On a noticeboard. B. In a storybook. C. On a personal blog. D. In a film review. B As a longtime piano player, 14-year-old Toby Lam has always been fascinated by how music affects people. When he learned that focus time has been decreasing in recent years, Toby wondered: Could music improve concentration? Toby designed and conducted this project as a seventh grader at Long-View Micro School in Austin, Texas. There he set up an online experiment with 65 participants (参与者). Everyone played a game where they had to press a key if certain digits appeared on a screen. A third of the participants played in complete silence; another third heard a popular video game theme song for half of the task; the final third listened to slightly different sounds in each ear for half of the task. Such “binaural” beats give the illusion (错觉) of that someone is listening to a pulsing (有节奏的) beat. Then, Toby compared participants’ reaction times and accuracy. Those who listened to binaural beats performed best, while those who heard the video game theme song performed worst. Toby hopes his results might help students find better ways to focus while studying. These trends were not significant. That is, Toby can’t completely rule out that they appeared from chance. “But this doesn’t mean that my experiment was a failure,” he adds. Toby sees it as a starting point for a larger research into sound and attention. Toby’s research earned him a finalist spot in the 2025 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovations Challenge. “If I were to repeat this study, I would probably give the participants more time to listen to the music,” Toby says. “That would allow for much clearer trends and stronger results.” When asked for advice for research starters, Toby shares two tips. First, use online resources to get started and research can help you decide whether an idea is worth exploring. Second, don’t give up. If you try something and it doesn’t work, failure isn’t a problem. That’s part of the experimental process. 14. Why did Toby conduct the experiment? A. To see if music could help focus. B. To improve his piano performance. C. To finish a project for seventh graders. D. To prove that music helps reduce stress. 15. In Toby’s experiment, participants ________. A. competed in a video game B. watched a video to relax C. pressed keys for certain digits D. counted digits on a screen 16. What was the result of Toby’s experiment? A. Those in silence improved a lot. B Binaural beats listeners did best. C Musicians failed to finish the task. D. Video game music improved reaction. 17. Which of the following can best describe Toby? A. Brave and confident. B. Honest and helpful. C. Creative and determined. D. Humorous and kind. C Recently, a friend announced that her new goal was to stop feeling anxious, and instead to make her life “an adventure.” She asked for my advice. I told her something that Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard recognized as “an adventure which every man has to face if he would not fail in life.” He regarded this as “the most important thing” in life. You might think that anxiety (焦虑) is an absolute trouble, to be avoided whenever possible. But that is not correct. If you remove all anxiety when you’re driving, you may not be sufficiently aware of the dangers of traffic. Even those with serious anxiety get some mental benefits from their anxiety, like awareness of others and greater self-knowledge. How does this all square with an adventure? In 2014 researchers found that flow states (心流状态) in people performing a difficult computer task were highest when subjects felt some anxiety but not too much. A recent study showed that although no one wished to go through these stressful events again, they later tended to report various benefits from their experience of anxiety. They felt free from past troubles and had a clearer understanding of life’s meaning. Clearly, anxiety is not the enemy; it can even be a friend if understood and managed correctly. So this is what I recommended to my friend: “Start by fully realizing and accepting these sources of anxiety. Then rethink them as exciting challenges, not as black clouds. Picture yourself getting along with your partner in a new, energetic way; putting together a whole new plan for bettering your health or rebuilding your work; or taking action for a cause that you care about. This positive response is what will turn the source of your anxiety into an adventure.” My friend asked a follow-up question: “Does it mean I won’t mind my anxiety anymore?” “No,” I said, “you probably still won’t like it.” Anxiety is, in Kierkegaard’s words, the “dizziness (眩晕) of freedom”—the cost of doing the business of being fully alive. You always have to pay that cost, and it is not supposed to feel good. It’s just supposed to be worth it. 18. The author mentions Søren Kierkegaard mainly to ________. A. stress a problem B. draw a comparison C. predict the ending D. highlight an opinion 19. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. How to make anxiety an adventure. B. Why people should accept their anxiety. C. The meaning of anxiety as an adventure. D. Practical ways to get along with partners. 20. What can be inferred about anxiety from the passage? A. Everyone experiences anxiety. B. Anxiety clouds self-awareness. C. Anxiety is a price worth paying. D. Medical treatment is unnecessary. D In 2018, the UK appointed Tracey Crouch as the world’s first “Minister for Loneliness,” following a government report that revealed the growing popularity of isolation (孤独). Despite living in the most connected time in history, millions of us feel extremely alone. As this emotional emptiness widens, something unexpected has happened. Loneliness itself has become a market where companionship, digital or otherwise, can now be bought, streamed, or rented. Replika, one of the most downloaded AI chatbot apps in the world, lets users chat with an artificial companion that “learns” about them over time. Therapy (治疗) apps offer round-the-clock digital support. Even pet companies rent out animals for short-term hugs to those not ready for full-time ownership. There’s clearly a deep emotional hunger out there and the market has found endless ways to feed it, for a price. What’s really driving this hunger for digital affection and paid companionship? At its core, it’s about people feeling disconnected. The traditional places we once turned for community such as neighborhood centers have faded or changed beyond recognition. Meanwhile, a culture that praises independence often makes asking for company feel like weakness. But the most significant shift might be technological. As MIT sociologist Sherry Turkle (2011) once put it, we are now “alone together”, endlessly surrounded by screens and messages, yet longing for something real. It’s also no longer unusual for people to feel emotionally close to influencers they’ve never met, or to movie characters who feel more familiar than their neighbors. But can these digital surrogates truly satisfy us? There’s no denying that the loneliness economy fills a need. Virtual companionship and therapy apps can be a lifeline for certain groups of people. These services also help normalize the seeking of emotional support, something many cultures still look down on. But there’s a darker side. Many of these systems are designed for engagement, not healing (治愈). They keep us clicking, but not connecting. When we turn to digital connections instead of real ones, we could lose the messy, surprising beauty that makes true relationships important. Maybe the loneliness economy isn’t just taking advantage of our disconnection. Perhaps it’s reflecting it to us. It’s a mirror showing how deeply we desire belonging in a world that keeps breaking apart. The loneliness economy may be growing, but if we really want to feel connected again, it’ll take more than intelligent machines. It’ll take us showing up for each other. 21. What can we learn about the “loneliness economy” from the passage? A. It aims to encourage independence. B. It is started by the UK government. C. It is pushed by technological development. D It slows the development of the pet market. 22. What does “surrogates” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Copies. B. Models. C. Limitations. D. Replacements. 23. What can we infer from Paragraph 6? A. Isolation is rooted in culture. B. Virtual friends might be helpful. C. Engagement makes real connections. D. True relationship comes from mess in life. 24. What is the author’s attitude towards the loneliness economy? A. Puzzled. B. Approving. C. Cautious. D. Unconcerned. 第二部分(共57分) 三、完成句子(共7小题;每小题1分,共7分) 根据句意,用括号内所给单词的适当形式填空,请将正确形式完整地写在答题卡相应题号后的横线上。 25. Teaching children with special needs requires _____(patient) and understanding. (所给词的适当形式填空) 26. And it doesn’t take much, new data show. Previous studies had tested the benefits of 20 to 30 minutes of exercise on sports equipment. But exercise expert Drollette, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, wanted to develop a program that would take just a few minutes. What his team came up with was a nine-minute high-intensity interval program. High intensity refers to a target heart rate. Interval refers to the breaks between sets of exercise. Kids might exercise for 30 seconds, rest for the next half minute, then do another 30-second set. High knees, star jumps, and kicks would all fit. Drollette and his team got 25 students, who visited his lab three times. On each visit, the kids completed nine minutes of activity: high-intensity interval exercises, stationary biking and a short educational video. Shortly after each activity, the kids took a test: five fish in a line appeared on screen, and they noted the center fish’s direction. The researchers recorded and compared their brain responses. After high-intensity exercise, students showed a change in one brain response. “We call it the uh-oh mechanism (机制),” Drollette says. It happens any time you think, “uh-oh, I made a mistake.” This response allows us to recognize a mistake so we can correct it in the future. High-intensity exercise reduced the size of that response. Kids still realized when they’d made a mistake, but their brains didn’t have to work as hard to pick up on that. The change suggests the exercise had made their brains more effective. The other two activities didn’t show that benefit. Drollette says, “Being active can help with a lot of things.” That includes both mental and physical health. So, he recommends, “Find opportunities to stand up and get moving.” 45. What had previous studies tested? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 46. What do kids do in a nine-minute high-intensity interval program? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 47. B. Binaural beats listeners did best. C. Musicians failed to finish the task. D. Video game music improved reaction. 17. Which of the following can best describe Toby? A. Brave and confident. B. Honest and helpful. C. Creative and determined. D. Humorous and kind. 【答案】14. A 15. C 16. B 17. In 2014, researchers found that flow states (心流状态) in people performing a difficult computer task were highest when subjects felt some anxiety but not too much. 【答案】18. D 19. A 20. 根据第一段“I told her something that Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard recognized as “an adventure which every man has to face if he would not fail in life.” He regarded this as “the most important thing” in life.(我告诉她丹麦哲学家索伦·克尔凯郭尔所认同的观点:“这是一场每个人若想不虚度此生就必须面对的冒险。” 克尔凯郭尔将此视为人生中 “最重要的事”)”可知,作者提及索伦·克尔凯郭尔主要是为了突出一种观点,即焦虑在生活中有其重要性。故选D项。 【19题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段“So this is what I recommended to my friend: “Start by fully realizing and accepting these sources of anxiety. Then rethink them as exciting challenges, not as black clouds. Picture yourself getting along with your partner in a new, energetic way; putting together a whole new plan for bettering your health or rebuilding your work; or taking action for a cause that you care about. This positive response is what will turn the source of your anxiety into an adventure.(所以这就是我给朋友的建议:“首先要充分认识并接受这些焦虑的根源。然后将它们重新看作是令人兴奋的挑战,而非笼罩心头的乌云。想象自己以一种全新的、充满活力的方式与伴侣相处;为改善健康状况或重建工作制定一个全新的计划;或者为自己关心的事业采取行动。这种积极的应对方式会将你焦虑的根源转化为一场冒险”)”可知,第四段主要阐述了如何将焦虑转化为冒险。故选A项。 【20题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Anxiety is, in Kierkegaard’s words, the “dizziness (眩晕) of freedom”—the cost of doing the business of being fully alive. You always have to pay that cost, and it is not supposed to feel good. It’s just supposed to be worth it.(用克尔凯郭尔的话来说,焦虑是 “自由的眩晕”——这是充实地活着所要付出的代价。你总是不得不付出这个代价,而且它本就不会让人感觉好受。但它理应是值得的。)”可知,焦虑是为充分体验生活所付出的值得的代价。故选C项。 D In 2018, the UK appointed Tracey Crouch as the world’s first “Minister for Loneliness,” following a government report that revealed the growing popularity of isolation (孤独). D. It slows the development of the pet market. 22. What does “surrogates” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Copies. B. Models. C. Limitations. D. Replacements. 23. What can we infer from Paragraph 6? A. Isolation is rooted in culture. B. Virtual friends might be helpful. C. Engagement makes real connections. D. True relationship comes from mess in life. 24. What is the author’s attitude towards the loneliness economy? A. Puzzled. B. Approving. C. Cautious. D. Unconcerned. 【答案】21. C 22. D 23. B 24. Meanwhile, a culture that praises independence often makes asking for company feel like weakness. But the most significant shift might be technological.(究竟是什么催生了人们对这种数字化情感慰藉和付费陪伴的渴求?究其本质,是人们正感到彼此间的联结日益疏离。我们曾赖以构建社群归属感的传统场所,比如社区活动中心,早已日渐式微,或变得面目全非。与此同时,推崇独立的社会文化,往往让主动寻求陪伴的行为显得像是一种软弱。而这其中,最重大的转变或许来自科技的发展。)”可知,孤独经济的发展受到了科技发展的推动。故选C项。 【22题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段“It’s also no longer unusual for people to feel emotionally close to influencers they’ve never met, or to movie characters who feel more familiar than their neighbors.(人们对素未谋面的网红、甚至比邻居还熟悉的电影角色产生情感共鸣,这也不再稀奇。)” 可知,人们会将这些虚拟的对象当作情感寄托,替代现实中的陪伴者,因此surrogates的意思是“替代品”。故选D项。 【23题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段“Virtual companionship and therapy apps can be a lifeline for certain groups of people. What does the change brought by high-intensity exercise suggest? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 48. What do you think of “movement breaks”? Why? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】45. Previous studies had tested the benefits of 20 to 30 minutes of exercise on sports equipment. 46. Kids exercise for 30 seconds, rest for the next half minute, then do another 30-second set. High knees, star jumps, and kicks would all fit. 47. The change suggests the exercise had made their brains more effective. 48. I think movement breaks are very useful. Because they can improve students’ focus in school. My suggestion is a silk scarf. My reasons are as follows. First of all, silk is a symbol of Chinese culture with a long history. It represents elegance and tradition. Additionally, a silk scarf is very practical. It’s light, beautiful, and can be worn in different seasons or for various occasions, adding a touch of Chinese style. Choosing a scarf with classic patterns like peonies or landscapes would be perfect. At last, its price is affordable so that you may choose from a variety of products. I believe your mom will appreciate this thoughtful and elegant gift. Happy birthday to her in advance! Yours, Li Hua 【解析】 【导语】本篇书面表达属于应用文。要求考生以李华身份给英国好友Jim回复邮件,给他推荐一份中国特色的生日礼物,送给他的妈妈作为生日礼物。 【详解】1.词汇积累 寻找:look for → seek (for) 长久的,悠久的:long → long-standing 选择:choose → select 贴心的:thoughtful → considerate 2.句式拓展 合并句子 原句:First of all, silk is a symbol of Chinese culture with a long history.
