Dressed like a princess, Xiang Chenxi sets up her lights and camera and begins livestreaming. She greets her fans in a sweet, gentle voice just like any other live streamer, but unlike others, Xiang is a wheelchair user and has a breathing tube implanted in her throat.
“Hi, there! This is fairy Chenxi who loves handicrafts and life,” says the 30-year-old, with a bright smile. Behind her are shelves of clay figurines (粘土塑像) that she made. Xiang teaches people how to make such figurines through her livestreams.
The young woman from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province was diagnosed (诊断) at the age of 8 with a rare disease similar to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (肌萎缩侧索硬化症), after it was noticed that she often lost her balance while walking. As Xiang grew older, she started to find it harder and harder to move. Her muscles, including those that control her breathing, gradually became weaker.
“When I was a child, walking up and down the stairs was particularly hard for me and I couldn’t do any physical exercise. I couldn’t even walk while holding a glass of water,” Xiang said, adding that the feeling of powerlessness devoured her bit by bit, and in 2018 she lost the ability to walk. “But I didn’t feel sorry for myself all the time. Perhaps, I’m just a little fairy who has come down from heaven to the earthly world to go through some difficulties,” Xiang added cheerily.
She has never let the challenges she faces hold her back. Over the past 10 years, she has published several novels online and worked as a customer service assistant at an e-commerce platform. She saved up some money and bought herself an electric wheelchair, and with easier access to places, she can leave the house more often on her own and enjoy the scenery of nature, which has increased her love for life.

A. She suffers from a disability. B. She has a sweet voice.
C. She loves handicrafts and life. D. She is dressed like a princess.
42. Why did Xiang Chenxi start making clay models according to the passage?
A. To earn money for her medical treatment.
B. To overcome the feeling of being unable to do things.
C. Because her doctor recommended it as therapy.
D. Because she saw it was popular in livestreaming.
43. Which of the following best describes Xiang Chenxi?
A. Honest and kindhearted. B. Humorous and clever.
C. Optimistic and strong-willed. D. Generous and helpful.
44. How did buying an electric wheelchair influence Xiang Chenxi’s life?
A. It allowed her to start a new career as an online helper.
B. It enabled her to earn more money by writing stories.
C. It helped her regain the ability to walk gradually.
D. It gave her more independence and enhanced her love for life.
45. What is the text mainly about?
A. How one can overcome physical challenges. B. How to become a successful live streamer.
C. How a disabled live streamer embraces life. D. How to sell handicrafts through livestreams.

Though more than half the world is covered by ocean more than 200m deep—the point at which the sunlight gradually disappears and one enters the twilight zone—it was not until 1930 that humans reached the deep sea for the first time. Though scientists have since discovered amazing creatures and features, much is still waiting to be discovered.
The reaches of the sea below 6km are known as the hadal zone, taking their name from the underworld of the ancient Greeks: the depth makes sure it is forever dark, and that temperatures are only just above freezing. Yet we are discovering that if it is an uncomfortable space for humans, it is far from deserted. Four years ago, a live video feed (传送) of the Mariana Trench (马里亚纳海沟) from a remotely operated ship allowed ordinary viewers to see the rich, though “not very diverse”, life to be found down there. The area now enjoys protection, staying untouched after it was listed as one of the 27 national monuments.
Other parts of the deep sea are at immediate risk. Even as researchers increase their ability to explore this world, the race is on to use it. Greenpeace warned last year that 29 ocean-floor exploration licenses (许可证) had been given out, covering an area of 1.3 million sq km, which is very dangerous and will make the climate emergency worse by disturbing carbon stores in seafloor sediments (沉积物), as well as destroying barely explored habitats that might offer great scientific insights and even new medicines.
Though the U.N. is supposed to finish a global ocean agreement this year, many campaigners are pessimistic about the future of it offering the kind of protection that is needed. Governments must do better. To fail to reach the goal would not only put the habitats and creatures of the deep sea in danger, but humans too, although most of us are unlikely to risk taking a trip down there.
46 How can we describe the twilight zone according to the passage?
A. It is not deeper than 200m. B. It is out of humans’ reach.
C. There is not much sunlight. D. No creatures live in there.
47. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. The hadal zone. B. The twilight zone. C. The ancient Greece. D. The underworld.
48. Why does the author mention Greenpeace’s warning in the passage?
A. To inform readers that the deep sea still has many undiscovered things.
B. To remind people that the deep sea is at risk of overdevelopment.
C. To encourage people to speed up the exploration of the deep sea.
D. To suggest that humans should take risks to explore the deep sea.
49. Regarding the current deep-sea exploration, what possible damage to the global environment is mentioned in the passage?
A. It may lead to a rise in sea temperatures. B. It might reduce the sunlight reaching the twilight zone.
C. It could disturb carbon stores in seafloor sediments. D. It will immediately destroy all deep-sea habitats.
50. Which statement best sums up the last paragraph?
A. Development of the deep sea is beneficial to humans. B. Governments must cooperate to fully explore the sea.
C. Few of us have the opportunity to protect the deep sea. D. Proper sea protection is essential for both nature and humans.
D
Holidays are not what they used to be. Everyone has once in a while avoided work. Now many workers are avoiding holidays, too. Plenty of people will at least check emails while on the beach. And some individuals might find a little bit of work a break from their time off. Even the most troublesome colleagues can be more relaxing to deal with than one’s own children.
In contrast, a few workers find ways to delete the work email app from their phones. Time away from work serves to clear the mind. Plenty of jobs now require a bit of creative ideas. A period away from the office helps — especially when it’s a real break, with a change of scenery away from home. Breaking all links to your daily tasks can be helpful for managers too. Refreshed workers are less likely to burn out.
What is the right balance? Nobody suggests working hard on holiday at the same pace as in the office. But most people will conclude that if a few minutes spent answering emails can save a helpless colleague hours of work, it would seem unfriendly not to help out. If nothing else, keeping even a slight eye on things can make a return to the job — whether after a week off or even a month — easier to handle. Who wants to deal with thousands of unread emails on their return?
An interesting possibility is that the rise of remote work will generate a new type of holiday. One executive admitted that, having fled to a Greek island for a couple of weeks in the past, he is now spending most of the summer there. He is toiling a bit less than full whack during the weeks he is meant to be working — but still doing a few hours of work every day even on his days off.
51. Why do some workers delete the work email app?
A. To have fun. B. To avoid work. C. To clear data. D. To get inspired.
52. How can staying connected with work during holidays be beneficial?
A. It can make your return to work less stressful. B. It can let you feel less burnt-out.
C. It can change your view about work. D. It can make others out of work.
53. What do the underlined words “toiling a bit less than full whack” mean?
A. Taking on less duties. B. Extending working hours.
C. Increasing efficiency. D. Lowering work intensity.
54. What does the author suggest about doing a little work during holidays?
A. It should be completely avoided to achieve a real break.
B. It is often necessary and can be considerate in some situations.
C. It will definitely increase one’s stress and lead to burnout.
D. It is only beneficial for managers to stay in control.
55. Which sentence can best express the main idea of this text?
A. It’s a trend to work a little while taking time off. B. It’s better to stay away from work while on leave.
C. Working on leave will help keep the pace of work. D. Remote work will lead to a new type of vacation.
What’s the point of studying the humanities This question has been popping up on social media, especially with the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek.
As a Malay language teacher at a university in Nanning, Guangxi, I feel I should share what I think. The fact that I am working in China shows that the country still values the humanities, even though some universities have reportedly reduced their student intakes (招生人数) in these fields.
Some people say the humanities lead to “limited job chances”. But I must ask: Have we explored all possibilities? From my teaching experience, the humanities provide rich opportunities across many industries. The challenge is that students often lack the creativity to turn what they’ve learned into a career path. For example, most linguistics (语言学) majors think only of becoming teachers or translators. They don’t often consider roles such as voice app actors, computational linguists, user experience researchers, content strategists or social media analysts (分析师).
Studies have shown the significant value of humanities graduates. A 2023 report from the UK’s Higher Education Policy Institute found a strong link between the skills of humanities graduates and those demanded by employers across industries. Eight of the ten fastest-growing sectors in the UK now hire more humanities graduates than graduates from other fields.
This shows that humanities graduates bring special qualities to the workplace — qualities that differ from those taught in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). They tend to be more open-minded, able to see the big picture, and quick to adapt to change.
What’s more, the 2023 Future of Jobs Report by the World Economic Forum said that critical and creative thinking are among the most important skills for workers now and in the future. And these skills are central to humanities education. Therefore, we must not downplay (低估) the importance of the humanities. Throughout history, the humanities have played a major role in shaping civilized human beings. In the end, they are what give life meaning and keep us from becoming like robots.
56. Explain the meaning of the underlined phrase “popping up” in paragraph 1 in your own words.(no more than 5 words)

57. What problem do humanities students often have, according to the author?(no more than 10 words)

58. Why might the skills taught in humanities remain very important in the age of AI, according to the text?(no more than 20 words)
________________________________________________________
59. What is the author’s attitude to humanities in the passage?(no more than 8 words)

60. Which subjects have you chosen to learn? Why did you choose them?(no more than 25words)

46. How can we describe the twilight zone according to the passage?
C 47. A 48. B 49. C 50. D

根据第一段“Though more than half the world is covered by ocean more than 200m deep—the point at which the sunlight gradually disappears and one enters the twilight zone—it was not until 1930 that humans reached the deep sea for the first time.(尽管世界上一半以上的区域被深度超过200米的海洋所覆盖——在这个深度,阳光逐渐消失,人们进入微光带——但直到1930年人类才首次抵达深海)”可知,微光带的阳光不多。
根据第二段“The reaches of the sea below 6km are known as the hadal zone, taking their name from the underworld of the ancient Greeks: the depth makes sure it is forever dark, and that temperatures are only just above freezing.(6公里以下的海域被称为超深渊带,其名字来源于古希腊神话中的冥界:这样的深度确保了它永远黑暗,温度仅略高于冰点)”可知,这里说的是超深渊带的情况,所以“it”指代的是超深渊带(The hadal zone)。故选A项。
根据第三段“Greenpeace warned last year that 29 ocean-floor exploration licenses (许可证) had been given out, covering an area of 1.3 million sq km, which is very dangerous and will make the climate emergency worse by disturbing carbon stores in seafloor sediments (沉积物), as well as destroying barely explored habitats that might offer great scientific insights and even new medicines.(绿色和平组织去年警告称,已经发放了29份海底勘探许可证,覆盖面积达130万平方公里,这非常危险,会扰乱海底沉积物中的碳储存,使气候危机恶化,还会破坏几乎未被探索过的栖息地,而这些栖息地可能会带来重大的科学发现,甚至可能发现新的药物)”可知,作者提到绿色和平组织的警告是为了提醒人们深海面临过度开发的风险。
根据第三段“Greenpeace warned last year that 29 ocean-floor exploration licenses (许可证) had been given out, covering an area of 1.3 million sq km, which is very dangerous and will make the climate emergency worse by disturbing carbon stores in seafloor sediments (沉积物)(绿色和平组织去年发出警告,已有29份海底勘探许可证被发放,覆盖面积达130万平方千米,这非常危险,会通过扰乱海底沉积物中的碳储存使气候危机恶化)”可知,当前深海探索对全球环境可能造成的破坏是扰乱海底沉积物中的碳储存。
根据最后一段“Governments must do better. To fail to reach the goal would not only put the habitats and creatures of the deep sea in danger, but humans too, although most of us are unlikely to risk taking a trip down there.(各国政府必须做得更好。如果不能实现这一目标,不仅会使深海的栖息地和生物处于危险之中,人类也会面临危险,尽管我们大多数人不太可能冒险前往那里)”可知,最后一段强调了适当的海洋保护对自然和人类都至关重要。故选D项。

C Increasing efficiency.
51. B 52. A 53. D 54. B 55. A

根据文章第二段“In contrast, a few workers find ways to delete the work email app from their phones. Time away from work serves to clear the mind. (相反,也有部分员工会想办法删除手机上的工作邮件应用。远离工作有助于清空思绪。)”可知,一些员工删除手机上的工作邮件应用是为了避免工作。故选B。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“keeping even a slight eye on things can make a return to the job — whether after a week off or even a month — easier to handle. (至少,即便稍加关注工作进展,也能让重返岗位——无论是休假一周还是一个月——变得更易应对。)”可知,假期时关注工作是为了让重返工作岗位时变得更易应对,压力更小,避免堆积过多未处理的事务。故选A。
根据划线句前文的内容“One executive admitted that, having fled to a Greek island for a couple of weeks in the past, he is now spending most of the summer there. (一位高管坦言,过去他只会逃往希腊小岛暂住两周,如今却几乎整个夏季都待在那里。)”可知,划线句前文提到这位高管在希腊小岛度假,且根据划线句后文“but still doing a few hours of work every day even on his days off (但即使在休息日,每天仍会处理几小时工作。)”
根据文章第三段“But most people will conclude that if a few minutes spent answering emails can save a helpless colleague hours of work, it would seem unfriendly not to help out. (但多数人会认为:如果花几分钟回复邮件能帮束手无策的同事节省数小时工作量,袖手旁观未免显得不近人情。)”可知,作者借大多数人的观点来表达,如果花几分钟回复邮件能帮束手无策的同事是可以的,故可推知,故作者认为假期做一点工作是必要的,是体贴的。故选B。
【55题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Holidays are not what they used to be. Everyone has once in a while avoided work. Now many workers are avoiding holidays, too. (假期已不同于往昔。每个人都曾偶尔逃避工作。如今,许多员工也开始逃避休假了。)”并通读全文可知,文章先指出“假期已不同以往”,许多人会在休假时工作;接着讨论完全断开联系的好处与适度保持联系的便利;最后提到远程工作可能催生新型假期模式。故A项“It’s a trend to work a little while taking time off. (休假时稍微工作正在成为一种趋势。)”能概括文章主旨。故选A。
This shows that humanities graduates bring special qualities to the workplace — qualities that differ from those taught in STEM (science technology, engineering and math).
________________________________________________________
57. What problem do humanities students often have, according to the author?(no more than 10 words)
________________________________________________________
58. Why might the skills taught in humanities remain very important in the age of AI, according to the text?(no more than 20 words)
________________________________________________________
59 What is the author’s attitude to humanities in the passage?(no more than 8 words)
________________________________________________________
60. Which subjects have you chosen to learn? Why did you choose them?(no more than 25words)
________________________________________________________
56. Appearing (frequently / a lot). / Showing up (often).
57. They lack creativity in career planning. / They can’t creatively turn their knowledge into jobs.
58. Because key skills like critical and creative thinking are what AI cannot easily copy or do. / Because the most important future skills (critical/creative thinking) are taught in humanities. / Because AI is not good at the skills that humanities focus on.
59. Humanities education remains highly valuable. / We should not underestimate the value of humanities. / Humanities are still important and useful.
60. I have chosen physics and chemistry, mainly because I find them fascinating and beneficial to my future engineering studies.
根据第一段“What’s the point of studying the humanities (人文学科)? This question has been popping up on social media, especially with the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek.(学习人文学科的意义是什么?这个问题在社交媒体上一直____,尤其是随着ChatGPT和DeepSeek等人工智能工具的兴起)”可知,随着AI工具兴起,该问题在社交媒体上不断出现。所以“popping up”意思是“出现”,答案为Appearing (frequently / a lot). / Showing up (often).
根据第三段“From my teaching experience, the humanities provide rich opportunities across many industries. The challenge is that students often lack the creativity to turn what they’ve learned into a career path.(以我的教学经验来看,人文学科在许多行业都提供了丰富的机会。问题在于学生们常常缺乏将所学转化为职业道路的创造力)”可知,人文学科学生常面临的问题是在职业规划方面缺乏创造力。答案为They lack creativity in career planning. / They can’t creatively turn their knowledge into jobs.
根据最后一段“What’s more, the 2023 Future of Jobs Report by the World Economic Forum said that critical and creative thinking are among the most important skills for workers now and in the future. And these skills are central to humanities education.(此外,世界经济论坛2023年《未来就业报告》称,批判性和创造性思维是现在及未来劳动者最重要的技能之一。而这些技能正是人文学科教育的核心)”可知,在AI时代,人文学科所教授的关键技能如批判性和创造性思维,是AI难以轻易复制或具备的,所以依然重要。答案为Because key skills like critical and creative thinking are what AI cannot easily copy or do. / Because the most important future skills (critical/creative thinking) are taught in humanities. / Because AI is not good at the skills that humanities focus on.
通读全文以及根据最后一段“Therefore, we must not downplay (低估) the importance of the humanities. Throughout history, the humanities have played a major role in shaping civilized human beings. In the end, they are what give life meaning and keep us from becoming like robots.(因此,我们绝不能低估人文学科重要性。纵观历史,人文学科在塑造文明人类的过程中发挥了重要作用。归根结底,正是人文学科赋予了生命意义,防止我们变得像机器人一样)”可知,文章整体阐述了人文学科在多个方面的重要价值,如提供就业机会、培养独特特质以及教授关键技能等,由此可推断作者认为人文学科教育仍然极具价值,不应被低估。答案为Humanities education remains highly valuable. / We should not underestimate the value of humanities. / Humanities are still important and useful.
I have chosen physics and chemistry, mainly because I find them fascinating and beneficial to my future engineering studies.

I’m very glad to hear that you are coming to our school to learn Chinese for a year. Here I’ll give you an introduction of our school first.
Our school has a history of more than one hundred years and consists of 48 classes. Over 300 teachers are working here. It is located at the foot of a hill and a small river runs through our campus. I believe you’ll enjoy your life here.
However, you will face some difficulties if you study in our school. Firstly, you will have difficulty in your study because we speak Chinese all day long. Secondly, you will suffer from homesickness because of living far away from your country. I think you can learn some basic daily expressions in Chinese, and if possible, read some books written in simple Chinese. But don’t worry. With our help, you are sure to enjoy your stay here.
Looking forward to your coming!
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin
