dolphins could stop their games from turning into a real fight due to miscommunication. Although their expression looks like a smile to humans, dolphin-communication expert Heather Hill, a professor at St. Mary’s University who wasn’t included in the study, reminds people not to read too much into it. “I do think the dolphins join in an open-mouthed response during play situations. But I’m not comfortable calling it a smile, as they show this behavior in many other contexts,” she said, pointing to its use during fights or alone time. “Should we really just see it as an information exchange like’ hey, we are on the same page?” she added. Despite dolphins’ playfulness and rich social lives, their facial expressions during play had never been studied before. The researchers in the latest study found that 92% of the examples when dolphins used the open-mouthed expression happened when they were playing with each other, rather than with humans or by themselves. All the dolphins observed for this study are living in captivity (圈养) . Hill noted that the “smiling” behavior probably happens in the wild too, but perhaps less often, as wild dolphins spend more time looking for food and avoiding dangerous animals. “The next step would be to study those wild species and observe their behaviors in the same kinds of context,” she said. 12. What did the study find about dolphins’ “smiling” behavior? A. It may be their special way of showing love. B. It may be used to avoid misunderstandings. C. It is often seen when they make mistakes. D. It is learned from human trainers. 13. How might a dolphin respond to others’ “smiling” behavior during play? A. It makes a surprise attack. B. It smiles back part of the time. C. It stops the game at once. D. It swims away to leave their sight. 14. What was Heather Hill’s attitude towards the research findings? A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Unclear. D. Upset. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Dolphin’s “Smile”: A Misunderstanding by Humans B. The Role of Smiling in the Social Lives of Dolphins C. Wild Dolphins vs. Captive Dolphins: Differences in Facial Expressions D. A New Study on Bottlenose Dolphins’ Open-mouthed Expression in Play 【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第一段“For humans, flashing a smile is an easy way to avoid misunderstandings. And, according to a new study, bottlenose dolphins may use a similar method while playing with each other. (对于人类而言,露出笑容是一种避免误解的简单方法。而根据一项新的研究,宽吻海豚在相互玩耍时或许也会采用类似的方法)”和第三段“This suggests it is a form of communication, with researchers hypothesizing (推测) that by “smiling” at each other, the dolphins could stop their games from turning into a real fight due to miscommunication. (这表明这是一种交流方式,研究人员推测,通过相互“微笑”,海豚可以避免因沟通不畅而导致的游戏演变成真正的争斗)”可知,研究发现海豚的“微笑”行为可能是用来避免误解的。故选B。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“The researchers found that the dolphins “smiled” almost always when they were in their playmate’s field of view, and their playmate gave a “smile” in response (回应) about one third of the time. (研究人员发现,当海豚处于同伴的视野范围内时,它们“微笑”的情况几乎总是出现,而其同伴也会相应地做出“微笑”的反应,大约三分之一的时间会如此。)”可知,在玩耍时,海豚玩伴大约三分之一的时间会以“微笑”回应。故选B。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Although their expression looks like a smile to humans, dolphin-communication expert Heather Hill, a professor at St. Mary’s University who wasn’t included in the study, reminds people not to read too much into it. (尽管这种表情在人类看来像是微笑,但海豚交流专家、圣玛丽大学教授希瑟·希尔(她未参与此项研究)提醒人们不要过度解读)”和第五段““I do think the dolphins join in an open-mouthed response during play situations. But I’m not comfortable calling it a smile, as they show this behavior in many other contexts,” she said, pointing to its use during fights or alone time. (“我确实认为海豚在玩耍情境中会做出张嘴的反应。”“但我并不愿意将其称为微笑,因为它们在许多其他情境中也会有这样的表现,”她说道,并指出这种行为在打架时或独处时也会出现)”可知,希瑟·希尔对研究结果持怀疑态度,认为不能简单将其称为“微笑”。故选A。 根据第一段“For humans, flashing a smile is an easy way to avoid misunderstandings. And, according to a new study, bottlenose dolphins may use a similar method while playing with each other. (对于人类而言,露出笑容是一种避免误解的简单方法。而根据一项新的研究,宽吻海豚在相互玩耍时或许也会采用类似的方法)”以及全文可知,文章主要围绕一项关于宽吻海豚在玩耍时张开嘴的表情(类似“微笑”)的新研究展开,介绍了研究过程、发现以及专家对此的看法等。D选项“A New Study on Bottlenose Dolphins’ Open-mouthed Expression in Play(一项关于宽吻海豚在玩耍时张开嘴表情的新研究)”能概括文章主旨,为最佳标题。故选D。 Growing up with 10 brothers and sisters, Behphat moved to Shillong after finishing school in her village. However, she was not prepared for the big change. “The village education system was all about learning by rote. When I entered St Mary’s College in Shillong, I found it difficult because I couldn’t speak English,” she recalls. She dropped the Political Science Honors course and chose “general” subjects as she struggled with the language barrier. ____16____. When she landed her first job at Nazareth Hospital in 2000, the administrator questioned aloud, “How can a BA graduate not understand and speak English?” But Behphat didn’t quit. She bought English reading material, listened carefully to taxi conversations, and slowly but steadily learned the language while working as a ward attendant. “I never felt shy. In one or two years, I got promoted to the reception because I was willing to try,” she tells “Social Story”. ____17____. She absorbed English and confidence, worked with doctors and nurses from different backgrounds and learned to use computers, laying a solid foundation for her future. In 2005, she left the hospital, hoping to pass the UPSC exams. But reality hit hard when she learned coaching classes and books were expensive. Also, her rote-learning background left her unprepared for analytical thinking. ____18____. She got a job at an English-medium school in Shillong’s Seven Mile area. Her days were long and tiring. However, her hard work paid off. She was praised by the headmaster as the best speaker among the staff. ____19____. She did social work with groups like WISE and Guwahati Social Forum. She traveled across states, organized training courses, and worked closely with grassroots communities. This new experience gave her new ideas about education’s influence. She could see more clearly how education shapes people’s lives and opportunities. As she travelled and reflected on her journey, her roots reminded her of the past. “Why didn’t I get these opportunities when I was young and could do more?” she wondered. This question showed her link to her origins. ____20____ A. The challenges continued B. Not discouraged, she turned to teaching C. In 2009, Behphat took another important step D. For five years, the hospital was her training ground E. By 2013, the idea of starting her own organization took root F. My mom was no exception. She brought us to Union Station to help us buy Christmas presents for each other, and for her. Because of Mom, my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I would get to experience the joy of giving. I wanted to find her something special. The pleasant smell of chocolates reached my nose and I wanted to stay. Normally, when we came here, the candy makers were what I wanted to see most, but today I had a mission. So we walked on. We explored many stores selling jewelry, purses, toys, clothing and treats, but nothing caught my eye. I just wanted something unique for Mom. I didn’t know what, but I knew I would recognize it when I saw it. All of a sudden there it was, the perfect gift for her! On one of the stands sat a figurine (小塑像) of a lion and a lamb lying down together. It would go well with a drawing of a similar scene Mom had hung on the wall. I had heard her talk about how long she had owned the picture and who had drawn it for her. I knew it was very special. I turned the figurine over to check the price and yes, it was expensive as was expected, but I could afford it! I had saved some extra money in my pocket from babysitting the neighbor kids, so I had more money than what Mom had given me. But she was standing nearby. No way could I make the purchase without her knowing. A moment later, she noticed the very same figurine. I watched her eyes light up. She picked it up and turned it over. Then, she slowly put it down with a look of disappointment after seeing the price. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I placed it under the Christmas tree and waited eagerly for Christmas morning. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version Then, she slowly put it down with a look of disappointment after seeing the price. Letting out a sigh, she walked away, her eyes still lingering on it. I could tell how much she loved it but I knew she wouldn’t buy. Determined to give her a surprise, I waited until she was out of sight and quickly made the purchase My heart beat fast as I thought about what a surprise this would be on Christmas morning. With the figurine in my bag, I went home with my family. I placed it under the tree and waited eagerly for Christmas morning. The day finally came. My siblings and I tore into the treats and treasures our parents had lovingly put inside stockings and brightly wrapped packages. Then we began presenting gifts to parents. When my mom unwrapped my gift, she recognized the figurine instantly, and her face lit up with surprise and joy. She turned to me and hugged me tightly with tears in her eyes. Seeing her happy made me realize the joy of giving. 词汇激活 行为类 ①购买:purchase/make a purchase ②意识到:realize/be conscious of ③拥抱:hug/embrace 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprise/astonishment/amazement ②高兴:joy/happiness 【点睛】【高分句型1】My heart beat fast as I thought about what a surprise this would be on Christmas morning.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句和what引导的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】When my mom unwrapped my gift, she recognized the figurine instantly, and her face lit up with surprise and joy.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025-2026学年方城县第一高级中学高三英语1月第3次周考试题 一、阅读理解 Whether you are an art lover or simply curious, the Summer Art Festival has something for you. ①Water is important. A. B. C. D. A New Study on Bottlenose Dolphins’ Open-mouthed Expression in Play Growing up with 10 brothers and sisters, Behphat moved to Shillong after finishing school in her village. And it also deepened her understanding of giving others equal educational chances G. But Behphat is looking out for not just children’s education, but the confidence to dream big Last weekend, I helped my 8-year-old neighbor Lily learn to ride a bike on the square. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
