Here are some science-based strategies: 1. Use All Your Senses When you learn something new, try to use more than one sense. For example, read aloud (hearing), write notes (touch and sight), and even imagine a smell or taste related to the information. This is called multi-sensory learning, and it helps your brain create stronger memory links. 2. Space Out Your Practice Instead of studying for hours at a time, it’s better to study for shorter periods over several days. This method, called spaced repetition, helps move information from short-term to long-term memory. You can use flash cards to review words or facts every few days. 3. Teach Someone Else When you explain something to others, you have to organize the information clearly. This helps you summarize and understand it better. Teaching is a powerful way to strengthen your memory. 4. Stay Calm and Positive Stress and anxiety can harm your memory. Try to stay relaxed before a test. Take deep breaths, and remind yourself that you have prepared well. A positive attitude will decide how well you remember. 5. Connect New Information to Old If you learn something new, try to connect it to something you already know. For example, if you learn a new word, think of a similar word or a situation where you might use it. This helps your brain store the new information in a meaningful context. ( )1. What is “multi-sensory learning”? A. Learning only by listening. B. Using only sight to learn. C. Using more than one sense to learn. D. Learning without using senses. ( )2. Why is “spaced repetition” useful? A. Because it is easier than other methods. B. Because it saves time. C. Because it helps information enter long-term memory. D. Because it doesn’t need any review. So how can we improve our memory? Many people think that repeating things is the best way to remember them. This of course helps short-term memory (remembering a telephone number for a few seconds, for example), but psychologists (心理学家) doubt whether it can help you to remember things for very long. The British psychologist Ec Stanford seemed to prove this point when he tested himself on five prayers (祈祷文) that he had read aloud every morning for over 25 years. He found that he could remember no more than three words of some of them! More helpful, especially for remembering numbers, is grouping the information. The following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919931848. But look at them in chunks, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1993 1848. According to experts, there are many ways of training your memory. One method, which may be useful in learning foreign languages, is to create a picture, in your mind connected to a word you want to remember. Another method is to invent a story that includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this skill; when tested afterwards, on average, they were able to recall 90% of them! For those studying large number of information, psychologists suggest that the best way to remember the information is to ask yourself lots of questions as you go along. So, for example, if you were reading about a particular disease (疾病), you would ask yourself questions like: “Do people get it from water?”, “What parts of the body does it influence?” and so on. This is said to be far more effective than time spent “passively” reading and re-reading notes. 1. Which of the following is true about repeating things according to the passage? A. It helps to remember things for long. B. It makes remembering things interesting. C. It helps short-term memory for sure. D. It makes remembering prayers effortlessly 2. The word “chunks” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________”. A. groups B. turns C. details D. lines 3. How many ways of remembering things are mentioned in the passage? A. 6. B. 5. C. 4. D. 3. 4. What can we infer from the passage? A. Creating a picture is useful in learning math. B. Inventing a prayer trains our memory quickly. C. Remembering long numbers is easy for people. D. Asking yourself questions helps improve your memory. 5. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To share some ways of improving memory. B. To recognize some memory problems. C. Did those special moments really happen or did we just make them up? These questions may sound strange, but according to research, about four out of ten of us invent our first childhood memories. Rather than having experienced something, we could have made up a fake (假的) memory from videos or photos we saw. We could have been influenced by a story told to us and then we could have used someone else's memory as our own. What it means is that memories of our younger years, especially before the age of two, may be untrue. So don't always believe them. But why don't we have clear memories from that age? According to Catherine Loveday, an expert at the University of Westminster, the memories that newborn babies have are not long - lasting. This is possibly because of the fast creation of brain cells (细胞) in our early years. So why do we create fake memories? Some experts believe that there is a clear wish for a sense of self and having a story of our existence (存在). Creating memories can give us a more complete picture of our early lives. As we get older, we want to have a complete picture of our whole lives. So, the next time someone says they have a clear memory from when they were one, or even before, just remember that while it could be true, there's a chance that they just invented it at some point in their lives. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。 ( ) 1. A. be tired of it B. question it C. be happy with it D. completely believe it ( ) 5. What would be the best title of the passage? A. Why do we lose our memories? B. Can we believe in other people? C.
