One day, an old wizard (男巫) went by the village and saw Leo being made fun of. So when the bad boys left, he gave Leo a lion’s tail. “It’s a magic tail,” the wizard said.“When someone wears it and acts bravely, he or she will turn into a strong lion.” Leo hung the lion’s tail behind his body and decided to teach the bad boys a lesson. But when the boys came, Leo was afraid and tried to run away. However, they caught him. Suddenly, Leo felt the tail behind his body and remembered what the wizard had said. He became brave. He looked them in the eye and said he would make them stop doing that. Leo felt the goosebumps (鸡皮疙瘩) all over his body. “This must be the sign that I am turning into a lion,” he thought. The boys ran away in fear. Leo wanted to catch them, but he found his legs were short as usual. When the wizard saw it, he came to Leo. Leo was very happy, and wanted to tell him how the bad boys were frightened away. However, before he could even speak, he remembered his lion body had lasted only a short time. “You are great,” said the wizard. “But have you ever seen a lion fighting? No one fights with lions because they know how brave and strong lions are.” It was true. Leo had never seen a lion fighting. Too much, however, can be very dangerous. In the past 60 years, CO₂ in the air has increased 100—200 times faster than it did during the end of the last ice age. This puts all the living things on Earth in great danger. So, many people and governments are working to solve the problem. One solution is called Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). This process catches CO₂ produced by human activities and stores it underground so it does not go into the air. But this process itself needs energy produced by fossil fuels (化石燃料) and costs a lot of money. Also, it faces ongoing (持续的) questions about the long- term safety of underground CO₂ storage. Luckily, there is good news. Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a CO₂-eating machine. It collects CO₂ directly from the air and turns it into useful fuels using sunlight. The machine works in a daily cycle (周期). At night, it catches CO₂ from the air using its special filters (过滤器). When daylight arrives, a mirror on it collects the sunlight together. The sunlight heats the CO₂ and turns it into a gas called syngas. The syngas can then be turned into fuels. Compared with CCS, the technology is safer, cleaner, and cheaper, making it a game-changer for solving the problem of too much CO₂. The researchers are now working on improving the technology. They say that if it can be used widely, it could kill two birds with one stone: reducing CO₂ in the air and creating clean fuels. Where there is waste, there is treasure. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 31. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph? A. To begin talking about the topic of CO₂. B. To tell us why CO₂ is important for humans. C. To warn about the danger our planet is facing. D. To say that CO₂ is a special kind of greenhouse gas. 32. What is one problem with the CCS solution according to the text? A. It cannot catch CO₂ made by humans. B. It is impossible to use it widely around the world. C. Storing CO₂ underground for a long time may not be safe. D. It uses only clean energy to work and takes a lot of time. 33. Which of the following best shows how the writer develops his idea? A. problem→one solution to it→a new better solution→hope for the future B. problem→the cause of the problem→2 possible solutions→what we learn C. problem→examples→the cause of the problem→2 possible solutions D. problem→the solution to it→the disadvantage of the solution→hope for the future 34. What does the phrase “kill two birds with one stone” mean in the last paragraph? A. To catch two birds easily. B. To have two jobs at the same time. C. To try two ways to solve one problem. D. To do two helpful things with one action. 35. What is the writer’s attitude toward the CO₂-eating machine? A. Worried about it. B. Not interested in it. C. Confident and hopeful. D. Not sure if it will work. D Many of us were told from a young age that, whether at school or in life, “you should learn from your mistakes”. But is this really true? The answer is “yes”. ____36____ But in fact, learning from our mistakes is very difficult because nobody likes to fail. It feels bad to fail, so we often react to failure with strong feelings. We might give up a task too soon, tell ourselves we don’t care about succeeding, or find fault with the task itself. ____37____ Most of us want to prove (证明) that we’re good at things. Luckily, research shows there are ways to get past the feelings that stop us from learning from failure. One way is to look at the situation as if it happened to someone else. ____38____ Thinking this way makes us feel less hurt, so we can look at what went wrong more calmly. ____39____ A study shows that kids who give advice based on their own failure become more motivated (积极主动的) and do better at school. Helping others creates a sense of satisfaction, which helps them understand their own experience better. It also makes the lessons they learned clearer and stronger. So, is it okay to fail again? Yes—failure is a normal part of life. ____40____ Remember: next time you fail, try to learn from it in a smarter way. 根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺、内容完整。 A. In fact, this is a way to protect ourselves. B. Failure can truly be a valuable learning opportunity. C. Instead of asking “Why did I fail?”, we can ask “Why did Sam fail?” D. Some boys in the village often made fun of him and Leo was afraid. It is important for life on the planet. 【答案】31. A 32. C 33. A 34. D 35. As the year comes to an end, I look back and find a treasured word shining in my memories. My word is “courage”. Last year, I was afraid of speaking in public. When my teacher asked me to give a class presentation, my heart beat fast. I took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. Though my voice shook a little, I finished it. That experience taught me that courage means facing fears, not having any. This year, I will join the school speech club to practice more. I believe my courage will grow like a seed, helping me face bigger challenges tomorrow. I will carry this gift forward, letting it shine brighter with every brave step I take. 【解析】 【详解】[总体分析] ①题材:材料作文; ②时态:一般过去时和一般将来时; ③提示:需包含所选关键词、相关经历、未来行动三部分,围绕个人成长展开 [写作步骤] 第一步:直接点明关键词“courage”,并简述其重要性; 第二步:用具体事例说明该品质如何形成,突出心理变化和收获; 第三步:提出新年具体计划,并展望其对未来的积极影响。 [亮点词汇] ①be afraid of害怕 ②take a deep breath深呼吸 ③face challenges面临挑战 [高分句型] ①When my teacher asked me to give a class presentation, my heart beat fast.
