Aasritha Duriseti, an eighth-grade student at Carson Middle School wanted to help her grandmother who struggled to open bottle caps. She found a solution in her engineering class, where students were tasked with adapting existing products to make daily life easier for people with challenges.
Aasritha’s creativity kicked in as she researched existing bottle-opening devices. “The shape and size of a cellphone are familiar,” she said. To create a better bottle opener, Aasritha used a piece of wood. It was shaped like a cellphone. Next, she put three holes in the wood. The holes were in different sizes so that they could match common bottle cap sizes. Each hole also had a layer of dried hot glue, providing a strong hold for the bottle caps. With a simple twisting motion, her grandmother could open bottles without assistance.
While addressing challenges those with learning disabilities, movement challenges and other issues face, students like Aasritha used more than their math, physics, and tool skills. They also learned about empathy (共情). “Empathy is looking at problems from another person’s point of view,” Aasritha’s teacher, Mark Bolt, said. “It’s an important part of engineering. Engineers need to put themselves in their product users’ shoes to build effective solutions.” It was empathy, while watching friends and family deal with daily tasks, that pushed other students’ projects.
Student Michael noticed how reading disorder made it difficult for his friends to follow along on pages full of text. Their brains tend to confuse the order of numbers, letters, and other images. So Michael created a small adjustable window-blind-style device. “My friend could separate small sections of text while reading,” he said.
In the process, students tried different versions of their products to make the best one to show the class. Rather than having step-by-step directions for the projects, Bolt preferred to leave students’ creative paths open. “If we want to do better, we have to have a chance to fail,” he said.
41. What might be a solution to Aasritha’s engineering class task?
A. To better wheelchairs. B. To invent new products.
C. To raise money for the disabled. D. To teach lower-grade students engineering.
42. Why are the three holes’ sizes different in Aasritha’s bottle opener?
A. To ensure a wider use. B. To make the most of space.
C. To beautify the bottle opener. D. To make the opener easier to hold.
43. According to Mark Bolt, while designing products engineers should ________.
A. ask for the users’ advice B. be thoughtful of their users
C. improve their work effectiveness D. focus more on the people around them
44. How does Michael’s device work?
A. By reading the text to its users.
B. By adding a dictionary to the text.
C. By putting words in different colors.
D. By focusing users’ attention on specific reading areas.
45. What does Mark Bolt think is important in the students’ creation?
A. Aiming to be the best creator.
B. Having room for free exploration.

C
Scientists at Tel Aviv University have conducted a six-year study, proving that plants produce a noise in certain stressful situations. The plants make a high frequency clicking sound which cannot be heard by humans, and when they are lacking water, or being damaged, the clicks become far more regular. The plants could make various sounds, depending on whether they are thirsty or injured.
For the scientists’ research, some plants were placed in a soundproof box and recorded by two microphones. Some plants were badly in need of water, others were cut, and a control group was left undamaged. The researchers used AI technology to separate the noises. Being able to identify the particular calls of the plants up to 3-5 metres away, the technology successfully discriminated between the sounds made depending on whether the plants were dry or cut.
While farming has become a science itself, there’re still a lot of estimates involved. If farmers were able to receive accurate information directly from their crops, they could adopt a much more efficient method of care and also be able to better identify and control diseases in a crop. All this can be achieved by using microphones and sensors to translate this new information.
On average, the human ear can hear sounds up to around 20 kHz, whereas the sounds produced by plants are in the 40-80 kHz region, far beyond our hearing capabilities. However, the sounds produced by plants can probably be heard by various animals. Though this has yet to be proven, these creatures may use this information for their benefit, choosing which plants to eat, for example.
Furthermore, a study in 2014, led by Reda Hassanien of China Agricultural University in Beijing, proved that plants reacted to sound waves, with some plants significantly increasing their yield. While it’s still unknown if one plant could react to another’s noises, it seems likely. Indeed, the same research facility is now ready to test this assumption.
46. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “discriminated” in Paragraph 2?
A. Balanced. B. Compared.
C. Distinguished. D. Captured.
47. What benefit may farmers get from this research?
A. Managing their crops purposefully and effectively.
B. Protecting their crops against diseases directly.
C. Adding to the variety of crops to some extent.
D. Saving their time on farming significantly.
48. What is now sure about the sounds produced by plants according to the researchers?
A. They improve the crop production.
B. They go beyond humans’ hearing range.
C. They assist animals in searching for food.
D. They help plants communicate with each other.
49. What may future research focus on?
A. Whether plants can react to each other’s sounds.
B. Whether creatures can react to sound waves.
C. How to judge the types of plants by sound.
D. How plants communicate with another’s noises.
50. The writer wrote the passage to tell us .
A. plants may help increase yield in farming by sound
B. plants can communicate like humans by various sounds
C. plants repeat the identical sound in the face of danger
D. plants can produce diverse sounds in difficult situations

In a society of endless notifications from apps, devices and social media platforms, as well as access to more information than we could possibly consider, how do we find ways to manage? And is the way, we think, focusing on and processing information changing as a result?
Maryanne Wolf is a director of the Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners and Social Justice at the University of California in the United States. Wolf is concerned that the amount of interaction we have with our screens and devices and the speed at which we necessarily have to function have changed us by removing from us the ability to be present. And we’re so accustomed to going so fast that becoming completely involved in an activity is difficult.
Kai Lukoff is an assistant professor at Santa Clara University in the U.S. He researches how the apps, social media platforms and technology designers attempt to catch a user’s attention. He said, “There are a thousand or more engineers, developers, and designers on the other side of the screen who are purposefully or intentionally designing these services in order to attract your attention, to get you to spend more time on the site and to get you to click on more ads.”
Daniel Le Roux is a senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. He looks at the effects of what we’re doing when we’re “media multitasking”. “Everybody’s doing it, and it’s, in a large way, a natural adaptation to the technological environment that has been created around us,” he said.
“Media multitasking, like quick reading, is an adaptive response to an environment filled with information. And media multitasking comes at a cognitive (认知的) cost.” Le Roux points out. “We bring what we might call the switch cost; that means our performance in the key task is going to suffer. If you think of driving as the key task, the reason we prohibit drivers from using their smartphones while driving is that it distracts them from the task of driving.”
51. What’s the result of our interaction with screens according to Wolf?
A. Having trouble in concentrating.
B. Ignoring family and friends easily.
C. Responding to information quickly.
D. Having technology to assist with study.
52. What does Kai Lukoff intend to stress with his words?
A. The importance of colorful ads.
B. The strong attraction of social media.
C. The operation of social media platforms.
D. The great service of network developers.
53. Why does media multitasking occur?
A. To train us to handle tasks effectively.
B. To reduce the bad effect of social media.
C. To offer more ways to use technology.
D. To adjust us to the information age.
54. What is the switch cost mentioned by Daniel Le Roux?
A. We tend to forget our original intention.
B. We get distracted from our main mission.
C. We lose some important information.
D. We have to follow the fashion in technology.
55. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Challenges in the Digital Age
B. Dangers of Media Multitasking
C. Impacts of Technology on Attention
D. Methods of Dealing with Electronic Distractions
【答案】51. A 52. B 53. D 54. B 55. A

第四部分:写作(本题共两节,满分35分)
阅读表达
When Alex was 15, a climbing accident resulted in the loss of his right leg. For a lively and athletic teenager, this was a devastating blow. In the months that followed, he fell into deep depression, convinced that his dreams and joys had ended.
One day, his physical therapist placed a pair of swimming goggles (护目镜) in his hand. “The water doesn’t care how many legs you have,” she said. Reluctantly, Alex started spending time in the pool. At first, it was frustrating. His body was unbalanced, and moving through the water was a struggle. But he persisted. The water, as his therapist promised, provided a sense of freedom he hadn’t felt since his accident. He could move without the aid of his crutches.
Months of practice turned into years. Alex didn’t just learn to swim; he learned to swim with incredible speed and grace. He focused on the power of his upper body and the technique of his kick with his left leg. He turned his perceived weakness into a unique strength. His coach, recognizing his talent and determination, encouraged him to compete.
At the age of 20, Alex qualified for the national Paralympic swimming team. Standing on the starting block, he looked at the pool not as a place of past struggle, but as a field of victory. He won a silver medal that day. When asked by a reporter what his achievement meant, he said, “The accident took my leg, but it couldn’t take my spirit. This medal isn’t about proving something to the world; it’s about reminding myself that I can overcome any obstacle with a strong will.”
56. Why did Alex think his dreams and joys had ended? (No more than 10 words)

【答案】56. Because he lost his right leg in an accident.
57. By placing swimming goggles in his hand and telling him water didn’t care how many legs he had.
58. Believed./ Considered.
59. He qualified for the national Paralympic swimming team and won a silver medal.

Popular Books among Students
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Popular Books among Students
A recent survey on students’ reading preferences reveals striking trends in what senior high school students choose to read. Science books take the lion’s share, accounting for 43% of the total. Comics follow closely at 26%, while books about sports and music make up 18%. Surprisingly, classic literature only represents 13% of students’ reading choices.
This distribution reflects both positive and worrying aspects. On one hand, the popularity of science books shows students’ eagerness to explore the world of knowledge and keep up with technological developments. Comics, as a light and entertaining form of reading, offer a much-needed escape from heavy academic pressure. On the other hand, the low percentage of classic literature read is a cause for concern, as classics are a treasure trove of wisdom and cultural heritage that can shape students’ minds and values.
To address this imbalance, I have two suggestions. First, schools could organize classic literature reading clubs or hold themed lectures to spark students’ interest in timeless works. Second, teachers can assign short, engaging excerpts from classics as supplementary reading, guiding students to appreciate their beauty and depth. By doing so, we can help students build a more balanced and enriching reading habit that combines practical knowledge with spiritual nourishment.

C. Following a strict set of rules and steps.
D. Serving different functions in different situations.

D How plants communicate with another’s noises.

A To train us to handle tasks effectively.
B. To reduce the bad effect of social media.
C. To offer more ways to use technology.
D. To adjust us to the information age.
54. What is the switch cost mentioned by Daniel Le Roux?
A. We tend to forget our original intention.
B. We get distracted from our main mission.
C. We lose some important information.
D. We have to follow the fashion in technology.
55. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Challenges in the Digital Age
B. Dangers of Media Multitasking
C. Impacts of Technology on Attention
D. Methods of Dealing with Electronic Distractions
