For years, Dr. Li Chen, a brilliant immunologist, had defined success by the data on his charts: declining viral loads and rising T-cell counts. His clinical trials were efficient, his papers highly quoted. Yet, a conversation with an elderly patient, Mr. Duncan, quietly shook his certainty.
Mr. Duncan, despite showing excellent numerical (数值的) recovery, remained anxious and weak. “The numbers say I’m winning, Doctor,” he said. His voice thin, “but why do I still feel like I’m losing?” This question lingered with Li. He reviewed the data, and everything was technically perfect. The solution, he realized, wasn’t in his lab reports, but in the human element he’d avoided.
He decided to modify his trial’s protocol Alongside the standard blood tests, he introduced simple, weekly check-ins. These weren’t just about symptoms; Li asked about patients’ sleep, their appetite for hobbies, their sense of hope. Nurses recorded these subjective reports. Initially, his team was skeptical, seeing it as unscientific sentiment (情感).
But patterns emerged. Patients like Mr. Duncan, whose “well-being scores” were low, often faced setbacks later, even with good lab results. Li began cross-referencing the emotional data with clinical outcomes. He found that a patient’s perceived strength was a surprisingly reliable predictor of long-term recovery.
The real change came in Li’s practice. He still relied on data, but now, he looked at the patient first. He learned to ask, “How are you feeling?” with genuine interest, not just as a routine. Mr. Duncan’s later recovery was stronger, and he credited the feeling of being “seen” as much as the medicine.
Li later wrote, “Science gives us the ‘how’, but humanity must guide the ‘why’. True healing requires measuring not just the disease, but the spirit fighting it.” His once dry research papers now began with patient stories, reminding the scientific community that behind every data point is a human life.
4. What was Dr. Li Chen’s initial focus at the beginning of the story?
A. His patients’ emotional well-being and life quality.
B. The publication of highly influential academic papers.
C. The measurable biological data from his patients.
D. The communication skills between doctors and patients.
5. What new practice did Dr. Li Chen introduce to his clinical trial?
A. More frequent and advanced procedures for conducting blood tests.
B. Regular recording of patients’ personal feelings and daily conditions.
C. The use of experimental new medicines to speed up the recovery process.
D. Organized sessions of direct psychological therapy for all trial participants.
6. What does the underlined word “dry” in the last paragraph most probably mean?
A. dull B. complex C. respected D. useless
7. What does Mr. Duncan’s case primarily show in the story?
A. Advanced medical technology is the only key to curing diseases.
B. A doctor’s reputation is built merely on successful clinical trials.
C. Personal feelings can be a vital sign in the healing process.
D. Elderly patients often struggle to understand their own medical data.
C 5. B 6. A 7. C

根据第一段“For years, Dr. Li Chen, a brilliant immunologist, had defined success by the data on his charts: declining viral loads and rising T-cell counts.(多年来,杰出的免疫学家李晨博士一直用图表上的数据来定义成功:病毒载量下降,T细胞数量上升。)”
根据第三段“He decided to modify his trial’s protocol (试验方案). Alongside the standard blood tests, he introduced simple, weekly check-ins. These weren’t just about symptoms; Li asked about patients’ sleep, their appetite for hobbies, their sense of hope. Nurses recorded these subjective reports. (他决定修改试验方案。除了标准的血液检测外,他还引入了简单的每周检查。这些不仅仅是关于症状的;李还会询问患者的睡眠、对爱好的兴致以及希望感。护士们记录下这些主观反馈。)”可知,李晨博士在临床试验中引入的新做法是定期记录患者个人感受和日常状况。故选B项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段“For years, Dr. Li Chen, a brilliant immunologist, had defined success by the data on his charts: declining viral loads and rising T-cell counts.(多年来,杰出的免疫学家李晨博士一直通过图表上的数据来定义成功:病毒载量下降和T细胞计数上升)”以及最后一段“Li later wrote, “Science gives us the ‘how’, but humanity must guide the ‘why’. True healing requires measuring not just the disease, but the spirit fighting it.” His once dry research papers now began with patient stories, reminding the scientific community that behind every data point is a human life. (李后来写道:“科学给了我们“如何”,但人性必须指导“为什么”。真正的治愈不仅需要衡量疾病,还需要衡量与疾病作斗争的精神。”他曾经的dry研究论文现在以患者的故事开篇,提醒科学界,每个数据点背后都是一个人的生命)”可知,李晨博士之前的研究论文只关注数据,缺乏对人性、情感的关注,因此之前的研究论文是枯燥的,dry在此处指“枯燥的”,与dull含义相近。故选A项。
Duncan, despite showing excellent numerical (数值的) recovery, remained anxious and weak. “The numbers say I’m winning, Doctor,” he said. his voice thin, “but why do I still feel like I’m losing?”(尽管邓肯先生表现出了出色的数值恢复,但他仍然感到焦虑和虚弱。“数字显示我赢了,医生,”他说。他的声音很细,“但为什么我仍然觉得我输了?”)”以及第四段“Patients like Mr. Duncan, whose “well-being scores” were low, often faced setbacks later, even with good lab results. Li began cross-referencing the emotional data with clinical outcomes. He found that a patient’s perceived strength was a surprisingly reliable predictor of long-term recovery.

A recent research has revealed a striking shift in British children’s reading habits: fewer are reading for pleasure, while more are turning to audiobooks This has led to calls for audiobooks to be included in England’s new school curriculum (课程).
A survey conducted by the National Literacy Trust (NLT) among 37,000 UK children and young people aged 8 to 18 found that their enjoyment of audio content and podcasts (播客) has been on the rise. In 2024, over 40% said they enjoyed listening in their free time, up from 39.4% in 2023. What’s more, this is the first time that listening has become more popular than reading since the NLT started the survey in 2020. At the same time, only a little over one-third of kids enjoy reading for fun — its level has dropped to a “crisis” point.
Jonathan Douglas, the NLT’s CEO, said: “In recent years, we’ve seen a steady rise in children’s enjoyment of listening to audio and found many good things it can bring from waking a love of reading and helping literacy development to deepening learning and boosting wellbeing. So by working together to use children’s and young people’s enthusiasm for audio in the curriculum, we can play an important role in raising a generation of readers and turning a page on the nation’s reading-for-pleasure crisis.”
John Mullan, professor of English at University College London, however, warned that audiobooks were no replacement for reading. “I’m not against audiobooks,” he said. “I listen to them myself, and my children certainly listen to them.” But it’s very different from a parent reading to you. That interaction is really valuable. An audiobook doesn’t respond; no matter how well it’s read, there’s no talk or emotional link.
Mullan pointed out the difference — reading is active and lively, but listening is passive. Even so, audiobooks can lead kids to love books, which are better than not having any interest in a work of fiction at all. But they aren’t a replacement for traditional reading.
8. What can we learn from the survey conducted by the NLT?
A Over 40% of the surveyed enjoyed listening to audio in 2023.
B. Reading became more popular than listening for the first time in 2024.
C. Less than one-third of the surveyed took pleasure in reading for fun now.
D. Children’s interest in audio content has been increasing steadily recently.
9. Why does the NLT advocate including audiobooks in the school curriculum?
A. They are favored by most children. B. They help solve the nation’s study crisis.
C. They bring a wide range of benefits. D. They offer some educational content.
10. What does John Mullan think of audiobooks?
A. They can replace traditional reading. B. They have certain positive effects.
C. They can build emotional connection. D. They contribute to active interaction.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Potential benefits and limitations of audiobooks for British kids.
B. A survey about British children’s reading and listening habits.
C. Different views on adding audiobooks to England’s school curriculum.
D. Reasons behind British children’s preference for audiobooks over reading.
D 9. C 10. B 11. C

Even so, audiobooks can lead kids to love books, which are better than not having any interest in a work of fiction at all. But they aren’t a replacement for traditional reading.(马伦指出了二者的区别——阅读是主动且鲜活的,而收听是被动的。
故选A。

The burning of coal may be falling out of favor in generating heat and electricity because of its pollution, but that doesn’t mean it no longer has valuable uses. The team of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is using coal for a new economy.
While reading about challenges of ending the use of coal in power generation, the project leader Fratalochi was struck by a novel possible use for coal. “Why not use coal for seawater desalination (脱盐)?” Fratalochi recalls. Capable of taking in sunlight, the coal serves the purpose, which the team is hunting for.
Fratalochi and his team began to explore the use of a material known as carbonized compressed powder (碳化压缩粉末), also CCP, created by breaking coal into powder, and then pressing that powder back into a solid that has more tiny holes. The team mixed CCP with natural cotton fibers (棉纤维), producing a block which was then placed within a seawater-containing container, with its bottom touching water surface. While sunlight heated the black surface of the block, the inside fibers helped water flow in and through the block from the bottom. When that liquid water reached the hot surface, it turned into steam which rose and condensed (冷凝) on the inside of a specially shaped cover. That condensation then flowed down the cover and was collected as fresh, drinkable water. The seawater’s salt content remained behind within the CCP. A simple wash was enough to remove most of it to reuse the material for many times.
“CCP is abundant in nature and reasonable to use, besides being lightweight and highly changeable,” says team member Marcella Bonifazi. The device’s desalination rate per unit of raw material is two to three times higher than that of any other solar desalination system, but it produces fresh water at around one-third the expense of current technologies. KAUST has found a partner company to promote the technology. The material will see its first use in Brazil.
12. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To emphasize the serious pollution caused by burning coal.
B. To compare the traditional and new uses of coal.
C. To introduce the traditional uses of coal in power generation.
D. To lead in the topic of coal’s new valuable application.
13. What does Paragraph 3 focus on about the use of the carbonized compressed powder?
A. Its necessary materials. B. Its working principle.
C. Its functional advantages. D. Its experimenting conditions.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. It is scarce in natural resources and expensive to produce.
B. Its desalination cost is three times that of current technologies.
C. It has a high desalination rate at low cost of fresh water.
D. It has the feature of being lightweight and in low flexibility.
15. What will the passage most probably talk about next?
A. The new uses of coal in environmental protection.
B. The detailed production process of CCP.
C. The market demand for seawater desalination technology.
D. The potential application of the desalination technology.
D 13. B 14. C 15. D

Many people with chronic (慢性的) pain are afraid to do exercise, worrying it may make their pain worse, yet scientific evidence confirms that proper exercise is a powerful tool for pain management rather than a source of harm. ____16____
Exercise relieves pain mainly in two key ways. First, moderate exercise makes your body produce endorphins, which serve as natural painkillers that block pain signals and cause relaxation. For example, a 30-minute walk every day can increase endorphins, helping reduce the back pain caused by sitting for too long. ____17____ That takes pressure off the painful parts of your body. Take knee pain as an example: simple leg lifts can strengthen the muscles around the knees, making them better support the knee joints and reduce discomfort.
Choosing the right exercises is very important. ____18____ Walking, swimming, yoga and Tai Chi are good options. These activities are gentle on your joints and can work your whole body at the same time. If you haven’t exercised for a long time, start with just 5 to 10 minutes each day, and slowly increase the time as you get stronger. Stop exercising right away if your pain suddenly gets worse. ____19____ Short daily exercise sessions of 20 to 30 minutes work better than long but infrequent workouts. Regular movement keeps your blood flowing well and helps your body keep its natural ability to control pain.
____20____ These professionals can make a safe and personalized exercise plan for you. For example, they may suggest gentle stretches for a sore back or water aerobics for knee pain.
In short, when done in the right way, exercise is not just helpful but also necessary for managing chronic pain in the long run. It helps you move more freely, get rid of constant discomfort, and finally improve your quality of life.
A. Consistency also matters.
B. Exercise is a safe and effective way to manage pain.
C. It can ease discomfort and enhance physical function.
D. Intense workouts may worsen pain so low-to-moderate activities are ideal.
E. It is wise to consult a doctor or physical therapist before starting any exercise.
F. Ask a doctor or physical therapist for advice when you suffer from chronic pain.
G. Additionally, gentle targeted exercises strengthen muscles and improve joint flexibility.
C 17. G 18. D 19. A 20. E

Campus Food Festival: Taste vs. Health
Last Saturday, our school held a fun food festival, which offered nice food and aroused lively discussions among teachers and students.
The festival featured a friendly contest between “Taste First” and “Health First” teams. The former made crispy fried dumplings and sweet pastries, while the latter prepared fresh vegetable salads and whole-grain bread. After tasting, a heated debate broke out: some said taste is food’s soul creating happy memories, while others insisted health comes first for long-term well-being.
Most agreed great food balances both. As a student put it, “Good food delights taste buds and nourishes bodies.” The festival satisfied appetites and made us reflect on what truly makes a meal great.

Once a year, Ursula Bannister, who lives in Tacoma, climbs to High Rock Lookout, a popular viewpoint near Ashford, Washington, which offers sweeping views of the surrounding forests and mountains.
She usually hikes with someone along the 5.2 km trail (小径). Last August, however, Ursula, then 79 years old, decided to go on her own — her usual hiking partner had to cancel at the last minute due to a cold. The trail to the Lookout is so steep and winding that it’s considered a hard hike even for young people, but Ursula never minds the effort — she has been making this trip for over a decade, and every step feels like a reunion with an old friend.
She arrived at the trail at around 11 a.m. and made her way up to the Lookout, where she was rewarded with a breathtaking view. Mount Rainier rose in the distance, its snow-capped peak glistening in the sunlight. Ursula unpacked a picnic of sandwiches and fruit, and then spent an hour enjoying the fresh mountain air and taking photos.
As the afternoon sun began to drop toward the horizon, Ursula started the journey back down. Unfortunately, her left foot suddenly got caught in a deep, hidden hole in the ground. Before she could steady herself, she lost her balance and fell forward heavily onto the rocky trail. By the time she struggled to sit up, a sharp pain shot up her leg and her foot pointed in the wrong direction. She knew right away her leg had got broken. Hands trembling, she called 911, only to be told that a search and rescue team would arrive in five hours. The operator explained that the vehicle could only reach the parking lot at the bottom of the trail and it would take the rescue team about 3 hours to arrive where she was. Feeling discouraged and overwhelmed by the unbearable pain, she cried out for help at the top of her lungs. But nobody answered. Ursula pulled her thin jacket tight, her fear growing with every minute passing.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just as she felt hopeless, two young hikers Troy May and Layton Allen approached her. After learning what had happened, Troy gently checked her leg and told her to keep still to avoid worsening the injury, while Layton took off his backpack and used his jacket to keep her warm. Exchanging a few words, they made an offer: they could carry Ursula to the bottom of the trail. Ursula accepted with gratitude, called 911 again and told them their plan. Kneeling down and carrying the old woman on his back, Troy started hiking down the trail, carefully avoiding rocky areas to reduce her pain. Layton supported beside them, chatting with Ursula to draw her attention away from the pain.
They took turns to carry Ursula on the way downward. After what seemed ages, they finally reached the parking lot. Seeing the vehicle there, they let out a sigh of relief. Ursula thanked them repeatedly, her eyes filled with gratitude. The rescue team quickly carried Ursula into the ambulance and praised Troy and Layton for their timely help, saying it had greatly shortened the rescue process. Before being taken away, Ursula asked for their contact information, determined to express her thanks properly. The two young men waved and wished her a speedy recovery, knowing that helping others in need was the most meaningful part of their hike.

A. Over 40% of the surveyed enjoyed listening to audio in 2023.
B. Reading became more popular than listening for the first time in 2024.
C. Less than one-third of the surveyed took pleasure in reading for fun now.
D. Children’s interest in audio content has been increasing steadily recently.
9. Why does the NLT advocate including audiobooks in the school curriculum?
A They are favored by most children.

“CCP is abundant in nature and reasonable to use besides being lightweight and highly changeable,” says team member Marcella Bonifazi.
B Its desalination cost is three times that of current technologies.

D. Intense workouts may worsen pain, so low-to-moderate activities are ideal.
E. It is wise to consult a doctor or physical therapist before starting any exercise.
F. Ask a doctor or physical therapist for advice when you suffer from chronic pain.
G. Additionally, gentle targeted exercises strengthen muscles and improve joint flexibility.
