Are you getting bored with seeing similar places on the ground? Why not try a hot air balloon flight? Fly high and enjoy amazing sights from the sky. Here’s something you need to know.
All ages are welcome, but kids under 12 must fly with an adult. You should be fit enough to climb in and out of the balloon basket by yourself. And people with health problems cannot take the flight.
Weather is important for a successful flight. We need light winds and a clear, rain-free sky. If it’s too cloudy, we’ll change the flight time.
Our flights happen right after sunrise or before sunset. The flying season is from March to October. Don’t miss it because we don’t fly in winter!
It’s much colder in the sky, so wear warm sweaters and jackets. And remember to put on your boots—you may walk in wet fields for a while after landing.
The wind decides where the balloon goes! And our pilots will find a safe place to land. It might be 5 to 30 km away from the starting point. But don’t worry. We’ll send a bus to pick you up. You won’t have to walk all the way back!
Hot air balloon flight is safe, fun, and great for most people. Come to enjoy the beautiful views from the sky! It will surely become one of your most unforgettable memories! Are you ready for this exciting flight?

I hoped to be set free one day, so I was nice to the Lilliputians. Gradually, they lost fear of me. Sometimes the children even played hide-and-seek in my hair.
One day, the king said to me, “Gulliver, I invite you to watch an important performance. It is a competition called Rope Dancing”. A thin rope was tied between two poles(杆) very high above the ground. People had to dance on this rope. Each dancer tried to jump higher than the others. I had never seen such a dangerous sport.
“Your Majesty,” I said, “______.”
“Yes, but I will give the best jobs in my kingdom to the men who are not afraid and jump the highest.” he replied.
“What a strange way to choose who will work for the country!” I thought.
Then, as the king watched, I tied each corner of my handkerchief(手帕) to a strong stick, and pushed the four sticks into the ground. My handkerchief was now under the rope but above the ground. Any dancer who fell would land on the handkerchief and not get hurt. The king was very happy with my invention. His family and many other people watched the rope dancing.
“Would you and the queen like to see better?” I asked the king. I gently put them on my hand and held it beside the rope. They had a good view of the dancers. One very skilled performer held on to the rope and flipped his body right over it. The king and the queen were so happy that they clapped loudly and cheered. Later the king told me that he chose this man as one of his chief advisers.
The king and I met often. He seemed to enjoy our conversations. One day, I said again, “Your Majesty, please set me free.” This time he answered, “I have talked to my advisers. We agree that you have been good to our people...”

①Do you have an old mercury (水银) thermometer (体温计) in your medicine box at home? For over 100 years, these glass thermometers have been common in families because they are cheap and accurate (准确的). They help people check if they have a fever and are like helpful friends when we are sick.
②You may wonder how a mercury thermometer works. It has a little mercury inside a thin glass tube. Mercury expands when heated and contracts when cooled. Before use, you need to shake it hard to push the mercury back down below 35℃. When you put it under your arm or in your mouth, your body heat makes the mercury rise in the tube to show your temperature.
③However, a big change is coming. Starting from January 1, 2026, companies in China will stop producing these mercury thermometers. Soon, people will no longer be able to buy them in shops.
④There are several reasons for the stop of production. Mercury is highly toxic (有毒). If the glass breaks—from shaking too hard, dropping or hitting hard surfaces—mercury comes out and turns into toxic gas (气体) quickly. Breathing it in can cause headaches and tiredness. Also, you should never touch mercury with your hands, as it can enter your body through the skin and cause health problems.
⑤What’s more, using mercury thermometers usually takes about 10 minutes. They are also difficult to read because the mercury line is very thin, and it is hard for you to see it clearly. They are not as convenient as other kinds of thermometers.
⑥Now, the old “health guards” are retiring while electronic (电子的) thermometers are becoming the new heroes. They are usually made of plastic and have a screen, which are safe and easy to use. They can take your temperature without touching you.
⑦In the future, we will have even better tools. We might use smart watches or other cool gadgets(小工具) to check our health. They will be smarter, faster, and safer. So, let’s get ready to say goodbye to the old glass tubes.
32. Which has the same meaning as the underlined word “expand” in Paragraph 2?
expand /ɪk’spænd/v. ①膨胀 ②拓展(业务) ③详述
A. ▶The air in a balloon will expand if you leave it under the hot sun.
B. ▶The robotics industry expands fast nowadays.
C. ▶I asked the question again and waited for her to expand.
D. ▶Could you expand on that point, please?
33. Why do we stop making mercury thermometers?
A. Because mercury thermometers are not very accurate.
B. Because the electronic thermometers are much cheaper.
C. Because it is a lot easier to make electronic thermometers.
D. Because mercury thermometers are dangerous when broken.
34 What should you do if a mercury thermometer breaks at home?
A. Pick up the glass pieces with your hands.
B. Open the window and leave the room quickly.
C. Use a bag to collect the mercury and store it.
D. Take a deep breath to calm yourself down.
35. What is the best structure of this passage?
A. B.
C. D.

In 2016, Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NJUST) started the “Warm Meal Card” project to help poor students silently, and it is still going on now. It has helped thousands of students and become a warm example of caring for others with pride (自尊心).
We never have face-to-face talks with students in need, and they don’t need to apply (申请) for help or fill in any forms. Instead, we find the students who really need help by checking their meal card spending. Once we are sure, we put money into their meal cards directly, without any notice.
—Ms. Wang, a teacher at NJUST
I eat three meals in the school dining hall every day. I always pick the cheapest dishes, like 3-yuan vegetable rice or 4-yuan tofu soup. I try to save every penny because my family is not rich. I never talk about my family’s situation with my roommates—I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me. Surprisingly, I found extra (额外的) money in my meal card one day. I had no idea about it until my teacher told me about the project. I don’t know how to express my thanks! So I decide to do something kind to the society in return in the future.
—Li Jia, a student at NJUST
I still remember the day I saw extra money in my meal card. At first, I thought it was a mistake. Later, I found out the truth from my teacher. What touched me most was that the school helped me without letting anyone know my hard situation. It protected my pride carefully. After finishing university, I donate (捐赠) money to the project every month. I just want to pass on this kindness and let more students feel the same warmth I felt.
—Zhang Wei, a graduate (毕业生) from NJUST

When faced with stress or problems, who do we ask for help? Who can lift our spirits? It’s an understanding friend who really cares about us and is always there to listen.
We all know that spending time with good friends makes us happier. In fact, scientists even put this feeling to the test in different ways, and found that teenage friendships benefit mental (心理的) health.
In a study of 108 high school students in Australia, an example shows us how strong friendships help teenagers deal with stressful events. Sarah, a 14-year-old student failed her mid-term English exam. She felt very disappointed and was afraid to face her parents and teachers. However, after chatting with her close friend, she realized she wasn’t alone and that everyone experiences failure sometimes.
In fact, friendship not only gives teenagers help for the present (当下) but also makes a difference to the future. In another study, researchers talked to 169 teenage students and followed them for 10 years. The result tells us that teenagers with close friendships may become better parents when they grow up. That’s because they are more patient and understanding with their close friends. The skills they learn from teenage friendships are very helpful for taking care of children later.
Although people often believe that the more friends they have, the happier they will be, experts argue that this is not true. Having too many friends does not bring more happiness but may make teenagers feel nervous in social life. Actually, the most important thing about teenage friendships is not how many friends we have, but how kind, sincere, honest, patient and helpful our friends are. We don’t need to have so many friends as long as they are good.
When facing stress and problems, an understanding friend plays an important part. The writer uses two studies to show that ____59____, not only now but also in the future. One study shows strong friendships can help teenagers feel better after stressful events. Another 10-year study finds that close friendships ____60____ because patience and understanding lead to better parenting skills. However, with too many friends around, teenagers may feel nervous instead of ____61____. In fact, good teenage ___62___ depend on ____63____, not the number of friends.

It’s much colder in the sky, so wear warm sweaters and jackets. And remember to put on your boots—you may walk in wet fields for a while after landing.

Mercury is highly toxic (有毒的).

A. Because mercury thermometers are not very accurate.
B. Because the electronic thermometers are much cheaper.
C. Because it is a lot easier to make electronic thermometers.
D. Because mercury thermometers are dangerous when broken.
34. What should you do if a mercury thermometer breaks at home?
