My family first moved to Colorado 22 years ago. Los Angeles was too expensive and it was difficult to find well-paying jobs and affordable housing. Colorado became our next dream place. Settling into a small town in the Front Range, my parents found hard jobs.
Growing up in this small town, I remember my parents working hard to get past the language barrier. My mom, especially, tried her best to ensure she knew all that she needed to know about like my parent-teacher meetings and extracurricular (课外的) activities. One of those extracurricular activities that I signed up for was football. At that age, football was cool and all, but I was more into playing Pokémon and other video games. Football didn’t draw me in.
Big football tournaments (联赛) would come around like the World Cup, the Copa América and the Gold Cup, and the Mexican National Team would play in these tournaments. I would sit there in our living room and unmindfully watch the games while my parents would go crazy with enthusiasm ( 热情). I would sit there and play my game. My dad would look over and tell me that I should be paying attention carefully to the game and that I should care more about whether Mexico would win the match than my video games.
Both of my parents’ workspaces were crowded (占满的) with other workers. My mom worked with people from all over Latin America. Everyone’s topic of choice at work would always turn to how their national football team was doing. It was a way to show pride in the countries where they had grown up.
I grew up loving football more and more. The more I learned about my Mexican roots (根), the more I tried to find ways to express pride in them in the United States.

If you’re someone who has been worrying about the rise of the robots—hold on there just a second, and let them help you impress your friends with some newfound skills in a foreign language. Using artificial intelligence (AI) to help us learn and improve those skills is not new—some of the online language tools we turn to every day are powered by AI.
But as new technologies flood into the market, now is a great time to take advantage of the tech. And according to experts, these tools aren’t replacing teachers — they’re making their lives easier. One of the things that stops some of us from practising speaking in a new language is a lack of self-confidence. AI can help — chatbots don’t judge (评价) you. Of course, teachers don’t either, but for some people, communicating with a bot may remove that fear of failure or shyness.
The latest chatbots use something called natural language processing that allows them to understand human speech or writing, providing a human-like response right away. While chatbots are extremely useful for learners working solely, teachers can also offer course material and ask an AI system to produce personalized textbooks for groups of students. The AI can also provide feedback (反馈) in seconds — gone are the days of waiting a week for work to be graded.
Past online language tools and games were able to tell you when you were wrong, but they weren’t always able to explain why. Now, not only has that changed, but the explanations are detailed and immediate. But this is not to underestimate (低估) the role of the teachers, who can use the technology to help learn more about the strengths and weaknesses of their students and personalize their teaching.
So, if you want to impress your friends with your perfect speech, don’t be afraid of AI. Just think of it as a useful tool for both teachers and language learners, which will give you more time and space to enjoy learning something new!
8. In which aspect does AI mainly help language learners according to Paragraph 2?
A. Building their confidence. B. Improving time management.
C. Remembering more words. D. Getting useful learning methods.
9. What is the influence of AI on teachers?
A. Replacing their jobs. B. Making teaching easier.
C. Increasing work pressure. D. Collecting more feedback.
10. What does the underlined word “solely” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Happily. B. Quickly. C. Singly. D. Secretly.
11. What does the author think of the teachers’ roles in the age of AI?
A. Teachers are still important.
B. Teachers will give way to robots.
C. Experienced teachers are more popular.
D. Teachers are better than robots in language learning
A 9. B 10. C 11. A

由文章第二段中“One of the things that stops some of us from practising speaking in a new language is a lack of self-confidence. AI can help — chatbots don’t judge (评价) you. (阻碍我们中一些人练习说一门新语言的原因之一是缺乏自信。人工智能可以提供帮助——聊天机器人不会评判你。)”可知,AI主要通过建立学习者的自信来帮助语言学习者。故选A。
由文章第二段中“But as new technologies flood into the market, now is a great time to take advantage of the tech. And according to experts, these tools aren’t replacing teachers — they’re making their lives easier. (但随着新技术涌入市场,现在是利用这些技术的好时机。据专家称,这些工具并没有取代教师,而是让他们的生活更轻松。)”可知,AI技术使得教师的工作变得更加轻松。故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第三段中“The latest chatbots use something called natural language processing that allows them to understand human speech or writing, providing a human-like response right away. While chatbots are extremely useful for learners working solely, teachers can also offer course material and ask an AI system to produce personalized textbooks for groups of students. (最新的聊天机器人使用一种叫做自然语言处理的东西,使它们能够理解人类的语言或文字,并立即提供类似人类的回应。虽然聊天机器人对solely学习的学习者非常有用,但教师也可以提供课程材料,并要求人工智能系统为学生群体制作个性化教科书。)”可知,此处意指聊天机器人对于单独工作的学习者非常有用。solely在这里的意思是“单独地”。A. Happily高兴地;B. Quickly快速地;C. If you’re planning to go on a diet, or if you suffer from serious conditions like diabetes (糖尿病), knowing exactly what and how much you’re eating is important. In this day and age, we have calorie and nutrition calculators even on our smartphones, but they act only as guides, whereas a famous company’s revolutionary new device, CaloRieco, actually analyzes the food on your plate and provides accurate (correct and true in every detail) information in just a few seconds.
You’ve probably used caloric calculators before, and you know that they only offer general information. For example, a calculator will tell you the average number of calories in a hamburger, but it can’t tell you exactly how many calories are in the hamburger. The same goes for nutrients like protein or fat. And this is what makes the new CaloRieco so special.
The spokesman for the company said that its outstanding invention is aimed at dieters and diabetes sufferers, both of whom make up a sizable market. Displayed at a recent tech show, CaloRieco is a high-tech device that uses light reflection technology to determine the nutritional values of almost any food and also provide accurate calorie estimates. All you have to do is put your plate in the box-shaped device and wait between 10 and 20 seconds for it to analyze all the food.
Once it’s done analyzing the various ingredients (烹饪材料) in your meal, CaloRieco shows the number of calories, as well as the nutritional content on an LED display. According to the company the device is able to recognize the vast majority of foods, except soups and very dark dishes.
CaloRieco can also connect to your smartphone via an app, and send all the data about analyzed foods to your handheld device, so you can access it whenever you need.
Unfortunately you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at the show is just a prototype (样机) which needs to be improved. It’s expected to be a hit in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery.
12. What is the advantage of CaloRieco?
A. It uses light reflection technology.
B. It offers general information of food.
C. It is a high-tech device working as a guide.
D. It can present the exact calorie of analyzed food.
13. According to the text, what is right about CaloRieco?
A. It needs a long time to analyze the food.
B. It can show the food data on the smartphone directly.
C. It can count the calories of all foods on your plate.
D. It may be popular among dieters and diabetes sufferers.
14. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The smartphone. B. The app. C. The data. D. The food.
15. What can we infer about CaloRieco from the last paragraph?
A. It’s hopeful. B. It’s perfect. C. It’s costly. D. It’s available.
D 13. D 14. C 15. A

根据第三段“The spokesman for the company said that its outstanding invention is aimed at dieters and diabetes sufferers, both of whom make up a sizable market. Displayed at a recent tech show, CaloRieco is a high-tech device that uses light reflection technology to determine the nutritional values of almost any food and also provide accurate calorie estimates.(该公司发言人表示,该公司的杰出发明面向减肥者和糖尿病患者,这两个群体都占据了相当大的市场。CaloRieco是一种高科技设备,它使用光反射技术来确定几乎所有食物的营养价值,并提供准确的卡路里估算)”可知,CaloRicco的目标顾客是减肥者和糖尿病患者,因为它可以为这些人提供食物的准确分析数据。由此可知,这款产品在减肥者和糖尿病患者中可能很受欢迎。故选D。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在的前半句话“CaloRieco can also connect to your smartphone via an app, and send all the data about analyzed foods to your handheld device(CaloRieco还可以通过应用程序连接到你的智能手机,并将有关分析食品的所有数据发送到您的手持设备)”可知,CaloRieco还可以通过应用程序连接到您的智能手机,并把分析出来的数据发送到你的设备中,这样无论你什么时候需要,都能查看数据。
根据最后一段“Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at the show is just a prototype (样机) which needs to be improved. It’s expected to be a hit in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery.(不幸的是,你需要再等一段时间才能拿到自己的CaloRieco,因为展会上展示的设备只是一个需要改进的原型。预计它将在未来几年内大受欢迎,但价格仍然是个谜)”可知,这个产品还需要进一步的改善,但是在未来它会很受欢迎。由此推知,这个产品还是很有前景的。故选A。

根据上文“While you may work hard to group, reuse, and repurpose, it can be sad when your efforts seem fruitless because of your neighbors’ carelessness(尽管你可能会努力进行分类、再利用和重新利用,但由于邻居的粗心大意,你的努力似乎毫无结果,这会让人感到难过)”以及下文“However, using these ways can help encourage your neighbors to take action(然而,使用这些方法可以帮助鼓励你的邻居采取行动)”可知,上文提到努力无果会让人难过,下文说用一些方法能鼓励邻居行动,说明让邻居理解为什么要回收利用并不简单,与G项“Getting your community to understand why we should recycle isn’t simple(让你的社区理解我们为什么要回收利用并不简单)”表达的含义一致,故选G项。
根据上文“Place recycling bins next to trash cans in busy areas such as parks and parking lots. Try using bins with different colors.(在公园和停车场等繁忙区域,在垃圾桶旁边放置回收箱。尝试使用不同颜色的回收箱)”可知,这里说的是放置回收箱并使用不同颜色的回收箱,可推理出这样做的好处是能让邻居快速知道不同垃圾该放哪里,与F项“It helps your neighbors quickly know where to put different wastes(它能帮助你的邻居快速知道把不同的垃圾放在哪里)”表达的意思一致,故选F项。
【18题详解】
根据下文“Organize an activity to bring the community together while teaching them about the advantages of recycling. Explain how developing these small habits can help our planet(组织一个活动,把社区的人聚集在一起,同时向他们传授回收利用的好处。解释养成这些小习惯如何能帮助我们的地球)”可知,这里说的是通过组织活动向社区的人传授回收利用的好处,也就是对社区进行教育,与A项“Educate your community(教育你的社区)”表达的含义一致,故选A项。
【19题详解】
根据上文“To encourage participation (参与), offer rewards for recycling efforts. Organize a friendly competition between neighborhoods or streets, and record recycling rates over a month. Encourage teams to collect lights, plastic bottles, glass bottles, and jars. To increase the competition, create a leaderboard that’s updated weekly and shown to the community.(为了鼓励参与,对回收利用的努力给予奖励。组织邻里或街道之间的友好竞赛,并记录一个月的回收率。鼓励团队收集电灯、塑料瓶、玻璃瓶和罐子。为了增加竞争性,创建一个每周更新并向社区展示的排行榜)”可知,这里说的是组织竞赛并创建排行榜,这样做能在这个月里一直鼓励参与者,与E项“This can keep participants encouraged throughout the month.(这可以让参与者在整个月里都受到鼓励)”表达的意思一致,故选E项。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Start small, make a big difference(从小事做起,产生大影响)”以及下文“Start with one or two of these ideas and build from there. As more people join, your community’s influence will grow(从这些想法中的一两个开始,然后在此基础上发展。随着越来越多的人加入,你们社区的影响力将会增强)”可知,这里说的是从小事做起,因为改变习惯需要时间,所以要慢慢来,与B项“Remember, changing habits takes time(记住,改变习惯需要时间)”表达的含义一致,故选B项。

【答案】参考范文1:
Dear Jim,
I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a conflict with your classmate. Starting high school is a big change, and it’s totally normal to face small misunderstandings with new people, so don’t feel alone in this.
Here are a few suggestions for you. First, try to talk to your classmate actively. Choose a quiet moment, like after class, and share your feelings calmly instead of blaming. Listening to their side is also important, which might help you see the conflict from a new angle. Second, put yourself in their shoes. Maybe they were stressed about studies or had a bad day, so their words weren’t meant to hurt you.
I believe these steps will help you fix things. I’m looking forward to hearing that you two have become friends again soon!
Best regards,
Li Hua
Dear Jim,
I understand how upset you must be about the conflict with your classmate. High school classrooms are full of people with different habits, so small conflicts sometimes happen — there’s no need to feel down.
Let me share two tips with you. First, find common ground. If you both like sports or math, ask them to join you for a game or study together. Shared activities can quickly ease tension. Second, learn to be more tolerant. Everyone has their own way of doing things. Therefore, focusing on their strengths instead of small flaws will make your relationship smoother.
I hope you’ll give these ideas a try. I’m sure you’ll soon build a good relationship with your classmate and enjoy your high school life more!
Best regards,
Li Hua

Final exams were approaching, and everyone in school was excited about vacations. We were dreaming of far-off destinations, our minds filled with images of thrilling adventures.
After school on Friday, on my way home, I ran into my best friend. Enthusiastic about the vacations, I asked him about his plans. His eyes twinkled brightly as he replied, “I’m going to visit my grandparents with my parents for a week.”
“Don’t you ever get tired of going to the same place year after year? I remember, every year, your family takes 7 to 10 days off to head back to your native village,” I asked, raising an eyebrow in curiosity.
“Oh, not at all! That’s the absolute best time of the year for me! Being with my folks in the village is just amazing.” His face beamed with joy as he continued, "In the village, I get to meet so many wonderful people, and everyone there is so kind and welcoming. Our neighborhood crew is tight! We’re always hanging out together, you know? Just running wild, chilling by the lake, or bouncing between each other’s houses. Honestly, I know what really matters about these village trips. It’s not the cool places we see — it’s spending time with the people I love. That’s the real treasure of life.”
His words made me recall my own grandparents. I realized I hadn’t seen them for years. But still, it’s a pleasure to be there. … we had big long gardens and a big multi-story house.
The next day, over breakfast, I mustered up the courage and asked my parents, “Can we visit grandparents this summer after exams?” Dad replied hesitantly, “Oh, that’s unexpected.” Mom was surprised. “Well, you know it gets really hot there this time of year.” After a short pause, Dad gave a small sigh and met my hopeful gaze. “However,” he said, “if you perform well in exams, we’ll make the trip.”
For the next six weeks, I threw myself completely into my studies. My mom was amazed by this sudden transformation in me. Soon came the long-awaited exam results.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I rushed home and immediately handed my parents my score card and a note with “PLEASE.” This time, they instantly agreed. The next day, we set out for our hometown. Every one, be it relatives or neighbors, greeted us with smiles, treating me like their own son. Every day brought new happiness –- digging with Grandpa in the garden, playing games with cousins until sunset, roaming around familiar streets with loved ones and even joining the local kids in their football matches. The days passed as we had a wonderful time together. Truth be told, everything was more fun in a big family. When departure day came, my heart ached.
I saw my mom had tears in her eyes when leaving them. She wiped them away and smiled, saying, “I didn’t realize how much I missed the village until now. It’s not just a place; it’s where our roots are.” As we drove away, I felt a mix of excitement and nostalgia. I realized that the real adventure wasn’t about exploring far-off places but about reconnecting with family and our heritage. This trip wasn’t just for me; it was a reminder for all of us that family is the true treasure of life. From then on, visiting Grandma and Grandpa became our annual tradition, a time to cherish love, laughter, and the simple joys of being together.

A Teachers are still important.
B. Teachers will give way to robots.
C. Experienced teachers are more popular.
D. Teachers are better than robots in language learning
D
Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at the show is just a prototype (样机) which needs to be improved. It’s expected to be a hit in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery.
