A few weeks ago, I shouted at my 13-year-old daughter for something that she wasn’t responsible for. When she pointed out my mistake, she gave me a proud look that said, “So, what’s your excuse now?” I knew an apology was the right thing to do, and the words were ready... but I stopped myself for a short moment, fully aware that my pride was trying to stop me from doing the right thing.
The ironic (讽刺的) part is, I’ve been studying the psychology of apologies for 15 years, seeking research evidence (证据) to help us understand why people are unwilling to apologize. Unluckily, one of the things I’ve learned through experience is that knowing why you don’t want to apologize doesn’t make you not feel its importance — it just makes you aware of your own mistakes.
The research tells us that people may be unwilling to offer an apology (even when it is well-deserved) because it can make us feel threatened
●Apologies can feel like reducing your own worth. Yes, because you are the one who messed up! It makes you feel bad because you are admitting to others that you are doing wrong. It’s challenging for those who pride themselves as knowledgeable. It questions our self-worth: We are not the perfect person.
●Apologies give up power and control. Yes, because when you messed up, chances are that your mistake hurt someone else (the “victim (受害者)”). Apologies return that power and control to that victim, who may choose to accept the apology or not.
So, when you apologize, you place these two parts of yourself into the hands of the victim. The victim can then hold that against you, making you feel worse about yourself... or, through their forgiveness (原谅), the victim can help with your bad feelings. That self-uncertainty is a bad feeling.
The good news is, our worry is often unnecessary. An apology usually makes us feel better, rather than as bad as we fear.
8. Why does the author write the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of the text.
B. To describe a personal experience.
C. To explain the importance of apologies.
D. To show her relationship with her daughter.
9. What was the author’s first reply when her daughter pointed out her mistake?
A. She was angry.
B. She ignored the mistake.
C. It was hard for her to apologize.
D. She apologized quickly.
10. What may stop people from apologizing according to the research?
A. Their own mistakes.
B. The threat to their power.
C. The victim’s not forgiving.
D. The uncertainty of the victim’s reply.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards making apologies?
A. Unsure. B. Unhappy.
C. Indifferent. D. Positive.
【答案】8 A 9. C 10. B 11. D

If you’re sick or you have hurt yourself, you might see a doctor who could give you medicine to make you feel better. Wild animals can’t go to their GP (全科医生) but a new study suggests chimpanzees (黑猩猩) are using plants to treat themselves.
Scientists already knew that chimps eat plants that have the same effects as some medicines, but they weren’t sure if this was by accident. To make it clear, a team watched the behaviour and health of 51 chimpanzees in Budongo rainforest in Uganda over four years.
The scientists looked for plants they had seen sick or injured chimps eating — even though they weren’t part of the apes’ normal diet — as well as plants that other studies had suggested chimps might use as medicine.
The researchers found that 88% of the plants they gathered helped stop the growth of microorganism which is often a cause of disease. The research team also found that 33% of the plants had anti-inflammatory (消炎的) effects. Anti-inflammatory medicines reduce inflammation (redness and pain) in the body.
One of the chimps the team studied had a hurt hand. The chimp found and ate a type of fern (蕨类) called Christella parasitica, but no other chimp in his group did. Scientists think the plant might have helped reduce the pain in the chimp’s hand. Dr Elodie Freymann, the lead researcher on the study, told that all the ill chimps in the study made full recoveries. “The one who ate ferns was using his hand again within the next few days,” she said.
It is very dangerous to try using plants as medicine unless you are an expert. However, the team thinks the plants in Budongo used by chimps could help the development of new medicines for humans.
12. Why did the scientists watch the chimpanzees for four years?
A. To study their daily life.
B. To find out if they ate plants by chance.
C To know their behaviour and health.
D. To collect different plants in the rainforest.
13. What can we know about the chimp that had a hurt hand?
A. It was found eating a plant not part of its normal diet.
B. It was the only chimp in the study to use a medicinal plant.
C. It completely recovered without the help of the medicinal plant.
D. It did not share the medicinal plant with other chimps in its group.
14. What can we infer from the text?
A. Chimpanzees know more about medicine than humans.
B. The plants used by chimpanzees will surely cure human diseases.
C. Studying chimpanzees’ use of plants may be good for human medicine.
D. Humans should copy chimpanzees’ way of using plants as medicine.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Chimpanzees Use Plants as Medicine
B. How Wild Animals Treat Themselves
C. A Study on Chimpanzees’ Eating Habits
D. New Medicines Found in Rainforest Plants
B 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第二段“Scientists already knew that chimps eat plants that have the same effects as some medicines, but they weren’t sure if this was by accident. To make it clear, a team watched the behaviour and health of 51 chimpanzees in Budongo rainforest in Uganda over four years.(科学家们早已知道黑猩猩会食用一些具有类似药物效果的植物,但他们不确定这是否只是偶然。为了弄清楚这一点,一个研究小组对乌干达布东戈雨林中的51只黑猩猩进行了为期四年的行为和健康状况观察。)”可知,科学家要观察黑猩猩四年是为了查明它们是否是偶然吃植物的。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“One of the chimps the team studied had a hurt hand. The chimp found and ate a type of fern (蕨类) called Christella parasitica, but no other chimp in his group did. Scientists think the plant might have helped reduce the pain in the chimp’s hand.(研究小组观察的一只黑猩猩手部受伤。这只黑猩猩找到并食用了一种名为“Christella parasitica”的蕨类植物,但它的同伴们都没有这样做。科学家们认为,这种植物可能有助于减轻黑猩猩手部的疼痛。)”可知,那只手受伤的黑猩猩没有与群体中的其他黑猩猩分享这种药用植物。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, the team thinks the plants in Budongo used by chimps could help the development of new medicines for humans.(然而,研究小组认为,布东戈雨林中黑猩猩所使用的植物可能有助于开发供人类使用的新药物。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Wild animals can’t go to their GP (全科医生) but a new study suggests chimpanzees (黑猩猩) are using plants to treat themselves.(野生动物无法去看全科医生,但一项新研究表明,黑猩猩会利用植物来自我治疗。)” 故选A。

D. Positive.

C. To know their behaviour and health.
