Christmas markets are everywhere across Europe, especially in Germany, where they bring a fairy-tale sense of wonder to the season. But you don’t have to journey abroad for holiday magic — these fairs in the United States show European-style celebrations while celebrating their cities’ cultural heritage.
Kerstmarkt, Holland, Michigan
Holland’s Kerstmarkt has been a beloved annual tradition for more than 25 years. Wooden booths (展台) fill the 8th Street Marketplace downtown, offering goods from area producers. Look for handmade items from soaps to pens and jewelry. Along with finding unique gifts, you can taste Dutch delicious food, meet Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa Claus, and listen to handbell concerts.
Texas Christkindl Market, Arlington, Texas
Arlington adopted the Bavarian town of Bad Königshofen in 1951, sending much-needed supplies of food and clothing to refugees (难民) escaping East Germany. A close relationship continues to this day. That history inspired the annual Texas Christkindl Market, which started in 2011. The event’s biggest vendor (供应商), Käthe Wohlfahrt, produces traditional German decorations, such as delicate glass decorations and wooden toys. While browsing the wares, don’t miss a performance by the Swiss Longhorns, a famed quartet playing 12-foot-long alphorns.
Christkindlmarkt, Carmel, Indiana
Carmel pyramid sparkles with some 3,000 bulbs, forming the centerpiece of the painstakingly detailed event. Stop by the Werkstatt to watch famous woodworkers and glassblowers from Germany at work. Kids can try their own crafts in the Kinderecke, while exhibits in the Kulturecke explore Indiana’s German-American history: The state was a major hub for German immigration in the 19th century.
1. What can visitors do at the Kerstmarkt?
A. Enjoy handbell concerts.
B. Watch famous woodworkers.
C. Learn the history of Arlington.
D. Watch a performance by the Swiss Longhorns.
2. What does Käthe Wohlfahrt produce?
A. 3,000 bulbs.
B. Wonderful crafts.

At 9 a.m., Ma Haoning performs spinal (脊椎的) surgery in a Beijing hospital. More than ten hours later, the same hands fly across piano keys under stage lights, creating passionate rock music. He lives two lives: a dedicated surgeon and a passionate musician for a famous rock band.
When asked whether he is “the most rock-and-roll doctor” or “the best surgeon among rock musicians”, Ma answers without hesitation: “Definitely the former. Being a doctor will always be my main job.” For him, being a slashie — someone with multiple careers — is not about having it all, but about expanding life’s experiences while keeping a stable professional foundation.
His journey began with an old accordion (手风琴) that once belonged to his mother, whose own musical dream was left unfulfilled. Ma started learning at five, living the dream for her. His two paths fully unfolded after he became an established doctor, with his parents eventually offering full support.
His week is strictly planned: surgery, clinics, teaching, and research. Band rehearsals (排练) fill evenings or weekends. He succeeds through “self-control” and “giving up”, avoiding distractions to protect his focus.
He finds that medicine and music, while different in rules — one strict, the other creative — strengthen each other. Music improves his surgical skill; hospital experiences deepen his emotional understanding, fueling his art. “Medicine is about people. It’s a profession of great warmth,” he says.
Carrying two roles brings double fulfillment: the value of healing and the joy of performing. He admires people like Brian May, the scientist and rock star, as proof that excellence in two fields is possible.
As a vivid example of the slashie lifestyle, Ma believes such multifaceted lives will become common. “Society is also becoming more supportive of these lifestyles. People are increasingly open-minded and encouraging toward those who follow multiple paths — and that reflects social progress,” he says.
4. Which job matters more to Ma Haoning?
A. A rock musician. B. A music teacher.
C. A spinal surgeon. D. A medical researcher.
5. How does Ma manage his time effectively?
A. By reducing his surgical hours.
B. By performing only on weekends.
C. By giving up teaching and research.
D. By practicing self-control and limiting free time.
6. What does the underlined word “multifaceted” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Having a single focused career.
B. Frequently changing interests.
C. Being highly skilled in one area.
D. Having multiple aspects or roles.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Challenge of Surgery
B. Doctor by Day, Rocker by Night
C. Music as a Hobby for Doctors
D. A Doctor’s Stage Performance

Three mosquitoes, two females and one male, have been detected in West Iceland, the first confirmed discovery of mosquitoes on Icelandic soil, according to the Icelandic Institute of Natural History.
Iceland was previously one of two regions with climates too cold for mosquitoes to inhabit. The country’s unique climate and ecological conditions previously did not allow for mosquitoes, especially due to the lack of warm, dead water that the insects require for multiplying.
However, Iceland does have plants and seasonal temperatures that can support insect life, which may have allowed mosquitoes to migrate there as temperatures warmed. Iceland is warming at a rate four times faster than the rest of the northern hemisphere (半球) due to a steady flow of warm air from the south, according to the World Weather Attribution. Rising temperatures, longer summers, and milder winters— all caused by climate change— create a more welcoming environment for mosquitoes to thrive. The species is cold-resistant and can survive Icelandic conditions by sheltering through winter in basements and barns(谷仓).
Climate change is increasing mosquito-spread diseases as warmer temperatures allow the insect to spread to more places and multiply faster, according to the World Mosquito Program. There is currently a trend in mosquito-borne illness, such as malaria(疟疾), in Europe, which is already common across sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America.
The discovery of mosquitoes in Iceland is significant as it marks the end of Iceland’s status as a mosquito-free region, leaving only Antarctica without mosquito populations. The arrival of a new species isn’t just a simple fact— it signals that the environment itself is changing, which may lead to a new balance among all living things in the region. Scientists and environmentalists are paying close attention because it can help us understand how climate change affects wildlife and allows animals to move into new areas.
8. What condition prevented mosquitoes from existing in Iceland in the past?
A. Cold and flowing water.
B. Existence of natural predators.
C. Enough plants and seasonal temperatures.
D. Sheltered places like basements and barns.
9. Why is Iceland warming much faster than the rest of the northern hemisphere?
A. The loss of ice and snow cover.
B. A stable flow of warm air from the south.
C. Increased greenhouse gas emissions globally.
D. Its unique geographical location near the Arctic.
10. How do warmer temperatures directly affect mosquitoes?
A. They become more cold-resistant.
B. They migrate only to tropical regions.
C. They lose their ability to carry diseases.
D. They spread to more places and multiply faster.
11. What does the arrival of mosquitoes in Iceland suggest?
A. All cold-resistant species will now migrate to Iceland.
B. The ecological balance in the region may be disturbed.
C. Iceland’s climate will soon be similar to tropical regions.
D. Mosquito-borne diseases will immediately become widespread.
D
On September 12, 2025, Dr. Demis Hassabis, a top AI scientist and CEO of Google DeepMind, spoke at an ancient Roman theater in Athens, Greece. He shared an important idea: “learning how to learn” will be the most valuable skill for young people in the future.
Dr. Hassabis, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, explained that artificial intelligence (AI) is developing at an incredible speed. It is changing our lives so fast that we can hardly predict what the world will be like in ten years. However, one thing is certain: great changes are coming.
To adapt to these changes, students need to develop meta-skills (元技能). These are skills that help them learn how to learn. For example, they should know how to study new subjects efficiently, manage their time wisely, and think critically. With these abilities, they can keep learning throughout their lives.
AI can help people work faster and solve difficult problems. But it is also important not to rely too heavily on AI. Students should learn to think independently and improve their own learning abilities.
Many schools around the world are now preparing students for an AI-driven future. They are offering AI-related courses and encouraging students to explore new technologies. The aim is to help young people become creative and confident learners.
In short, as AI continues to develop, the ability to learn how to learn will become increasingly essential. By mastering this skill, students can stay curious, embrace changes, and achieve success in the future.
12. Why does the author mention Dr. Demis Hassabis’ speech in paragraph 1?
A. To highlight the rapid development of AI.
B. To introduce the main topic of the passage.
C. To emphasize the need for schools to offer AI-related courses.
D. To provide his background information as a famous scientist.
13. Which of the following belongs to meta-skills?
A. Organizing time in a wise way.
B. Using AI to complete tasks quickly.
C. Remembering English words easily.
D. Communicating with classmates effectively.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards AI?
A. Fully supportive.
B. Strongly opposed.
C. Cautiously balanced.
D. completely indifferent.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To describe how schools are changing their teaching methods.
B. To introduce Dr. Demis Hassabis and his achievements in AI.
C. To tell why “learning how to learn” is a crucial skill for the future.
D. To discuss the rapid development of AI and its potential dangers.

Moving to a new country is never easy, especially when you are only sixteen. I still remember the first day I walked into my new high school in Toronto. Everything felt unfamiliar — the lockers, the hallways, even the way students dressed. But what made me feel most out of place was the language. Although I had studied English for years in China, understanding fast-paced conversations filled with slang was a whole different challenge.
During lunch break, I sat alone in the cafeteria, quietly eating the sandwich my host mother had prepared. I watched groups of students laughing and chatting, wishing I could join them but not knowing how. Just then, a girl with curly red hair walked over and smiled at me. “Mind if I sit here?” she asked. I nodded shyly. She introduced herself as Emma and asked where I was from. When I said China, her eyes lit up. “That’s so cool! I’ve always wanted to learn about Chinese culture,” she said. We talked a little, but I struggled to find the right words, often pausing awkwardly. Still, Emma listened patiently.
Over the next few weeks, Emma often invited me to sit with her friends. They were kind, but I often felt like a silent observer. One day, the history teacher announced a group project about cultural traditions. Emma immediately turned to me and said, “You should be our group leader! You can tell us about Chinese festivals.” My heart raced. I wanted to share, but I was afraid my English wouldn’t be good enough. What if they couldn’t understand me? What if I embarrassed myself?
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Emma gave me an encouraging smile and whispered, “You can do this.”

【答案】Dear Zhang Lei,
I’m really worried about you since you entered Senior Two. You’ve become seriously addicted to your phone, which not only affects your class efficiency but also does harm to your physical and mental health.
I hope you can take my advice. First, put your phone away during classes and study time. Second, set a daily limit for using it and spend more time exercising or communicating with friends. I believe you can get rid of this bad habit and focus on your study and health.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 Emma gave me an encouraging smile and whispered, “You can do this.” Her words filled me with courage. I took a deep breath and started sharing Chinese festivals with my group members, focusing on Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival. When I got stuck on a word or paused awkwardly, Emma gently reminded me, and her friends nodded patiently. I showed them pictures of red envelopes and mooncakes, explaining their meanings in simple English. Gradually, I became more confident, speaking louder and more fluently than I had ever imagined.
After the presentation, the teacher asked the class to give their opinions. Many classmates raised their hands, praising my presentation for being interesting and informative. “I learned so much about Chinese traditions!” one student said. Our history teacher also smiled and praised me for my hard work and clear explanation. I looked at Emma, who gave me a big thumbs-up. At that moment, I felt a strong sense of belonging. I realized that with kindness and encouragement, I could overcome any difficulty in this new country.
