My family had a long-running cycle of growing up poor. Both my mom and dad came from large families with little more than the clothes on their backs. Their parents had also grown up with very little.
When I was five, I showed an interest in machinery. By Grade 3, I was learning to program using the BASIC language. Then, one day in high school, my computer science teacher suggested I attend a computer camp. He gave me a brochure (小册子) and I excitedly took it home. That excitement quickly disappeared as my mom saw the price of the camp: several hundred dollars. That evening, I went into my room and cried my eyes out.
But a few weeks later, I got a phone call. It was the head of the computer camp telling me I was admitted to the camp. I could hardly believe my ears. At that camp, I met many like-minded kids and learned how to build websites. It lit a fire in me.
Ten years later, I received another call from the camp director. “I’ve found something I think you’ll want to see,” he said, suggesting we meet. When we did, he pulled out a long handwritten letter my mom had sent when I was 15. She wrote that I was a smart kid. She talked a lot about my early love for machinery and computers. She ended by saying she couldn’t afford the cost of the computer camp and hoped in her heart that they would still accept me. I broke down crying at once.
Over the years, I continued to learn as much as I could. In 2014, I finally landed a job where I could use all my skills. Now, I’m proud to say that I’ve broken my family’s cycle of living poorly.
And all I want to do now is to sit down with my mom and thank her for everything she has done for me. Without her, I would never have the bright life I have today.

“Reduce, reuse, recycle,” these are the three Rs that environmental activists have stressed. But how can we realize them? Recently, this idea came to life in China in a clever way in a famous scenic spot (风景区) in Dunhuang, Northwest China’s Gansu Province.
With the arrival of the tourist season, the scenic spot has been crowded with visitors, around 20,000 a day since July. With so many people, the challenge of managing waste has become more serious, putting cleaners under pressure. So, the scenic spot came up with a fun way to help: “Trash Hunt for Gifts.” Here’s how it works: Visitors are given trash bags and encouraged to pick up litter around the site (地点). In return, they get small gifts showing Dunhuang’s rich culture.
Isn’t this another good form of the three Rs spirit? I still remember going to some scenic spots, especially historical sites, where people gather in a small area. At these places, littering is something we always have to try hard to deal with. Not only does it influence the cleanliness of a site, but it is also likely to harm the natural environment. So, when I saw how the “Trash Hunt for Gifts” program was carried out, it was clear this way was more than just a trick to attract attention. It was truly an effort to encourage a culture of responsibility and care. The activity does more than just cleaning up the area. It turns every visitor into an environmental guard (警卫), actively taking part in protecting the beauty of the site.
________ Other places in China are also doing similar things. It’s great to see that tourists are not just enjoying the sights, but also helping to protect them. Turning tourists into environmental guards is a new and exciting way to keep our scenic spots clean and beautiful for everyone to enjoy. It’s a reminder that while we enjoy the beauty around us, we also have the power to protect it.
33.How do visitors take part in “Trash Hunt for Gifts”?
A.By buying trash bags. B.By picking up trash.
C.By giving out gifts. D.By spreading Dunhuang culture.
34.From the passage, we can know that “Trash Hunt for Gifts” program ________.
A.was started by visitors in Dunhuang
B.was aimed at drawing public attention
C.forced visitors to clean up the spots
D.helped to reduce the pressure on cleaners
35.Which of the following can be put in ________?
A.The idea is spreading. B.People love the gifts.
C.Dunhuang becomes more attractive. D.Visitors become more active.
36.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To explain what the three Rs are.
B.To show how to face challenges during the trip.
C.To introduce a new way of travelling.
D.To encourage people to be guardians of nature.

①In our fast-changing world, social customs are not staying the same. What people are supposed to do in different situations has been evolving (演变). This is especially clear in greetings, which are the first step in social communication.
②Traditionally, customs were quite strict. In many Western cultures like the United States, people used to be supposed to shake hands in formal meetings. For friends, a simple “hello” was often enough. In China, the rules were different. People, especially the younger ones, were supposed to show clear respect to the elders. They would often nod slightly or bow their heads a little. Physical touch was less common than in the West.
③However, things are changing quickly. Nowadays, the handshake is still common in the West for business, but among friends, hugs are often acceptable. In modern China, while respectful nods are still polite, handshakes have become very common in cities and workplaces. Young people usually use casual “Hi” or “Hello” in daily life.
④The most noticeable change among young people is the rise of the “fist bump (碰拳).” It is now seen as a cool, quick, and friendly greeting among teenagers worldwide. It is less formal than a handshake and helps people feel connected quickly. ______
⑤Why are these changes happening? People’s lives are busier and faster, so greetings have become quicker. The old strict rules sometimes feel too slow or formal for today’s lifestyle. The key point now is not just following one strict rule, but showing respect makes everyone feel comfortable.
⑥It is important to understand the changes in today’s modern, connected world. Therefore, let’s keep an open mind and never stop learning.
37.What were younger people in China traditionally supposed to do when greeting the elders?
A.Shake hands. B.Give a big hug. C.Nod or bow. D.Use a fist bump.
38.Which sentence can be put in the ________?
A.Another new custom is the “elbow bump,” which has become popular during global health problems.
B.Some people still think the old ways of greeting are the best and show more respect to others.
C.Some health experts suggest we should all stop using handshakes in the future to prevent illness.
D.Bowing is still common in many Japanese offices, where it is seen as an important business manner.
39.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The History of Handshakes
B.Changes in Greeting Customs
C.The Popularity of Greetings
D.Different Cultures, Different Greetings
40.What’s the best structure of this passage?
A.①②/③④/⑤/⑥B.①/②③/④⑤/⑥ C.①②③/④/⑤/⑥ D.①/②/③④⑤/⑥

七、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Do you have a goal you want to achieve before your next birthday? Or by the end of the next five years, perhaps? We often hear about the importance of setting goals. We may think of these goals as the key to our happiness—achieve them and everything will be perfect. But have you ever reached a goal and instead of feeling happy, you've thought, “Is that it?” Or, “Now what?”
That feeling has a name. It’s called “arrival fallacy”—the illusion (错误的观念) that reaching our goals will bring us lasting happiness.
Whether it’s a new job, owning your dream home or anything else—there might be some initial (最初的) joy, but if you’re experiencing arrival fallacy, that may be followed by emptiness (空虚) and under stress to achieve something new.
So why does this happen? Surely achieving our goals is enough to make us happy? Not always. According to experts, we might be overestimating (高估) the happiness that such achievements will bring
And social scientist Adam Dorr says we often make the mistake of imagining our goal as a fixed object, when really it’s just part of life. But Ben Shahar adds that arrival fallacy doesn’t mean we shouldn’t set goals—in fact, we need them to help give our lives focus.
As well as large things, our goals should include many small things, like helping out more around the house or spending more time with family—small but important goals that don’t just “end”. If we really want to beat arrival fallacy, we also have to work out what makes us happy. And in surveys, spending quality time with people we care about is often number one for happiness.
Even if we do have clear career goals, experts remind us to think about enjoying the journey too—and not just the destination (目的地).
66.What is “arrival fallacy”?
67.How might someone feel after reaching a goal if they experience “arrival fallacy”?
68.Why do we have the feeling “arrival fallacy”?
69.What does social scientist Adam Dorr suggest about the nature of goals?

70.What will you do to beat “arrival fallacy”? (请自拟一句话作答)
【答案】66.(It is) the illusion that reaching our goals will bring us lasting happiness. 67.(He/She might feel) empty and stressed (to achieve something new). 68.We might be overestimating the happiness that such achievements will bring. 69.It’s just part of life. 70.We can set small but important goals that don’t just “end”./We should enjoy the journey too—and not just the destination. (Any reasonable answer can be accepted))
【导语】本文主要向我们介绍了“arrival fallacy”,这是一种错误的观念,认为达到目标就会给我们带来持久幸福的错觉。文章介绍了为什么有这种感觉以及如何解决。
66.根据“the illusion (错误的观念) that reaching our goals will bring us lasting happiness.”可知,这是一个错误观念,以为达到目标就能给我们带来持久的幸福。故填(It is) the illusion that reaching our goals will bring us lasting happiness.
67.根据“Whether it’s a new job, owning your dream home or anything else—there might be some initial (最初的) joy, but if you’re experiencing arrival fallacy, that may be followed by emptiness (空虚) and under stress to achieve something new.”可知,如果人们经历了这种错误的观念,他们在达到目标后会感觉空虚和压力,以实现新的东西。故填(He/She might feel) empty and stressed (to achieve something new).
68.根据“According to experts, we might be overestimating (高估) the happiness that such achievements will bring”可知,是因为我们可能高估了这些成就将带来的快乐。故填We might be overestimating the happiness that such achievements will bring.
69.根据“And social scientist Adam Dorr says we often make the mistake of imagining our goal as a fixed object, when really it’s just part of life.”可知,他指出目标的本质只是生活的一部分。故填It’s just part of life.

【答案】例文
Nowadays, with the popularity of Chinese style, many people show great interest in traditional Chinese culture. Among all these wonderful parts of our culture, Chinese calligraphy is my favorite.
Calligraphy is amazing because it uses simple things like a brush, ink, paper, and an inkstone. You can write in different ways. Some styles look wild and free, while others are neat and formal. Every line you draw shows your feelings. When I watch calligraphers write, I feel like they’re dancing with the brush!
I started learning calligraphy in Grade 6. At first, it was so hard! I couldn’t hold the brush right, and my characters looked messy. My teacher said, “Don’t worry. Just practice slowly and watch how the characters are shaped.” Day by day, I found joy in writing. It was like a quiet game where I learned to make lines and shapes look balanced.
Calligraphy isn’t just a hobby for me. It’s like a key to understanding China’s long history. When I copy old poems, I feel like I’m talking to people from the past. Last month, I taught my American friend Lily to write “peace.” She was so excited and said, “This is like drawing stories!” That made me proud to share our culture.
In short, calligraphy is more than ink on paper. It’s a special gift from our ancestors. I hope more people will try it and help this amazing art live on forever!
