B I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world. Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism. I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep. We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds. Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road. Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other’s cultures. 4.How did the writer first respond to Paul’s travel plan? A.Annoyed B.Surprised. C.Confused. D.Pleased 5.What can we learn about Paul Salopek from Paragraph 2? A.He was a western journalist. B.He came to China several times. C.He had a knowledge of China. D.He was Joseph Rock’s acquaintance. 6.What does Paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul? A.They honored the ancestors. B.They set off in high spirits. C.They satisfied the locals’ curiosity. D.They built bonds with people. 7.What is the main purpose of the writer’s writing the text? A.To share and reflect on a journey. B.To suggest a new way of travel. C.To advocate protection of biodiversity. D.To introduce and promote Chinese culture. C Have you ever wondered what the food you eat every day can tell you about where you come from? Have you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world eat different types of food? Do you ever ask yourself why certain foods or cuisine traditions are so important to your culture? There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an personal level, we grow up eating the food of our cultures. It becomes a part of who each of us is. Many of us connect food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. On a larger scale, traditional cuisine is passed down from one generation to the next. It also serves as an expression of cultural identity (身份). Immigrants bring the food of their countries with them wherever they go and cooking traditional food is a way of preserving their culture when they move to new places. In China, harmony is a vital quality in almost every aspect of life. This is reflected in Chinese cuisine, where almost every flavor (味道) is used in a balanced way creating delicious dishes with flavors that go well together. The cuisine of the United States also reflects its history. The European colonization (殖民) of the Americas brought European ingredients (食材) and cooking styles to the U. S. As the world becomes more globalized, it is easier to get cuisines from different cultures. We should keep our traditions through our culture’s food but we should also become more informed about other cultures by trying their foods. 8.What does the author want to express in Paragraph 1? A.Traditions on culture. B.Difficulties in cooking food. C.Concerns about food and culture. D.Connections between food and culture. 9.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A.Memories. B.Traditional culture. C.Traditional cuisine. D.Generation. 10.How do people feel about Chinese food? A.It is rich in all kinds of vitamins. B.It balances the dishes of different countries. C.It is extremely significant to balance people’s daily life. D.It contains rich dishes with various flavors balanced. 11.What can be the suitable title for the text? A.What Food Tells Us About Culture. B.What Effect Food Causes on Culture. C.How Food Becomes More Globalized. D.How Traditional Cuisine is Passed Down. D We often say we enjoy driving — but do we really mean it? When you’re in a ride-share or your friend is behind the wheel (方向盘), do you wish you could take over? Probably not. If you could relax, listen to music, or watch a show instead, would you still want to hold the wheel and be responsible for everyone’s safety on the road? Moreover, most of us are not great drivers. Surveys show that many accidents happen each year as a result of driver mistakes. This makes us wonder: should we keep driving ourselves when better options, like self-driving cars, are becoming available? Our unwillingness to accept self-driving cars often reflects deeper feelings about change and independence. Research suggests that our love for driving often comes from a fear of losing control, not from real enjoyment or a sense of freedom. As technology improves, those who say they love driving may find they enjoy not having to do it — especially if that means they can relax or spend quality time with friends instead. Studies show that even with the chance to use self-driving cars for free, many still choose to drive their own vehicles instead. This suggests that trust and comfort are major issues for many drivers. As self-driving cars become safer and more reliable over time, we might prefer relaxing or enjoying other activities instead of focusing on driving. In conclusion, trying a self-driving car might change your views on driving completely. As technology advances, we might discover just how much freedom self-driving cars offer to us. So, do you really want to drive? Your next ride in a self-driving car could show how comfortable and safe travel can be when you can sit back and let the car take care of everything for you. 12.What’s the author’s purpose of raising questions at the beginning? A.To suggest that driving is enjoyable. B.To stress the importance of road safety. C.To discuss the benefits of ride-sharing. D.To show that we may not love driving. 13.Why are some people unwilling to accept self-driving cars? A.They fear losing control without driving. B.They have no chance to experience them. C.They show little interest in new technology. D.They care more about the freedom of driving. 14.What can we learn from the studies in paragraph 4? A.Drivers prefer to drive alone. B.Trust in self-driving cars is low. C.Self-driving cars are comfortable now. D.People know little about self-driving cars. 15.What does the author advise people to do about self-driving cars in the end? A.Ignore and refuse. B.Learn and control. C.Try and enjoy. D.Wait and watch. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2. 5 分,满分 12. 5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Waiting is the Hardest Part of Life Waiting can be the hardest part, whether it’s a job, a relationship, or just an opportunity to do something great. And it’s not just wanting something that makes waiting hard. Fear of the unknown can make us hesitant to take any action at all, for fear of making the wrong decision. So we wait and wait. 16 The answer is simple but not easy: start taking small steps forward. Research others in your circumstance Research others in your circumstance and read about them. You’ll understand you’re not alone, which can make waiting somewhat simpler to swallow. 17 When you see others around you taking action and achieving their goals, it becomes easier to push yourself to do the same. And don’t forget to celebrate your wins along the way! 18 We often wait for the right time to come along before we take any action. We want everything to be perfect before we make our move. Unfortunately, waiting for the “perfect” situation can often mean that we never actually take any action at all. Worse yet, we may find ourselves constantly putting things off until tomorrow or next week. 19 And next week, next month and next year may all bring their own challenges and problems that prevent us from ever taking that first step. We need to learn to re-evaluate our approach and stop waiting for the perfect moment. Be sure you are not wasting your time Do you enjoy what you’re doing? What if we’re wasting our lives by not seizing the right moment? 20 Asking ourselves if we’re wasting our lives waiting is the first step. If the answer is yes, it’s time to make a change. Don’t wait for things to happen — make them happen. Start by taking small steps every day and before you know it, you’ll be on your way. The Habit of Progress is all about making progress no matter what life throws your way. A.Wait for the right moment. B.Re-examine your approach. C.Is something keeping you down? D.How do we break out of this cycle? E.It can be scary to take a first step, but it’s worth it. F.The problem with this is that tomorrow may never come. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt lonely, struggling against the challenges of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand him, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone. One day, after class, Ms Lau asked Alex to her office with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with joy. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.” Alex’s heart raced wildly, the thought of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and frightening.
