Back then, we lived at our grandparents’ house in Oceanside, California. Our financial situation became increasingly strained after my father, who had dedicated over two decades to serving in the U.S. Air Force, honorably retired and subsequently encountered challenges in securing a stable position in the civilian workforce. We were also struggling to find an affordable place to call our own. It would have been easy to give in to frustration. But mom had other ideas, using the situation to give my brother Jess and me fond memories that would affect our perspective forever. However, I only appreciated the full extent of her wisdom many years later. Once or twice a week, she would lead us to the bus stop, and from there we would “see the world”. The public transportation system was extensive, and with one ticket we could ride all day. My mom studied the routes carefully and guided us to a variety of destinations. Among our favorites was the mall in Carlsbad. At its center stood a glass clock tower with gears (齿轮) that rolled plastic balls along rails, bouncing them onto drums and ramps, then lifting them up again to repeat the cycle. The sight always drew a small crowd, mostly children. On other days, we took the bus to Strand Beach, where we watched ships in the distance and heard helicopters and aircraft soaring overhead toward the naval (海军的) base at Camp Pendleton. Every trip we took felt like a grand expedition, and I was grateful to my mom for making that difficult period so enjoyable. Eventually, my father found a steady job, and we moved into a home in the countryside. My mom did more than distract us from our troubles. She instilled in us enthusiasm for keeping our eyes open and appreciating the world that was ours without having to really pay anything. Most importantly, she showed us that regardless of where we were, and what we were going through, there was something we could smile about somewhere. 24. Why did the family face difficulties? A. The father lost his job in the U.S. Air Force. B. The family had no fixed place of residence. C. They lived far away from the city. D. They lacked financial stability. 25. What was the mother’s primary purpose of the trip? A. To build a positive attitude to the world. B. To promote her husband at the naval base. C. To find a new home in the countryside. D. To explore job opportunities in Carlsbad. 26. What does the author most appreciate about his mom now? A. Her knowledge of public transportation. B Her skill in planning detailed travel routes. C. Her wisdom in shaping their outlook on life. D. Her patience during their financial struggles. 27. Which word best describes the mother? A. Ambitious. B. Resourceful. C. Adventurous. D. Protective. D 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第一段中“Our financial situation became increasingly strained after my father, who had dedicated over two decades to serving in the U.S. Air Force, honorably retired and subsequently encountered challenges in securing a stable position in the civilian workforce. We were also struggling to find an affordable place to call our own. (父亲在美国空军服役二十余年,光荣退役后,却难以在民用领域找到一份稳定的工作。自那以后,家里的经济状况愈发拮据,我们也一直苦于找不到一处能负担得起的安身之所)”可知,这个家庭面临困难是因为他们缺乏经济稳定性。故选D。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“But mom had other ideas, using the situation to give my brother Jess and me fond memories that would affect our perspective forever. However, I only appreciated the full extent of her wisdom many years later. (但母亲却另有想法,她借着这样的处境,为我和弟弟杰西创造了温馨的回忆,而这些回忆也彻底改变了我们看待世界的视角。只是这份智慧的深意,我直到多年后才真正体会到)”及最后一段“My mom did more than distract us from our troubles. She instilled in us enthusiasm for keeping our eyes open and appreciating the world that was ours without having to really pay anything. Most importantly, she showed us that regardless of where we were, and what we were going through, there was something we could smile about somewhere. (母亲做的不仅仅是分散我们的注意力,让我们远离烦恼。她给我们灌输了睁大眼睛欣赏这个属于我们的世界的热情,而不需要付出任何代价。最重要的是,她告诉我们,无论我们在哪里,无论我们正在经历什么,总有一些事情是值得我们微笑的)”可推知,母亲旅行的主要目的是培养对世界的积极态度。故选A。 根据第二段中“But mom had other ideas, using the situation to give my brother Jess and me fond memories that would affect our perspective forever. However, I only appreciated the full extent of her wisdom many years later. (但母亲却另有想法,她借着这样的处境,为我和弟弟杰西创造了温馨的回忆,而这些回忆也彻底改变了我们看待世界的视角。只是这份智慧的深意,我直到多年后才真正体会到)”及最后一段中“Most importantly, she showed us that regardless of where we were, and what we were going through, there was something we could smile about somewhere. (最重要的是,她告诉我们,无论我们在哪里,无论我们正在经历什么,总有一些事情是值得我们微笑的)”可知,作者现在最欣赏母亲的是她在塑造他们人生观方面的智慧。故选C。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“But mom had other ideas, using the situation to give my brother Jess and me fond memories that would affect our perspective forever. (但母亲却另有想法,她借着这样的处境,为我和弟弟杰西创造了温馨的回忆,而这些回忆也彻底改变了我们看待世界的视角)”以及第三段中“Once or twice a week, she would lead us to the bus stop, and from there we would “see the world”. The public transportation system was extensive, and with one ticket we could ride all day. My mom studied the routes carefully and guided us to a variety of destinations. (她每周会带我们一两次去公交车站,从那里我们可以“看世界”。公共交通系统很发达,一张票我们可以坐一整天。母亲仔细研究了路线,并引导我们前往各种目的地)”结合全文内容可知,母亲在家庭经济困难的情况下,利用公共交通系统,带孩子们去不同的地方,给孩子们留下了美好的回忆,塑造了孩子们积极的人生观。由此推知,母亲是足智多谋的。故选B。 C Understanding a simple-looking sentence like “I read this article yesterday” actually requires complex computation (计算): a subject (“I”) performed an action (“read”) on an object (“article”) at a specific time (“yesterday”). But the human brain routinely does this work nearly instantly based on grammatical rules, says linguist Andrea E. Martin. His team has now found that the brain accommodates grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence. For a recent study in PLOS Biology, the researchers observed variations in Dutch-speaking participants’ brain waves while they listened to a Dutch audiobook. To visualize these changes, the scientists used a metric (衡量标准) quantifying how many new“predictions” the brain makes of words that could come next. This framework was then tested against three different parsing (句法分析的) strategies that illustrate how the brain builds information over time. Previous English-based studies concluded in favor of a model where listeners “wait and see” how each phrase ends before interpreting it. But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strongly toward a predictive model; participants tended to finish each phrase in their head before it was complete. A third model, in which listeners wait for all phrases before interpreting any part, is seldom used in either language. In Dutch, verbs sometimes come near the end of a sentence, explains study author Cas W. Coopmans. For instance, “because I ate a cookie with chocolate” in Dutch would be “because I a cookie with chocolate ate”. Listeners would have to wait long for the verb, so predictive processing becomes more natural. Neither strategy is “better or worse”, Coopmans adds. It is simply suited to the properties of each language. The findings support the need for more diversity in linguistic models, says Jixing Li, a linguist at City University of Hong Kong. If studies are done only in English speakers, crucial differences will be missed. Diversifying research, Martin says, will help capture how the brain understands the structured meaning and social utility of language. 28. What does Martin’s team discover about the brain? A. It interprets words randomly. B. It adapts to grammar rules. C. It favors grammatical changes. D. It ignores sentence structures. 29. What model do Dutch speakers prefer? A. Waiting for full phrases. B. Predicting phrase endings. C. Ignoring verb positions. D. Following English strategies. 30. Why is predictive processing natural for Dutch? A. Its verbs occasionally appear late. B. It has simpler grammatical rules. C. It uses common vocabulary. D. Its sentences are generally longer. 31. What do the findings stress? A. English is the best study language. B. Dutch is much harder to process. C. People ignore social language use. D. Linguistic models need diversity. B 29. B 30. A 31. 根据第一段“His team has now found that the brain accommodates grammatical differences across languages by adjusting how it processes each sentence.(他的团队现已发现,大脑通过调整处理每个句子的方式来适应不同语言间的语法差异)”可知,Martin的团队发现大脑能够适应语法规则。 根据第三段“But the Dutch speakers in Martin’s study leaned strongly toward a predictive model; participants tended to finish each phrase in their head before it was complete.(但Martin研究中的荷兰语使用者强烈倾向于一种预测模型;参与者往往在短语完整说完之前就在脑海中补全它)”可知,荷兰语使用者更喜欢预测短语结尾的模型。 根据第四段“In Dutch, verbs sometimes come near the end of a sentence, explains study author Cas W. Coopmans. For instance, “because I ate a cookie with chocolate” in Dutch would be “because I a cookie with chocolate ate”. Listeners would have to wait long for the verb, so predictive processing becomes more natural.(研究作者卡斯・W・库普曼斯解释道,在荷兰语中,动词有时会出现在句子末尾。比如,英语里 “因为我吃了一块巧克力饼干” 这句话,在荷兰语中的语序会是 “因为我一块巧克力饼干吃了”。听者必须等很久才能听到动词,因此预测性加工在这种语言环境下会变得更为自然)”可知,因为荷兰语中动词偶尔出现得晚,所以预测性处理对荷兰语来说很自然。故选A项。 根据最后一段“The findings support the need for more diversity in linguistic models...(这些发现支持了语言模型需要更多多样性的观点……)” D Breaking a big goal into smaller parts might seem like a simple trick. In fact, it is a strategy that can be applied widely — to exercising regularly, saving money, or building a new skill. But is there real scientific evidence for its effectiveness? To figure it out, our team carried out a large-scale field experiment with thousands of participants in everyday settings. For our study, we partnered with Crisis Text Line (CTL), a nonprofit providing free text counseling. CTL volunteers are expected to complete 200 hours of service each year, which is quite demanding compared with the national average. We wondered whether setting smaller subgoals would encourage greater participation. In our study, over 9,000 volunteers received e-mails presenting the yearly target in different ways for three months. Some were told simply to aim for 200 hours with no detailed goal breakdown, while others were encouraged to meet either four hours per week or eight hours every two weeks. Then we tracked how much time each group of trained crisis counselors actually spent volunteering during the study. The results showed that people with smaller subgoals volunteered 7 percent to 8 percent more than those given only the big goal. This may sound like a modest increase, but when scaled across CTL’s thousands of volunteers, our intervention translated to thousands of additional counseling hours every month at essentially zero cost to the organization. We also found that the more flexible “eight hours every two weeks” condition led to more lasting benefits, as declines in volunteering were slower than in the stricter “four hours every week” condition. Our study dovetails with the research by behavioral scientists Hal Hershfield and Shlomo Benartzi. Their work shows that people are four times more likely to sign up for a savings program when the required deposit is described as $5 a day rather than $150 a month. Taken together, this recent research suggests that whether goals require taking a single action or “keeping your nose to the grindstone”, subgoals may help. 32. What did the field experiment focus on? A. The cost of volunteering. B. The effect of flexible schedule. C. The method of attaining ambitious goals. D. The effectiveness of subgoals. 33. How was the field experiment conducted? A. By interviewing volunteers about their preferences. B. By instructing participants in breaking down goals. C. By comparing different goal-setting approaches. D. By providing counselors with novel techniques. 34. What does the underlined phrase “dovetails with” in the last paragraph mean? A. Corresponds with. B. Subscribes to. C. Conflicts with. D. Goes to. 35. Which of the following is the best title for the article? A. Why Breaking Goals into Smaller Parts Works B. How Crisis Text Line Increased Volunteer Hours C. The Science of Goal-Setting: A Large-Scale Experiment D. Small Subgoals, Big Impact: Evidence from a Field Study 【答案】32. D 33. C 34. A 35. 根据第一段“But is there real scientific evidence for its effectiveness? To figure it out, our team carried out a large-scale field experiment with thousands of participants in everyday settings.(但这种策略的有效性是否有确凿的科学证据呢?为了找到答案,我们团队在日常场景中对数千名参与者开展了一项大规模实地实验。)”以及第二段“We wondered whether setting smaller subgoals would encourage greater participation.(我们想知道设定更小的子目标是否能激励参与者更多地投入。)” 根据第三段“In our study, over 9,000 volunteers received e-mails presenting the yearly target in different ways for three months. Some were told simply to aim for 200 hours with no detailed goal breakdown, while others were encouraged to meet either four hours per week or eight hours every two weeks.(在我们的研究中,三个月里,9000多名志愿者收到了以不同方式呈现年度目标的邮件。一部分人仅被告知要完成200小时的目标,无详细拆分;另一部分人则被鼓励完成每周4小时或每两周8小时的子目标。)”可知,实验通过对比不同的目标设定方式展开。故选C项。 【34题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段“The results showed that people with smaller subgoals volunteered 7 percent to 8 percent more than those given only the big goal.(结果显示,设定子目标的志愿者比仅知晓总目标的志愿者服务时长多出7%至8%)”以及最后一段“Their work shows that people are four times more likely to sign up for a savings program when the required deposit is described as $5 a day rather than $150 a month.(他们的研究表明,当要求的存款金额被描述为每天5美元而非每月150美元时,人们报名参加储蓄计划的可能性会提高四倍。)” 故选A项。 A beautiful flower garden begins with preparation. It is not just about choosing pretty flowers. ____36____ For beginners this step is especially important. The steps below outline the key factors to consider before getting started. Know your site The first step in creating the perfect flower garden is to familiarize yourself with the area you want to plant. Landscape architect, Mary Ellen Cowan suggests, “Really know your site. ____37____ Be honest with light, moisture (水分) conditions, and the shape of the land.” Know your soil Healthy soil is the foundation of a successful flower garden. ____38____ One reliable way to do this is through a soil test. Erin Benzakein, owner of Floret Flower Farm, explains how to collect soil samples: Dig about one foot deep and take small amounts from different areas. Then send it to a testing lab for analysis. The results will help you decide how to improve your soil. A customer came in one day with three, yes, THREE full-grown Saint Bernard dogs to give them all baths. Fortunately, she is very organized; She brought them in one at a time, and it was in the fall, so it was safe for them to be in the car with the windows cracked for a longer time. She and her delightful pets spent somewhere around five to six hours in the store, cycling one dog at a time and using the same tub (桶) so the other two were open to other customers. Unfortunately, one St. Bernard dog got a little too relaxed during her bath and leaned her roughly 130 lbs weight against the spigot (水龙头), causing the elbow joint (接合处) to bend and block the water flow. The customer apologized repeatedly, but my manager assured her it was OK. The customer switched the dog to another tub, and my manager took apart the affected spigot, removing the damaged elbow joint. With that in hand, he grabbed a few $20and gave them to me with the joint and a request to go to the only nearby store, where the boss has a lovely yellow dog, for a new one. The boss walked by just as I was considering going to ask for help. He greeted me and asked how he could help. I explained I worked at a pet store and that we needed a new part for one of our dog wash tubs. Then I handed him the elbow joint. To my great disappointment, his store didn’t have this kind of elbow joint. What was worse, there were no other stores like this in the neighborhood. My store’s business was going really well, and being unable to buy this part would affect our operations—I was extremely anxious and didn’t know what to do. The boss noticed my confusion and glanced back at the elbow joint. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Later that week, the boss came into our shop with his pet dog. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The boss noticed my confusion and glanced back at the elbow joint. He sat down at a special tool, and placed the elbow joint in it. He then explained the problem could be solved if I gave him a couple of minutes. I expressed my surprise and gratitude. We chatted while he fixed the joint. He mentioned he had a dog of his own, asking how our dog wash worked. Within about ten minutes, the elbow joint was fixed. I headed back to my store. When I told my manager the joint had been fixed for free, he was surprised. Later that week, the boss came into our shop with his pet dog. I turned to my manager, introducing the boss as the gentleman who’d fixed our pipe fitting a few days earlier. My manager thanked the boss sincerely. Before long, he finished bathing his dog and came up to the registers. He reached for his wallet, but my manager said, “You did us a solid, and we do you a solid.” The boss thanked my manager enthusiastically and said he’d definitely bring his dog back next time his dog needed a bath. Truly, you never underestimate the power of the “small kindnesses always circle back”. 词汇激活 行为类: ①表达:express/convey ②修理:fix/repair/mend ③低估:underestimate/underrate 情绪类: ①感谢:gratitude/appreciation ②热情地:enthusiastically/passionately 【点睛】【高分句型1】He then explained the problem could be solved if I gave him a couple of minutes. B. Her skill in planning detailed travel routes. C. Her wisdom in shaping their outlook on life. D. Her patience during their financial struggles. 27. Which word best describes the mother? A. Ambitious. B. Resourceful. C. Adventurous. D. Protective. C Understanding a simple-looking sentence like “I read this article yesterday” actually requires complex computation (计算): a subject (“I”) performed an action (“read”) on an object (“article”) at a specific time (“yesterday”). D Breaking a big goal into smaller parts might seem like a simple trick. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
